ABBOTT, Edward Joseph
Published: June 03, 2019
Aged 78 years

Passed peacefully away in the arms of his loving wife, Sheila, on June 1st, 2019. Ed is predeceased by his beloved son Christopher and brother Robert. Ed grew up on York Street and had fond memories of being a "corner boy". Ed had a successful career with Browning Harvey as general manager. He loved his job and dedicated his life to his work and the community. Ed was very close to his family who cherished him. His nephew describes him as a "ray of sunshine," adding, "he was the most positive person, and brought his positive energy everywhere he went. Ed made the world around him a brighter place." Generosity came naturally to Ed. He helped every single member of his family -everyone- at some point in time. He will be remembered for his positivity and love for children-his own children, Chris and Tim; grandchildren James, Patrick, Sarah and Nicholas, many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. His immediate and extended family are deeply saddened by the loss of "Uncle Ed" but left with many loving memories. Cremation has taken place. To honour Ed's wishes, there will be no visitation. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. A donation in Ed's memory may be made to the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of Crohn's and Colitis Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Paul is predeceased by his mother, Marie Bowdring. Paul grew up on Bell Island but made St. John's his home for much of his life. One critic says Paul made the city a character in his Winterset Award-winning novel, The Stranger's Gallery. Fellow author and literary critic, Larry Mathews, said Bowdring was a "writer in complete command of his craft." The onset of illness prevented Paul from finishing his fifth novel. For twenty years Paul taught English at the College of the North Atlantic before deciding to write full-time. He was a long-time editor of Fiddlehead Magazine, and member of the Writers' Union of Canada. He was especially proud of his role in creating the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador. Paul leaves behind his wife, Glenda Ellsworth; daughter Julia Bowdring; brother Adrian Doyle; sisters-in-law Greta and Beth Ellsworth; who assisted in his care; and close friends Don, Doreen, and Frank. He will also be missed by the many friends and colleagues with whom he worked as editor, mentor, and volunteer. When not writing, Paul enjoyed playing tennis, watching professional soccer, and walking in his beloved Newfoundland landscape that he described so beautifully in words. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Paul's life at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, June 21, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Paul's name to the NL public libraries board. EVANS, George Wilfred
Born June 11, 1928, died June 8, 2019

