BARRETT, Alma - Passed peacefully away Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Dr. A.A. Wilkinson Memorial Health Centre in Old Perlican at the age of 93. She is survived by her son, George and his wife Juanita; two grandchildren and spouses Lisa (Ian) and Mandie (Lee); sister Jessie (Dave); sister-in-law Marjorie and many close family and friends. BATT, Robert Gordon - Passed away suddenly at his home in Vancouver, BC, on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, Robert Gordon Batt, aged 64 years. Robert grew up in Montreal where he developed his deep love of music, attaining his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from McGill University and a PhD in musicology at the UBC School of Music. Aside from his accomplished career in music his greatest achievement is in the number of students he imbued with his own love of and excellence in music. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed the great wide wilderness, hiking, camping and fighting off bears when the occasion arose. Angus Blackwood, beloved husband of Mary, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2016 at the age of 78 years. Gus was the first born of twelve children and lived in Brookfield, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, until the age of 17 when he joined the Canadian Armed Forces. For thirty-five years he worked and traveled abroad and across Canada to support and raise his family. His heart has always been back at home in Newfoundland. BYRNE, James - (August 1, 1945 - March 9, 2016) - James Michael Byrne, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away at home in Vancouver on March 9, 2016, at the age of 70. Jim will be dearly missed by Rachel, his wife and companion of almost 50 years, by his son David, by his brothers, sisters and large extended family in Newfoundland and across the country, and by his friends and colleagues from over 45 years in Vancouver. Jim was born in Torbay (Newfoundland) on August 1, 1945, as the second child and eldest son of Alex and Violet Byrne. In his early twenties, Jim headed to Toronto, where he met Rachel. The couple married and soon moved to Vancouver, where Jim and Rachel raised a family and enjoyed many happy years together. Jim loved his work of 46 years as a salesman and manager at Gandy's Hardware in Kitsilano. From the days of the hippies until 2014, Jim was a true fixture on Fourth Avenue, known by thousands over the years as the go-to man for everything hardware and household. At home, Jim loved watching sports and British TV shows, relaxing with his dogs and cats, and working in the backyard. He was a quiet, humble and kind man who deeply loved his family. We will miss him intensely, but recognize that he is at peace and on to a better life. As requested by Jim's family, there will be a private memorial service in the future. COXON (VALE), Muriel Winifred - Passed away peacefully in her 93rd year on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, Muriel Winifred Coxon (Vale). Left with fond and loving memories are son James (Joann), stepdaughter Sheila (Walter), grandchildren Janet, Ian and Michael and great-grandchild Gavin. Predeceased by her parents, Gladys and Victor Vale, sisters Dora and Ruth and husband Melville Coxon, she will be fondly remembered by sister-in-law Mary as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and friends throughout Canada and Great Britain. The Depression, World War 2 and subsequent British austerity shaped her early years. Desiring change, this articulate and reserved lady came to Newfoundland as a nurse and midwife in April 1956. Leaving the spring greenery of England to come via sea to Newfoundland in April caused her great homesickness, but she often commented on her amazement with the countryside's' complete transformation from brown to green by June. Even after 60 years in her adopted home, Newfoundland, her heart truly remained in England. Actively involved with many organizations in the 60's and 70's she was a staunch advocate for education and learning. She was, to the end, a passionate gardener, birder, reader, lover of classical music, broad conversation and laughter and thoroughly enjoyed the people populating this grand place. She was a distinctly unique person and will be sorely missed by all whom she touched. She loved life. To quote one of her favourite poets, William Wordsworth; "The music in my heart I bore long after it was heard no more." CRITCH, James Albert - Passed peacefully away at the palliative care unit of the Leonard Miller Centre, with his family by his side on March 30, 2016, aged 81. Jimmy to all who knew him, he spent his life helping others, especially with keeping everything in good working order. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff on the 4th floor at Tiffany Village who went above and beyond to care for dad. In a short time, they became family. He will be sadly missed by his many friends at Golden Arm Campground, as well as the Royal Canadian Legion, where he was a life-time member, past president and an avid volunteer for the Poppy Fund. ENNIS, William "Bill" Brendan - Passed peacefully away at the Veterans Wing at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, ON on March 29, 2016. Bill was born at home at 28 Hamilton Street in St. John's Newfoundland on May 15, 1918 and named for his paternal grandfather. He was a graduate of Holy Cross School. Bill was predeceased by his parents William Francis Ennis and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ennis (nee Kerrivan), his eldest son Paul, his grandson Ryan and his siblings Ronald "Ron," George, Mary, Margaret "Marg," Kathleen "Kay" Walsh and Charles "Charlie." Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife of 67 years Mary Ennis (nee Martin), his children Bill (Susan), Brian (Christine), George (Bradley), Mary Prete (Michael), Fabian (Kathleen), Barbara, his daughter-in-law Mary plus 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered by many nephews and nieces. Bill was the last surviving Ennis who lived and fished for a living at Freshwater Bay just outside St. John's. The Ennis family had been present in Freshwater Bay for over 120 years. As a proud Newfoundlander, Bill at the age of 22 answered the call of his country in 1940 and enlisted with the 166th Newfoundland Regiment. He sever over five years of which two and one half were spent in action in Tunisia in North Africa to Italy. The Newfoundland Regiment participated in some of the bloodiest engagements between German and Allied forces (Longstop Hill, Ortona and Monte Cassino). Many of the friends Bill had known since childhood died on battlefields in Africa and Italy. He married Mary Martin on February 23, 1949 at the Oratory of the Convent of Mercy in St. John's. Bill and Mary were determined to be married as Newfoundlanders. Bill and Mary moved to Montreal in 1959 and then onto Toronto in 1960. Bill's love of camping and travel took him to many places in the United States, Israel, Italy and countries in South America and the Caribbean. The trip to Italy afforded Bill (then in his 80s) the opportunity to revisit the battlefields where the Newfoundland Regiment had fought and mourn his fallen comrades. A visitation was held at Turner & Porter, Neweduk Chapel, 1981 Dundas Street West, Mississauga, ON. L5K 1R2 on Thursday, Mary 31, 2016. A funeral service will be held at Merciful Redeemer Church, 2775 Erin Centre Blvd., Mississauga on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 2 pm. FEWER, Edward John - Passed peacefully away on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the St. John's Long Term Care Facility after suffering several years with Dementia; Edward John Fewer, 85 years of age. A gentle, kind, loving heart stopped beating 12:07, March 22, 2016. It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our dear mom. She slipped away at Placentia Health Centre in the presence of her loving daughter. She is predeceased by her husband Nick, son Gary, parents Cornelius and Adelaide Parsons, and friend Mike Critch. FREAKE, Bertram Geoffrey - 83, New Minas, NS, died peacefully March 17, 2016 at home with his family. He was born in Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island, NL in 1933, a son of the late James and Elsie Freake. He is survived by his wife Joan, children Ian and Ingrid, grandchildren Patrick and Lauren and his brother Arthur. He was predeceased by his brothers Charles, Jabez, and Harvey. He graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland, with a B.A., and subsequently a B.Ed. Over his 34 year teaching career he taught at various schools throughout Newfoundland including Woody Island, Portugal Cove, Glenwood, Botwood, Bishop Falls and Lewisporte, retiring in 1986. He moved to Nova Scotia in 1996 to be near family, returning to Newfoundland, and particularly Fogo Island, each summer. A private family burial will take place in Newfoundland at a later date. FURLONG, Rose - (January 11th, 1922 - March 14th, 2016) - With thanks and appreciation for a long and productive life, the family announces the passing of our precious mother, Rose Furlong (Byrne), aged 94 years, in the early hours of March 14th, 2016. She died from the complications of Alzheimer's which, in recent years, erased her of her life story one memory at a time. GILLARD, Reginald Rexworth (Rex) - We are saddened by the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in 1922, Rex passed away on March 23rd, 2016, Rex was the last surviving child of Dorman Gillard and Monica Flynn (Corner Brook). He left home at a young age to sail with the Merchant Marine and later with the Royal Navy Rescue Tug Service during WWII. Wounded on D-Day, he returned to Newfoundland at the end of the war and married Ethel Smith who predeceased him in 2012. He leaves behind his children Paul (Gayle), Paula (Roger), Glenn (Gayna) and Glenda (Keith); his grandchildren Geoffrey (Barb), Sarah (Neil), Gerald (Tanya), Andrew (Christine), Philip (Shannon), Matthew and David; and his great-grandchildren Aidan, Ryan, Megan, Seán, Finn, Olivier, Raphaëlle, Ella, Alexa and Sophia. He left today for a journey who knows where. We only hope that there's a salmon river there. GIOVANNINI (nee Fitzpatrick), Rita Mary - Rita Mary Giovannini (nee Fitzpatrick), 91, passed peacefully away on March 3, 2016 surrounded by her large and devoted family and blessed by her many friends and caregivers at St. Patrick's Mercy Home. Rita was predeceased by her