BRACE-HILL Karen Helen Dec. 27, 1977 - Feb. 16, 2021 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Helen Hill on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the young age of 43 years. Karen's personality was larger than life itself with an immense and unwavering passion and love for her daughters. When she was younger, she made many skits and plays, and later in life, she got great joy from playing practical jokes on her friends and family; if you were around her at Hallowe'en, you had best look out! Karen possessed a love for all things different, which made her very open and accepting. She was a true artist and showed her creativity and talent through her photography and paintings. Although she raised her family in Alberta, she was a proud Newfoundlander; she was so elated to bring her family there to show them her roots and culture. Karen will forever be remembered, loved and missed by all who were fortunate to have known her. "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light" Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter Karen is survived by her spouse, Pernel Shilo Hill; daughters, Charis Lynn Hill and Riely Jean Hill; father, Calvin Philip Brace; mother, Barbara Louise Smith; siblings, Heather (Allen) Hayes and Michelle (Chris) Tait; grandmother, Helen (Elsene) Brace; nieces and nephews, Kailee Hayes, Ava Hayes, Brooklyn Tait and Phoenix Tait, as well as by many extended family and friends. She is predeceased by her grandparents, Jean and John Anderson; brother, Philip Brace; grandfather, Alex Brace and step-father, Roland Smith. We will always carry our memories of Karen within our hearts. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, a gathering to honour Karen's life will be held at a later date.

BURT Hilda Passed peacefully away on February 17th, 2021, Hilda Burt, wife of 68 years to James Burt. Daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Hyde) Randell, mother to Garry (deceased; Margie) and Judy (David, deceased); sister to Irene (Len, both deceased), Ralph (deceased; Mabel), Don (deceased; Betty), Gord (deceased; Nancy), Sue (Pete, deceased) and Betty (Warwick, deceased); loving grandmother to Kelly (Joel), Lisa (Doug), Karen (Chris) and Kim (Trevor); proud great-grandmother of Leah, Lochlyn, Mason, Hannah, Kinsley, Sam, Anna, Ella and James, along with many special nephews, nieces, dear in-laws and great friends. Born and raised in beautiful Port Rexton, Newfoundland. Hilda was a gentle soul from the very beginning. Inline with her caring nature, Hilda became a teacher. Her first teaching job was across the island in Rose Blanche. As the story goes, she arrived on a stormy day, and was greeted by a dashing young man. His name was Jim, and thus started a lifelong love story. Over the years, there has always been some 'discussion' about who first left Rose Blanche, and 'who followed who' to St. John's - but the result was a lifelong love reflected in their marriage of 68 years. Hilda and Jim truly did everything together - this included making the best jigs dinner, bread, blueberry pudding and tea biscuits around. As Hilda and Jim started raising a family, she devoted her life to the care of her family, and later for other children as well. Hilda was lovingly known as "Quiet Nan" to many family and friends, both for her gentle nature and intention to feed anyone that graced her kitchen. Hilda's true love was Jim and her family, but she was a known lover of her garden, hanging out a good line of fresh laundry, a perfect cup of tea, her shows and a good game of cards. Jim and Hilda spent countless special nights with family and friends enjoying a game and good company. In earlier years, they enjoyed special times in Glace Bay, Heart's Delight - and in later years, they spent wonderful winters in Florida at the South Pasadena Mobile Home Park. We are ever grateful to the amazing people that cared for Hilda in these final years, especially the wonderfully caring staff at Glenbrook Lodge, who care equally for every resident, everyday. As when you cared for Jim, we know you are the true heroes, especially in times such as this. You will be remembered always. Thank you. A celebration of both Hilda and Jim's lives will occur later, when family and friends can gather again. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in her memory. DAWE Rita Daisy (McKay) May 19, 1926 - February 22, 2021 It is with great sadness that the family of Rita Dawe announce her passing at Tiffany Village on February 22, 2021. Rita will be lovingly remembered by her children: Don Dawe (Linda) Halifax, NS, Ivan Dawe (Patricia) Norris Point, NL, Beverley Simmons (Russell) St. John's, NL, daughters-in-law: Lorraine Dawe, Penticton, BC and Margaret Dawe, St. John's, NL; her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Ian Dawe, Neal (Emilie) Dawe (children Simone, Weston and Nora), Shaun (Samantha) Dawe (children Hannah and Sophie), Adrienne Dawe, Nadia Dawe (son Raymond), Maggie (Mark) Courish (children Clara and Amy), her brother Jim (Ruby) McKay, Wetaskiwin, AB, her sister-in-law Eileen McKay, South Brook, NL and a large number of beloved nieces and nephews. Rita is predeceased by her husband Reginald, who died tragically in 1967, her sons Byron (2011) and Merrick (2015), her daughter-in-law Bernice (2015), her brothers Calvin, Eddy and Max McKay, her sister Crissie Dicks, her brother-in-law and wife, Pearce and Verna Dawe. Rita was the first child born to Walter and Pearl McKay of South Brook, NL. She started her life as a premature infant but went on to a long life of love, family, friends and travel. For several years, at her home in St. John's, NL, Rita was the caregiver to Reg's parents (Isaac and Lavinia Dawe). She was the glue that kept the family together with cards, letters, phone calls and well chosen gifts in celebration of every special occasion. Her home was a welcoming place for all out of town family and friends, where there was always an extra place at the table. It is not surprising that many of our friends affectionately called Rita "Mother". Rita travelled with family and friends to parts of Europe, the United States and Canada, but her trips to Edmonton, Halifax and Ottawa to visit her grand and great-grandchildren were always the most special ones. Rita had a deep abiding faith in God, was a long-time and active member of the UCWA and for many years volunteered at the Agnes Pratt Nursing Home in St. John's. The family is very appreciative of the excellent care Mother received at Tiffany Village, her home for the last five years. Rita had a long and well lived life. She will be forever cherished and remembered for her love, thoughtfulness and generosity. Due to ongoing Covid concerns, a celebration of her life will take place at a later time. DAY Marion Frances It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marion Frances Day who died tragically at Carbonear General Hospital on February 12, 2021 at age 76. Predeceased by her son, Ernest Todd; parents, Marion and William Chipman and Rita and Thomas Osbourne; and siblings, Vivian, Rita, William, Levi, Verna, Evelyn, Ruby, Maxine, and Paul. Leaving to mourn are her loving husband of almost 60 years, Ernest Day; children, Debbie (Terry); Sandy (Dawn); grandchildren, Karen (Jason), Candace (Bradley), Alexander (Lindsay); great grandchildren, Casey, Anna, Claire, and Elizabeth; siblings, Doreen, Stella, June, and Shirley; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and countless other family and friends. Marion was born into tragic circumstances on June 2, 1944, with her own mother passing away due to complications from her birth. She was raised by her grandparents and aunt and uncle. On April 12, 1961, she married Ernest Day and started her own family. She became "Nanny" to three grandchildren and "Nanny France" to every other child in her life. She was the ever-reliable caregiver, confidant, advisor, Sunday dinner cooker, two-dollar bill giver, crazy-8 player, and free taxi driver. Marion said her two-cents worth. She didn't know what a poker face was and didn't care to have one. If you lost or gained weight, she felt it her duty to point it out. She loved flowers, knitting, Amazing Grace, ice cold water, Crush soda, scratch tickets, saucy cats, and scolding you for not visiting more often. She saw value where others saw none. This is why she spent so much time in conversation with children, yard sale shopping, and trying to tame evil cats. Marion had a strong faith in the Lord and spent many hours praying for the health of others. End of life rituals were important and she believed in the peace of being welcomed into the arms of Jesus. As fate would have it, she did not get the end of life she wanted. There was no family present when she died and she could not have the wake, funeral, or burial she wanted. We struggle to cope with our grief but are comforted by the words she left us: Please don't sing sad songs for me, forget your grief and fears; For I am in a perfect place, away from pain and tears .... I'm far away from hunger, and hurt, and want, and pride; I have a place in heaven, with the Master at my side. May she finally be at peace, held in the arms of her mother; and feel the love she had on earth, now that she is in heaven.

