THISTLE, Dr. Howard G. - It is with deep sorrow that Marion (Thistle) Jackson of St. John's Newfoundland announces the death of her nearest and dearest brother, Howard Thistle, 78, on July 8th, 2013, at a hospital in Nyack, N.Y. He will be most sorely missed by his loving friend and life-partner of 50 years, Christopher (John) Calt, as by his New City friends Cristel and Erna, his New York colleagues, and by a host of Canadian nieces and nephews whose generous 'Uncle Howard' played host to many a pleasant New York holiday. Special acknowledgement and vote of thanks is owed to his niece Pauline (Thistle) Tenberg who has travelled repeatedly to his home in New City over the past year, and especially over recent months of the decline of Howard's health, working with her sisters and husband to ensure the welfare and nurture of both Howard and John, right up to and during their recent hospitalization. Growing up in a small Newfoundland village, Dr Thistle earned his medical degrees in Halifax and Toronto and in the early '60s joined the staff of the Rusk Institute, a prestigious rehabilitation center within the New York University Hospital system. His work there as a director of rehabilitation medicine became the epicentre of his life until he retired, very reluctantly, but a few years ago. Though Canadian, Howard became a total New Yorker, delighting both in the rustic setting of his home up the Hudson - he was a superb chef and host as many who attended his frequent feasts could attest - and in Manhattan's legendary artistic, theatrical and culinary offerings. His remains will be returned to Newfoundland for burial; a family memorial wake for 'Uncle Howard' in St. John's will be held at a later date.

Predeceased by the love of his life his wife Florence Westcott (nee Haggett), his loving father Walter, his beautiful mother Mary Westcott (nee Grills). Left to mourn & celebrate his life are his daughter Geralyn (Keith) & granddaughter Gillian of Kingston, NS; David (Brenda), grandchildren Jimmy & Ashley, Manuels, NL; sisters Hilda (George Whittle - deceased), Gloria (Gordon Goobie), Margaret (Dermot Coady); brothers - Raymond (Barbara), Ralph (Ester) Bill (Betty) and Walter (Christine); sisters-in-laws Cynthia, Pearl, Loretta, Gloria, Glenda, many nieces & nephews and so many friends including his Carbonear Family (the Fraize's/Gillinghams) & close friends, Gerald & Shirley Barbour, Chamberlains, NL. Dad was born on Pennywell Road, St. John's, NL. As a young boy he worked at selling the Daily News in St. John's to help support his family. Dad's love of furnaces & stove maintenance started when he would always be called on by the Teacher at school to keep the fire burning for his class. He preferred this to doing school work. Dad loved to be warm. At the young age of 14, Dad started work with John Clouston Ltd., Duckworth Street, St. John's, NL. Dad worked with Clouston's for only a few years when Al Clouston, his boss, saw the opportunity to have a great man in Sales. Dad was named as "top salesman" many times. In later years, he moved back to Oil Burner Mechanic fixing everyone's furnace at all hours of the day and night. Dad was well known all over St. John's and Conception Bay South by his little green Volkswagen bug, with John Clouston's Signs. Dad was dedicated to his St. Thomas of Villa Nova Parish in Topsail and the late Father Jackman where he would be called upon to do many errands for the Parish. Dad also was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus Father McCormack Council 5769. Dad & his late buddy Walt Clements spent many hours making sure everything was ready for the Parish Bingo Hall. In 1987 he moved to the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia with his daughter & her husband. From there he had the opportunity to live in Ottawa Valley (Petawawa), Ontario, then Gander, NL, where he thoroughly enjoyed his summer trips with Mom to visit his son, David and his extended family the Barbours for extended periods. After leaving Gander, NL he moved back to the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia to re-unite with old friends and once again enjoy the camaraderie of Knights of Columbus Bishop Gallager Council 6297 where he received his 4th Degree. While in Kingston, Dad enjoyed working as an Oil Burner Mechanic with Brown & Murphy Services in Middleton, N.S. for a few years before he retired. Dad had an infectious sense of humor which brought joy to all those who met him. His love of laughter helped him through the many challenges he faced in his life. Dad will always be remembered for his loving devotion to his family and friends. Whenever people think of Dad it is with respect and above all the remembrance of a "good laugh". He was a gentle man, our Dad. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2013 in Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl, NL, where the memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Barrett's Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Pearl, NL.
