BARNES Grant Cambridge
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Grant Cambridge Barnes on March 4, 2020. This kind man leaves behind many people to cherish the memories he brought to their lives. First and foremost is Olive, his wife and partner for 69 years. She was his world, his Queenie. Grant also leaves his children with happy memories of him: Dianne (Mike), Wayne (Violet), Wanda (Ron), Rosalie (Rod), and Donna (John); his grandchildren: Amy, Amanda, Adam, Chris, Ashley, Kelsey, and Josh; and great-grandchildren: Ashton, Ayden, Parker, Jaxon, Presley, Paisley, Sawyer, and Alexander. He also leaves behind his sister Cathy (Wally) and many relatives and friends.
Grant was a provider for his family. He gave them all they needed for a happy life. He gave them his love, support, and respect. Grant knew how to make people happy. He was one of the first clowns in the St. John's Christmas parade. A child's smile brightened his day. He perfected many clown and magic tricks for just that purpose. He could roll a coin through his fingers better than anyone, much to the amusement of young eyes. His grandchildren (and later great-grandchildren) delighted in him playing Santa, passing out gifts by the family Christmas tree. Grant's favourite place in the world was the cabin in Bay Bulls. With Olive and his family, including extended family, those were his happiest times. He was at home amongst the blueberry bushes, picking berries to be turned into sweet treats like figgy duff or given away to friends and family. He enjoyed fishing and rabbit catching. Nobody could match his skills to put a rabbit in the pot, which he hunted in Tors Cove or Freshwater Bay. And it tasted perfect when cooked (with pastry on top) by Olive.
Grant was a flea market king. He liked to get a bargain and to share his bargain with friends and relatives, whether it was surplus paint, a child's toy, or hardware from days gone by. It was as much about meeting people and making friends as it was about getting a deal. His ability to make a few dollars or cents was uncanny. Selling crafts made by Olive, Christmas trees, collector coins, and his handmade doll furniture all contributed to his income from paid employment at Harris & Hiscock, Kmart, Standard Manufacturing, and Stokes Building Supplies. Grant's family thanks the kind and caring professionals at the HSC - 4 South B for making his final days comfortable. Likewise, thank you to the good people at Ruby Manor and Alderwood Estates for their compassion and support over the last few years. It is much appreciated. Finally, thanks to all the people who came into Grant's life over the years and brought him their friendship and love. You contributed to the good life of a good man. Rest easy, Grant Cambridge Barnes. You earned it.

BENSON Anthony Wesley Reginald "Tony"
July 28, 1963 - March 5, 2020

Left with a lifetime of memories: his sister Deanna Houston; brother: Tolson (Annie), Chris and Dan (Jennie), niece Ruthie; nephews: Brad, Chase, Jamie, Chris and Andrew, plus many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Tony enjoyed watching the children grow up and babysitting with pride. His work family at David Day Law enjoyed his philosophical mind and extended many kindnesses and invitations to Tony, long after he was no longer able to work. Above all else, Tony helped care for our mother, living with Alzheimer's Disease. He showered her with love and compassion until the moment God relieved her of her pain. It's your turn to rest, brother. As per Tony's wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue. There will be no service at this time. BESSO William (Bill) Patrick
April 25, 1927 - March 14, 2020

Passed peacefully away on Saturday, March 14, 2020 in his 93rd year, Bill Besso, of Holyrood. Predeceased by his parents James and Helena (nee Davis); his brothers and sisters-in-law: Walter (Mame Taplin), Allan, Raymond (Lucie Marchant), James (Mary Maloney), Michael (Rita Joyal) and sisters: Rose Nelson and Mary House. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories; his cherished sister Loretta (Michael) Maloney of Holyrood and brother-in-law Charlie House of Stephenville Crossing, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, members of the Marina Golden Age Club, and several loyal and devoted friends.
Uncle Bill spent close to 50 years of his adult life working with Allied Aviation in Gander. When he wasn't working, he could be found on the Gander River salmon fishing - patiently waiting to catch the "big one." Upon his retirement, he returned to Holyrood, where he shared his love of salmon fishing with his nephews. Second, only to salmon fishing, was his passion and commitment to gardening. The seeds that were carefully sown inside during the winter months transformed his garden into a riot of color in the summer. His green thumb was the envy of many. His family will remember him for this and so much more. Uncle Bill was a man who loved life, and we loved him. He will be deeply missed. Resting at Dunphy's Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at 2:00 pm from Holy Cross Church, Holyrood with cremation to follow. Inurnment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Holy Cross Parish or a charity of one's choice. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Dunphy's Funeral Home. Please visit www.dunphys.ca to sign the memorial guest book.