GRAY Dr. John M. With sadness but also gratitude for a life well lived we announce the death of Dr. John M. Gray MD on 16th February, aged 94. Survived by Fiona his wife of 61 years, children Angela (Paul), Christopher (Mitra), Andrew (Laveada) and David, and grandchildren Joshua, Helen, Miles, Hoda, Emily and Charlotte. Born 11th October 1926, to Oliver and Rose Gray in Westbridgford, Nottingham, UK, and predeceased by brothers Peter, Malcolm and William. Survived by much loved sister Margaret. John's earliest role models taught him the Christian virtues of caring and humility. When, as a young man, he committed himself to faith in Jesus, it was these values that primarily shaped his dedication to a life of service. Three years after graduating from the Medical College of St. Bartholomew's Hospital London, John, at the age of 30, joined the International Grenfell Association, a Christian medical Mission that served the isolated and underserved communities of northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador. An adventurous spirit was required, as many communities could only be reached by dog team in winter and boat or floatplane in summer. During his 25 year tenure with the IGA, John played a central role in improving the quality of health care, such that, especially after construction of the regional Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital, it rivaled any across Eastern Canada. He contributed in many other ways to the welfare of the community, such as spearheading the first long term senior care facility in the region, of which its larger replacement was named in his honour. The people he served and respected, together with medical staff he worked closely with, always remained dearest to his heart. In 1981 John left the IGA to lead the development of a new geriatric division at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax Nova Scotia. He co-founded the Alzheimer's Society of N.S. to help address the devastating nature of this disease. John's life of service would not have been possible without the unwavering support of Fiona, who he first met in 1958 during her IGA volunteer service. Upon retirement in 1993, John remained on several Boards in an advisory capacity, and at home continued to share his love of gardening with Fiona, his passion for Bach and Mozart, and his joy of carpentry, building clocks and furniture for his children and grandchildren. John will be dearly missed for his skills as an Internist, his compassion for his patients, his care for the community, his love for family, his deep convictions and sense of humour. The family wishes to express their enormous gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Rockwood for his Friendship, support and care, to Dr. Dan Carver and Abbie Lane staff, the VON, Northwood Homecare, Dr. Patrick Somers, the caring staff of Bradford Hall, and especially the many friends who he so treasured. A Celebration of Life for John will be scheduled at a later date. A Facebook page "Remembering Dr. John M. Gray" will be published. Condolences may be forwarded at http://www.jasnowfuneralhome.com/   Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Also left with beautiful memories are Cherry's brother, James Midwood of Lechlade-on-Thames, England, and his children, Mark, Claire, Stephen and Frances and their families. Cherry was born in Eastbourne, England on February 24th, 1933. She spent her early years in London and at school at Loreto College in Llandudno, Wales, to which children were evacuated in 1940 when wartime bombing of London occurred during the Battle of Britain. She met Jim, the love of her life, while he and her brother James were students at Oxford. At the age of 20, she married Jim in London, at St. Mary's Church, Hamstead. From there, they began an amazing adventure, traveling in Cornwall and Devon and then aboard the Caronia, from Southampton to New York, where they honeymooned, to begin their married life in St. John's, Newfoundland. As Cherry and Jim raised their large family, love and laughter abounded at their home on Monkstown Road and their summer home at Topsail Pond. Consistent with her interest in spirituality and the search for God, Cherry was involved in many volunteer and religious groups over the years, including the Catholic Women's League, the Mercy Associates, the Gathering Place and the Janeway Hospital. The family expresses special thanks to Cherry's long-time doctor, Dr. Mercedes Penton, her caregivers Denise Hiscock and Tracey Whittle, the 4th floor staff at Tiffany Village, where she had resided for the past six years, and medical and nursing staff in the Emergency Department and 4SA, along with Fr. Francis Roche of the pastoral team, at the Health Sciences Centre. Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, a private family viewing has already taken place. A private family funeral will be held at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Friday, February 19th at 1 pm. Those who wish to attend the Funeral Mass must register with the family. For anyone not able to attend, the Funeral will be live-streamed at www.thebasilica.net   Donations in Cherry's memory can be made to the Gathering Place, the Basilica Heritage Foundation, the Janeway Hospital or Matercare International.

