BOURNE, Augustus (Gus)
Passed away March 16, 2011 in Victoria, British Columbia. His beloved wife Barbara died in 1995. He leaves daughters Beverley Ball (Austin) and Nancy Bourne, grandsons Deryck Ball and Evan Ball, sister-in-law, Ruby Bourne and many nieces, nephews and long-time friends. Gus was the last of the five boys born to Augustus and Caroline (nee Butt) Bourne to pass away. Brothers Hayward, Bill, Fred and very recently, Jim, predeceased him.

Born September 24, 1927 in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Gus left the "Rock" to pursue his career as teacher and ultimately, principal. In Ontario, he met and married Barbara Jean Douglas where they resided until her death. Gus then moved to British Columbia to be closer to his daughters. He will be laid to rest in Fort Erie, Ontario with his wife. A service will be held there in May. Donations may be made in his name to World Vision or the charity of your choice.
Solace over his passing is found in the belief that he is now reunited with his wife and that they have both found peace.

BOYLE, Patricia
Patricia Boyle
died on Saturday, 2 April 2011 in Victoria, BC. She was born in Guelph in 1941 and lived in London, Ontario, London, England, Saskatoon and Calgary before coming to the west coast. It was during a brief and lucky stop in Newfoundland that she met her beloved husband of 30 years, Neil.

She will be sorely missed by her husband; her sons, Colin and Iain; her daughters-in-law, Kip, Karen and Nicole; her grandchildren, Naelle and Owen and by many, many relatives, friends and people whose lives she touched. Pat was a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother. Her life blossomed when she had her two sons. She raised them with unconditional love, doting affection and sound advice. She had the gift of giving children her absolute attention and always celebrated the special moments of her family's life. For Pat, family included many of her son's friends, to whom she was like a second mother. She took the same delight in being a grandmother. It gave her the utmost joy to play with her grandchildren, teach them the names of plants, and read the stories that she had read to her own sons years before. She was blessed with a husband who loved her absolutely and whom she loved absolutely in return. Their travels together to six continents, gardening and many games of scrabble were part of a deep love that began from the moment they met.

Pat was a true renaissance woman. She lectured at the University of Western Ontario in geography, worked as a writer and editor in the oil patch, was a Calgary School Board Trustee and later, Advisor to the Calgary School Board on Gender Issues. She was a strong feminist role model for all the women in her life and the men, too, including her two sons. She was particularly proud of her role in ending corporal punishment in the Calgary School Board, her work with male primary school teachers, and the work she did for gay and lesbian students. In Victoria, she dedicated herself to becoming a native plant gardener with special interests in Garry Oak ecosystems. She was proud to help naturalize the woodlands at Government House, which she coordinated with many other volunteers. She received the Acorn Award in 2009 from the Garry Oak Ecosystem Recovery Team. She loved many things, including her friends, books, cryptic crosswords, Canadian art, Scrabble, birding, travel, hiking in the Rockies (particularly Lake O'Hara), politics, and people. She had an amazing ability to bring out the beauty around her, in her relationships with people, gardens, and homes that she lived in.

There will be a Celebration of Her Life at MCCALL'S FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2 pm. Anyone who wishes to say a few words about Pat will have an opportunity to speak, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to Pat's passions are encouraged to consider donations to Garry Oak Ecosystem Recovery Team, Garry Oak Meadow Preservation Society, and the Government House Woodlands gardens. She would also be delighted if you could plant a native plant, pull an invasive weed, or put up a birdhouse on your property. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com

Patricia Boyle was not born in Newfoundland, but the obituary says she met her husband there. Although it doesn't say explicitly that her husband, Neil Boyle, was born in Newfoundland, I think it implies that he was. - Carol Jenkins

"Fair is the white star of twilight, and the sky cleaner at the day's end; But she is fairer, and she is dearer, She, my heart friend! Fair is the white star of twilight, and the moon roving to the sky's end; But she is fairer, better worth loviing, She, my heart's friend"

QUIGLEY, Janice Cecilia
March 22, 1954 July 13, 2011

Janice, a wonderfully generous and funloving soul who brought so much joy to all who knew her, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. Originally from Bell Island, Newfoundland, Janice was born with a passion for travelling and for people. After working in Montreal and England, she became successful owner of Hamburger Heaven in St. John's for many years. Her travelling bug then led her to camp across Canada and to settle a while in Victoria, BC, where she acquired her Applied Linguistics degree. This opened up a whole new career for her as an ESL teacher. The last six and half years of her life in Ishinomaki, Japan, were among the best years of her life, and she dearly loved the many friends she made there. The sudden onset of cancer in late December, 2010, led her to return to Victoria for treatment, and to wage a valiant battle which inspired family, friends and medical team alike. Predeceased by father Peter Quigley (1988) and brother Myles Quigley (2001). Leaving to mourn her dear mother and best friend Glenna Quigley; brothers: Edward in Ajax, ON; Christopher, Neil and Craig (Leeann) in St. John's, NL; sisters: Marilyn Opalinski (Paul) in Paris, ON; Colleen Cormier (Paul) in Beaverbank, NS; Lorna Quigley (Corrado Fermo) in Toronto, ON; her longtime close friend Judith Kelsey in Victoria, BC; a large number of nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends whose lives she touched over the years. Sincere gratitude is extended to the Victoria Hospice team who truly made quality of life for Janice a priority right to the end. Thanks also to St. John the Divine Church and our many friends for months of prayer and support. A celebration of Janice's life will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 2 p.m. at St. John the Divine on Quadra Street. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Janice's name may be made to Victoria Hospice and/or to the Red Cross Relief Fund for Japan.