CAHILL Adrian It is with great love and sadness that the family of Adrian Boniface Cahill, of Halifax, announce his passing on March 14th, 2020. Born July 3rd, 1933 to Michael and Mary (Rose) Cahill in St John's, Newfoundland, Adrian was beloved husband to Ruth (MacDonald) Cahill, father to his "Fab Four" children, "GDad" to his grandchildren, and to his delight, recently, "Great GDad". A proud Newfoundlander, Adrian was educated in St John's, graduating from St. Bonaventure's College in 1949. His expansive career commenced as Administrative Supervisor on the American Air Force Base, Fort Pepperell. Later, Adrian facilitated children's programs for the Newfoundland Department of Health. In 1960, he joined the National Employment Service, which took him and his family to Charlottetown, in 1967, and ultimately Halifax where he retired as Regional Manager of Employment at Employment and Immigration Canada in 1992. Married in 1958, Ruth and Adrian had four children, Jeannine, Anne, Susan, and Stephen. Upon moving to Halifax in 1968, their home quickly became the social hub. Certainly, Adrian would say, a full house and the cheer that came with it was the best, and when he was at his happiest. Music was constantly part of the festivities, and he had a deep love and talent for the craft, playing violin for the St. John's Orchestra, as well as piano and piano accordion through his life. Adrian was always a passionate supporter of his community, with a particular investment in the development of youth. He served as Newfoundland President, as well on the National Board of Directors, for the John Howard Society, and in Halifax on the Board of Trustees at the Grace Maternity Hospital Foundation from 1991 to 1994. He was incredibly dedicated and proud of his work with cadets, acting as the provincial secretary and treasurer of Cadet Services Canada in Newfoundland, as well as the Founding Commanding Officer of the Gonzaga Army Cadets in 1962; the Best First Year Gonzaga Cadet is awarded in his honour annually still. Adrian enjoyed sharing fond memories of summers spent as Camp Captain CD at Camp Aldershot in Kentville, NS from 1962 to 1966. In his youth, Adrian enjoyed sports including handball, track and field, and his other great love, "football". He served as soccer coach at Caledonia Jr. High in Dartmouth in 1978 and 1979 as well as a Board Member of the Dartmouth Hawks Soccer Club (now UDFC), Soccer Nova Scotia, and as the General Manager of Saint Mary's University Soccer from 1981 to 1985. During that time, he served as both a coach and manager for NS Provincial teams and, in 1981, as Manager for the NS Canada Games Team, an incredible experience he was able to share with Stephen, who was selected to play for the team. He returned as Mission Staff for the Canada Winter Games in 1983, and as Manager of the soccer team again in 1985. In 2019, Adrian was thrilled to become a supporter and Season Ticket Holder of the HFX Wanderers FC during their inaugural season. Always quick to recognize and acknowledge the best in people, Adrian was a gifted communicator with an unfathomable love for his family. To his children he was inspiring, encouraging, and always there to lend an ear, never judging when offering an anecdote and some sage wisdom. Anecdotes were often delivered with a pun; an endearing part of who he was and often the cause of much laughter, and the occasional groan! Adrian's life is now celebrated by his children, Jeannine (Robert) Vautour of Moncton, Anne (Gregory) Smith of Dartmouth, Susan Cahill of Dartmouth, and Stephen and his wife Kim (Mills) of Greenwich, CT. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Samuel Vautour (Caroline Karasuik), Emily Cainen (Jackson Munro), Claire Vautour (Bret Crawford), Gillian Smith, and Beth Cainen, as well as great-granddaughter Hazel Mai Crawford. He is lovingly remembered by his brother, Bernard (Mary) Cahill, nephew Michael (Nina) Cahill, nieces Yvonne Cahill, Denise Cahill (Trevor Bennett), Kathy (Sean) Fitzgerald, all of St John's, niece Michele (Jeff) Bennett of Calgary, AB; his Ottawa family, Jeanette and David Marett, Flora Neave, Geb Marett and Megan Pound, and Amy and Kevin Rule. He is missed by all of those who were blessed to know him, including Heather Smith Rigg, Laura and Evan Rigg, cousin Basil Rose, many other cousins, great nieces and nephews, and very dear friends. Adrian was predeceased by his parents, wife Ruth, brother Harold and his wife Rita Cahill, niece Sharon Cahill, Ruth's parents Thomas and Kathleen (Ellis) MacDonald, and brother-in-law John Neave. Interment has taken place. A memorial mass will be celebrated when it is possible for all family to attend. Should you wish to donate in his memory, Adrian would have appreciated your support of the IWK Children's Hospital for Women's and Newborn Health.