GREENE Thomas Joseph With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Thomas Joseph Greene, (Tom) on Friday, February 19, 2021 after a brief illness. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Madeline and Charlie, and his sisters Ann and Georgina. Leaving to mourn, his wife of almost 58 years, Florence, his 3 loving daughters, Gigi (John) Downton, Michelle Greene (Harold Guzzwell, deceased) and Jacqueline (Chris) Byrne. His pride and joy, his 5 grandchildren, Michael (Marley), Sarah Jane (Connor) and Maria Downton, and Sydney and Catherine Guzzwell; as well as his sisters Mary Sarzynski, Edwina Dizenzo, Bridie (Liam) Sneyd and Dolores Brace, and his brother Allan. Also leaving a large circle of relatives and friends including his brother in law Charlie (Joan) Furey and sister in law Sr. Marie Furey; family friend Nancy Constantine, his neighbours Gerald and Mabel Tobin and his close friends, Al Newhook and Linda and Terry Tomlinson. Tom was the kindest and most genuine man we have had the privilege of knowing, and we will not forget his generosity, his devotion to his family or his silly jokes, all of which endeared him to everyone he knew. Tom was well-known in the community. In the early 1960's, he was a proud member of HMCS Cabot Naval Reserves. He spent most of his working life cooking for others. He was a fixture at Ches's Fish & Chips in its early years and to this day, people know him from that time. Later in his career, he worked on the provincial ferries and subsequently joined the hospital system, first at St. Clare's and later at the Central Kitchen of Eastern Health, from which he retired in 2004. In his retirement years, Tom shared his love of cooking with others. He was an avid baker known for his famous "tea buns" and artfully decorated children's birthday cakes, "Cakes by Tom". He also enjoyed woodworking and made many outdoor swings and chairs. Many will remember Tom from his years of having booths at the Regatta and in later years, he loved his annual walk around the lake on Regatta Eve. He was a member of the St. Pat's alumni and always looked forward to the annual dinner. He bowled in the seniors' league, played darts on Monday night at the Knights of Columbus, swam at the Mews Center and was active in St. Teresa's Parish. He also dearly loved his canine buddy, Jack. Tom Greene was a great friend to many, an original who will never be forgotten by those who loved him. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be delayed until a later date. "Those we love don't go away. They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, always missed and forever dear."

GUEST Patsy Marie Frances (nee Lythgoe) Passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, February 19, 2021 at the age of 78. Predeceased by her husband: Howie Guest, her parents: William and Myrtis Lythgoe and her granddaughter Maggie Guest. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are sons: Tony Guest, Trevor Guest and Todd Guest; honorary daughter: Jennifer Malone-Earle; grandchildren: Alexis Guest, Morgan Guest and Lilly Guest; sisters: Helen Cove and Margaret Lythgoe; sister-in-law: Mabel Guest; and cousins: David and Marilyn Lythgoe, Derrick and Sharon Cove, Judy Guest, Kim and Jake Storey, significant others: Beverly Guest, Lori Whitten and Sandy Greig as well as other relatives and friends. Patsy was a family person. Above all else, she loved her boys and her granddaughters. She especially enjoyed the family times together. Mealtime was special to her, and, my goodness, she was a masterful cook! Her favorite mealtime phrase was 'have another scrap'. When you left her place, your stomach was full, and importantly, so was your heart. Patsy had a love of life. She enjoyed going on a 'randy', whether it was a trip across the island, around the Irish Loop or just a drive to Signal Hill. There are so many happy memories of good times, sunny days, and unexpected adventures. She also loved a good game of 120s. For years now, she has met every Sunday evening with Kathleen Williams, Mary Ridgeley, Linda Hearn, Mercedes Chafe and Catherine O'Leary to play cards and to enjoy each other's hospitality. She was a kind and caring lady. She had a long list of seniors who she visited every week. For years, she helped at the Gathering Place. She always drove with cash in the car, in the case she came across someone in need. She never asked questions. She only hoped to help others and make their day a little better. Patsy was known for being early for appointments and get togethers. During her last days, she would often stare at and talk to the ceiling as if someone were there. We think it was Howie calling her home. He wanted her home by February 20th, his final day in 2003. Wasn't it just like Patsy to arrive a day early? The family would like to send a special thanks to Kathleen Williams and Judy Furlong for their untiring help, gentleness, and good humor with Patsy over the last months. You are very loving friends, and the family cannot thank you enough. We would also like to thank Dr. Alison Hillman for being there when we needed her and her wise counsel to all in the family. And finally, and using Pat's signature sign-off to family, we say to her 'Loves ya'! For those wishing to give a donation in Patsy's memory, the family requests they be made to: GouldsCatRescue@gmail.com   Donations may be made by email transfer. