AMBLER, Keith John - 1931-2011. We, the family and loved ones of Keith, sadly announce that he died on July 2, 2011 in the Palliative Care Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. He died as he lived - with courage, dignity, consideration of others and, perhaps most of all, with a keen sense of humour. He will be remembered with love by his partner of forty years, Carole Jardine and her son, Iain, to whom he was a second Dad, and by his children Lindsay, Jonathon (Jill), Jeremy (Sheila), and Meriel Warren (Brian). He was Grandpa to Seana, Grant, Michael, Simon, Josie, Kristen, Taylor and Izaiya, and great Grandpa to Riley, Ben and Maple. He is survived by his sister, Gail and her family in B.C. and by his caring sister-in-law Ann Ambler and her children in England. He will be remembered also by his former wife Shelagh with whom he maintained a lasting friendship over the past four decades. He will be much missed by Carole's family - her sisters Gillian, Hilary, Vivien and Cindy and her brothers Robin and Alan Wass and their families. He was predeceased by his brother Roger, and by his parents Hector and Minnie Ambler, all of Wolverhampton, England. As a physiotherapist at WMRH for many years, he will be remembered by his many colleagues as a skilled practitioner who brought out the best in people and who sped down the corridors and ran the stairs at a pace few could match. Keith had a great love of and respect for the sea, and a lifetime of sailing experience. At seventeen he joined the Merchant Navy and sailed from England to Argentina and back. Always a sailor, he was secretary for the Bay of Islands Yacht Club for many years, took great pleasure in ‘messing around in boats' and always had a yarn to spin. Keith was always willing to help others throughout his life, and donations to charities in his memory will help continue that spirit. Instead of flowers, remembrances may be made to the ALS Society (Corner Brook Branch), the Food Bank Network, or to your favourite charity. Cremation has taken place, and at Keith's request, there will be no memorial service. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 5 from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, July 6 from 2-4 p.m.