Crossing the Bar (Alfred Lord Tennyson) Sunset and evening star And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar

CULL Walter Aaron (Walt)
May 19, 1932 - February 27, 2020

Our Dad slipped away quietly, but unexpectedly, in his 88th year, leaving a huge hole in the fabric of our family. Dad grew up in Great Brehat, a tiny fishing outport on the northern tip of the Northern Peninsula. He grew up fishing the North Atlantic with his father and older brothers. But his mother wanted more for him that the vagaries of open boat fishing, and encouraged his education. So began his 43 career as an educator; teacher, high school principal, president of the former NTA, and Superintendent of Education for the Exploit's Valley School District. Dad was always proud of his upbringing, and always spoke highly of Great Brehat and the people who lived there.
Dad is survived by the love of his life, Helena. He is also survived by his daughters Paula Waterman (Clement George) and Deneen Cull (Corrie Davis); his sons Barry Cull (Barbara) and Dwayne Cull (Barbara); his six beautiful granddaughters Bonnie Vautour (Eric), Bethanne Stuckless (Tim), Darcy Cull, Jillian Waterman (Matthew Davis), Mallory Cull (John Eckert), and Claire Davis; and his four cherished great grandchildren Gweneth Stuckless, Gabriel Stuckless, Ophelia Vautour, and Roseanne Vautour; his sister Florrie Keats; four sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law, and spouse's; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Ronnie; his son-in-law Kevin Waterman; his parents Thomas and June Cull; his parents-in-law Hector and Mary Burden; his sisters Elizabeth Janes (Charles), Helen Anderson (Job), and Olive Simms (Jacob); brothers Roy, Cephas, and William Henry (Eunice); three very special brothers-in-law Ray Keats, Everett Osmond, and John (Jack) Parsons; sister-in-law Millie Burden and four nephews and three nieces.
Dad received his first university degree at the former Memorial University while supporting a wife and two children. He spent six summers completing his Master's degree at the University of Ottawa, with a wife and four children in tow. Dad rarely went far without Mom by his side or supporting him in some way, during a marriage of nearly 67 years. Mom and Dad have also travelled the world. Apart from many trips to "the mainland" and various parts of the USA, they have also visited South America, Europe, and Africa. But their greatest love was always the outdoors of our beautiful province. While we were growing up, we often went trout fishing, berry picking, and had picnics and "boil-ups".
Then Mom and Dad built an A-frame cabin at Western Arm on Notre Dame Bay in the early 1980's. Dad finally had a piece of his beloved salt water! Over the past 30 years we have had literally hundreds of family events there, including many birthday celebrations, a wedding, and too many games of cards to count, watching many hockey games, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Dad and Mom also had a hunting cabin near Buchan's for moose hunting and catching rabbits. Dad has received many awards and accolades during his life, from his career as an educator and his lifelong involvements as a Rotarian and with the United Church. But his greatest source of pride was always reserved for the achievements of his family. In his later years, he reveled in news about his grand/great grandchildren, constantly asking about them. Dad was also a voracious reader and was always knowledgeable about current affairs.
