CANTWELL-PETERS (nee Withers), Angela - "Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy"
- Inuit mythology
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the loss of Angela Cantwell- Peters, who passed away peacefully in Windsor, ON on September 9, 2016 at 86 years of age. Beloved mother of Michele (Cantwell) Stewart (Tim). Cherished Nana of Laura and Matthew Andrews and Emma Stewart. Predeceased (2009) by her devoted husband of 27 years, Stuart Peters, and Thomas Cantwell (1977), loving husband of 24 years. Daughter of the late Peter and Madeline Withers. Dear sister of Paul (late Margaret Clouter) Withers, Peter (Patricia) Withers, Carmel (Cyril) Fleming, late Ray Withers, Vincent (Delores) Withers, late Kay Kiss, Madeline (Doug) Greeley, late James (late Cathy) Withers. Will be sadly missed by a large number of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Angela was a dynamic, intelligent and successful professional woman who was a pioneer in breaking through the corporate "glass ceiling" in Canada. From humble beginnings in the secretarial pool at Bowring Brothers in St. John's, NL, Angela rose to the top of the corporate ladder. When recalling special moments from her career, however, Angela rarely cited her title as Bowring's President and CEO, nor her many Board positions, or her seat on the Prime Minister's special commission. Rather, she treasured the memory of thoughtful co-workers who brought her a loaf of bread, and those who continued to phone her once a year or send a Christmas card. These were the special people that made her career most rewarding and fulfilling.
As the oldest of nine siblings, Angela took on the role of second mother early in her life, providing love and caring for each of her brothers and sisters in a devoted and loyal way. She was an anchor in the Wither's family, and her loss will be felt deeply.
Angela adored each of her grandchildren, and in her later years was so happy to be near them in Windsor. She treasured opportunities to watch them in a school play or dance recital, and together they enjoyed many special family trips. In Angela's eyes, though, no star shone more brightly than her precious Emma, whom she loved "to the moon and back".
But the most important person in Angela's life was always her daughter, Michele. Her "Mickey Mouse" was Angela's pride and joy, and she cherished their time together - particularly special moments after a long day at work or when she returned from a business trip. Angela's love for her only child knew no bounds, and she left an indelible mark on Michele's life in innumerable ways -- as a mother, a role model and later as a friend and confidante. The memories they created and the bond of love they shared will live on forever.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 18th at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X on Monday, September 19th at 9:30am, with private family interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Angela's memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or to the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. To send a message of condolence or to sign the memorial guest book, please visit www.carnells.com

PIKE, John Powell - (August 5th, 1924 - September 6th, 2016) - P. Eng., WW II Veteran RCAF. Passed away on September 6th, 2016, after a wonderful and fulfilling 92 years. Born in Carbonear on August 5th, 1924, John's early life was nurtured by his parents, his successful career was shaped by many business relationships, his social life was enriched by an unparalleled network of friends and his lasting legacy will be his love for and devotion to his family. John's childhood in Carbonear contributed greatly to the man he became. He was raised in a loving family in a thriving business community during the late 1920s and early 1930s and both shaped his values, his goals and his character. As a young man, John served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Following his service overseas, he returned to Mount Allison University, compressing three years of studies into two, and was then accepted to study Engineering at Nova Scotia Tech, where he graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1952. He returned to Newfoundland, beginning his engineering career at the American base at Fort Pepperell, followed by several decades with Canadian Johns-Manville, supporting the building of the Trans-Canada Highway across Newfoundland, and learning much about the communities and the great character of the people who were developing our province in the post-Confederation era.
