ABBOTT, Norman L. - Passed peacefully away at James Paton Memorial Hospital on Saturday, September 6, 2003, Mr. Norman L. Abbott of Musgrave Harbour in his 73rd year. Predeceased by his wife Audrey, parents Fred and May Abbott and brother-in-law Lloyd Keats. Left with fond and loving memories are four sons: John (Pauline) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Ralph (Noreen) of Bonavista, Dennis (Sarah-Jane) of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, and Paul (Janet) of Clarenville; two daughters: Donna Carpenter (Jack) of Catalina and Sandra McMullen (Rene) of Ottawa, Ontario; one sister, Marguerite Abbott-Norman of Musgrave Harbour; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law Aggie Keats of Bonavista; five nieces and also a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service to take place on Tuesday, September 9 at 2 p.m. from St. Luke`s United Church in Musgrave Harbour. Interment at St. Luke`s United Church Cemetery in Musgrave Harbour. ALLEN, Malcolm (Max) Hector - Passed peacefully away on September 29, 2003 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Max, in his 67th year, was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Predeceased by his parents Malcolm and Evelyn and brother Cambridge. Left with fond memories are his loving wife Laura; one son Terry; daughter-in-law Kim; granddaughter Kali Sue; grandson Riley; brothers: Freeman, Harvey and wife Marie; twin brother Bill and wife Eileen; and a large circle of relatives and friends. A very special thank you to Dr. Pheonia O`Shea and nurses Carmel and Chris, Dr. Essaji and the community health nurses that cared for him. Cremation has already taken place. The family will be receiving visitations by family and friends at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Tuesday, September 30 from 2-4 and 6-10 p.m. and on Wednesday, October 1 from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. AVERY, Wilfred - Passed peacefully away on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003 at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, Wilfred Avery of Southport, aged 83 years. Predeceased by his sister, Dorothy, and brother, Chesley. Left with fond and loving memories his brother William (Myria) of Shoal Harbour, nieces Elaine Stringer (Garfield) of Shoal Harbour, Evelyn Avery of Southport, nephew Winston Avery of Port Blandford, nieces Susette Peddle (Trace) of Clarenville, Shelly Littlejohn (Norman) of Bay Roberts, nephews Larry Tippet (Corrine) and Sterling Tippet (Sylvia) of Alberta, great-nieces and nephews and a large number of relatives and friends. AYLWARD, Maude - Passed peacefully away at the Leonard A. Miller Centre on Tuesday, September 30, 2003, Maude Aylward, in her 86th year. Predeceased by her husband, Gordon in 2000. Leaving to mourn with treasured memories her ten children: sons: Brian (Gail) of St. John`s, Gordon (Sonny) (Joan Marie) of St. John`s, Ron (Dorothy) of Marystown; daughters: Patricia Kieley of St. John`s, Barbara Aylward of St. John`s, Joan Upshall (Willis) of Whitbourne, Margaret Healey (Stephen) of Goose Bay, Madelyn Kelly (Bill) of Goose Bay, Judy Gorich (John) of North Carolina, and Gwen Maguire of Torbay. Lovingly remembered by her twenty-six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren as well as many other friends and relatives, especially Fintan and Ann Aylward, Margaret Aylward, Madelyn Cotter and Frances Aylward. BARTLETT, Shirley Eleanor (nee Thompson) - Passed away peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, Ottawa on Friday, September 19th, 2003. She is survived by her husband Samuel; son Stuart of Ottawa; daughter Jane Clifton (Wayne) of Victoria, BC and their daughters: Sarah and Jaime; brother Ralph of South Brookfield, NS; sister-in-law Helen Udell of Carbonear, NL and many nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Shirley was born in Liverpool, NS and lived most of her life in Newfoundland and then Ottawa where she was active in the Arts Community. A funeral service was held at the West Chapel of Hulse Playfair & McGarry, Ottawa on Wednesday, September 24, 2003. Interment will take place in the Bartlett Cemetery, Brigus, Newfoundland. BAVINGTON, Bethene Elizabeth - Bethene passed away at the home of her son September 3, 2003, in her 92nd year, in St. John`s, NL. Beloved wife of James Louis Bavington (deceased) for almost 67 years. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Mary Mitchell and her husband Don, North Bay, ON and by her son Bill Bavington and his wife Grace Ann (Willis). She is the dear grandmother of Wendy Williams (Peter), Wanda Reyes (Jorge), Mark Mitchell (Lisa), Dean Bavington and Beth Ann Bartlett (Jason) and great-grandmother to Jennifer, Danica, Gary, Jordan, Bianca, Tanya, Zachary and Emma. The family expresses sincere thanks to Dr. Pauline Duke and Family Medicine residents of the Family Practice Clinic and to care giver Joanne Parsons for their long term dedication and caring. Thanks are extended also to Johanna Rocco, Pat Walsh, Lillian Cheeseman, Carmel Jamieson and to the staff of the Miller Centre Day Program and of the Agnes Pratt Home (Protective Care Unit). The family extends appreciation to those friends who provided support to Jim and Bethene over the past five years. CHUBBS, George Thomas - Age 83 years. Passed peacefully away on September 3, 2003 at Townside, Placentia, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his son George in 1971 and his daughter June in 2002. Leaving to mourn with fond memories, his wife of over 60 years, Mary Josephine; four sons: Gary, Leon, Carl and Robert and four daughters: Dorothy, Maxine, Lorraine and Cindy; along with eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Born and resided in Carbonear until the opening of Argentia Naval Base where he spent a lengthy career as Fire Captain for over 30 years. He was very active in the community, but most of all was known for his love of church work at St. Luke`s Anglican Church. He will be sadly missed by his church community. HAYNES, Albert J - of Doylestown, Pa. died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003 at his home. He was 81. Born May 1, 1922 in Catalina, Newfoundland to Capt. Albert Charles and Elizabeth Baldwin Haynes. Grandson of Capt. William Haynes and great-grandson of Capt. Charles Haynes. He was the youngest of five children: William, Anita "Dikk White", Jesse Pelley, Clara Blackmore and Susan Templeman. He graduated from St. Peter`s High School in 1940. He first cheated death in 1939 at age 17 when his father`s smashed schooner, the "Frank H. Adams" was wrecked in a storm off the Groix Islands. Upon graduation he served six years in his Majesty`s Royal Navy during World War II. He was recruited and played for a British Soccer team in 1951. In 1946 he received his second officers certificate from Memorial College in St. John`s, Newfoundland. In 1949 he received his Chief Officer Certificate from Navigation College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. From 1946 to 1950 he visited world ports as a deck officer in the Canadian Merchant Marines. He served as 3rd, 2nd and 1st officer on many ships including the "SS Northbrook", "Queen of Bermuda", "Ocean Monarch" and "SS Cornerbrook". In 1950 while serving on the "Fort Townsend" and stopping in Bermuda, he got to know one of his passengers, Isabelle Wacker, a nurse from Philadelphia, Pa. They were married in 1952. In 1953 he received his Masters Certificate in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Albert resigned from his life at sea in 1954 at age 32. He was employed for the next 13 years by Bowaters as Superintendent of Pier 42 on the East River in New York and as a service representative to newspapers across the U.S. and Jamaica. He then worked for 16 years for the Phila. Inquirer as Superintendent of Paper handling until his retirement in 1985. He attended Jarretown United Methodist Church before moving to Doyles town. He was a member of the Indian Guides with his son Albert. He was known for his ready smile. He and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002. He is survived by his sisters: Clara Blackmore of Newfoundland, and Jesse Pelley of Nova Scotia; his four