Donations in Dad's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Newfoundland or to a charity of one's choice would be graciously accepted. Visitation was held at Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on March 2, 2020. His funeral was held at Fraser Road United Church, Gander, at 2 pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Interment will be held at a later date at Botwood, NL. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Stacey's Funeral Home Gander/Carmanville and to leave a message of condolence please visit our website at: www.staceysfuneralhome.ca

Kevin passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Regina (Rossiter) Dalton, brother Wayne Dalton, mother-in-law Margaret Follett and brother-in-law Eddie Hackett. Leaving to mourn with broken hearts, his pillars of strength, his devoted wife of 28 years Arlene (Follett), his loving son Kyle, his brothers Perry (Wanda), Raymond (Anne), Neil (Lesa), his sisters Brenda Hackett, Michelle Jones (Darrell), Godmother Aunt Anne Zamolo, father-in-law John Follett, sisters-in-law Colleen Dalton (Albert), Charmaine Hookey (Chris), brothers-in-law Terry Follett (Anne) and Jim Follett, as well as all of his cousins, nieces and nephews and especially his five Godchildren. Also left to mourn is special friend Albert Lawlor and a large circle of family and friends. Kevin shared a truly special bond with his nephew Nicholas Dalton (Wayne's son). This bond will never be broken, not even through death. Kevin began his career with the Canadian Coast Guard. He loved his time at sea and often spoke fondly of it over the years. While still working with the Coast Guard he made his first investment in business in his hometown of Cape Broyle. Over the years his business interests grew to include a number of private investments, ESSO and Ultramar service stations, a Foodtown grocery store, and a Home Hardware Building Centre which his bother Neil later acquired. One of the highlights of Kevin's business ventures was Dalton's Casket Manufacturing which he started in 1991 and is still operating in Cape Broyle. Kevin touched the lives of many people over the years. Everyone knew Kevin was a very hard worker and that he also had a big heart. He was always busy - a man in constant motion - but never too busy to share his love of life with those around him. He was always there for his family and was very supportive of his community and all of the Southern Shore. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in caring for Kevin over the past year. To Unit 4 West and the ICU at St. Clare's for your care and compassion, the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre, NL Balance and Dizziness, SLP Private Practice, Bruce Halleran and the Health Sciences Centre, we sincerely thank you. A very special thank you to Mavis, Kevin's homecare worker from TLC, who cared for Kevin for the past six months. We are forever grateful for your kindness, compassion and professionalism. All of Kevin's brothers, sisters and in-laws played a large role in Kevin's wellbeing over the past year. Never has the importance of family been more evident than it has been during this time. A special thank-you to his sister Brenda. She worked at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for 35 years, and every day that she was available she spent by Kevin's side. Brenda laughed with us, cried with us, encouraged us, cooked meals, gave medical advice and helped in every way humanly possible to get us through these last 13 months. Brenda, your love and support will never be forgotten. Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of Kevin's life will take place at a date to be announced later. Donations in Kevin's memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
We frown because you are gone, but we smile because you have lived.

GOOBIE Gordon James October 17, 1940 - March 10, 2020 It is with deep sadness we share that our beloved father, Gordon, passed away suddenly at home in Mississauga, Ontario on March 10 2020 at 79 years. This sadly was the same day that our cherished mother, Elizabeth (nee Rafuse) passed 3 short years ago. Gordon is survived by his three devoted daughters, Lisa (Paul Ryce), Anji (Gord Jackson) and Gillian. Gord was born and raised in St. John's and is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Florence, brothers Robert (Rose) and Graham Goobie. Poppie was a very special grandfather and leaves behind his granddaughters, whom he was so very proud of: Rachel, Rebecca, Paige & Ava Ryce and Tiffany (Matthew Zavaglia). He was a beloved big brother to Ed (Shirley), Dave and Jeanette(Wade Janes) and many nieces and nephews, most still residing in his beloved Newfoundland. Gord also leaves behind sister in laws Susan (Sutherland), Kathy (Rafuse) and cherished nieces and nephews and their families. With little more than a few bucks in his pocket, Dad left Newfoundland for the "mainland" and was a lifelong employee of RBC, transferring from Antigonish, Halifax, St. John's, Montreal and finally Mississauga where he retired after 40 years. Dad's passions were hockey and golf and although he hung up his Mississauga Oldtimer skates a few years ago, he still continued to enjoy a game of golf or coffee-chats with his dear Millcroft buddies. Dad was always there, quietly supporting his community through volunteering or coaching his daughters in basketball, soccer and softball. He was a proud and supportive Poppie, watching his granddaughters play basketball, dance, golf and hockey. Dad was a wonderful, caring, supportive father, husband, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, neighbour and friend and we are sad to let you go. Cremation has taken place. Please visit the Glen Oaks Funeral Home website for more information once the timing is appropriate for a memorial. www.glenoaks.ca

