HAWCO (nee Flynn), Pauline - In her 97th year: Loving mother, grandmother, aunt and devoted friend passed peacefully away in her daughter's home in Chapel's Cove on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Pauline is now reunited with her beloved husband, John (1969) aka "her Jack," her best friend Edith Corbett (2006), her parents (Thomas and Jane Flynn), all her brothers and sisters (Edward, Patrick, Joseph, Thomas, Frances, James and Veronica), son-in-law Oliver Jones and many lifetime friends. Leaving with fond and loving memories are her son Dominic (Nancy), daughters: Loretta Jones and Lena (Walsh) Griffis; caring son-in-law, Gary Griffis; grandchildren: Karen Hawco, Regina and Charlotte Jones, Melissa and Adam Walsh; great-grandchildren: Samantha, Sabastian, Steven, Alexander, Ryan, Jordan and Logan; her dearest nephew, James Dalton as well as a large circle of family and friends. Pauline was a proud Newfoundlander who lived by the motto "hard work never killed anyone" and she was living proof of that. Pauline was always in the shadows making things happen, never wanting any recognition but motivating others to do the impossible, often with very little. She was a homemaker and farmer who lived for her children and grandchildren. Even near the end, she was more worried about her family than herself. Pauline loved to sew and knit and many bags of rags and wool were turned into beautiful things for her family and friends to enjoy. Although her life was centered on her family, she enriched the lives of everyone she met with her smile, quick wit, warm-heartedness, humility, love, determination and genuine concern for people. She often said that she had changed the diapers of every child in the cove and she cared for each one as if they were her own. Pauline used her skills and creativity to provide whatever was needed for her family, friends, and community. As per her wish, she was able to stay at home with us to the end. Special thanks to Dr. Russell and Carol Ann Lake, Shelly Seward and Rev. Clem Flaherty for their care, compassion, help and guidance during her final months which made that possible. She fostered in her children and grandchildren her passion for life, her love of learning, importance of family and friendship, her strength and determination, and the inspiration that there isn't anything you can't do if you put your mind to it - her legacy will live on in each of us. Resting at Dunphy's Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation on Wednesday from 7 - 9 p.m., Thursday from 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. & 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 with Mass of Christian Burial from Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Harbour Main, with interment to follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Chapel's Cove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, Harbour Main. Please visit www.dunphys.ca to sign the memorial guest book or to send a message of condolence.
