EDGECOMBE, Helene Katherine - It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Helene Katherine (Scott) Edgecombe B.Sc., RN, in the presence of her daughters on September 14, 2007 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s, Newfoundland. Helene Katherine Scott was born in Enfield, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Frederick Scott and Mary Josephine (MacLean) Scott and sister to Jean, Patricia, and Frances (deceased). She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked at Camp Hill Veteran’s Hospital, the Halifax Infirmary and later with Public Health in Halifax and Toronto. She was a caring individual and showed a superior standard of care for her patients during her nursing career. She was an instructor at the Grace General Hospital and St. Clare’s Hospital schools of nursing, and was well liked by her students for her patience, understanding and sense of humour. Our mother lived her life by simple values - she was thoughtful and kind to others, and a devout Catholic with a deep respect for life. She was a long term Canadian Cancer Society volunteer driver for patients receiving oncology treatments, as well as, the Senior’s Resource Centre. She also canvassed for many charitable organizations over the years. Her generosity was boundless and she extended this compassion to many homeless animals over the years, fostering and placing them in adoptive homes. Our mother struggled valiantly with an Alzheimer’s related illness over the past 10 years but she quietly accepted this, determined to spare her family. Her life will not be defined by this illness but by her infinite kindness and compassion to others, her incredible courage in the face of adversity, the strength of her character, and the beauty of her spirit. We are sure she is now reunited with her mother, father, and sister Frances in a beautiful place. She leaves behind her five children: Wendy, Daria, Bill, Colin, and John as well as her sisters: Jean Hughes (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) and Patricia Meagher (Waverly, Nova Scotia), several nieces and nephews as well as life-long friends Cassie (Gill) Sautter (California) and Verna (Douthright) Curtin (Nova Scotia), and her most favourite cat “Orangie”. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Dr. Rockwood, Dr. Forsythe, Dr. Hiscock, Dr. Ennis, and Dr. Raffadan as well as the nurses on 6th West and 4th West at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for their kind and expert care of our Mother over the past year, and the staff at Chancellor Park who brought joy to our Mother’s life with their singing and special care. A very special thank you is also extended to Dr. Barbara Grandy for her long term support, compassion and dignified care of our Mother as well as our family. We are forever grateful to you. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 9:30 am at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent, with interment at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Enfield, Nova Scotia at a later date. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Ruff-Spots Animal Welfare Foundation, Terry Fox Foundation, or a charty of one’s choice. To George, life itself was a continuing learning experience. In his younger days George was an accomplished athlete in paddling, swimming, basketball and track & field. A love of gardening and cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays replaced athletic prowess in his senior years. Having lived on both coasts of Canada he chose to return to his beloved Sudbury where his roots lay and felt he belonged. He shared a loving relationship with Doreen on the shores of Lake Ramsey. With his giving and generous spirit he influenced all who knew him. In spite of continuing medical adversity he had a great strength of character and stoicism. This allowed him to live each day to its fullest and remark “Life is good.” A celebration of George’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 111 Larch Street, Sudbury, Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 11 a.m. Cremation. I am standing on the seashore.
A ship sails in the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her ’til at last she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, she is gone.
Gone where?
Gone from my sight, that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her; and just at that moment when someone at my side says, she is gone, there are others watching her coming in and other voices take up a glad shout: there she comes.
And that is dying.
“May she rest in peace”

In 1977 she became a founding member of the St. John’s Guild of Embroiderers, who made her an Honorary Life Member as a result of her many contributions. It will not surprise any of her friends that, as pragmatic as ever and with a good sense of humour, Ingrid made all her own arrangements while she was still hale and hearty, and before dementia gradually robbed her of her wonderful personality in the late 1990’s. Her last thirteen years were spent at Glenbrook Lodge in great comfort and peace, and the extraordinary attention and care she received from everyone at Glenbrook will always be remembered by her family with warm gratitude. Gertrude was born on July 6, 1916 in St. George’s, NL. For 23 years, Gertrude played an important role in the Simms family’s life. Her love and support was very evident and she was very proud of all her grandchildren’s successes. Children brought her much joy and she was always happy to hear stories about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gertrude was known as ‘Nan’ to all her grandchildren, and over the years she became affectionately known as ‘Nan’ to all family friends. Nan loved sharing a good laugh with family and friends and visitors always brightened up her day.