MANUEL James Christopher October 7, 1939 - March 24, 2020 It is with great sadness that the family of James (Jim) Manuel, of Oakville, ON announce the loss of this great man. Jim was born to Raymond & Dorothy Manuel in Campbellton, NL. He will be forever remembered by the way he made people feel and the integrity with which he approached life. He was gifted with the skilled hands of a magician that could fix anything, the brain of an engineer that could build anything, the heart of a saint who saw the good in everyone and everything. Jim was well read, an avid sailor, dog lover (especially of Bonzo and Rambo), and a respected man who was supportive of the people around him and his community. Jim is survived by his sweetheart Yordie Dawn (Prosper) his beloved companion of 23 years, and a vast extended family and friends: Cate Carruthers, Michael Carruthers, Laurie Carroll-Carruthers, Jo-Ann Prosper, Dennis Keough, Sadie Keough, Louis Keough, Ben Douglas and so many others, too numerous to name. Jim had a long successful productive career. Thank you to Dr. Fasano and team, Toronto Western Hospital Unit 5B, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the staff at The Post Inn for their exceptional care. MARTIN David Passed away peacefully at St. Clare's on March 23, 2020 at the age of 79. Predeceased by his wife Anna, sister Jacqueline Whittle, brother Stuart, and parents George and Barbara. Left with so many lovely memories are daughters Hilary and Jennifer (Bill Drover), grandsons Michael and Mark, brother Cabot (Deidre McLoughlin), as well as a large group of family and friends. Dave grew up in Channel-Port aux Basques. As the son of an Anglican minister, the value of hard work and education was instilled early. In his teens, he joined Cadets and then the ROTC, spending many summers working at military bases across Canada. He graduated from Memorial University and became a high school teacher, first teaching in Port aux Basques and then in St. John's. It was at Bishop's College that he met fellow teacher and love of his life Anna Cameron. They married in December 1964, and moved to Corner Brook, where they both taught. Dave worked as a labourer in the paper mill in the summers to save enough money for law school at Dalhousie University. Halifax was such an adventure for them, the place where they met so many life-long friends. They returned to St. John's, and Dave was a founding partner of the law firm Martin, Whalen, Hennebury and Stamp. As a lawyer, he was noted for his mediation skills, bringing disputes to a resolution with his patient manner. But he was better known to his family and friends as a storyteller, fisherman and guitar player. He took his beloved Martin guitar on many adventures "up in the woods" with Boyd and Chuck, Fred, Dave Morgan and so many others. Many will remember him in his red Toyota truck that he drove through most of the 1980s, aluminum boat tied to the top, always ready for a trip on the water. There were songs and stories where ever he went, and that is what we will miss most. Like many people, Dad struggled with depression in his later years. Thank you to all the staff of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Waterford Hospital for their unending support - Dr. Truskolaski, Chris, Melissa, Tom, Donna, Katie, Jamie and so many others who give so much to help those who are so vulnerable. Cremation has taken place. Due to the current Public Health Advisory of COVID-19, no gathering will be held at this time; we invite people to share their condolences, stories, and photos through www.barretts.ca   A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Donations in Dave's memory may be made to the David Suzuki Foundation (davidsuzuki.org/take-action/) or a charity of your choice. Please email rememberingdavid2020@gmail.com to stay in touch for the announcement of the celebration of life, or to send a donation card.

MOORE ORR Dr. Robin Denise Sc.D, MSc. (Harvard University); S.M. (Iowa State University) Registered Dietician; Associate Professor, Memorial University of Newfoundland; Fulbright Scholar; Recipient of the Queen's Jubilee Medal, 2004. Robin, age 86, of Halifax, Nova Scotia died after a tragic fall on March 22, 2020. She was born in Sydney, Australia, the daughter of Edward and Myra Moore; predeceased by her only brother, Bill Moore. Survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Dr. James C. Orr, and her children, Andrew (Bianca Lang) and Fiona, and her grandchildren, Ian, Cameron and Kellis Malcolm, and Benno and Sophie Orr. Robin left Australia at the tender age of 23 to pursue a master's degree in public health and nutrition at Iowa State University. There she met the love of her life, Jim, a post-doctoral fellow in chemistry from Scotland; together they embarked upon a life-long journey of academics and travel. Starting first in Mexico City, they then moved to Boston, where Robin received masters and doctoral degrees from the Harvard School of Public Health, all while raising two children. She spent the bulk of her professional life in St. John's, NL where she and Jim were professors at the Faculty of Medicine. After retiring to Ottawa, Jim and Robin then moved to Halifax to be closer to family. Robin