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions in place, a celebration of Patsy's life will be held at a later date. Proudly born and raised in his beloved Ferryland, Brendan was a retired educator, having taught in many communities on the Southern Shore, beginning in St. Shotts, at the age of 18 years, and finishing at Baltimore High School in Ferryland. For sure, he is teaching a history lesson up in heaven. Brendan had a special fondness for the Bristol's Hope/ Harbour Grace area as he received some of his early education there and fostered treasured relationships there with the Butler and Jordan families. He was an active member of the community serving on historical and church committees. He was a sought after toast master and emcee, known for his orating abilities which he developed through participation in school plays and concerts in his youth. He also had the distinction of being the first mayor of Ferryland and having the town incorporated. For all of his accomplishments Brendan was proudest of his family. The boy from the Quarry and the girl from the Lookout built a solid foundation of love and devotion. In later years it was the simple things that he enjoyed the most: his beloved Habs, listening to his favourite records, chatting with his good friend, Vince Ryan, picking blueberries, trouting and walking through dear old Ferryland, chatting with his many friends. The family are grateful for the care and compassion shown to him by the team at 3 North West, Pleasant View Towers where he spent the last year and a half. Despite his dementia diagnosis, we take comfort in the grace and resilience Brendan displayed throughout the progression of his illness. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no visitations or funeral at this time, there will be a private family internment at Holy Family Cemetery, Ferryland and when it is safe to do so, a celebration of life will take place. KAVANAGH Tom Gordon (1938-2021) It is with sadness that we announce Tom's passing in Toronto, ON. He is pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Emma (nee Hepditch) and his parents, Thomas J. Kavanagh and Ann (nee Hammond) of Bell Island, NL. KEATING Joan Born and raised on Bell Island, NL, Joan Keating (nee Metcalfe) died peacefully at her home in St. John's, NL on February 10, 2021, aged 81. She is predeceased by her parents Leonard and Margret and brothers Jim and Robert and sisters Maureen and Madeline. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories is her loving devoted husband and caregiver of 56 years Charlie and her son and daughter, Jim (Kim) and Charlene (Bill Henderson) and grandchildren, Karoline, Ava, Madeline, Parker, and Griffin. She also leaves to mourn brothers Gordon, Bernard (Ann Marie), Edward, Blair (Loretta), Tony (Marie): her sister Cynthia (Ted), and a large circle of fantastic nieces and nephews. Joan spent her working life as an educator. Earning her teaching certificate at the age of 17, she would assume the vocation she was most associated with from 1966-1987 at the neighbouring St.Pius X Girls and Boys Schools on Elizabeth Avenue where she was Vice Principal and Principal for the majority of those years. She then became Vice Principal of Holy Heart of Mary High School before ending her career as Principal of St. Peters in Mt. Pearl in 1993. Joan touched and shaped the lives of thousands. In retirement you could surely expect to find her surrounded by former students for a serendipitous chat in the walkways at the mall. It was in those encounters where she learned of her former students accomplishments that she enjoyed the most. Joan was also a wife, mother and grandmother who gave unconditional fierce love and you always knew she would be in your corner. She was a soulmate to Charlie, the guiding light to her childern and the source of endless hugs to her grandchildren. She could seemingly all at once fill a room with laugher, captivate its curious and command its mischievous. As family matriarch she was the rock that all would cling to in time of trouble and circle in times of joy. She loved