parents, Susan and James Fitzpatrick of Lord's Cove, her sisters Elizabeth, Josephine, Viola and Sarah and her brothers Joseph and Adolph. Left to celebrate her life are husband Leo (Bud) and their 10 children: Dolores Kean (Baxter); Jim (Turid); Sue; Bob (Alana); Brian; Patti (Michael Holmes); Joy Piepjohn (Manfred); Paula (Andy Newman); Karen and Kathy. Rita leaves 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren - who brought great joy to her later years. Rita was especially close with her nephew John Isaacs and her in-laws Mary Jackman, Margaret and Vincent McDonald, Theresa Giovannini and Edward Kold. And to the end she enjoyed regular visits from her many nieces and nephews. Rita was born in Lord's Cove, lived most of her life in St. Lawrence and spent her later years in St. John's. She will be remembered for her remarkable wit, her humorous stories, and her integrity as a person. She spoke the truth and she faced life head on, always with a sense of humour. She was a tireless worker and a highly competent manager - of her local parish in her early days as the priest's assistant, of her family of 10, and the hotel and bar business she built with her husband Bud. All the while she served leadership roles in the local church and hospital auxiliary and the provincial lounge and tourism associations. Rita was well respected by all who knew her - family, friends, employees, business associates and community members. Rita was also an excellent cook who fed thousands of visitors to St. Lawrence and catered hundreds of weddings and banquets. GROUCHEY, James (Jimmy) Austin - Passed away at home in Goodyear, Arizona. He was born on June 24, 1969 in St. John's, NL, Canada, the son of James (Sr.) and Ruth (Sheppard) Grouchey. Jimmy is survived by his parents, his sister Christina Dewar (Kelly); his brother David (Michelle), and his sister Jennifer; as well as his adoring nephews Benjamin, Charlie, and Maxum. Jimmy received his Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland, after which time he moved to the United States. While residing in Louisiana he completed his Masters Degree at the University of New Orleans and held positions teaching Sociology and in statistical analysis. In 2009, Jimmy took on another challenge and completed both the Associate in Science (Health) Degree from Mount Olive College and Diploma in Nursing from the Watts School in North Carolina. Upon graduation he held nursing positions in both NC and AZ. Jimmy was a loving free spirit. He had a passion for music, especially live concerts, and enjoyed an extensive history of live sports and music events. His personality was larger than life matched only by his beautiful smile, booming laugh, and loving heart. Most of all, the time Jimmy spent with his immediate family, uncles, aunts, cousins, and countless friends brought the greatest joy to his life. He truly was a rare and special gift to our world, and will be profoundly missed. GULLIVER, Ira Cecil - (September 19th, 1940 - March 28th, 2016) - Passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Monday March 28th, 2016, Ira Gulliver, of Dildo, aged 75 years. Predeceased by parents; James and Leah Gulliver, brothers; Jack, Fred, and Reg, and sisters, Dorothy Sally, Bernice Blackmore, and Jean Summers. HUNT, Leonard Frank "Len" - Age 87 years of St. John's, passed peacefully away on March 15th, 2016 at Chancellor Park with his family at his side. Predeceased by parents, Harry and Elizabeth Hunt; sisters, Kathleen (Ian), Nance (Bert) and Grace; son-in-law Pastor Ross Sacrey; sister-in-law Ella. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 64 years, Phyllis (Coultas); his children: Tony (Neena), Heather Mercer (Gerald), Elizabeth Garcia (Davie) and Terry (Mary); 8 grandchildren: Tim, Wendy, Sarina, Angela, Shawn, Kelly, Jacob and Nathan; 8 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Sophie Corcoran (Bill) and Ella Ortiz (Jose); his special furry companion Tippy; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Len moved his family from St. John's to Baie Verte in 1963. During his 26 years in Baie Verte, Len was very active in community service. He was Commanding Officer of the R.C.S.C.C. Grenfell Sea Cadet Corp for 8 years, president of C.I.M. (Canadian Institute of Mining, Baie Verte Section) for 8 years, president of the Lions Club 1967-68, vice president of the Green Bay School Board, president of the Rattling Brook Curling Club for 15 years, executive member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54, a member of the Anglican Church Choir as well as being director of several other Community Service activities. Len and his wife Phyllis retired to St. John's on June 30th, 1989. On November 4th, 1989 he was presented with an honorary membership in the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, NL branch. Len and Phyllis started a cottage on Salmonier Line 10 years prior to retiring. When they retired to St. John's they spent many enjoyable days relaxing with their new friends and neighbours who will miss him very much. Special thank you to the staff of Chancellor Park, especially Dr. Percy Crocker and his long term physician Dr. Andrew Hutton. Cremation has taken place. She volunteered extensively and was an