was the President of the Canadian Institute of Child Health for many years and, in addition to numerous other awards, was honoured by the Canadian Public Health Association for her lifetime of outstanding service to the promotion of public health in Canada. Brilliant, beautiful, articulate and trailblazing, Robin was a tremendous role model as a working mother, professional, public health policy professor and academic. She adored Bach and a proper British brass band with equal passion; her ability to light up a room was unparalleled. Robin especially treasured summers at the family cottage, Ladyslipper, by the lake in Sebago, Maine, enjoying her porch and tending her garden. Fiercely competitive, she enjoyed a rousing card game of Sandbar with her family collected around the dining room table, always frustrated that chance more than calculation was likely to determine its outcome. Due to current circumstances, no funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the children's charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at: www. Jasnowfuneralhome.com

PAYNE Jean
(May 12, 1939 - March 4, 2020)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Payne (Croft), former Member of Parliament, following a lengthy illness. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband, David Payne; parents George and Mary (Morris); treasured brother George; infant siblings Marion and Francis; and brother-in-law Mick Dalton. She leaves behind her cherished sisters Eleanor Powell (Sandy) of Greenfield, NS; Madonna Dalton of Cape Broyle, NL; and Esther Barrett (Richard) of St. John's, NL; dear sister-in-law Margaret Croft of Aquaforte, NL; many nieces and nephews, whom she considered her own children; a large group of great nieces, great nephews and cousins; and a large circle of friends. Jean was born Mary Genevieve Croft in Aquaforte, NL, the second oldest child of George and Mary. It was while growing up in Aquaforte that Jean met the love of her life, David, and they were inseparable partners for more than fifty years until David's death in 2013.
From childhood Jean was intelligent, ambitious and determined -traits that shaped her life to the very end. She excelled in school, graduating at fifteen and setting off into the world. Early in her career she and David moved to Toronto where she entered the field of marketing and public relations. After a few short years Jean and David, both passionate Newfoundlanders, felt the pull of home and returned to Newfoundland, where Jean embarked on a career as a serial entrepreneur and David returned to his calling as a fisherman. In the ensuing years Jean founded several successful businesses in the fields of personnel services, executive search and legal support services. Jean was a passionate advocate for what was important to her, and this passion was the catalyst for her entry into politics. As the spouse of a lifelong fisherman and fisherman's union representative, Jean was committed to supporting the fishing industry and the people of rural Newfoundland who depended on that industry. She was deeply affected by the 1992 closure of the inshore fishing industry. The following year, Jean ran as a Liberal and was elected as Member of Parliament for St. John's West, the riding that included many fishing communities including her home community on the Southern Shore. Jean held this position until 1997, following which she returned to private business.
Jean was a force to be reckoned with. She was a trailblazer in business and politics, never daunted by the barriers facing women of her time. Her strength of will and her indomitable spirit made her a fierce adversary -and just as fierce a friend. Jean was a loving and generous sister, sister in law, aunt, great aunt, friend. She gave us enthusiastic support in our times of joy, and tireless assistance in times of need.
Visitation will be held at Caul's Funeral Home in St. John's on Thursday, March 5, 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm; and at Fahey's Funeral Home in Fermeuse on Friday, March 6, 2-5pm and 7-9 pm. Flowers are gratefully accepted, or in lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Cancer Society of Newfoundland.

RYALL Gladys Elizabeth (nee Dinn)
During a glorious sunrise on the morning of March 9, 2020, in her 92nd year on this earth, Mom was lifted by the angels to be with her Lord and Saviour, and to reunite once again with all those who have gone before her. Gladys was a devout Catholic, and was firm in her belief of everlasting life. Gladys was born on January 9, 1928 in St. John's Newfoundland, to Leo Joseph Dinn and Millicent Aphra (nee Vere Holloway). She was predeceased by her parents, husband Frank, son Nick, sisters Joan and Ruth, brothers James and Leo, sons-in-law Robert Power and Scott Murphy.
Gladys spent her working life at home as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her very large family. Her exceptional mothering skills were not limited to her own family, as she was known as a second-mom to many kids in the neighbourhood. There was always an extra kid at the dining room table, but who could tell with a family this large? Her compassionate heart was also shown to injured animals we would carry home for her to nurse back to life. She was a miraculous homemaker who could cook, clean, sew, and constantly renovate the home with new paint and wallpaper. Mom taught us many life lessons, and raised her children to be compassionate, honest, tolerant, and kind. While she will be dearly missed, her legacy lives beyond.
