COADY, Catherine Cecilia (Burke) R.N.
Published: June 05, 2021
From Mount Pearl, NL passed away on the 31st May, 2021. Originally from Colliers, NL, she is predeceased by her parents James and Cecilia Burke and in-laws William and Lucy Coady. Cathy leaves to mourn her husband Bill; her loving daughters Renee (Geoff) Churchill and Lori. Loving Nan to her grandsons and "bestest boys" William and Matthew, both of whom she was so deeply proud. The youngest in a long line of siblings, predeceased by Patrick, James, and Betty, and sister-in-law Anne Coady, she is survived by her sister Ann, and treasured niece Sheila. She will be dearly missed by her numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her large circle of in-laws and extended family, particularly sisters-in-law Paula (Dominic), Margaret, Patricia (Des), Marilyn (Hazen), Anna, and brother-in-law Derm. A proud graduate from St Clare's School of Nursing, Cathy worked as a Registered Nurse at Palliative Care for many years. Cathy was a fiercely loyal and generous friend to many; so many that to try and name them all would be impossible. She was creative in her way of connecting with people; she was insightful, would hold a secret like a vault, and had a curious way of knowing when people were in need. Her strength, resilience and calm way of dealing with any crisis ensured she was always one of the first to be reached out to for advice. She could always be counted on to play a tune, or two, on one of her accordions and she made sure that her home was constantly filled with music. If anyone ever left the Coady home hungry or thirsty, or not tapping their feet to the music, then it was said to be their own fault. Her love of music could only be matched by her devotion to the Boston Bruins. It was a devotion that spurred many goodnatured family "discussions" with those who dared to favour another hockey team. It was best to heed her advice for the player picks for a Stanley Cup Final pool; somehow, she just knew where the points would go. The family wishes to say a special thank-you to her very good friend Jackie Tucker, whose support, care and kindness during her final days were appreciated more that she will ever know. The family also wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and empathy during Cathy's final days. Cremation has taken place. Due to COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, a private burial and celebration of life will be planned for a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carnell's Funeral Home. Donations in Cathy's memory can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Peter's Parish.

CORCORAN, Gary Gerard
Published: June 01, 2021
Gary Gerard Corcoran, from Paradise, Newfoundland, died at home on May 26, 2021 at the age of 60, after living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) since 2018. Gary is survived by his wife Gayle, sons Colin and Christopher, and a large, loving family of siblings: Shirley (Adrian) Yetman, Walter (Agatha) Corcoran, Patrica (Earl) Kielly, Doris (Desmond) Lewis, Carolann (Michael) Lewis, Edward (Marie) Corcoran, Yvonne (Clarence) Tobin, Valentine (Anne) Corcoran and Phyllis Tarrant. Gary is pre-deceased by his parents, Valentine and Dorothy, brother Jack and sister Mary. Gary also leaves behind his cherished dog, Harry. Everything about Gary was big: he lived every day with gusto and had a voracious appetite for everything life had to offer. No challenge was too big. Gary had a 30-year career at RBC Dominion Securities with clients and colleagues from across Canada, a lifetime of service with various charities including the St. John's Rotary Club and Saint John Ambulance. The only thing greater than his commitment to community was his love for his family and friends. Among a lifetime of accomplishments, Gary will best be remembered for his love of food and passion for cooking. His kitchen was his castle, and even when he was travelling, you could always find Gary in a kitchen somewhere. He was an adventurous chef, a generous host, and an enthusiastic teacher. When he was diagnosed with ALS, he turned his focus to writing a 320-page cookbook filled with his own recipes, a legacy to his lifetime of work. So how does one sum up a life so fully and generously lived? It's all there, on every single page of Gary's cookbook. Try new things. Share with others. Add spice—lots of it. And most importantly, Gary's last word in almost every recipe: "enjoy". The entire Corcoran family is filled with gratitude for everyone on Gary's care team. In particular, thank you to the ALS multidisciplinary team at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, and Dr. Susan MacDonald, with the palliative care unit at Eastern Health in St. John's for helping give Gary the best quality of life he could have while living with ALS. And thanks to the many friends who visited Gary, bringing him his favourite food and meals over the last year. Due to COVID-19, there will be no funeral service. If you want to honour Gary, please make a donation to Sunnybrook Foundation - ALS Clinic or the Stoker's Club of St. John's Rotary. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

