MERCER, Margaret, (Dinn) - died suddenly in her home in St John’s on October 12th, 2007. Born in Witless Bay on September 12th 1919, to James and Isabella Dinn, Margaret was one of nine children. Margaret spent more than 45 years helping others after graduating as a registered nurse from the General Hospital in St John’s. During the tuberculosis epidemic, Margaret spent twelve years working from the vessel “Christmas Seal,” selflessly devoting herself to serving the families of the out-ports of Newfoundland. Even after contracting the disease on two occasions, she persevered on her mission. Following her mission on the “Christmas Seal,” Margaret settled in Corner Brook where she and her husband Dick made many life long friends. “My heart will always be in Corner Brook,” she often said. After retirement, Margaret and Dick moved to St John’s to be reunited with family and friends. Predeceased by her husband, Richard, her brother, Jimmy and cousin, Anna in recent years. Margaret is survived by her daughters Valerie, (Windham, Maine), and Dawn, (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), and brother, Gordon (Montreal, Quebec). Heartfelt thanks from her family to her brother-in-law, Ken Mercer and wife Pat and cousin, Genevieve Dunphy and husband Bill, for their regular visits which were so appreciated and valued. A poem written by Margaret about her mother’s passing in 1940 reflects the way we feel about our Mom. “A precious one we loved is gone; a voice we loved is stilled; a place is vacant in our home; that never can be filled. Gone but never forgotten. In sad loving memory of Mom who passed to her Eternal Reward.” Donations may be made to the Newfoundland Lung Association, in lieu of flowers. A graveside service will be held at the cemetery in Witless Bay on Tuesday October 16th at 11 a.m. Family and friends are welcome.

“MISS ME BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no tears or gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little - but not for long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love we all shared,
Miss me but let me go.
For this is the journey we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
See family and friends we know,
Take time to heal, thou we must part,
Miss me --- But let me go...”

WOODFORD, Mary J. - Dec. 16, 1928 - October 5, 2007. Of Harbour Main: Simple as that, someone who managed to flatter her audience and herself simultaneously, while telling those tall tales of days gone by. At the end of her sentences she would make this strange sound or accent with her tongue, and you knew when you heard that sound, she meant exactly what she said, not leaving anyone behind to doubt her. This is a woman, who, come hell or high water, out with the rubbers on and elbow deep in the rich soil, which she tended to for many a season, hard as a nail pounded into stone, fragile as the naked hand holding the hammer. Mary left us on Oct. 5th, 2007. Leaving behind her clans, the “pops” and the “tars”. Predeceased by her husband and battle partner, William J. Woodford. Left with fond and loving memories are her nine children: Betty (Keith), Kyran, Olga, Laura (Steve), Donna (Charlie), Tina (Ron), Hilda (Glen), Willma (Gerard), Mart, 17 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters: Theresa, Anne, and one brother, Edward. Mary, Mary quite contrary how does your garden grow, and as Dad would say, Take your hands of red head Mary for she and I are to be wed. Goodbye to Mom and once again goodbye to Dad. Resting at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, with Mass of Christian Burial from SS. Peter and Paul Church, Harbour Main. Cremation to follow.
