We would like to express sincere gratitude to the caring staff at Tiffany Village, with special thanks to the team on the 8th floor. Doris graduated from St. Michael's School in 1958 and worked at the Bank of Montreal until 1982. Looking for a new experience following her mother's death in 1983, she decided to try some courses at Memorial University of Newfoundland. After a few terms she found that she was enjoying the academic life and decided to tackle it full time. Doris graduated in 1990 with an Honours B.Sc degree and was awarded the University Medal for Academic Excellence in Psychology in recognition of her outstanding academic record. With the encouragement of her Honours' mentor, Dr. Carolyn Harley, Doris decided to continue postgraduate studies in Behavioral Neuroscience. She had completed two years of academic course work and research required towards a Master's degree when Carolyn convinced her that she was ready to jump forward and carry out a full doctoral program. Doris won a Natural Sciences and Engineering Fellowship Award for her doctoral studies and pursued the problem of sex-related differences in early brain development in a critically important memory structure. She completed the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Behavioral Neuroscience in 1999 and convocated in 2000. Doris had the mind and heart of natural scientist. Although coming late to this avocation, she published four first-author papers. Her doctoral work was the first ever to report on the development of testosterone sex hormone receptors postnatally in both female and male brains. Doris eventually retired from science to enjoy family time, golf and travel with the love of her life, Reg. CLARKE Linda (nee Marsh)
June 7, 1954 - October 9, 2019

Passed away suddenly at the Health Sciences Centre October 9, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her parents, Ron and Violet Marsh, and her husband Maxwell Clarke. Being an amazing and dedicated chef, she was a woman who took care of and fed so many. Even when serving hundreds on a ship, she gave individual attention to someone's birthday, whipping up and serving an exquisite version of their favourite dessert. Linda had a way of making people feel special when in her presence. And her chocolate chip cookies - none was ever so good! Every meal was prepared with detail and love and Linda had a way of making everyone at her table feel welcome, and like family. Well loved by friends, co-workers and her own family, she had a great sense of humor, loved to play in a skit, tell a story and dress up for a laugh! A spontaneous free bird, she was always wanting to have an adventure! From parasailing to renting the red mustang for no reason while on a trip, she wanted to live life to the fullest with no regrets. A disorganized decorator at heart, she would decorate for Christmas on Christmas Eve - but it was spectacular! Linda was a strong willed woman who had to do it all herself, including fixing all the things at the family's Bed and Breakfast when no one knew how to fix the toilet. But it always got fixed, as she was determined. Please join us for a celebration of her life! Visitation at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, from 9-1, Sunday, October 13, Reflection of memories at 1:30 p.m. (Carnell's also), Interment to follow in Trinity at a later date. To send a message of condolence please visit www.carnells.com

HART Anne
Born Margaret Eleanor Anne Hill in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 7th, 1935, passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side on October 9th, 2019 in Victoria, British Columbia after 84 years of a life lived with panache, passion, delight, and a strong sense of social justice. Anne led two accomplished careers. As a librarian she nurtured the Newfoundlandia collection at Memorial University Libraries, building the Centre for Newfoundland Studies into the largest collection of published materials on all aspects of Newfoundland and Labrador anywhere, and an Archives unit in 1982 that now stands on its own as the University Library's Archives and Special Collections. As a writer Anne published three biographies (two of Agatha Christie's fictional detectives, Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot, and one of Labrador explorer Mina Hubbard) and many poems and short stories. Anne also guided other authors over many decades, edited scores of manuscripts, and was active in the St. John's literary community, and helped establish the Winterset Prize. For this work she obtained Library Research Professor status at Memorial University, an honourary degree from Memorial in 1997, and the Order of Canada in 2004. Anne loved Newfoundland, cats, dogs, horses, family, friends; literature, storytelling, theatre, politics, debate, and obviously the CBC; she shone at dinner parties, meetings, and planning sessions of all kinds. If you asked her a question, she would often answer with a good story, often funny; she was known for her wicked sense of humour. Anne was orphaned at the age of 7 and thereafter she and her siblings John and Mary were raised by Anita and Wylie Baird in Nova Scotia, on the Nappan Experimental Farm which Wylie managed. Anita was their aunt; she and Anne's father, Edgar Murray McCheyne Hill (civil engineer) hailed from Guelph, Ontario. Anne's mother Adeline Olive Earls (teacher) had emigrated from Clones, Ireland, after studying at Queen's University, Belfast. (John later settled in Montreal as a chemical engineer with his wife, Anne Christie; Mary married Robert Purdy and settled in Amherst, Nova Scotia). After several years attending the two-room school at Nappan, Anne continued her education at Netherwood School for Girls in Rothesay, New Brunswick, and went on to earn a BA at Kings College in Halifax (where she met and married David Hart; they remained lifelong friends), and a library degree from McGill University in Montreal. As a librarian, Anne worked briefly at the British Museum library, the Dalhousie University Library (where she was Kipling Librarian), Queen's University Library, and the Newfoundland Public Library, before going to work at the library at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) (where David taught in the Psychology Department and her three children Susan, Peter, and Stephen all studied and/or worked over the years). Anne was predeceased in 2010 by her second child, Peter Hart, an accomplished historian of the Irish Revolution who held the Chair of Irish Studies at MUN; this was the chief sorrow of her life. But she had many joys and accomplishments, and spent her last years with her daughter Susan in Victoria BC, frequently visited by her son Stephen (Kingston, Ontario). The strength of her personality shines on. In lieu of flowers, Anne's family would welcome tax deductible donations in Anne's memory to the Archives & Special Collections https://www.library.mun.ca/asc/archives/aboutus/ or the Centre for Newfoundland Studies https://www.library.mun.ca/cns/help/

SQUIRES Phyllis (Mercer)
Phyllis Squires (Mercer)
passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on October 21, 2019, at the age of 96. Born on Jan 11, 1923 at home, Phyllis was one of eight children. She was the last of her siblings to pass. Raised in the Mundy Pond area, she was wooed by a navy seaman, Dave Squires. As the story goes, it was the bicycle built for two that brought them together on a summer's day on Lemarchant Road. They married soon after on June 15, 1942. In her early years she worked at Mammy's Bakery in St. John's where she frosted cakes. However, the icing on the cake was her family where she truly devoted herself to her husband and raising her 13 children. What followed was an abundance of children, grand children, great grand children and great-great grandchildren. To say her children and family thought the world of her was an understatement. Phyllis always seemed to have a big smile on her face and could be heard saying "everything is fine, I'm alright". She was a faithful member of the Salvation Army St John's West Corps for many years. When I come to the end of the road And the sun has for me, I want no nights in a gloom filled room Why cry for a life set free. Miss me a little but not to long, and not with your head bowed down. Remember the love and laughter we shared, Miss me but let me go. For this journey, we all must make, It's all a part of the Master's plan, A step on the road to home. When you are lonely, go to friends we know, And bury your sorrows in doing good things. Miss me but let me go.