Surrounded by love, in the room and far beyond, George passed away peacefully on a sunny, June evening, three days short of his 91st birthday. And what a full and happy 91 years they have been. He became a teacher at 16, a profession that meant he touched the lives of generations of students and colleagues around the province. He counted himself a lucky man: he said his secret was marrying well. George is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Helen, daughters Heather (Bob), Michele, son Adam (Nadine) and adored grandchildren Michaela, Renn, Hunter and Erin as well as nieces and nephews, close family friend Doris Short and other family. He had a busy life, from his first teaching positions in Grand Bay West and Plum Point where he was also essentially doctor, lawyer, letter writer, lay reader for the community to his Vice-Principal position at Queen Elizabeth Regional High School. And that was just his day job. He was active in the PTA, he led the local Army Cadets for years, he was lay reader in the Anglican Church for 25 years. When he retired from teaching, he did even more, sitting on the executive of the Retired Teachers Association, singing tenor in the CBS NTA Centennial Choir, supporting Queen's College, learning French, volunteering with the Cancer Society, delivering Meals on Wheels (his last delivery was only five years ago - he loved being of service to the 'old folks'). And, of course he worked on his golf game along with his favourite partner, Helen. He was a generous, kind and, perhaps most of all, engaged man, fascinated by the people and events around him. He loved just talking to people, finding common ground and listening. That was evident everyday from his interactions at the grocery store to his rapt attention to his grandchildren's knock-knock jokes and school, work and travel tales. He himself was a well-known storyteller, describing his early life growing up in Codroy in a big family, through his stint as a forestry surveyor, a Deputy returning Officer for the 1948 Confederation votes and short-lived (one season) as a rower in the St. John's Regatta. At times, it seemed he knew or had taught everyone, or their parents. It's hard to find words to convey how full of life he was right up until his final days. The world seemed brighter, more fun when he was a part of it - that was his gift to us and an inspiration but it also means we will miss him enormously. Special thanks to the staff at the Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and the staff at the Miller Centre Palliative Care Unit.for their care and kindness. If you chose, a donation can be made in his name to the Newfoundland and Labrador Retired Teachers Foundation for Children's Charities or any charity of your choice. In typical fashion, George Evans left instructions on how to close out this message. It is a quote from Tennyson: And on my passing: Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me, AND MAY THERE BE NO MOURNING OF THE BAR, WHEN I PUT OUT TO SEA. Visitation in the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews on Monday, 7 pm - 9 pm, Tuesday, 2 pm - 4 pm & 7 pm - 9 pm. Funeral service will take place from All Saints Anglican Church, Foxtrap on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 11 am. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, Dunn's Hill Road, Foxtrap. MURPHY, Andrew Joseph
After a sudden and brief illness, Andy left this world on June 10th, 2019 surrounded by those he loved at the age of 67. He leaves with wonderful memories his wife of 45 years Margie; their children: Corey, Kerry (Brad) and Brent (Erin) and his two grandsons: Michael and Drew that he adored. His siblings: Arnold (Anne), Gerry (Lorraine), Roy (Jeannie), Ted (Patrina), Ray, Alex (Tammy), Mary (Tom), Betty Anne (Mark), Georgina and Lori; many nephews and nieces, and too many friends to name who will forever remember him for his kind and funny spirit. His cat Hussy will miss him as much as anyone.
Andy put family first and it showed in the relationship that he had with Margie. They were kindred spirits that were born to be together. After so many years he still called her his little darling. If you were fortunate to spend time with two of them together, you walked away knowing you just experienced what true love looks like. They have an indescribable love. He was a hero to his children and grandsons. He worked hard for everything he had to raise three amazing kids who are the perfect mix of him and Margie. He talked to his kids every day because it mattered to him. They would do anything for their parents and always came home to visit. Everyone is welcomed at their home. These are the things that made him proud. Andy was born on Crawley's Island, grew up in the Cove (Mount Arlington Heights) and settled in the Bottom (Long Harbour) and that was as far away as he wanted to be from the ocean, the Trout Ponds and the Berry Hills. With the exception of one special trip to Calgary to surprise Kerry, and Saturday trips to Normans Cove with Roe to play poker with the boys, or a trip to Indian Harbour, he never cared for being away. After his family, Andy loved nature best. He knew and respected the land and water around him as well the wildlife knew and respected him. He fished his favorite spots between Henry's Hole and Dan's Ledge, trouted in the ponds and rivers, picked wild raspberries, bakeapples, blueberries and partridge berries, and hunted moose, birds and rabbits as the seasons allowed. His catch of the day was shared with family, friends and especially the seniors of the community. He never wanted more than he needed and took great joy in giving a meal of some sort to anyone who would appreciate it. He gave back to nature in abundance, he fed the crows every day with table scraps, had an eagle that waited for him on the point of the island as he knew there would be fish for him, delivered herring to Aunt Gladys to feed her pet gull, and had a wild loon that comes back every year to feed her babies with trout she takes from Andy's hand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDHyL-Y962o Andy had a gentleness that animals and children could recognize. He shared his love of the outdoors with every little kid who ever wanted to learn to fish. He had a special secret with all the little ones in his family, the "money rock" was a hike in the woods and a hiding place for coins that was a special event when you found out about it. His infectious spirit for fun and enjoyment has touched many generations. If you spent time with Andy, you always left feeling like you were someone special. He knew what he liked and wasn't one to compromise. He was honest to a fault and always spoke his truth even when his opinion wasn't shared by others. He liked his toast done only on one side, homemade jam prepared by Margie, and lots of ice in his drink. He loved a game of crib, or just about any card game. He often joked about his poor carpentry skills but he could repair just about anything with a fish hook or a swivel. Andy's spirit will live on forever but his presence will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to really know him.
In honouring Andy's wishes, there will not be a funeral. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be scheduled for later in the summer and then his ashes will be spread at sea where he will surely be at peace. For those that wish to pay respect to his memory, do a kindness for someone else, clean up a piece of garbage off the beach, teach a child about the importance of nature or pet an animal in his name. Remember him in happy memories and stories and talk about the impact he made.

Of Francois, Port aux Basques, and Paradise. Teacher, counsellor, world traveler, avid reader, sports fan, music lover, gardener, card player, animal lover, bar-b-q chef, Bob Dylan expert and his biggest fan. He came from a good, strong family who made him the man he was. He will be missed by his mother, Muriel, and his siblings Donna, Bruce, Effie and Lisa, and their extended families.
