CARELESS, Janet Eleanor (Jennie), nee Marshall - Passed away peacefully
at home in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England, on Saturday May 27, 2006, after
a courageous battle with cancer.
Born July 21, 1915, in Rotherham, Jennie was educated at Alma Road and South
Grove schools. In November 1939, she married Tom Careless at Rotherham Parish
Church, a union which was to last for sixty-six years. During the Second
World War, for her part in the war effort, Jennie was employed at Metrovicks,
Sheffield, drilling and fabricating parts for Spitfire fighter planes, until
temporarily relocating to Taunton in Somerset to be with her husband who
was serving as a REME Warrant Officer, prior to the invasion of Normandy
in 1944.
After the war, they settled down to married life in Rotherham, until emigrating
to Canada with their son David in 1958. Jennie lived on Bell Island, in Conception
Bay, Newfoundland, for eight years, during which time she forged many friendships
which have endured throughout the rest of her life. In 1966, Jennie and her
family moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia. During her short stay in the province,
she worked at Simpsons-Sears, and, with Tom, frequently enjoyed the hospitality
and company of the Vimy Branch, Royal Canadian Legion.
In 1969, Jennie relocated to St. John's, Newfoundland, and resided in Mount
Pearl and at Nagles Hill for ten years. During this time they enjoyed many
holidays and weekend excursions in their VW camper van, exploring the length
and breadth of Newfoundland. Jennie worked at Ayres fashion store in the
Avalon Mall, St. John's until retirement and a return to the United Kingdom.
Upon resettling in England, Jennie and her husband resided for thirteen years
in the spa town of Harrogate and enjoyed the idyllic countryside of the Yorkshire
Dales, becoming particularly adept at discovering new hostelries in which
to enjoy a drink and a traditional 'pub lunch'. In 1992, they moved once
again, returning to the familiar surroundings of Rotherham, some 34 years
after leaving the town for Canada.
Jennie enjoyed the simple things which life had to offer. A country ramble
and dinner each Saturday with Tom and her sisters, the view from her kitchen
window overlooking the garden, flower beds and the only Canadian maple tree
in the vicinity, hanging her washing on the line on a sunny day, and, true
to her Yorkshire background, browsing Rotherham's market and charity shops
in search of bargains. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Not to mention the birds, who knew to expect kitchen scraps and bread crumbs
every day, without fail, rain or shine.
She is survived by her husband Tom, (Rotherham, Yorkshire), son David and
grandchildren Erin and Jon (Halifax, Nova Scotia), sisters Barbara Marshall
(Sheffield, Yorkshire) and Gladys Sealey (Swallownest, Yorkshire), and is
fondly remembered by her former daughter-in-law, Annette Wright (Bedford,
Nova Scotia). She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Marshall.
Donations towards cancer research in memory of Jennie would be the most appropriate
and suitable way to acknowledge her life and her passing.

COSTIGAN, Christy Diane (nee Robertson) - 1973 - 2006. It is with great
sadness mixed with joy, that our family announces the passing of Christy
Diane Costigan (nee Robertson) on Monday, May 15, 2006 to be with the Lord.
Christy was born in Scarborough, ON June 4, 1973 to Alexander (Sandy) and
Beth Robertson. She grew up with her older sister, Brienne in Stouffville,
ON where her life dream of working with young offenders began to develop.
She moved with her parents to Calgary in 1989 where she eventually graduated
from Mount Royal College. Christy had already begun working as a volunteer
at the Calgary Young Offenders Centre, when she was seventeen years old.
She loved her work which had become her profession and fulfilment of her
childhood dream. She met her husband, Andr at C.Y.O.C. They were married
on October 28, 2000. They celebrated the arrival of two beautiful boys, Kaleb
Alexander, now four years old and Levi Ethan now twenty-two months. Christy
loved people; she had a great sense of humour and joie de vivre. She faced
many crises in her life with tremendous resilience. These particular qualities
plus her faith in God, gave her the courage and determination to fight the
battle of breast cancer. She fought hard. She fought well. She fought through
pain and humiliation. She fought long. She died with dignity and grace, with
her beloved husband at her side. Christy has left a legacy of love and wonderful
memories to all who knew her. We will miss her. Those wishing to pay their
respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway's Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot
Circle N.W.) today from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A service to celebrate Christy's
life will be held at Rockpoint Church, Highway 1A and Lochend Road West.