music and travel and the company of dear friends. As Alzheimer's tried to weave its unpredictable path through the fibres of Joan's closest relationships she emerged time and time again as the one giving the lessons never ceding the lectern - to the end. Joan Keating B.Ed, M.A, M.Ed, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life and inurnment will occur after the pandemic restrictions have lifted in summer of 2021, at this time family and friends are encouraged to attend the event. Stan lived in Mount Pearl but his true sanctuary was the summer home he and Mary spent a lifetime building in Western Bay. It is there that they both enjoyed the vacation time when their family was young and in later years the solitude and relaxation as empty nesters. It was a little piece of Paradise and Stan took great pride in having built it. Stan had a very active social life and a multitude of friends throughout the province who will miss him at the parties, card games and hunting trips. Cremation has already taken place and due to COVID-19 restrictions burial and celebration of life will be held on a date to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations gratefully accepted in Harold's name to First United Church, Mount Pearl or The Gathering Place. Visit www.barretts.ca to leave a message of condolence to the family. God looked around his garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best.

PARSONS Eric Donald The village of Freshwater is celebrating the life of long-time villager Eric Donald Parsons who passed away on February 27, 2021 at 90 years of age. He was predeceased by his wife: Marjorie Marie (nee Badcock) in 1988, daughter: Cathy Ann in 2018 and long-time companion: Yvonne in 2020; parents: Shenstone and Mary; brothers: Bill (Nellie), Reg, and Dave (Jean). Lovingly remembered by his family: Donald and Matilda, Big Lake, BC; Gerry and Shirley, Shoal Harbour, Marie and Bill, Calgary, AB; grandchildren: Christopher, Warren, Keshia, Lucas, Bethany, Rebecca, and Matthew; great-grandson: Audric; brothers: Sidney (Joan), John (Mary), and Frank (Eloise); sisters-in-law: Joyce and Elaine; brother-in-law: Gerald; nieces: Sharon, Sandra, and Susan; nephews: Darryl, Duane, Robert, Kent, Craig, Stephen, both Bills and nieces: Allison, Sylvia, Jean, June, both Elizabeths; special friend: Beverly Jacobs and many remaining "family & friends." He will be fondly remembered for the simple things in life - his quiet, steady faith; hearty and abundant hospitality; delight in storytelling and exuberant recitations; enjoying the outdoors; keen interest in the health benefits of medicinal properties, and most of all sharing his love for his family and friends by doing whatever he could for as long as he could. Predeceased by his mother (nee Mary Harriet Noel) when he was 9 years of age, his working life started young. In his formative years, he was sheep shearer, fisherman, and camp cook. In his early adult years he became road builder, carpenter, and miner. In his retirement hobby years he was a berry and dandelion picker, vintner and preserver, fly fisher, church protector, and ā€¦ bell ringer. (If you were lucky enough, you may have even received a personal training session on how to "properly ring" the church bell.) For those who enjoy, and follow the salmon, you know that the salmon is a fighter. It perseveres and never gives up! Salmon are born in freshwater, and then migrate out to the ocean. When it's time to spawn, they head back to their home in freshwater. Ancient Celts believed the salmon had great wisdom. Like the salmon, he too had great wisdom and perseverance. He fished for them, canned them, boiled them, baked them, stuffed them, and poached them. And as many of his family & friends know, he enjoyed smoking salmon most of all. A real treat was when you were the lucky recipient of a care package with dad's very special salmon ā€¦ smoked just for you. He had a great memory too, especially for reciting poetry, some of which he wrote himself. Perhaps his great ability to recite poems well into his later years (some of his favorites being "Lord Nelson's Prayer" and "The Smoke Room on the Kyle") was due to his steady consumption of ā€¦ you guessed it ā€¦ salmon! Due to pandemic restrictions, a private committal service will take place on Monday, March 1 at Freshwater United Church Cemetery. In celebration of a life well lived, donations may be made to the Freshwater CBN War Memorial Fund, c/o David Moriarty, Site 2A, Comp 21, RR1, Carbonear, NL, A1Y 1C6. As you reflect upon his well-lived life, we hope you partake in a "milk & honey" before you retire for the evening. According to Eric (often fondly referred to as "the Viking"), ā€¦ it's the best medicine going. Cheers everyone!