DONADIO, Shelagh (Malone)
Published: May 29, 2021
Shelagh Donadio of Vaughan, Ontario passed away on May 23, 2021 with her loving children by her side. Pre-deceased by her beloved husband Joe in 2016, her mother Mercedes Malone, her brothers Kevin, David, and Kip Malone and her sister Mary Skinner, Shelagh is remembered with much love and affection by her children and grandchildren, her sister Sharron Peet, as well as members of her extended family and friends in Ontario and in Newfoundland. Born and raised in the west end of St. John's, Shelagh attended St. Patrick's School and Holy Heart of Mary. Like many of her generation, when she finished high school she headed to the 'mainland' for work. Shelagh went to Ontario, where several of her siblings had already moved, and got a job at Toronto Pearson airport. It was there that she met Joe Donadio, the love of her life. They dated, fell in love, married, had a family and enjoyed a partnership that would last almost five decades. Shelagh and Joe enjoyed a wonderful life. They raised two devoted children, Paul (Danielle) and Laura (Rob Martire), and were blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, Payton, Daniel, and Lucas. Family was important to Shelagh and Joe. They opened their home freely and many a meal was shared at their table. Shelagh and Joe often housed her Newfoundland family for holidays, work-term jobs, singing competitions, and much more. Although Shelagh made her home in Ontario, a big piece of her heart still belonged to Newfoundland. She enjoyed trips back home and in recent years she, Joe, their children, and grandchildren were able to visit. She delighted in these trips, catching up with family and friends, and was particularly happy to show her grandchildren her birthplace. Shelagh will be remembered for her gentle and caring ways. She was thoughtful, kind and always interested in hearing how you were doing. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed researching her family genealogy, loved listening to Carol King and Van Morrison, and appreciated a good game of Scrabble. She loved exchanging letters and phone calls with her family and friends, and never ended a phone call without telling the person on the other end that she loved them. Shelagh was taken too soon but leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and friendship. We will miss her but were blessed in having known her.

GIOVANNINI, Celia Anne Marie
Published: June 08, 2021
(CeAnne and Celie to most) came into this world on May 22, 1955 in St. Lawrence, NL. The last of nine children CeAnne hit the ground running and never stopped. Whether it was in the garden, along Shoal Cove beach, on the soccer fields or through the halls of the many hospitals she worked in, CeAnne always had energy to spare. She was motivated, and guided, by her enormous heart and her love for family and friends. There was literally nothing she would not do for either. And did it she did. Every single person touched by CeAnne's love and generosity will attest to this. CeAnne was multi-talented. A St. Clares Nurse, CeAnne was an extraordinary RN and co-worker. She truly loved being a nurse and part of talented and compassionate teams. As a production manager & graphic designer, she taught these skills where she learned them, at Ryerson University. Over the years she steered and executed quite literally thousands of projects - both professional & personal - through to exquisite perfection. As a woman who loved to work with wood, and had a knack for all things carpentry, paint and 'please fix what Meg broke' related, there is a long line of people and places that benefitted from her generous talents. CeAnne always did the right thing. Her integrity was beyond reproach. Her mantra was 'do the right thing, especially when no one is looking'. And that is exactly how she lived her life. This extraordinary daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, wife, fur-mom, friend and co-worker was a force a nature. She was inclusive in her actions all the time. It is for all of these, and so many more reasons, that it makes saying good-bye to CeAnne so difficult. But say