It is with great sadness that the family of the late Philomena Marie Abbass (nee Madden) announce her peaceful passing on November 2, 2018 at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. She is predeceased by her loving father, Louis Madden. She will be forever missed and remembered by her devoted husband Doug, and her treasured children, Karla, Erika (Christian), Kaitlyn and Thomas. Philomena will also be sadly missed by her mother, Ignatia Madden of Grand Falls-Windsor, sisters Eileen, Barb (Keith), Jean (Dennis), Marie (David) and brother Bern (Marg), as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Philomena's infectious energy and positive spirit could be felt whenever she entered a room. Since arriving in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Philomena spent countless dedicated hours volunteering and giving back to the community through several organizations including the Eastern Labrador Arts Alliance/Lawrence O'Brien Arts Centre, the Labrador Creative Arts Festival, the Melville Music Festival and Mokami Players Drama Group. These were her passions and she loved giving to the Arts Community. When she wasn't busy volunteering, Philomena could often be found skiing and snowshoeing at Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club, singing in concerts, performing on stage and practicing in yoga. She loved to be active and involved, and her energetic presence and fun-loving nature was reflected in everything she did. Philomena worked as a dedicated school teacher in Goose Bay for 30 years, where she touched the lives of many children and worked alongside those who have become some of her most treasured friends. She was also a devoted member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish who believed in the power of prayer. Her faith, which remained steadfast, is what provided her unwavering strength and comfort until her last day. Visitation took place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Fitzgerald, Angie, Dr. Ahmad, Mandy (Inpatient Nurse) and the rest of the Labrador Health Centre staff. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of those who prayed for Philomena and sent their blessings over the last 16 months. We know there were many and we have felt and appreciated them all. Donations may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation or Mokami Players, P.O. Box 133 Stn. He completed his high school education and began working on a cartography ship called the Fort Francis circumnavigating from Halifax to the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon where he met his future wife, Theresa. They settled in Jerseyside and began their family. While working on the Argentia Naval Base, he completed the Civil Engineering Program and began to teach and mentor his coworkers. Edward started his own construction company 43 years ago and continues to be a major employer in the Placentia area. Always up for a game of cards or a trip to Las Vegas, he was well known for his winning ability and was commonly referred to as "Aces Ed". COLLINS, William "Bill" Augustus Q.C.
Passed on: November 21st, 2018

Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on November 21, 2018. Predeceased by his parents Bernard and Kathleen Collins; brother John Collins, and father-in-law Allan Healey. Leaving to mourn with loving memories his devoted wife of 42 years, Christine Collins; his sons Jonathan (Ashley) Collins, and Michael (Robin) Collins; his grandchildren Grace Collins, Benjamin Collins, and Lucy Collins; brothers Bernard/Tanny (Liz) Collins, Brian (Janet) Collins, Andrew (Shirley) Collins; mother-in-law Clara Healey; brothers-in-law Tony (Alma) Healey, and Terry (Jane) Healey; sister-in-law Carolann (Sean) Fleming. Also, numerous nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends and family. As the first boy to grow up on the first house on First Avenue, Bill was a charmer from his earliest days. The big brother of four boys, he breezed through school at St. Bon's and one (inaugural) year at Brother Rice, and many years of weeks-long scout camps. University on the mainland was the scene of more rigorous studies, but also development of his work-hard play-hard approach to life. A St. Francis Xavier and Dalhousie Law grad, Bill stood first in front of a judge in 1972; many greatly admired him. A Supreme Court Justice described him as the best ever seen in front of a jury. A person's dignity was always at the heart of his professional life; he was an early volunteer leader in the community, led Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Association and later as the Commissioner with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Bill fought hard, while fair, to right wrongs. His clients ranged from those wrongly convicted of murder, to those making creative use of a stolen backhoe. His efforts as a lawyer and advisor helped bring equality and equity to the Inuit of Labrador. The biggest part of his generous heart was saved for family. He was lucky in love. Marriage brought organization and direction while maintaining and building a circle of friends that enjoy life. His two sons became a new focus of his attention and caring. Coaching youth sport teams became a skill added to his repertoire. Yet another was cooking. An invitation to a dinner party at First Avenue or the cabin in Marysvale was a choice event. Later years brought grandchildren to his life, with whom laughter was a two-way street. The last six months of Bill's life was one of constant care at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Patrick's Mercy Home. The Collins Family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors, and all the other staff that brought compassionate attention to Bill every day. Cremation has taken place. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 7 - 9 pm on Saturday, November 24, 2018 and from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm on Sunday, November 25, 2018. Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 26, 2018 at 9:30 am from St. Pius X, with inurnment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory may be to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

