VEITCH, John (Jack) Francis Stephen - Peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, the 4th. day of May, 2003, in his 86th year. Devoted husband to the late Louise Mary Burke. The son of the late William Veitch and Mary Elisabeth (Min) Carroll of Holyrood, Newfoundland and brother to Anne and the late George, Elizabeth, Greg, William, James and Fred. Father to Alma (Larry), Anne (Rolly), Irene (Richard), Louis (Julie), Brian (Maxime), Ruth (Marty), George (Catharine), Ian, Mary, Judy, Mark (Cindy) and the late Patrick, Hugh and Paul Craig. Grandfather to Debbie (Ross), Lisa (Jason), Ryan, Sara, Nicholas, Anthony, David (Kysha), Christopher, Ben, Jessica, Danny, Jason, Jennifer, Emily, Devon, Laura, Thomas, Nathanial, Aynsley, Adam, Jasmine, Shannon, and the late Dennis and Jeffrey. Great-grandfather to Teagon, Kyle and Calvin. He will be proudly remembered and always loved as a man who wanted to help the people of the world. His work in Canadian and international development encompassed the far corners of the earth including St. Albans and Marystown in Newfoundland; Inuvik and all the communities of the North West Territories and Nunavut; Kuching on the island of Borneo; Thabana di Mele in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, southern Africa; Island Lake in northern Manitoba; and Lampang in Thailand. He finally settled in what became our family home, Ottawa. Our father took the challenges faced by the people of these far flung communities and made them his own. His purpose was to work with them to achieve a higher standard of living by forming cooperative units. When he left a community, it was in the hope he had made a difference in their lives and for many, he had. Our father placed value in people, not things, and he took pride in the fact that 40 years after his departure, the people of the community of Inuvik remember and speak fondly of Jack Veitch. We all saw his life long traits of courage, perseverance and eternal optimism which allowed him to face these challenges and succeed where others had failed. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the range of people he successfully made contact with. He was able to find the words that closed the distance between the man from the outports of Newfoundland and the Inuit of Canada`s artic circle or the Iban people in the jungles of Borneo on the equator. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean (between Bayshore Drive and Baseline Road) on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 194 Fourth Avenue on Thursday, May 8, at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Hope Cemetery.
