DOODY, Monsignor James
Born: December 1st, 1925
Passed on: July 3rd, 2018
P.P., P.H
.
"He threw many of us a life line when we needed it"
As a child, Monsignor Jim Doody the son of Casimer Doody and Sarah Byrne of Mosquito, Colinet Island, S.M.B, helped his father in the fishery, and as a teenager he had his own fishing boat. For the last sixty-five years, he has been what the scriptures describes as a "fisher of people." Monsignor Jim Doody, age 92 years, set sail from this place on July 3, 2018, and thus he has secured his berth in the final port of call. James Joseph Doody was born on December 1, 1925. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of St. John's on June 21, 1953. As a 'fisher of people' he held a number of Pastoral and Administrative Appointments: St. Joseph's Parish, St. John's; Holy Apostles Parish, Renews; St. Kyran's, Bar Haven, Oderin, and Merasheen Parishes; Oderin Parish; Monsefu, Peru Parish; Sacred Heart Parish, St. Mary's; Sacred Heart Parish, Placentia; Ministry to Priest's Program, St. Joseph's Parish, St. John's; and his final and longest serving ministry was St. Patrick's Parish, St. John's and St. John Bosco Parish, Shea Height's (1986-2010). In December 1994, Pope John Paul II designated him as a Prelate of Honor (PH) with the lifetime title of Monsignor. It is recognition by the Vatican and Pope of special service rendered to the Church. He retired from active ministry in June 2010, taking up residence at St. Patrick's Mercy Home in 2012. He leaves to mourn: Archbishop Martin Currie, Brother Priests, Religious Sisters and Christian Brothers, his sister Etta Conway residing in Corner Brook, nieces and nephews, his special friend and caregiver Brenda King and family, the Staff, Sisters and Volunteers at St. Patrick's Mercy Home and all who cared so well for him. Visitation at St. Patrick's Mercy Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 4th, 3-5 pm; Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, Wednesday, July 4th, 7-9 pm and Thursday, July 5th, 10 am - 5 pm; St. Patrick's Church, Patrick Street, Thursday, July 5th, 6-9 pm.; with Vigil Service at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, July 6th at 11 am St. Patrick's Church. Interment to follow in the priests' plot at Belvedere Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the building fund in your home parish.
His boat of life was filled to the brim with family and friends. He took many of us in when our boats capsized, and he threw many of us a life line when we needed it. In life, he knew at times what it was like to be adrift but always found his way back to the harbour where he laid anchor with us and we are all so very grateful.

EVANS, Chad Frederick
Born: July 9th, 1969
Passed on: July 8th, 2018

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the sudden passing of my precious son, Chad, one day before his 49th birthday. Left to mourn, with a broken heart, but many wonderful, happy memories is his mother, Betty Gulliver. Also left to mourn is a huge list of family, friends, and co-workers. Chad's passion in life was to save all the furry friends, namely cats. He had reached out to Mollies Dream for medical help to spay and neuter 3 cats, which live outdoors, and which he fed twice daily for a number of years, along with his own domestic cats. Chad's other passion in life was gardening, where he felt one with the earth, commenting it was cathartic. Well Chad, you left beautiful finished gardens on earth. Now you need to create another garden in Heaven, and name it "The Garden of Chad". Life on earth will never be the same without you. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 from 2-4 & 7-9p.m. Chad's wish was that donations be made, in his memory, to Mollie's Dream or to the SPCA, where their work is so important. She is predeceased by husband Charlie who was the love of her life, the one who always put a smile on her face and in her heart; parents Terrence and Elizabeth Kent, sister Teresita Doyle (brother-in-law Paul), brother Norbert (sister-in-law Mary) and deceased members of the Kent and Evans families. Leaving to mourn her loving and dedicated children: daughters Donna, Joanne and Lynn, son Mark (Denise); cherished grandchildren Danika and Michael; very special nieces Mary Beth and Paulette Doyle; many relatives in the Kent and Evans families and a large circle of friends. Special thank you to Dr.'s Joanne MacIntyre and Karen Lake who cared for mom so kindly and gently in the last five years. We will always appreciate how you treated mom with compassion and respect. We know she trusted and respected you in return. Mom had incredibly strong faith which gives us comfort at this extremely sad time. She was a long time member of the Holy Trinity Torbay Catholic Women's League and the Holy Trinity church choir. Mom was the sweetest, kindest and most selfless person we knew, she always put the wellbeing of others ahead of herself. She was a fantastic cook and her homemade cookies were in demand at every family, church and community function, and by her neighbours with whom she shared so often and willingly. She was the best mother we could have ever hoped for and we are forever grateful for the wisdom, joy and unconditional love she provided. We will miss you every minute mom but know you are safe and happy reunited with your Charlie. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, Torbay. FOX, Cyril James (Cy)
Born: July 26th, 1931
Passed on: July 10th, 2018