She is survived by her children Lorraine (Laurie), Nick's wife Susan, Gail, Valerie (Les), Francis, Debbie (Foster), Noel (Joan), Lori (Mike), Mary (Karl), Mercedes, Sam, Michele, Jackie (Rod), Leo (Cherie), David, Doug (Cathy), Sean (Danielle), and Tracey (Darren), in addition to 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of Northwood Ivany Place for taking such gentle care of our Mom, (in particular Leslie, Prince, Melanie, Jordan and Joann); sister-in-law Susan for making sure Mom's hands were always beautifully manicured; and sister-in-law Cathy for managing foot care, and for gently guiding the family through the Vigil. You have our heartfelt thanks.
Funeral Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. The family is following current Nova Scotia Department of Health guidelines with regards to COVID-19, and as such there will be no public visitation. Funeral mass will be for family members only. SHARPE Ruby Marie June 30, 1952 - March 21, 2020 Passed peacefully away in Halifax on March 21, 2020 in a warm embrace and loving arms with her heart filled with the deep love of her family and friends. Predeceased by her dear father Edward Sharpe and her brother Kevin and sister Debbie. Leaving to mourn her unspeakable loss, her Carol (Byrne), her loving mother Carmel Sharpe; siblings Ted, Diane (Bernie Carrigan), Judy (David Gook), Shirley (Vincent Howard), Maxine, John (Jackie), Jean Ann (Gary Ryan), Stephen (Pamela) and Andrew (Nola); nieces and nephews Christine (Scott Davis) and Ron Carrigan, Mark and Jason Howard, Renee Sharpe, Matthew (Stacey) and Vincent Sharpe, Emily and Liam Ryan, Justin and Colin Sharpe, Jack and Grace Sharpe and great niece and nephew Brody and Sophie, the Byrne family and her dear friends/sisters of the Catholic Women's League. Ruby grew up on Topsail Road (Donavan's). Family remained the focal point of Ruby's life. She so loved her family and took so much pride in each of them. Upon meeting her, chances are one walked away with a story of her Mom or Carol or one of her sisters and brothers. She loved them and they were part of her every thought and conversation. To the end, she fought to protect them, never wanting them to be worried or burdened. Ruby was a trailblazer and an instigator even at a very early age - from her ripping her tights climbing the tallest trees and filling her best Sunday hat with chestnuts, to countless hours at the Stadium rollerskating and later, driving her motorcycle through places that will remain unnamed. She loved music and dancing and would quickly scan any room to determine who was around to do the jive with. In adulthood and retirement, she found so much enjoyment in her garden where she spent countless hours awaiting every blossom, traveling, always wanting to experience more of this world, and her Thursday morning art class. Never to be forgotten, her little canine companion Tobie (her shadow) who though gone for several years, filled her heart with such joy and love and she talked of him constantly. In her final hours, she was comforted by videos of him. In her professional life, Ruby devoted her career to working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Always the advocate, she played a significant role in deinstitutionalization efforts in this province and had been part of the closure of Exon House and the Right Futures Project. She truly believed in supporting individuals in the community and she made it seemed so simple for many of her coworkers as she mentored them and taught them to look at life through the eyes of the individual. No matter how great the challenge, Ruby could be heard saying "they're a pussy cat" as she found the love and kindness in everyone. Throughout it all, Ruby stayed strong in her faith and served her church with vigor and determination. She prayed for everyone and one could be certain that if you were ill or facing difficult times, Ruby had you on "her list", a list that grew exponentially but that she remained faithful to. She so loved the Catholic Women's League of which she was part of for years and took much pride in becoming a Life Member in 2019. She loved the League and the many ways that she was able to use that forum to reach out to those in need. She never gave up on them and even in her final days from her hospital bed, she was doing emails working to coordinate matters and ensure things were taken care off. Ruby was loved by her huge extended family and by all who had the great fortune to meet her and we will all miss her dearly. We search for ways to fill the tremendous void in our lives left by her passing but as she would have insisted on, we must find a way to seek comfort in a life so well lived and the love that she left with each one of us. Cremation has taken place and in light of the current health advisories, service arrangements and a celebration of Ruby's life will be announced at a later date where we will come together to honor her beautiful life. She continues to push us to overcome the obstacles. In Ruby's memory, donations may be made to a charity of your choice as she would continue to want to help as many and as diverse a group as possible or simply reach out to do something nice for someone, especially in these difficult times that we face. SHEPPARD GEORGE F.
