ALLDERDICE, William Howard
Born In: Big Sandy, Montana, United States
Born: November 16th, 1930
Passed in: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Passed on: October 16th, 2017
November 16 1930-October 16 2017

On December 29th 2017 at 2:30 PM, family and friends will celebrate Bill's life in the Atrium of the Medical Education Centre, Clinch Crescent, Memorial U. of Newfoundland, St. John's. A potluck reception follows. Barrier-free access and parking available.
Bill was SON of Eva Deem and Howard Allderdice. They migrated from the Midwest to pioneer as homesteaders, raising five children on their dryland wheat and cattle ranch near Big Sandy Montana.
BROTHER of Bernice (Tom Schultz), Virginia (Dave West), Grace (John Swan), and Robert (Elizabeth Deshner).
HUSBAND of Penny Witte. Penny wrote: "I'll follow Bill to the ends of the earth." Later, she reflected,"'til death do we part' sounds like an awful long time." Bill replied: "Just take one day at a time."
FATHER of Edward, Jacob (Sharon Ho), and Frances. In 1981 Edward, an artist and poet, died in a bus crash.
GRANDFATHER to Jasper and Isabel Allderdice; Morgan, Celeste and Lillian Holland.
COWPOKE: So listed on his army discharge papers. Bill told of wild horses destined for the Calgary Stampede. His job was to walk them to water. Being lazy, he calmed and rode them. His boss saw. The next thing he knew, they were sold for meat.
ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHER: Bill was the first in his family to transition from an isolated rural childhood to urban universities. Bill's Ph.D. thesis at Columbia University (New York City) examined the economic advantage of transporting bananas over the new Belem-Brasilia Highway instead of by river. As professor of Geography at Memorial University he encouraged students to apply theories of economic geography to questions of urban/rural conflict influencing social and medical services.
"UNCLE BILL" / MENTOR: He cared for his students, celebrated their accomplishments and understood their concerns. He drew a hand holding a hammer, with the title: "Prof, will this be on the test?"
STORYTELLER / CONTEMPORARY ARTIST: Christine Koch, Artist in Residence at MUN Geography Dept, 1995-96 offered a weekly art class. Bill discovered he could bring his homestead memories to life. From then until his death, art became his major focus. He illustrated his vision of idyllic cowboy life: a horse, a young woman, a beautiful picnic spot, set against the reality of heat, sweat, and being bucked off. Often his wry sense of humour came through. One painting was titled "The Night the Four Horse people Could Not Ride:" Apocalypse had a revelation and let the horse free. War's horse was frightened by gunfire and ran away. Famine's horse got sleeping sickness and died. Death tried to rope the horse, but tripped on the scythe. A more recent painting was an elderly couple in rocking chairs beside a dog, and a potted plant. "Sometimes we talk to the dog, sometimes to the plant, and once in a while to each other." In spring 2016 Mireille Egan curated Bill's solo exhibit "Glimpses of Eden" at the Rooms, St. John's NL http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/bill-allderdice-exhibit-rooms-1.3746584
HUMANIST: Bill was active in the MUN Faculty Union. Believer in gender equality, already in his teens he informed his father that his sister and he were doing equal work and must receive equal pay.
Bill sought and enjoyed common ground and connection with all living beings. In celebrating Bill's life, let us continue to reach out to the living.

John was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was easygoing, principled, thoughtful and humble. He had a brilliant sense of humour, an incredible memory, and a remarkable gift for storytelling. He could turn his hand at anything, from building a house to knitting a sweater. Sixty-five years ago he owned a motorcycle. He liked dogs. He was an environmentalist before it was trendy to value the earth. He loved his family and took great interest not only in his own children but in the children of his brothers and sisters as well. His wife knew she was loved. Before he worked for the federal government, he spent five years with the Newfoundland Constabulary. He believed they taught him to stand up straight. At 90 years old he had outstanding posture. He cared about things. We cared about him. He'll be missed.
A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out.

CALVER, John Victor
Born: April 24th, 1945
Passed on: October 30th, 2017

Passed away peacefully after a full and rewarding life, John Victor Calver, age 72. John embraced every experience and shared his love, wit and stories with family, friends and people throughout the province and the country during his long broadcasting career. Leaving with cherished memories, his wife of 25 years, Jo-Ann Dooley; daughters Tara, Mandy and Emma; sons-in-law Mike Gerald and Pete Davidson; darling grandson Rowan Davidson; sister Peg Pearce; niece Debbie; nephews David and Jonathan Pearce and families; mother-in-law Barbara Dooley; sisters and brothers-in-law Tish Dooley and Loyola O'Brien, Barbara Dooley and Gordon Newhook and Tom and Lisa Dooley; nephews and nieces Noah, Kathleen, Patrick and Daniel O'Brien, Ryan and Kierra Dooley. John was the son of the late Victor and Jean Calver. As a boy he spent summers in his beloved Manuels where he explored sea and shore and developed his passion for the culture and history of Newfoundland. He found his true calling when he began reporting for CBC in the late 60's. His career took him around the world, but what mattered most to him was telling the stories of Newfoundlanders. He often said he was getting paid to do what he loved. His career included covering pivotal stories including the cod moratorium and the Ocean Ranger disaster. John was a loving husband and devoted dad to his three girls who he always guided with a gentle hand and supported with his whole heart. He was an avid hiker, camper, sailor and gardener. His great meals were legendary among friends. In later life he worked in tourism and delighted in sharing the history and legends of our province with hundreds of visitors. Our heartfelt thanks to all our family and friends who provided so much support during John's illness - from meals, to rides, to housework, yard work and everything else. We could not have gotten through this without you. We also thank the compassionate staff at the Palliative Care Unit and Eastern Health as well as close friend Dr. Karl Misik. Son, husband, father, grandfather, storyteller and most importantly a great listener. John will be missed by all who loved him so dearly. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 3rd, 2017 at St. Mary's Church on Craigmillar Avenue at 2 pm, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 7 pm at Bowring Park Bungalow, stories and instruments welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Health Care Foundation at healthcarefoundation.ca in support of the Palliative Care Unit or The Canadian Cancer Society.