Ball, Mary Louise (nee Shaw)
died July 1, 2011

She liked to instill confidence in students in her composition Class at North Shore Cummunity College in Danvers. She would begin the semester by assuring them they could succeed. She rarely gave out A's, but students rose to her high standards. In her nearly 20 years of teaching at the school, not a single pupil complained about her teaching techniques, said Maureen O'Neill, dean of liberal studies at the college. Even after Mrs. Bell was diagnosed with cancer in the spring, she continued teaching. She had her brother pick up the final papers for her to grade so she could finish the semester. "She was a person who cared very, very deeply for our students," said O'Neill. "I think what she liked most about her work was she had the chance to help students think critically and see the world in a new way, and she could help them appreciate the value of the written word." Mrs. Bell, a devoted advocate of education, died July 21 from complications of lung cancer at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was 80.
Born in Boston, Mary Louise Shaw grew up in Everett; her parents were immigrants from Newfoundland. She was 12 when her mother died, leaving her to care for her four younger siblings alone during her father's frequent absences while he was working. Though relatives in Newfoundland urged the family to move back, they stayed in Massachusetts. "It was five of us all together, and she kind of took over for us - she became like the mother," said her younger brother Fred Shaw of North Reading. "She kind of guided us through life." While helping raise her siblings, she graduated from St. Clement High School in Somerville. She worked for a few years to collect money for college and went to Salem State College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. She earned a master's degree in history from Boston University. In the late 1950s, while working at the coat check room at the Wonderland Ballroom in Revere, she met Thomas Bell, then a police officer with the Revere Police Department, and they soon married. Shortly thereafter, she took a job teaching in the North Reading school district. "She was a strong person and independent at a time, in the '50s and '60s, when women weren't," said her son Tom Bell of Yarmouth, Maine. The Bells began traveling, taking a month to visit places in Europe, where Thomas had served during World War II. The couple bought a Volkswagen Beetle to make the drive, and sold it at the end of their trip. She had a deep appreciation for her husband's being a veteran and for European history. She traveled throughout Europe.
In the late 1960s, the couple opened Chapman Nursery School in Everett. Later, they bought a Baskin Robbins store in Lynn, allowing her to pursue business and raise a family. She would take the children to Plum Island every summer and on weekend ski trips. "She was like a cheerleader for me - very, very positive and very pleased with any success I had," Tom Bell said. "I was always trying to make her proud of me." Mrs. Bell also served as a director at the Lare Training Center in Chelsea. There, she coached women who were beginning their careers, teaching them such skills as what to wear to an interview and how to craft a resume. "She liked the fact that she was trying to help these people get off welfare and helped get them into the working world," said her daughter Barbara Richard of Newburyport. She resumed her teaching career at North Shore Community College, where she saw the difficulty many of her students faced and wanted to help them grow. "She was just a very gentle person with them, and she was just as determined as they were to be successful," O'Neill said.
After her husband died in 1999, Mrs. Bell continued teaching - and laughing, something her granddaughter Ihila Bell of Yarmouth, Maine, admired. "She has always been a role model for me because she's always been extremely independent," her granddaughter said. "Her husband died a few years ago, but she still laughed a lot and had a really good sense of humor. We were always laughing." Because she was constantly reading and learning, Mrs. Bell excelled in trivia, and when not rooting for Boston sports, she favored television programs such as "Jeopardy.". "Everyone knew not to call from 7:30 to 8 p.m. because she would be watching "Jeopardy." You just don't call then," Richard said. Mrs. Bell was a patron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for more than 50 years, attending Tanglewood with the same group of friends annually.
In addition to her son, daughter, brother, and granddaughter, Mrs. Bell leaves three sisters, Kathleen Harvey and Dorothy Barbaccia, both of Delray Beach, Fla., and Barbara Pouliot of Goffstown, N.H. Services have been held. Masonic Service at 7:30 PM. Memorial Service will be Monday at 2:00 PM at Asbury Grove, 35 Pleasant Avenue,South Hamilton, MA. Private burial. www.brownandhickey.com

COUSENS, J. Desmond (Des), PhD- It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing, following a short illness, of Desmond Cousens at the H.S.C. in St. John's on July 10, 2011, with his loving wife of 23 years, Betty, at his side. Predeceased by his father, Charles, in 2005, Des leaves to mourn his wife, Betty Wells, and son Matthew; mother Betty Cousens and brother Dean of Brandon, MB; brothers- in-law Karl Wells (Larry Kelly) and Len Wells (Cecilia Ozon) of St. John's, as well as his nieces and nephews.
Born in St. John's on Nov. 5, 1944, Des attended Holloway School and Prince of Wales College, graduating in 1962 as class valedictorian. He was an outstanding student (usually at the head of his class) and athlete, with many trophies and awards in recognition of his activities. At school and university Des played hockey, soccer, basketball, and baseball, He was also a member of several of the Guards' teams, and played tennis at Riverdale Tennis Club. His summers were spent in Manuals, where his water skiing and swimming skills were among the best.
Des studied Engineering at Memorial University and NS Tech, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree, followed by a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Dalhousie, where he also won the Alumnae Teaching Excellence Award in 1985. He spent most of his working career as Senior Scientist in the environmental division of Nova Scotia Power, before moving back to St. John's in 2007 and setting up his engineering consulting firm, Environmental Sciences and Engineering Consulting. Highly respected in his field, he was a member of an international group of experts on mercury pollution. Just as he did in school, his professional life also brought many awards of distinction.
Very few individuals with doctoral degrees can claim to have certificates in such things as "sheep husbandry" or as a certified farrier, but Des may have missed his calling. He had a special way with animals, starting with the trust he gained in taming an abused homeless racehorse named "George", which nobody could train. He enjoyed birds, regularly participating in official Christmas bird counts in Nova Scotia. In St. John's, his hiking buddies were impressed with his ability to mimic a bird call.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and support staff at the Health Sciences Centre for the outstanding care provided to Des over the past 4 weeks. In memory of Des, donations may be made to the Stella Burry Foundation at Emmanuel House. A celebration of Des' life will be held at Gower Street United Church on Friday, July 15th at 11:00 am.