Through mutual friends, he met and married Flo Blackmore, who brought the wonderful Blackmore family, her own strong values and much love to their relationship. Throughout the 64 years of their loving partnership, John and Flo were the consummate couple and their home was the source of much laughter and good times their entire married life. Theirs was a large circle of close friends and family and they participated in many social and community activities. Bridge, curling and tennis were among John's passions and bridge was a weekly highlight until his final year. At their home in St. John's, their country home in Long Pond and their winter home on St. Petersburg Beach, they always welcomed and hosted friends and family and to his final days, he enjoyed every occasion to gather with them. Throughout John's career, his entrepreneurial spirit guided him, seeded many businesses and provided employment in many communities. His business ventures included manufacturing, construction, restaurants, motels, and the travel industry and during many periods, a business of John's would be the largest employer in different regions of the province. He went on to establish manufacturing companies in Atlantic Canada and he served on numerous boards, including the Board of Regents of Mount Allison and Memorial Universities as well as three decades of volunteer board service with Island Furniture and its support for the Vera Perlin Society until his passing. John embodied the example of a self-made man with a giving spirit. John's intelligence, sense of fairness, wit and affable personality and his love for and ability to tell stories endeared him to everyone. John's stories were legendary and he regaled friends, colleagues and family with his unique way of bringing local colour into the fabric of any story. The dining room table was his favourite arena for sharing stories, generating laughter and nurturing relationships, and his life was characterized by strong values, great humility and a demonstrated love for his family. John's philosophy for life was to take the high road and to see the good in people and he made friends easily. His interest in the people and communities of our province endeared him to legions of people who respected him and had great affection for him. He has been an outstanding example to his family.
John spent the last days of his life lovingly holding hands with Flo. He also leaves with loving and lasting memories and great gratitude his daughters Janine (Brian Vallis), Valerie and Patti (David Chiasson), his grandchildren Kate (Chris Clarke), Jennifer and John, great-grandchildren Elliott and Olivia Clarke, his sister Flora, brother Frank, sisters-in-law Phyllis Blackmore, Joan Blackmore Thistle, June Blackmore, cherished nieces and nephews and a wide circle of family and friends. John's family extends heartfelt thanks to Margaret Thornhill, Lucy Branton, Colleen Organ, and Dr. Andrew Hutton for their great compassion and care as well as to the entire staff of the Caribou Veterans Memorial Pavilion. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, September 9th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service of remembrance will be held at St. James United Church on Saturday, September 10th at 2 p.m. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery Field of Honour. RYAN, Lois
Passed on: September 9th, 2016

Most devoted, most trusted, and most loving mother, Lois RYAN, surrendered peacefully on Sept 9, 2016 after a brief, but hard fought battle with cancer. Lois grew up in St. John's, often affectionately recalling her youth living on Pine Bud Ave, playing along Rennie's River and proudly attending Bishop Spencer College. Lois trained as a nurse at the General Hospital School of Nursing in St. John's. In her later years, she devoted countless hours to Cochrane Street United Church supporting restoration efforts and outreach programs. She loved playing bridge and taught many of her friends to play. Even in her last days she selflessly worried about her children and all of the unfinished things she was leaving behind. Mom, it's time for you to rest now and stop worrying. We've got this. Your strength and love lives on in us; your children. We'll take care of each other. You have gone to a better, more peaceful place to join your loved ones who have gone before you. Lois is survived by her son Jonathan, daughter Gail (husband, Michel Okoh), Olivia and Zachary (grandchildren), Elizabeth Driscoll (sister in law), Janet Hoddinot (cousin), nieces and nephews. We all bid you a loving farewell; always to be remembered. Lois was predeceased by Rita Mae Driscoll (mother), Cyril Driscoll (father), Judy Nufer (sister) and Charles Driscoll (brother). Most heartfelt appreciation and thanks go out to my truest and best friend Karen and my Aunt Elizabeth who were both always there for Mom when I couldn't be. My brother and I would also like to give recognition to the special people who work on 6East at Clare's Mercy Hospital and on 3North at the Miller Center. Visitation will be at Barrett's Funeral Home on Hamilton Ave. on Monday, Sept 12, 2016 from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm. Funeral service will be at Gower Street United Church on Tuesday, Sept 13, 2016 at 10:30am followed by burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on James Lane. Donations in our mother's memory can be made to her beloved Cochrane Street United Church, 81 Cochrane Street, St. John's, NL, A1C 3L7.