Cyril was born in St. John's Newfoundland and was the eldest son of Justice C.J. Fox, the First Chairman of the National Convention, and Mary Fox (nee Cashin). Born a proud Newfoundlander during a tumultuous time, Cy campaigned fervently for Responsible Government, and throughout his life identified always as a Newfoundlander. Cyril began his education at St Bonaventure's College in St John's. He was innately a scholar with a deep passion for literature and the arts. Futile attempts to raise young Cyril's nose from books and lower his head from his budding dreams earned him the moniker 'Smell the Moon' from his practical and ever pragmatic grandmother Lady Gertrude (Mullowney) Cashin. A last attempt to forcibly mold the scholar to a businessman by an ill fated trial on the Grand Banks resulted merely in alternating bouts of nausea and relentless yearning for the written word, onshore! Cyril excelled at academics and after beginning his post secondary education at Memorial University in 1948, completed his B.A. at St. F.X. He won the Rhodes Scholarship in 1952 and entered Merton College, Oxford, Law. After recuperating from contracting TB while in England, Cyril completed his Masters in Modern History at Columbia University, NYC. In 1961 he joined the Associated Press as a journalist in Newark, New Jersey. Two years later he transferred to the AP 's partner, Canadian Press with whom which he transferred back to London England in 1967. From his London base Cyril roamed Paris, Belfast, Brussels, Cyprus and Bucharest covering a range of foreign stories including the Parisian student riots, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the UN Population Conference. In 1974 he became Chief Sub Editor of the Reuters World Desk at Fleet Street which saw him seconded to Hong Kong and New Delhi covering political events. Cyril retired from Reuters in 1986 and returned to Canada in 1994 after his health began to suffer from "years of relishing English beer in Fleet St. pubs" and his soul's perpetual yearning for the Newfoundland of his boyhood. The adventures of his professional life were fondly and entertainingly memorialized by the publishing of his memoirs in 2009's "New World, Old World: Bridging the North Atlantic". During his decades abroad Cy developed deep and lifelong friendships that he cherished and stoked upon his return to Canada, and ultimately Newfoundland. Cyril was an enthusiastic student and collector of art and literature and amassed one of the world's largest collections of the works of Wyndham Lewis. He was widely recognized as an expert of Lewis' paintings and writings and was requested to lecture often and afar on Lewis. Cyril was a Trustee of the Wyndham Lewis Society and offered his expertise to Kensington Library, Dover College, Reading University and enthusiastically returned to Memorial University to give the E.J. Pratt lecture where he pointed up convergences between Pratt's poetry and Lewis. Typical of his quiet, generous soul, in 2006 he donated his vast collection to the University of Victoria where it remains on site as "The CJ FOX Collection". Cy was predeceased by his parents, C.J. Fox, and Mary (nee Cashin), his eldest sister Marie Fox, his sisters and their respective spouses Joan LaFontaine (Jean), Nora Cahill (Gerard), Sheila Ryan (Frank), his sister-in-law Madeline Fox, his infant brother Charles Fox, his infant nephew Jeffrey Fox, his nephew John Ryan and his infant great-niece Kathleen Beer. He is survived by his non scholarly but athletic brother David Fox of St. John's, numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Cy was intuitively interested in who they were, and who they were becoming as Global Citizens. At Cyril's request, Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Sunday July 15th from 2-4 and 7-9 at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd, St. John's. A funeral mass in celebration of Cyril's life will be held at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Monday July 16th at 9:30. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. Dorothy moved to Suffolk with her late husband, Harry, in 1953. From that time onwards, she was a contented resident of Leiston. She taught at the local primary schools in Leiston, Snape and Yoxford for many years and generations of children benefited from her no-nonsense but kindly approach which brought the best out of everyone. Dorothy was part of the formation dancing team representing Suffolk on the television show Come Dancing. She was a frequent visitor to Canada. She is survived by her two children David (married to Jennifer, from St. John's Newfoundland, Canada) and Michael (married to Clare from Winchester); her three grandchildren Laura (married to Rodney), Nicholas (married to Laura) and Joseph (and his partner Allison) all live in Canada, together with her great-grandson Nickson, who arrived in 2016.