Leaving to mourn with wonderful memories of 67 years is his wife Alice (Loretta) Hickey; his children Jimmy (Andrea), Jenny (Mike), Annie (Keith), Mary (Shawn), Pat, Catherine (Brad), Peter, Billy (Janna), Alice (Derek), Johnny, Michael, Stephen (Tina), Rodney (Niki). Predeceased by his parents James and Annie Hickey. His family and in-laws as follows: Pat Hickey (Betty), Elizabeth Cahill (Martin), Mary Power (John), Margaret Rose (Jack), Nell Houston (Will), Perpetua Tobin (Max), Peter Hickey (Kay), Margaret Rose (Jack), Alice Croke (William), Catherine Hickey and Maria Hickey, and James Cadigan (Nora), Mary Dyer Lynch (William), Bridie Power (Kevin), Michael Dyer (Rosella), Paddy Dyer (Bernice), Johnny Dyer (Linda), Bill Dyer (Ruth), Anne Kendall (Fred), Nell Devereaux (Paddy), Aggie Dyer, Madonna Bonia (Ray) and Johnny Lynch, 18 grandchildren: Corinna, Deena (Jason), Jamie (Jackie), Pamela, Terry (Alison), Charlene, Tonya (Jason), Krista (Gary), Natasha (Jason), Stephanie (Stephen), Ryan (Allison), Anna, Dalton, Brandon (Robyn), Cassidy, Dylan, Jacob, Zachary, 16 great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Maria, Emily, Michael, Reagan, Jayden, Jaime-Leah, Bradley, Ethan, Carter, Mason, Josh (Sheanne), Samantha, Heidi, Eric, Petra, one great-great-grandchild Lilah, special nephew Gerard Tobin (Ivy), special family friend Gary Noftall, his great buddies "The Stack Point Boys", as well as a large circle of relatives and friends, and special friend Hubert Bourne. Dad was a true inspiration for all who knew him. With only Grade 3 education, he could stand toe-to-toe with anyone. He could fix, repair and build anything and he always got the job done. He always knew how to laugh, loved to dance - especially the Bird Dance, Locomotion and Macarena. He never missed Mass and had a very strong belief in God. When Dad wanted to tell you something and wanted his point made, he would point his crooked finger at you and say, "I'm telling you right straight", and let me tell you, we listened. In his early years he loved to sing a good song, play the accordion, play the spoons, and mouth organ. He outlived all of his brothers and sisters. In the last several years he loved to go to "Stacks Point" every day to meet "the boys". He was always there to help everyone and he worked hard all of his life. He loved all of his children and got a great kick out of all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild and loved everyone equally. He always hummed a tune to himself and when you walked in the door, he always greeted everyone in his own kind way. He is our strongest link in our family chain and now that link is broken. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, Torbay with visitation on Sunday from 12-9 pm and Monday from 12-9 pm. Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 9:30 am from St. Francis of Assisi Church in Outer Cove with interment to follow at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully accepted or a donation may be made in James' memory to the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery Fund. Special thanks to Gloria Parsons and the Staff at Chancellor Park for their care and compassion as well as the staff at the Health Science Centre.