integral part of the Janeway Hospital Auxiliary for 40 plus years. Even in her later years and up until the time of her death she was participating in a number of volunteer activities. She lived an amazing 99 years and was an inspiration to growing old. She never thought of herself as old and always said she never worried about aging as she was too busy living. O'LEARY (nee Horwood), Barbara - Baddeck, NS - It is with profound sorrow that the family of Barbara Annette O'Leary (nee Horwood) announce her passing with peace and dignity, at home in Baddeck, Nova Scotia on March 8, 2016, after a determined battle with pancreatic cancer. Barbara was born in St. John's Newfoundland on July 31, 1944, the eldest child of the late Lloyd and Edna (Gover) Horwood. Predeceased by her brother Leslie. Left to celebrate her life are her husband of 50 years, Joe; daughters, Sandra (Ernest "chief cook"), Joanne (Glenn), Valerie (Brent), Kathy (Bruce) and son, Terence; brothers, Doug (Lois), Dave, Bob (Phyllis), all in Newfoundland, Gary in British Columbia; and her only sister, Janet (Bren), in the Yukon. She was especially proud of her grandchildren, Brad, Justin, Matthew, Monica, Morgan, Jackson and great-granddaughter, Maya. She will be remembered by her many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends across Canada and elsewhere, as well as her longtime friend Sherry. Barbara enjoyed selling real estate and taking vacations in Florida. From 1992-2003, she and Joe also operated the IGA/Freshmart in Baddeck. Barbara had a passion for decorating and got her inspiration from her natural ability to choose all the right colours and furnishings, as well as HGTV and other home decorating related programs. She loved playing cards 120's, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and also enjoyed searching for her forever puppy right up until her illness cut this endeavour short. Barbara was a long-standing member of the Baddeck Royal Canadian Legion Branch #53. The family wishes to thank the nurses and Homecare, who visited her daily providing outstanding care second to none, the nurses and staff at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Dr. Chow and her family physician Dr. Roland Genge for his visits, both at the hospital and at her home, showing genuine concern for her well being. Also, thanks to Father Paul Abbass, Deacon Walter Ivany, and Dr. John Ritter and the palliative care nurses who visited her at the hospital and many times at home, providing unparalleled care for Barbara and consolation for the family in this time of sorrow. A special thank you to daughters, Sandra and Joanne who have been providing loving care and attention 24/7 since early January, with their help and devotion we were able to take Barbara home from hospital on February 4th. Gerry's life was dedicated to nurturing his family, his church community (Bethesda), his business (Mitchell Agencies), his garden, and his golf swing. A natural salesman who relished the challenge of a reticent customer, Gerry grew Mitchell Agencies from a small wholesaler to an Atlantic Canadian food brokerage company before handing it over to the next generation and settling into semi-retirement and life as a snowbird. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers who took care of Gerry as his health declined (particularly Amie, Kim, Madonna and Dr. Percy Crocker), and to the many friends who supported his family through this difficult time. PATEY, Cecil Valentine - (March 29th, 1943 - May 21st, 2016) - Father, grandfather, husband, son, brother, uncle, teacher, writer, and preacher - Cecil filled many roles in a life lived throughout Canada and the world, but most of all, he was a man who loved deeply. On the early morning of March 21st 2016, Cecil Valentine Patey passed away at Windsor Regional Hospital in the company of family in Ontario, Canada. Survived by wife Lilian and four sons: Andrew (wife Cathy, son Ryan, daughters Lauren and Lana) in Connecticut; Paul (wife Michelle, daughter Ava and son Jonah) in Windsor, ON; Timothy in Switzerland; and Luke (wife Thea and sons Victor and Gregory) in Denmark. Cecil was a son of Salvation Army Officers Cecil and Effie Patey. He is survived by two brothers: Philip and Paul (Shirley), and four sisters: Emily Remartinez (Felix), and Catherine, Faith and Nina, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Cecil grew up in rural Newfoundland, studied at Memorial University, and later at other universities. He spent most of his life elsewhere in Canada but also lived four years in California and two years in Jerusalem. For years he was a Christian church minister. He maintained a life-long, scholarly interest in the early history of the Christian church. Cecil was also a writer and historian of early Christian history, philosophy, and tradition. He authored two books on these subjects, and received three Master's degrees for his studies and work in these areas: M.Div. in Theology (Fuller Theological Seminary, 1968), M.A. in Religious Studies (U. Ottawa, 1977) and M.Div. in Theology (U. Toronto, 1999). Memorial service was conducted in Windsor ON on March 26, 2016. Cecil's cremated remains were buried on April 7 at his parents' gravesite in St. John's, Newfoundland.