children: Joy Bailey of Downington, Pa., Cheryl Raman of Wilton, CT., Dale Osinski of Phila., and Albert Haynes, Mayor of Trumbauersville, Pa., and nine grandchildren. She leaves to mourn her husband Sidney; four sons and daughters-in-law: Robert (Anne Healey), Peter (Sally Ackerman), Richard (Susan Pye) and Philip (Susan Dunphy); grandchildren: Stephen, Timothy, Christopher, Shane, Anna, Thomas, Michael; sister Dorothy Halleran; in-laws: Margaret Halleran, Rosemary (Morris) and Blair Trimble; also other family members and a large circle of close friends. Gel was a loving wife and mother. She was a registered nurse (General Hospital grad) and was highly respected by her many co-workers and friends. She cherished her friendships from childhood to the end. She will be missed by all. Born on February 27, 1914 in Little Harbour (Harbour Mille), Fortune Bay, he was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Susanah, brothers: Samuel, Clayton, Hubert, Berthram, Ambrose and Herbert; sisters: Lavina (Pitcher), Lilly (Banfield) and Mariah (Evans); son-in-law Reg Moores; mother and father-in-law Arthur and Lucy Rideout; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Charlie Rideout and Ford and Anne French. He is survived by Ella Marion (Rideout) his loving wife of 61 years; daughters: Ruby Moores, Mount Pearl, Margaret (Darrell) Vallis, New Hamburg, ON, Betty (Bob) Collins, Mount Pearl; sons: Bill (Gloria), St. John`s, Fred (Eileen), Parksville, British Columbia, Norman (Edwina), Lisle, Ontario; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother George (Elizabeth), Little Harbour (Harbour Mille), Fortune Bay; sister Edith Drake, Halifax; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ron and Caroline Mansfield, Scarborough, ON; sisters-in-law Suzie Scott, St. John`s, Velma Scott, Sydney, NS and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Captain Ben lived a very full life. From the lumber woods in Labrador in the 1930`s to Master of deep sea fishing vessels from 1950-1974. After semi-retiring in 1974 he spent the next 10 years participating in ocean research with the Department of Fisheries. From 1984 to the present Ben`s time was spent on various woodworking projects, most especially his handcrafted model ships. He was very involved with his garden, producing wonderful vegetables and flowers. Ben was an avid angler who really enjoyed sport fishing. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who lived a great and full life. He will be missed. Husband and best friend to Mary Margaret (Margie McCormack); father of Jacqueline, NS, Cathy Ann (Larry Folmes), Manitoba, John, NL, Trevor, ON; brother to Betty Power, Mary McCormack, Maureen Mallard, Geraldine O`Rourke, Patricia Holden, all of NL, Gerry MacNeil, ON, Gordon, ON, Charles, NL, Ronald, ON, Thomas, NL, Alfred, ON; grandfather and poppy to nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. WILLIAMS, Paul Walter Stanley - It is with great sorrow that the family of Paul Williams announces his passing on Saturday, September 13, 2003 at the Labrador Health Centre, Happy Valley Goose Bay, Labrador in his 55th year. Predeceased by his father, John W.A. Williams and brother-in-law, Bill Poirier. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Kay (Poirier) and his son Martin John (Tammy Hughes). Left with fond and loving memories are: mother, Vera Williams, Hamilton, Ontario; brothers: John (Margaret), Mount Pearl, NL, Mike (Gwen), St. John`s, NL; sisters: Camilla, Guelph, Ontario, Yvonne, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Mary, Oakville, Ontario; mother-in-law, Muriel Poirier, Gander; sisters-in-law: Florence, Ann and Mary; brothers-in-law: Larry, Alex, Pat and Claude and also Poppy Paul`s special little friend, Shikara. Paul joined Universal Helicopter`s Ltd. 37 years ago as an apprentice mechanic at the age of eighteen and advanced through the ranks to become President and CEO of the company, a position he held until his recent retirement. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Fillatre`s Funeral Home, 45 Aspen Drive, Happy Valley Goose Bay, Labrador.