Studied at St. Patrick's College, Cavan, and University College Dublin (Medicine). He came to Newfoundland in 1962 to practice medicine, where he soon met Lois, the love of his life. Together they had a full and happy life, in Calvert on the Southern Shore, at the legendary 744 Water St., and Carbonear where Barry served as Head of the Radiology Department for 35 years. Barry was a compassionate and dedicated doctor, beloved by patients and staff alike. On his retirement in 2012, he was designated Honorary Medical Staff of the Carbonear General Hospital. Barry was a generous supporter and patron of the arts, involved in the revival movement of traditional music and culture in Newfoundland through the 70's and 80's. He opened his home to many a visiting musician from Ireland and parts abroad and his house was always full of music, friends and young people. All were welcome. He was the classic Renaissance man - a brilliant intellect and enthusiastic participant in all aspects of knowledge, history, poetry, music, science and philosophy. But most of all, Barry loved people. He befriended all, no matter their station in life, taking a genuine interest in their lives. A beloved father, grandfather and uncle, he was also a father figure to many of their friends and others, brought into his gentle sphere of love, guidance and inspiration. PARSLEY, Gordon James
Passed on: November 24th, 2018

Passed peacefully away on November 24, 2018, Gordon "Mush" Parsley, age 81 years. Dad was, to his family and friends, a man who was always there when needed. He was a man who expressed his love in deeds rather than in words. If one of his children needed something done, he did it. If he couldn't do it himself, he found a way to get it done. When his wife was stricken with health problems, he took care of her as best as he possibly could. If a friend was struggling and needed something, he gave them what he had. Indeed, he would give you the shirt off his back, even if it was the only one he had. Dad was not a man who showed a lot of emotion outwardly, but he had a huge heart and tremendous love and loyalty for his family, and for those closest to him. Predeceased by his wife Sadie and his son Gordie. He leaves to carry his memory and his spirit forward, his daughters Jackalin (John) – with whom he resided for several years until he entered the care home, Paulette (Leland) and Kimberly (Vince); grandchildren Ron (Camille), Liette (Brad), Vincent (Alicia) and Zachary as well as his great-grandson Bradley – who brought the brightest twinkle to his eye and the biggest smile to his face. Gordon also leaves a large circle of other family and friends. We are very thankful to the staff at Glenbrook Lodge and Pleasantview Towers for the care provided to Dad in his waning years. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dad's life will be held at a later date.

YOUSE, Dr. Christopher
Passed on: November 27th, 2018
1948-2018

With deep sorrow, Christopher Paul Youé's children, Ben and Emily, announce their father's death on November 27, 2018, surrounded by family, after fighting a lengthy illness so courageously. Born on February 13, 1948 in Ilford Essex, England, he made his way to Canada as a young man to study at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Chris fashioned himself a renaissance man; he was brilliant, funny, and an amazing musician, loyal and full of energy. As his career evolved, he distinguished himself academically with numerous publications and conference papers. He was an exceptional orator who held the gift of reading his audience and delivering his subject with flare, wisdom, and emotion. His dedication to his students was unwavering, often going beyond the call of duty to support them with care and compassion. Chris was committed to the Canadian Association of African Studies, which produces the Canadian Journal of African Studies. He served for three decades on the Executive Board, including two terms as President. He also served for 21 years as an editor of the Journal and was Editor in Chief for five of those years. He was a man of principle and social justice. If there was a cause worth fighting for, he was "on it." Stepping on a few toes never deterred him from what he believed to be just. He was a much-loved professor of History at Memorial University of Newfoundland for over 30 years. He was an inspiration to his students and was acknowledged in MacLean's special university edition as best loved professor. Chris also held strong ties to his beloved England and would seek out any bar in any part of the world to catch a game featuring his much-loved football team West Ham United. Chris' thirst for life was unquenchable. He was a world traveler, loved new experiences, great wine and food. But mostly this "one of a kind" man loved his family. His son Ben and his daughter Emily rocked his world. His four gorgeous grandchildren, Kingston, Esmé, Easton, and Winsloe, were his joy, and from whatever part of the world he was exploring, he never missed an opportunity to Skype. As his daughter's home became quiet immediately following his death, his eldest grandson 6-year-old Kingston said: "I know he died Granny, but Grand Dad's heart will live with us forever." Dr. Christopher Paul Youé was the son of the late Herbert John Youé and the late Elsie May Youé (Beverley). He was predeceased by his brother Anthony (Jean), and is survived by brother Stephen Mills (Susan) and sister Deborah. Chris is also survived by his two children Benjamin (Christina) and Emily (James) as well as his four gorgeous grandchildren Kingston, Esmé, Easton, and Winsloe. Many cousins, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends that he cherished also survive him.