POWER, Elsie - With broken hearts, and memories that we will treasure forever, we say our final goodbyes to Mom. Elsie (Piercey) Power, 75 years, born in Norman's Cove on January 6, 1941, passed ever so suddenly on March 8, 2016, just as she said she always wanted, in her own home in Chapel Arm. Predeceased by her husband Edward, February 2, 1997, parents James and Elizabeth (Warren) Piercey, brothers; Arthur, Jonas, Merrill and Gerald and sisters; Melvina (Boatwright) and Gladys. Left to mourn and remember are daughters; Marina (James O'Flaherty, Shearstown, NL), Debbie (Albert Butt, Moncton, NB), Beverly (Ray Penney, Carbonear, NL), son Merrill (Doris Branton, Amherstburg, ON), grandchildren; Lisa, Angie, Melissa, and Holly and great-grandchildren; Jaymee, Abby, Noah, Benjamin, Sarah, Adele, Lucas, Harmony and Aryan. Mom loves animals, and was Nan to all of our pets, from dog sitting to bathing and especially being our rock when there were decisions to be made. No matter when, she came where she was needed. For a short time, Mom also fostered a cat, Penny, from Baccalieu Trail SPCA. She loved to go trouting and berry picking in the summer with a good cup of tea in the woods. At our mother's request a private visitation with her immediate family and her children will take place at Holloway's Funeral Home, Whitbourne on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 11 am . We are comforted knowing she will re-unite with those who have passed before her, including her husband of 64 years, Anthony (March 2015), and granddaughter, Jennifer (February 2009), parents, Maurice and Sarah (Callahan) McDonald, stepmother Bride, siblings Genevieve, Mae, Pauline, Sadie, Sister Mary Vincent McDonald, William, Patrick, Marie, and baby Angela. Mom was born in Goose Cove, White Bay and left home to further her education and receive formal training at St. Bride's College. After teaching in Goose Cove, Flowers Cove and St. John's, she married her childhood sweetheart and raised her family on Portugal Cove Road, Walwyn Street, and Oakridge Drive. In midlife, she thoroughly enjoyed attending Memorial University to upgrade her teaching certificate, and returned to her profession to continue educating. Even though she raised a large family, Mom never hesitated to offer a plate of food (usually her own), and a bed (one of ours), to any family or friend that was in need. Mom's love of gardening was admired by all and there is a piece of her labors in many flower beds throughout NL. Mom was a faithful servant in her many roles with the Mary Queen Of Peace Ladies Auxiliary, and St. Paul's Catholic Women's League. RYAN (nee Barry), Dr. Catherine Christine - (December 20th, 1928 - March 25th, 2016) - Catherine (Cathleen) Ryan passed away Friday, March 25, 2016 following a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Born December 20, 1928 in Dublin, Ireland to Johanna Prenderville and Joseph Barry, and predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Dr. James Vincent Ryan of St. John's NL, Cathleen will be sadly missed by her family in Toronto, Barry Ryan (Beth Harrington), Siobhan Ryan (David Lever), Kathleen Ryan, Charlotte Ryan and Maggie Lever, and her family in Ireland, Joan Ruane, Carmel Corish (Paddy), David Barry, Anne Barry and Eileen Barry as well as many nieces and nephews. Cathleen completed her medical degree at University College Dublin in 1952 and married her classmate James (Jim) Ryan the same year. Together they moved to St. John's Newfoundland and both began practicing medicine. Postgraduate work in dermatology and dermatopathology followed at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Jim and Cathleen moved permanently to Houston in 1972, and enjoyed the warm weather for many years. Cathleen moved to Toronto to join her son and daughter following the death of Jim in December 2009. Cathleen was blessed with brains, beauty and a terrific sense of humour. She loved discount shopping, spy novels and nice cars. Her 1966 Mustang was always fondly remembered. In spite of her proclaimed dislike of all domestic chores, especially cooking, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and great aunt whose warmth will be profoundly missed. Visitation will be held at Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mt Pleasant Rd, Toronto on Wednesday, April 6th from 7 to 9pm. A private funeral service and internment will follow.