it we must - until we meet again. We can say with certainty that CeAnne is truly at peace. And for this we are grateful. Predeceased by Mother & Father: Celestine (d. 1961) & Olivia (nee Murray d. 2010) Giovannini. Parents-in-law: Adrian Harry (d. 2014) & Mary (d. 2013) Vis. Spouse: Margaret Mary (Meg) Vis. Furbabies: Avalon (and Sydney, Haley, Shadow, Tori, Tiga and Lady). Predeceased by Older Brothers: John (d. 2011, Beverley) and Gregory (d. 1995, Wilhelmina) Giovannini; and brother-in-law Michael Vis (d. 2015). Siblings: Elizabeth Dobbin (St. John's), Adolphe Giovannini (Danica, St. John's), Jeanette Holden (Dave, Mount Pearl), Mary Chidley (Michael, Renews), Ethel Giovannini (St. John's), E. Patrick Giovannini (Vancouver). Families-in-law: Cathy & Steve Previdsa (Michael, Josh), Anne Vis & Keith Johnson (Clara). A very large contingent of Nieces, Nephews, Grand Nieces and Grand Nephews whom she loved as her own. And an even larger list of friends who made CeAnne's life richer. Of special note: Frances Gibbons, Marilyn Thompson & June Layden, Colleen Tapper & Annette Conway, Georgina Short & Louise Cormier, Roz Giovannini. Finally we would like to acknowledge the remarkable care that CeAnne received from a large and supportive team of health professionals from the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, Health Sciences Centre and most especially Community Health, Major's Path and the Palliative Care Unit/Pain Management team of Eastern Health. We are particularly grateful to Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Mathieson, Dr. Fardy, Carmel Collins NP and team, and April Adams RN. In lieu of flowers we suggest the following options: Gifts in Memory directed to the Health Care Foundation in support of the Palliative Care Unit (https://healthcarefoundation.ca/donate/in-memory-donations/, 777.5926. Happy Valley-Goose Bay SPCA (https://www.hvgbspca.com/donate--help.html, (709) 896-7387. Due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation. There will be a celebration of life at a later date.

MARTIN, The Honourable Leonard A., Q.C.
Published: May 29, 2021
1931 - 2021
Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, March 1931; died in Ottawa, Ontario, May 2021. Predeceased by his father Albert, mother Margaret, sisters Peggy and Gertrude, and stepmother Loretta. Survived by his loving wife, Heidi, to whom he was dedicated for 63 years, and their children: Krista (David), Robert (Lynn) and J. (Debbie) and grandchildren Jessica and Shelby, Sarah and Amber, and Zachary; and by his sisters Joan and Catherine. Leonard was admitted to the bars of Nova Scotia ('55) and Newfoundland ('56), and founded a general law practice in Corner Brook, NL in 1956, initially with partners Gordon Easton, Frederick Woolridge and Edward Poole, and later joined by Paul Althouse, Noel Clarke, Carl Thompson, Leonard Thomas and Joseph Hutchings. Led by Leonard's example, the partners were not only business associates but also close friends for many years. Leonard was a well-respected corporate and trial lawyer throughout the Province for some 30 years, known for his in-depth preparation, knowledge of the applicable law and his soft-spoken determination. From 1978 to 1985 Leonard's law practice was focused on special assignments, as lead counsel to several marine investigations (incl. the Federal-Provincial Royal Commission on the Ocean Ranger Marine Disaster) and on the Upper Churchill Water Rights Reversion Act reference to the Supreme Court of Canada. He was appointed to the Trial Division of the Federal Court of Canada in 1985 and moved to Ottawa with Heidi. Although he went to high school and university in Toronto (U of T '52) and to law school in Halifax (Dalhousie '55) and ultimately moved to Ottawa, Leonard was a true Newfoundlander. While living in Newfoundland he enjoyed many travelling adventures with Heidi and his children, skiing at Marble Mountain, and sailing the waters around Pilley's Island and beyond (to the Funk Islands and back in '85) with his family and friends. Good times were also had at the barn/farm at Humber Village to which Leonard devoted many hours, supported by his trusty green pickup. Following his retirement and living in Ottawa, Leonard enjoyed road trips with Heidi, visits from his children and grandchildren, woodworking with his friend Gordon, cross-country skiing, riding his motorcycles, feeding the wildlife on the back deck, and gardening (including some very interesting plants). Our family is grateful to the wonderful staff at St Patrick's Home in Ottawa for their exceptional care of and support for Leonard over the past five years. For anyone wishing to make a donation in Leonard's memory, please consider the St Patrick's Home of Ottawa Foundation - https://stpatsfoundation.ca/ways-to-give/; cards may be addressed to the family c/o St. Pats at 2865 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON K1V 8N5. Aged 77