POWER Clare June 20, 1925 - February 26, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Clare Power, aged 95 years young. Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Ted Power, her parents Tom and Hanna Fennessey, her brother, Monseigneur Jim Fennessey, and sisters Joan Fennessey, Mary McGee. Leaving to mourn with many happy memories are her sister Isabel Fennessey, and her ten children: Allan, Peggy Connors (Wayne), Paul, Ted, Gerry (Carol Ann), Chris (Donna), Craig (Kristine), Susan Tobin (Norm), Jim (Dianne), Gord (Donna) and her grandchildren: Jennifer, Heather, Mark, Maria, Ashley, Christina and Kim, Anna, Lauren, Liam, Joel and Katie, Justin and Vanessa, and twelve great grandchildren. Mom lived a full and busy life in a home full of friends and family. Raising a family of ten children was no small feat. She had a great sense of humor, a warm heart, and made three meals for dinner for us to choose from for supper every night! Some say she had to as we often brought our friends home for supper to share a meal. She looked after all of us, our friends, our pets, and she and dad's friends who visited often. Mom was an avid bridge player and could put out both a meal and great game of bridge on a Friday night. She played in international bridge tournaments with Dad, traveling the world and catching a game wherever they could in various cities. She was also a very religious person who made sure we never missed mass on Sundays, making us take our friends if they happened to be over. She loved the heat and traveling to warm climates, and if she couldn't get away, the heat in the house made up for it; allowing her to grow oranges! We love you Mom, and will miss you forever

RICHARDSON Arthur Charles (Charlie) It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sweet Charlie on February 18th, 2021. As would be his nature, he passed away, as he would say - "kicking and screaming"; yet with dignity and the knowledge that he had lived his life to the fullest. He loved life and held onto every morsel of living. He is predeceased by his parents Priscilla and Arthur Charles Richardson. Left with cherished memories are the loves of his life; his wife and best friend Anne, his sons Christopher, Jody and Chad; stepson Alex Noseworthy (Meghan), grandchildren Ally (Patrick), Hunter, Luca and Maddie; his brother Sid (Sheila) in Australia, sister Gail (Whayne Chappell) in Victoria B.C, his mother-in-law Loretta Healey, and the entire Healey family who loved him deeply and made him their own. He will forever be held in our hearts, never to be forgotten by a wide circle of family and friends who respected his accomplishments, who felt better just being around his happy self, and who laughed often at the tall tales he would tell. He loved to "pull your leg". Charlie lived his life with humility, kindness, humour, and consideration for others. Always ready to chat with or help a stranger, he easily made lifelong friends, who remember him for his amazing sense of humour, positive outlook, his infectious energy and his warm and ready (impish) smile. He loved spending time in the kitchen effortlessly whipping up amazing dinners, and you were lucky if you got invited to his annual flipper dinner. And then rounded off with a good game of cards, a night made especially good if he won. That is who Charlie was. As an award-winning business owner of a successful auto dealership, and food franchise, Charlie was known to be a motivating, fair and generous employer. Always at the center of his life, what was most important, was his family and friends, where no sacrifice was too much. The accomplishment he was most proud of was that of being a thoughtful, loving husband, and a warm and caring father. Charlie received the best of care from his medical team and we'd like to thank Dr Chaudhary Ahmad, Dr Mary Wells, Dr Anna Smith, Dr Louise Rogers, Dr Carman Giacomantonio (Halifax) and clinical pharmacist Andrew Collins who did so much to help us. As well a special thank you to Marie-Josee Brown (MJ) for her skilful guidance, compassion and support. Thank you to all those who called often to chat with Charlie, who snow ploughed the driveway, offered words of encouragement and held the space for him with deepest affection. Your thoughtfulness made him feel very special and very