SNOW, Reverend Etta M. - Passed away suddenly at home in Etobicoke, ON on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 aged 89 after a full and distinguished life. Born in Bay Roberts, NL, she is predeceased by her parents Philip and May; sister Helen; brothers Mark, Warren, Edward, Raymond, Sutherland and Philip Jr.; close friends Lillian Taylor and Kay Pearson. Etta will be forever loved by her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Left with cherished memories are her numerous friends including Rev. Dr. Marion Pardy, Rev. Joyce Myers-Brown and the Umbundu people of Angola who called her "Ondembelek" - the Comforter. After serving there as a United Church missionary for 23 years, she returned to Canada and was the first U.C. female from NL to be ordained. SQUIRES, Patrick - (May 25th, 1925 - March 6th, 2016) - Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on Sunday, March 6, 2016, Mr. Patrick Squires aged 90 years. "Uncle Pat", as he was widely known, lived all his life at Quidi Vidi Village until March 2015, when he moved into Bonaventure Retirement Home. He is the last surviving member of the Squires family (mother and father, Frank and Mary Squires). He leaves to mourn a large number of nieces and nephews especially Tommy Mallard and family, Kay Browne (Pat), Mary Veitch (Noel) and special lifetime friends from Quidi Vidi Village, Walter and Patricia Barrington, Eric and Olive Snelgrove. Pat also leaves to mourn the numerous new friends he made while living at the Bonaventure Retirement Home. "Uncle Pat" will be especially missed by his niece Kay Barrington, her husband John and Family. Uncle Pat spent many hours "up on the deck", where he would sit for hours to look at the pond, the White Hills and everything in between. He loved his birthplace, Quidi Vidi Village. STRONG, Jack Jeffries - Passed peacefully away at home in St. John's on March 18th, 2016, Jack Jeffries Strong at the age of 88. Predeceased by his wife Eileen, father James Strong, mother Elizabeth Strong and sisters Louisa Russell and Eva Spindler. Jack had a loving family, sons Jim (Jill Diamond) and Andrew (Anne Marie Powers), granddaughters Kelly (Bryan Morgan), Sarah (Conrad, Matt and Brooke Vincent) and Melissa, as well as special friend Vera Dupree (and family). Jack will also be remembered fondly by a large circle of friends, as well as relatives in England. Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, Jack grew up during the Depression and at the age of 16 joined the Merchant Navy and went on to study to become a Captain. In 1964 he accepted a job at the College of Fisheries (now the Marine Institute) in St. John's, where he worked for 20 years before retiring. He was an active volunteer with St. Augustine's Parish and with many organizations throughout his life, such as The Newfoundland Horticultural Society, Peter Pan Lawn Bowling Association and The Merchant Navy Veterans Association. Jack was an ardent gardener and wrote a gardening column with The Telegram for over 27 years. He had a passion for travelling and exploring the world, which began as a young seaman and continued throughout his life with Eileen and family, and then in later years with Vera. His annual salmon fishing trip with his sons was a cherished tradition. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly remembered for his sense of humor, love of life and kind soul. As per Jack's wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jack's life will take place at 10 am on March 28th, 2016, at St. Augustine's Anglican Church, Westerland Road, St. John's. No flowers by request. VAN VLACK, Paul Howell - 1923-2016 - After a life very much lived, Paul passed away on March 15, 2016 in Belleville, ON, at age 92. Paul had two wonderful marriages, being predeceased by Marjorie (Gillespie) and Trudy (Taylor). He will be deeply missed by his loving family: daughters, Jane Van Vlack (Stephen Hatfield) and Judy Bradley (Larry), grandsons Jonathan Edge, Brian Edge, Donald Bradley (Erica Robbins), Paul Bradley (Hilary Burns) and granddaughter Christine Hatfield (Dan Ethier) and great-granddaughter Michelle Ethier. Paul joined the Bank of Nova Scotia at age 16 in Newcastle, NB, and was a Senior Executive (General Manager of Eastern Ontario) when he retired after a fulfilling career of 30 years. While Manager of Ottawa's Main Branch and subsequently through his work as a consultant, Paul loved interacting with politicians and diplomats, both on a business level and socially with his wife, Marjorie. Paul had a wonderful sense of humour and positive outlook on life that shone through most everything he did. Paul remained active his whole life. He enjoyed