Passed peacefully away on May 30, 2021 in the presence of his loving family following a long illness. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his partner, Bernadette Carew, his daughters Lenore, Karla (Bryan) and Vicki (Justin), his step sons Cory (Angie), Curtis (Cortney), Chad (Jen), his adoring grandchildren Riley, Liam, Abby, and step-grandchildren Kaia and Zoey, Nathan and Paige, his sisters Mary (Bert), Marian (Dave), Roseanne (Wade), his brother Thomas (Rose), close friends Eric Maloney, Ed and Carmel Hodder, John Deagen and Irene Ploughman, and so many other friends and extended family. Leonard was a hard-working man who was well respected and loved in his community. The water was in his blood and he would rather spend his days out there in his boat, than anywhere. He was the biggest Blue Jays fan. In the middle of any get together, you'd find him hidden away watching the game. His dry sense of humour and sarcasm could put a smile on any face. He'll be sadly missed by all who loved him. We know for sure his good buddies Sammy Carter, Mickey Cahill, Ed Houlihan, and Joey Carey are waiting at the gates with some rum and a drop of beer. Leonard's family would like to extend their thanks to family and friends who visited and helped out over the last several months. Further thanks to the kind staff at St. Claire's Hospital who made his last couple of weeks easier for him. At Leonard's request, there will be cremation only with no service. All other arrangements entrusted to Ryan's Funeral Home. Celebration of life to be held at a later date when everyone can get together freely and truly celebrate.

RICHLER, Evelyn M. (Eve)
Published: September 04, 2021
Sadly, on May 7, 2021, Eve passed away peacefully at home, after a short bout of cancer. Eve was born on October 1, 1948, to Eric and Myrtle Tippett, both deceased. From her moment of birth, her smile dazzled all. Whenever she entered a room, all were embraced by her openness, and welcoming personality. Eve is leaving to mourn her loving husband, Avrum, her brothers John (Linda), and Wade, as well as her aunt Joyce (Clarence), her special cousin Doris, of Ottawa, and her niece Nancy of Whitby, as well as an extended family of cousins. Sadly, Eve lost two brothers earlier, Robert (Bobby) and Carl. She loved and will be missed by her stepchildren Joel (Maureen), Michael (Sandy), Lawrence (Carol), Dvorah (Steve), and Jonathan (Kim). She enjoyed being Grammy Eve to her step grandchildren and step great grandchildren, all in mainland Canada and the USA. Eve was an avid bridge player, and her many bridge buddies will find it difficult to replace her fun loving attitude at the bridge table. She also enjoyed being on the golf course with Avrum, a game they played together during their wonderful 32 year marriage. For many years, the two of them travelled to Florida with friends in the spring and sometimes in the fall, for much needed rest and relaxation. A favourite destination was New York, where she and Avrum visited the Metropolitan Museum and relished the attractions of Broadway. She was happy when travelling, having also visited Paris, London, Norway and Iceland. A few years ago, she and Avrum spent two weeks travelling through Israel, her favourite spot being Masada. Eve loved to sing, and music always surrounded her at home. In the last few years, she enjoyed accompanying herself on the piano while singing her favourite songs. She was happiest in her kitchen, and she and Avrum hosted many dinner parties in their home. While ill at home, she was looked after by a wonderful group of caregivers from Comfort Home Care, and by her superb team from the Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre. Special thanks to Dr Pamela Snow, and Dr Jonathan Greenland, and the nurses and staff of Community Health, and Palliative Care of St John's. As well, the many friends, as well as neighbours of Macpherson Avenue, who all offered assistance and love, receive grateful thanks from family. Eve was cremated as was her wish. A funeral service will be held from The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 11 a.m. At the request of the family, please consider leaving your condolences on Mrs. Richler's obituary page at www.carnells.com if you have not been fully vaccinated. In lieu of flowers, donations to cancer research, or a charity of your choice will be gratefully accepted.