Her acting continued with the St. John's Players for the many years after moving to the capital city. She accomplished many milestones in addition to raising a family. In her 50's she returned to school and studied as a Medical Dictatypist and worked at the Health Sciences Complex and later at private physician's clinics. Always passionate with writing and poetry, she wrote a poem for every occasion. She returned to school to pursue literary writing in her 70's. She belonged to several literary groups and her poetry and writing flourished. In her 80's she embarked on the journey of writing her first novel, though completed before her failing health, never published. She leaves to mourn her husband Brian; son David (Tina Dean); daughter Judi (Patrick Dobbin). We especially thank home caregivers Nelsa Marshall and Paula Sheldon for their loving and tender attention to her needs and wellbeing. We kindly request no visitation or flowers. Her last request: "Bury your sorrow in doing good deeds, Miss me...but let me go..." We applaud the life of a remarkable woman, wife and mother. A special thank you to Archdeacon David Pilling for assisting her request and supporting the family. Funeral service to be held at St. Augustine's Anglican Parish, Westerland Road, on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Resting place the Field of Honor, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, James Lane, St. Johns. He was a family man, his most enjoyable moments spending time with his children and grandchildren, taking a Sunday drive with his wife Phyllis often looking for his next project. You touched the heart of every person who was lucky enough to have known you. A devoted family man who went above and beyond for the ones he loved dearly. Dad's motto in life was "It's not what you got in life, it's how you give to others." Thank you for giving us your love.

In his own words, they played in a time when "hockey was hockey for sport". In his later years Cyril left Bell Island and moved to St. John's where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Julia Diamond. TUCK, Winnifred (nee Dawe)
Passed on: October 26th, 2017

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, after a short illness. Winnifred Tuck, in her 80th year, of Manuels, Conception Bay South, was born to her predeceased parents Arthur and Violet Dawe. She lived all of her life in CBS where she was born and raised her family. Winnifred, affectionately known as Winnie, was a loving, social lady who enjoyed Sundays, Christmas and Thanksgiving turkey and chicken dinners (don't forget her blueberry and partridge berry pudding!) with friends and family, and playing BINGO (which she often won!).
Winnie was a beloved and proud wife and best friend of Charlie Tuck, with whom she enjoyed 55 years together and found much enjoyment at their cabin in Hant's Harbor, Trinity Bay. She was the loving mother of her three children, Garry Tuck (Linda), of London, ON, Bonnie Greeley (Jim) of CBS, and Debbie Kwabiah (Allan), of St. John's. She was the cherished grandmother to her six grandchildren, Rebecca, Michael, Benjamin, Amy, Sarah and Daniel and two great-grandchildren Haley and Norah and her favorite cat Molly. She was devoted to her family and loved her grandchildren - they were her treasure and never left their company without a hug and a kiss. She shared much wisdom about her early years and upbringing. Winnie was always there for her family and never judging, treating all with respect and dignity. She will always be remembered for her kind heart and dedication to her family and friends, always placing their needs in front of her own and making that special effort to boil the kettle to serve tea to visitors or making phone calls. It is with much sadness and deep regret that we announce the passing of one of Bell Island's staunchest supporters and Newfoundland and Labrador's greatest advocates for those with disabilities, Joan Whelan, at the age of 77 years. Joan spent the majority of her years educating the youth of Bell Island, and defending and fighting for the rights of those unable to fight for themselves. She would be among the first to help those in need. Having lived most of her life with her own physical limitations did not deter the energy and enthusiasm she put into helping people help themselves by cutting through the red tape of bureaucracy. Friday, October 27, 2017 heaven received its newest angel. Joan, predeceased by her parents Stan and Ada Craig, has been reunited with her husband, Jim, and daughter, Judy. She leaves behind 5 loving children, Miriam (George) Brown, Craig (Rose), Jamie (Jenn), Kelly (Paul), and Grant (Lorraine), as well as 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 6 brothers, Aiden (Mary), Martin (Betty), Dan with whom she resided, Pat (Joyce), Philip (Judy), and Shawn (Marg); 2 sisters Beth McLean (Paul) and Marg Hussey (Freeman). As well, left to mourn are a large number of nieces and nephews, in-laws, many friends and special friends Ursula Lahey, Marg Bickford, Bern and Anne Marie Metcalfe. Joan has left an indelible mark on Bell Island, and will be sadly missed by all. Visitations will take place at Pendergast's Funeral Home Tuesday 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Wednesday 12 :00 to 9:00 pm and Thursday 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A celebration of Joan's life and legacy will take place at St. Michael's Church, Bell Island, NL on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 2:00pm with interment to follow at the RC Cemetery, Bell Island, NL.