HANN, Norbert - On the 4th of July, 2011, with no warning, Norbert Hann left us. We think he recognized a fine morning, and just like those mornings years ago, when he would load his dory, and prime his Johnson Outboard to seek Placentia Bay cod, he just decided to set sail. We think that Mercedes shared the tiller! Our grief notwithstanding, that sight is joyful to us. Most families in Newfoundland have a storyteller - we have had the privilege of having had an extraordinary storyteller! His language was the descriptive work of a master! Whether it was the unusual way of counting a poker hand, where he counted three fives as a "trip to Marystown" or the way he could make you "see" how thick the ice was on the rails of the Hopedale in a winter storm - he had a way with language! His repertoire is the stuff of Hann-legend. We will still tell the stories years from now. Norbert Hann was a seaman who rose to Chief Steward in CN and later Marine Atlantic. He was well known in virtually every community in coastal Newfoundland and Labrador. We joked that he helped so many people that he had kids named after him, we stopped joking when we met one of them whose Mother had endured her labour on a rough sea with Dad's support, and named that child after him! He knew everyone, and more than that, he could remember them in vivid detail and often had a little story to back up that memory! He walked the roads of Freshwater long before others thought of doing it for exercise. He could often be seen, like some Pied Piper, leading a group of grandchildren to the "broken down engines" on the Jerseyside track. Those kids grew up with Poppy's stories! When Mercedes entered Lions Manor, he stayed behind in the house in Freshwater - within six months he knew he wanted to be by her side. In the 15 months since Mercedes has left us, he often spoke of his loneliness for her. He is lonely no more. This father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend was much loved and will be much missed. Among those who will morn his passing are his children - Elaine (and Richard), Wayne (and Brenda), Larry (and Glenys), Lena (and Rick), and Ted (and Penny); his brothers - Jack (and Thora), Father Michael, and Ken (and Ann Marie); his sisters - Annie, Molly, Anita, Triffie (and Jack), Rita (and Blake), and Bernice (and Stan); and his grandchildren - Cassidy, Kate, Erica, Maclean, Giselle, Wayne, Allie, Candace, and Daniel. To Aunt Molly, his sister, we extend our deep gratitude and thanks - she was Dad's strongest support, and his dear friend. To his sister, Annie, we know you will miss those evening conversations with your brother. To his friends and the medical community at Lions Manor, thank you for your years of kind support. To Paul and his staff at Maher's Funeral Home, thank you for taking such good care of him and us. To the ladies of the Holy Rosary Guild, you are always there, thank you. Resting at Maher's Funeral Home in Placentia. Visitation on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Freshwater; refreshments to follow at Freshwater Parish hall. To sign the guest book, visit www.mahersfuneralhome.ca

Our dear, sweet, gentle, generous and very devoted Mom, Nan, Great-Grandma, Aunt and true friend, blessed our lives with her very warm, caring soul along with her remarkable sense of humour and unending wit and wisdom. She was an amazing and inspiring role model, always demonstrating love, peace, kindness, concern for all others and great compassion throughout our lives, an exceptional mother who worked endlessly for her many children.
She had a way of making each and every person feel important and valued, retaining information about their lives and always asking for updates in her very genuine, charming and sincere manner. She had a special charisma that drew people and animals toward her, engaging in meaningful interactions with all. Those who knew her felt blessed and privileged to be part of her family and friends.
In her presence, there was an essence of Godliness. Her faith and devotion to God, St. Anthony, and other saints, and her fervent prayers for all, and for all purposes, was a true vocation for our Saintly Annie. She prayed with the utmost devotion, vigour and very true intention, even clicking away at her rosary beads late into the evening, no matter how she felt.
"Our dearest mom/nan was a wonderful blessing to all of us"
