Viola Diamond was also commonly known as "Minnie Dino." At the Diamond house on "the corner," the door never stopped swinging with a steady stream of visitors. The young, the old and everyone in between, these were Minnie Dino's friends. Conversation and confidences flowed freely with Viola usually running the show. She never sought the limelight but she lived a public life. Among her many accomplishments she was proudest to be known as the founder and first chief of the Glovertown Fire Department in 1963. She was a well known Commissioner of Oaths and Issuer of Marriage Licences. She loved Traytown and Glovertown and over the decades kept poetic journals of the events and perceptions that moved her to write. She was fiercely independent and drove her own car into her 90's. Despite the number of years she lived Minnie Dino was not old. The twinkle in her eye and the laughter in her voice remained to the end.
"Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me!"

DOMINIC, George - Born in 23/11/1911 - (Oldest Alumni Member of St. Bonaventure's College) 1911-2009 - George Dominic, longtime resident of Corner Brook and Toronto, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 in Toronto. He was 97 years old. George was born on November 23, 1911 in Botwood, NL. His death was sudden and unexpected. He passed away quietly at 8:15 p.m., June 16 at Toronto East General Hospital. His family was with him at his bedside. George grew up in Botwood, attended St. Bonaventure's College in St John's, worked for Harvey and Co. in Corner Brook, moved to Toronto to retire and lived there until his death on Tuesday. He had a garden wherever he lived, from an extensive vegetable and flower garden in Corner Brook to a balcony garden in Toronto. He had three passions: his family; gardening and sports (they were one); and the rosary. In his memory and in his honour this tribute is written with the rosary, the prayer he so loved, in mind. (I have taken some liberty with the prayer order.) There are three sections to the rosary, one being the glorious. He is survived by the glories in his life; his three daughters Margaret Dominic (New York), Mary Costa (Mississauga) and Cathi Dominic, (Toronto); his two granddaughters, Heather Dominic (New York) and Michelle Costa (Toronto); his two brothers, Leo Dominic (St. John's) and Rufus Dominic (St. John's); sister Helen Hickey (New Jersey, U.S.A). His wife Elizabeth Fisher (Corner Brook); sisters Molly and Margaret; brothers Joseph, David and Murdoch; and son-in-law Jack Hannigan all preceded him in death. The middle section of the rosary is the sorrowful. For George, the most sorrowful was the death of his wife, Elizabeth, who preceded him in death in 2000. The third section of the rosary is the joyful. The joys of his life were his many wonderful nieces and nephews and extended family in both Canada and the United States, including: son-in-law Carlos Costa, (Toronto); sisters-in-law Eleanor Dominic (St. John's), Mona Fisher (Corner Brook), Alice Dominic (Grand Falls) and Winifred Dominic (NL); his friends which extended over a lifetime of almost 100 years; his correspondence, which was extensive - if he had your address you received a card; his friends at his Toronto residence at Thorncliffe Park Drive - their friendship was an important part of his life in his later years. And finally the Blue Jays and the joys of gardening. His love of gardening was immense. If plants were growable, he could grow them. He was the oldest member of his family, the oldest alumni member of St. Bonaventure's College, the oldest resident of his apartment complex and probably one of the oldest Blue Jays fans. He took great pride in his age. George's funeral will be held Saturday June 20th at 10 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Center, 50 Overlea Blvd., Toronto. For further information contact Mary Costa, 95 Trailwood Drive, #732, Mississauga ON, L4Z 3L2 or Margaret Dominic, 348 W. 21st Street, Apt. 4R, New York, N.Y. 10011, U.S.A. George would have been 98 this year. He had a wondrous, rich life and for this we are enormously grateful.

EMBERLEY, Eugene Edward - On June 30th, 2009, Eugene passed away peacefully at the age of 53 after being diagnosed with cancer eights months earlier. Eugene was a tower of strength for his family and friends during his entire illness. Each and every day he taught valuable lessons to everyone that came in contact with him. Eugene was born on July 8, 1955 in Placentia and he left his home in Newfoundland to become a permanent resident of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. During these 11 years, Eugene raised two wonderful boys, met and made some long-time friends. His boys followed in their Dad's footsteps eventually playing and pitching for their own baseball teams. Eugene hung up his pitching glove in 1990 to take on the new and rewarding position as coach until 2003. Not only did he coach baseball of various ages, he was also available to help out with girls fastball whenever a team needed some help. MURPHY, Brian Joseph - Brian Joseph Murphy was born in St. John's, Nfld. Nov. 4th, 1949. He thrived in the loving home of Mary and Joseph Murphy of Quidi Vidi Road, shared with four sisters Doreen, Gwendolyn, Sheila, and Joan. From early childhood, Brian (aka Murph) was the kid to whom everyone would gravitate. He could bring a smile to everyone's face, whether on the ice rink playing hockey, serving 6 a.m. Mass as an altar boy at St. Joseph's across from their home, fishing off the docks in St. John's with his father, or playing records with his friends. Brian attended Gonzaga H.S. but completed Grade 12 at Brother Rice in order to extend his ice time. He received his BSc. and MSc. degrees in biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. While at MUN, Brian became chairman of their entertainment committee. This is the professional way of saying Brian attained a minor degree in Rock 'n Roll. He brought bands to town including Alice Cooper, Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, The Strawbs and many others. Brian left the Rock, reluctantly, to start a PhD program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in 1975. During his time there, he spent three months in the Antarctic gathering data which became the backbone of his career. He was granted his first post-doctorate program at Stanford University School of Medicine and moved to sunny California in 1980. In 1984 his second post doc. fellowship was granted at SRI International. Brian stayed on at SRI in the lab sciences division and dedicated his life to cancer research (and Halloween parties). In 1997, Brian married Juli Kennedy of Redwood City, California, to the surprise of most of North America. Brian and Juli were blessed with a son, Quinn, in 2002, and a daughter, Hope, in 2004. Brian was a very involved Dad. He continued to generate smiles on the faces of everyone around him, only now his days were spent balancing his research, helping at school, or growing a beautiful garden at his home. Brian died suddenly June 22nd, 2009. Although he was taken from us too early, we know our precious Brian Joseph, Murph, and Daddy, is now chairman of the gardens and music committees in heaven. We love you and miss you terribly. Services will be held to celebrate Brian's life at St. Pius Church in Redwood City, California 10 a.m. July 1st. A memorial in Newfoundland is planned for August 22nd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Quinn and Hope Murphy Trust Fund.