It is with great sadness that the family of the late George Freeman Sheppard announce his passing on February 17, 2020 at the Labrador Grenfell Health Long Term Care Facility in Happy Valley-Goose Bay; he was ninety-one years old. George will be lovingly missed by his daughters Georgina Sheppard of Halifax, NS, Christina Sheppard of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL, and son Gary Sheppard (Debbie) of Marysville, ON; three grandchildren Shelly Reddy (Ben Beringer) of Edmonton, AB, twins Freeman and Elliott Sheppard of Marysville, ON, and brothers Charlie Sheppard (Rebecca), Thomas Sheppard (Theresa), and sisters Nellie Chaulk (Lewis), Gwen Montague (Steward - deceased) and Dorothy McGrath (Peter - deceased). George was born March 6, 1928 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland to parents Eugene and Winnifred Sheppard (Fitzgerald). George was the eldest of 7 children. He secured a job with Imperial Oil in Gander in 1950 and was sent to the USAF station in Goose Bay as a supervisor. This is where he met his sweetheart Doris Goguen. They were married in 1953 and made Happy Valley their lifetime home. With his wife he raised five children. Sadly, two sons predeceased him: Robert John at age fourteen and Larry Thomas at age twenty-two. Labrador was home to George for sixty-eight years. He loved 'The Big Land' and enjoyed the lifestyle the great outdoors offered. He lived life to the fullest spending time at their cabins in Mud Lake and Terrington Basin as well as sharing many boating, skidooing, and camping adventures with family and friends. Throughout George's lifetime he supported his family and community. He had a reputation for helping his extended family and making them all feel special.
George was a distinguished business pioneer of Labrador. His entrepreneurial success was evident in numerous businesses; most notably was Sheppard's Laundry and Dry Cleaners and The Royal Inn. Sheppard's Laundry & Dry Cleaners was established in 1961 and sold in 2014 - one of the longest running businesses in the community; In 1968 he built a 12 unit apartment building catering to the demands of the US military base. In later years when demands changed, the apartment building was converted to a hotel - The Royal Inn; eventually becoming the Royal Inn and Suites with 37 units, operated by his daughter Christina Sheppard, the only hotel in Happy Valley. In 1990 George built a state-of-the-art dry cleaning plant and retired from business in 1991. George held numerous leadership roles within the community. He was a lifetime brother of the Masonic Temple Lodge No. 17 and served as Worshipful Master in 1966. He was a chartered member of the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce and served as past President. He was past President of the Labrador North Liberal Association, and past President of the Anglican-Moravian Parents Teachers Association, as well as other committee and board memberships. The funeral service took place at St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Happy Valley on February 23, 2020. The family would like to thank Rev. Nellie Thomas, the Masonic Brotherhood, and the Royal Canadian Legion. A special thank you to Dr. Law and the staff at the Long Term Care Facility who took wonderful care of George for six years. Donations to St. Andrew's Anglican Church would be graciously accepted to support the Anglican Church Renovation Fund.

STURGE Virginia Susan (nee Gatehouse) We are profoundly saddened to share the sudden passing of Virginia Susan Sturge (nee Gatehouse) on March 23, 2020 at the age of 63. Virginia is lovingly remembered by her mother June Wilkinson (nee Parsons) (nee Gatehouse), husband Gerald Sturge, daughters Heidi Rideout (Tristan), Becky Sturge, Olivia Sturge, Emily Sturge (Sander), brothers Kenneth Gatehouse (Michele) and Herbert Gatehouse (Nicole), and grandson Ethan Harold Rideout. She married Ger, the love of her life, on April 21, 1979 in St. Augustine's Anglican church. Virginia's life revolved around her family and friends. For years, she volunteered as a Girl Guide leader and loved to host all of her daughters' friends at her large dining room table in Mount Pearl, where she was considered by many as their "second mother." Virginia was very close to her grandmother Lilian Parsons and brother Ken. She shared a special relationship with Harold, whom we know has welcomed her into heaven with a warm hug. Virginia also enjoyed taking the girls camping at Butterpot Park, and built special traditions between her Mom and her daughters, centered around family holidays like Christmas and Easter, in their shared home for more than 20 years. Virginia loved her family dearly and will be with them in spirit forever. We are all in mourning for our wonderful daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, cousin and special friend. The stars will shine brighter in the evening sky now that Virginia has joined them. An extended obituary can be found online at Barrett's Funeral Home, St. John's.