golfing, swimming and following sports (especially cheering on the Blue Jays and Senators). Throughout his life, he volunteered for charities and for his community, recently serving as Treasurer for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Paul stayed well-informed about Canadian politics and worldwide current events, and used computer technology daily to keep up-to-date. He and Trudy travelled extensively and always revelled in the wonderful experiences they shared and people they met abroad. Paul had an enviable memory and could replay with great detail and appropriate embellishment his life's adventures. He took a genuine interest in people, nurturing and maintaining a great number of relationships and touching many lives. The people who were so special in Paul's life are too numerous to mention. Paul's family is eternally grateful for your friendship to him. In his memoirs, Paul wrote: "I have truly been blessed with a wonderful life!" Family (including pets) was always most important to Paul. Being a grandfather especially gave him great joy. He was a wonderful support and inspiration to each of his grandsons who have all inherited much of their "Dadda's" charisma. He will definitely live on through them. At Paul's request there will be no public service. A private burial will take place at a future date in Picton, beside his beloved Marjorie and Trudy. Muriel Wells, of Brigus, was born in Markland, NL. on November 8, 1942 to Douglas and Marjorie Pinkston. She passed suddenly away at her winter residence in Florida on March 29, 2016. During her short career as a teacher, she made an indelible impression on her students before she decided to leave teaching and become a devoted wife and mother. As a strong supporter of her community, church and family, Muriel will be long remembered as a humble and compassionate person, who was endeared to all who knew her. Muriel was predeceased by parents, Douglas and Marjorie Pinkston, and her brother George Pinkston.

Frank Hoyles Wells was born in Cupids on January 17, 1940 to Frederick and Mabel Wells. He passed away after a brief illness at the Largo Medical Centre in Florida, on March 30, 2016. As a former police officer, contractor, business man, and mayor, Frank was well respected for his dedication and integrity. In his later years, Frank dedicated his summers to his favourite hobbies, gardening and berry picking and his winters with his friends and family in Florida. Frank's legacy will perhaps be best remembered as a devoted husband to Muriel, father to his three precious girls, and grandfather to his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Mabel Wells. Muriel and Frank leave to mourn their daughters Andrea (Norman Lockyer), Joanne (Rod Delaney) and Krista (Vincent Dawson); grandchildren, Jonathan, Taylor, Joshua and Joel; Muriel's sister Diane Pinkston-Best and brother John (Marilyn) Pinkston. WHALEN, Donald Bramwell - Passed away suddenly at his home, Donald Bramwell Whalen, aged 68 years. Predeceased by his parents Henry and Emma, brother Alfred, and sister Margaret. WILLIAMS, F. Owen - 79, passed on to be with Jesus Saturday, March 26, 2016. Owen was born in Goulds, Newfoundland, the son of the late Rita and Ernest Williams. While Owen always remained a devoted Newfie and loved his family and homeland greatly, he chose to come to the United States at age 18 where he met the love of his life, Rebecca Hendrix of Lexington. Owen faithfully served in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He fulfilled his dream of owning his own business, Owen Williams Heating and Air Conditioning, which he operated for 30 years and served as a member of the HVAC Association. Owen was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church until he became a founding member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Owen was a member of the Scottish Rite and Cayce Masonic Lodge where he served as Chaplain. He was a member of Jamil Shrine Temple where he previously served in the Hillbilly Unit. Owen is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rebecca; daughters LedaAnn (Marvin) Newman, Melanie (George) Ronan and Rebecca (Jason) Smith. One of Owen's greatest joys was his eight grandsons Jake and Josh Newman, Cass, Liam, and Evan Ronan, Jay, Hendrix, and Cole Smith. He is also survived by his sister Audrey Williams and brother Hector Williams of Goulds, Newfoundland. Owen loved traveling home to Newfoundland, listening to Newfoundland music, reading The Downhomer from Newfoundland, and cheering for the Clemson Tigers! He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was greatly loved by his family and will be immeasurably missed.
