GOUNDREY, Shirley Althea (nee Manning) - Died on January 12, 2006 at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, B.C. She is survived by her husband of 56 years (Gordon), her son (John), her daughter (Jane), her grandchildren (Leila, Liam, Amy and Joanna) and her sister (Moyra Kirkland of Campbell River).
Shirley was born at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver in 1921 and spent her early years in Anyox. When the mine in Anyox closed down, the family moved to Vancouver and, in later years, to Nelson and Allenby. She finished high school in Princeton and, after service in the RCAF (WD), attended the University of British Columbia where she met her future husband. She transferred to the University of Toronto in her final year of studies and completed her B.H.Sc.
Shirley was actively involved in social and feminist issues. She worked with the Children's Aid Society in Toronto and Hamilton and with the Consumers' Association of Canada in Edmonton. She was a founding member of the Newfoundland Status of Women Council and the Women's Place in St. John's. She was involved with the United Nations Women's Guild in New York. She was the secretary of the National Council of Women of Canada in 1974 and was the joint recorder of the Council's meetings with the federal cabinet in Ottawa that year.
She was an accomplished hand weaver and was a member of the London Weavers and Spinners Guild in England and of the weaving guilds of Vancouver Island, Nanaimo, Chilliwack and Surrey. Her weaving was seriously curtailed by a near fatal accident in 1987 which left her partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. In spite of this hardship, she persevered and continued to be active socially, playing bridge and participating in the ongoing activities of the Canadian Federation of University Women, using the internet to research and make recommendations on a wide range of social issues.
She was widely loved and respected and showed great determination and rare courage in dealing with adversity. She will be badly missed by her family and friends all over the world.
Many thanks for the compassionate care Shirley received from doctors, nurses and technicians at Peace Arch Hospital. There will be no service by request.