JANES, Robert C, (WO Retired) - It is with great sadness we announce
the passing of Bob Janes, on May 10, 2006,
beloved husband and father, brother and friend. Bob was born on Pool's
Island, Nfld., November 13th 1936, the son of Emily (Dyke) and John Janes.
As a child he moved to Portugal Cove near St. John's and left there at
the age of 20, when he joined the Army Corps of Engineers (August 1956).
He spent his army years mostly in Chilliwack and 3 postings to Germany.
In 1983 he retired to beautiful downtown Nictaux Falls with his wife
Nancy and sons Cory and Cannon. He created a home from an old school
and became a very community minded citizen. He supported his church,
became a scout leader, sang in the Valley Men's Gospel Choir and volunteered
with the Nictaux Youth Group. His passions in life were his family, his
wife Nancy and his sons, Cory (basketball player extraordinaire), Terence
Bay, Hfx. Co., NS and Cannon (an officer and a gentleman), Cole Harbour,
Halifax Coun! ty. They called him, "our dad the miracle
man" because he could
fix anything and did so with great joy. He loved his time at the cottage
on Zwicker Lake and his old yellow 1936 Dodge, playing duplicate bridge
on Monday nights in Wilmot, auctions and Saturday morning yard sales.
In 1992 he started his business (Janes' Power Tools) and this gave him
immense enjoyment. He was a jack-of-all trades and master of many as
many of his customers can attest too. He loved a challenge; the impossible
fired his creative mind and made him tick. How he loved life and laughter.
When he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in January 2005, he decided
to live each day his way - no medical treatment, just food, family and
friendship to sustain his body and soul. He lived and died his way, surrounded
by those he loved and knowing how much he was loved. He is survived by
his wife the former Nancy Thompson; sons: Cory (Jennifer Nauss), Terence
Bay; Cannon, Cole Harbour and sister, Loretta Sheppa! rd, Portugal Cove,
Nfld. He was predeceased by his first wife, Franzis ka in 1970; a sister,
Madeline Squires and his in-laws, Charlie and Evelyn Thompson. Visitation
will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006 in Middleton Funeral
Home (902)825-3448. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday,
May 13, 2006 in Nictaux Baptist Church. Rev. Bill McLeod officiating.
Interment will be in the Nictaux Cemetery. Donations in memory may be
made to Dr. Catherine McNally, Annapolis Valley Palliative Care. Online
condolences may be sent to middletonfh@ns.sympatico.ca

Predeceased by his wife Annie on March 28, 2004. Surrounded by his children,
our father, David passed away peacefully at St. Patrick's Mercy Home.
Dad died as he lived, on his own terms, in his own time. Dad enjoyed
his 73+ years. In health he lived each day to the fullest, filled with
work, family, music and good friends. The door was always open and everyone
was welcome into his home. If there was a song being sung you had to
join in, he believed everyone could sing. The participation was what
mattered. Dad worked hard, loved hard and played hard. Life was good.
He asked us not to cry for him, just to remember him with love, laughter
and above all music. He will always be in the hearts of his children.
Leaving behind his seven daughters: Ann Marie (Paul) Raynes, Connie (Mick)

nephews, relatives and friends. Special thanks to the many caregivers

NOLAN, Sheelagh Margaret - 43, Halifax. It is with heavy hearts that we announce
the passing of a much loved mother, sister, daughter and friend. Fiesty to
the end, Sheelagh passed away peacefully at the QE2 in Halifax on May
1, 2006,
with family and friends at her side after a courageous 4 year battle with cancer.
Born in Halifax, she grew up in St. John's, Nfld., and later returned with
her family to Halifax where she attended Halifax West High School. She went
on to attend St. Francis Xavier University, where she fell in love with her
husband, Danny Graham. Sheelagh graduated from X in 1984 with a BSc. and went
on to work as a dietitian at the VG Hospital. She loved her work and brightened
the days for all of her patients. Sheelagh was active with numerous school
and community events, most recently throwing herself into the Autism Golf Ball
fundraiser in Halifax. She loved traveling, reading and researching her family
genealogy. A natural athlete, Sheelagh enjoyed beating her brothers-in-law
at tennis and ping pong, and was a proud, hockey, lacrosse and soccer Mom.
She was a mediocre tarabish player but played with gusto. Most importantly,
Sheelagh was a devoted and dynamic mother, and was incredibly proud of her
boys. She had an indomitable spirit, a great sense of humor and loved a good
laugh. She and her family have been very grateful for the deep love and support
they received from their many friends as well as neighbours (who have been
like family). They are indebted to countless medical professionals who cared
for her and fought with her for these challenging years. She is survived by
her loving husband of 20 years, Danny Graham, sons Patrick, Andrew and Colin;
parents, Frank and Maureen (Casey) Nolan; sisters, Kathleen (Louis Boileau),
Maura (Mike Smeltzer), Coleen (Luke Eliot), all of Halifax and brother Chris
(Paula) of Ottawa; many adoring nephews and nieces, and sisters and brothers-in-law.
She was pre-deceased by her pal, sister-in-law, Norma Graham. Visitations will
be held at Pier 21 National Historic Site, 1055 Marginal Rd. (behind the Via
Rail Station) on Thursday May 4, noon - 3 p.m. There will be a memorial service
at 7 p.m. on the same day (May 4) followed by further visitations. A private
family funeral will be held Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to the Provincial Autism Centre, 1456 Brenton St., Halifax. B3J 2K7. Online