loved. To the management and staff of The Residence at Littledale where Anne and Charlie resided in his final days.... Thank You. Your compassionate care, professionalism; your anticipation of, and attendance to our every need were outstanding. It is the values that Charlie lived by, and the love he shared with all who knew him, most especially his family, that are his legacy. Words cannot do justice to the impact of Charlie's presence and the reach of his open heart. Quite simply, Charlie, we will miss you. Cremation has taken place with a service to be held at a later date. Donations to The Gathering Place in Charlie's memory would be greatly appreciated. ROCKWOOD Robert Ernest Passed peacefully away at Glenbrook Lodge, St. John's, on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the age of 79. He leaves to mourn his sister, Susan Khaladkar and her husband Vikas, niece Aleigh (Aaron), nephew Jeremy (Ashlie), two grand-nephews (Isaac and Odin) and one grand-niece (Eliana). Predeceased by his parents, Walter and Seneth Rockwood and his younger brother, David. Robert was born in 1941 in Woody Point, Bonne Bay, when his father was with the Newfoundland Ranger Force. The family was transferred to Nain, Labrador, and it was there that Robert contracted whooping cough / meningitis that caused him to lose his hearing. His younger brother, David, died of the same disease. There were no schools for deaf children in pre-confederation Newfoundland, so the family moved to North Carolina, where they had relatives, and Bob could attend a school for the deaf. When he was 10, the family decided to return to Newfoundland and take their chances with public school. Bob was an avid reader and did well, graduating from high school in St. John's when he was 17. He then attended Memorial University for a year before going to Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., where he obtained a B. Comm. He worked for Statistics Canada in Ottawa as an economic analyst until he retired. Throughout his life, Bob was involved with deaf organizations and deaf culture. He also enjoyed playing chess and outdoor activities like skating and canoeing. He realized his dream of buying a sailboat after he retired but did not achieve his grander dream of sailing around the world. He moved back to Newfoundland in 2012. In 2016, he suffered a stroke and had to move into assisted living accommodations. A second stroke in 2019 made it difficult for him to speak or write, but he was still able to sign. He hated being dependent but appreciated the care he received at Cambridge Estates and Glenbrook Lodge. We would like to thank the staff at those homes, where Bob spent the last few years of his life, for their care and attention. Special thanks go to the team of interpreters from Newfoundland and Labrador Association of the Deaf - Myles Murphy, Debbie, Denika, Heather, Sheilagh and Marguerite. These people accompanied Bob to many appointments over the past few years and gave him a voice in his own medical care. We thank them for their professionalism, dedication and, most of all, their friendship. Cremation has taken place. Donations to the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of the Deaf would be welcome. Pre-deceased by his supportive parents, Nelson & Doris Rowsell of Harrington Harbour; father-in-law William (Bill) Byrne of Howley, NL and brother-in-law Darryl Kelly. Remaining to cherish the warmth of his spirit: wife and partner of 45 years Kerri Rowsell (Byrne); loving children: Heather (Corey Johnson), Glen (Nicolle Hamlyn), and Julia (Jesse Dumas); and adoring grandchildren: Jake, Ethan, Leah, and Annie. Sharing his memory: his brothers (and sisters-in-law), Keith (Ann Williams), and Andrew (Helena Monger); mother-in-law Theresa Byrne; siblings-in-law Debbie Roche, Todd and Greg Byrne (Tobi). As well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and a large circle of colleagues and acquaintances. Lanny grew up in the close knit community of Harrington on the Quebec Lower North Shore, and attended high school in Sherbrooke, QC. He picked apples for Rockefeller in New York to earn pocket money, eventually joining the Canadian Coast Guard as a cadet and serving as deckhand on one of the first offshore support vessels in Canada. He attended the Marine Institute in St. John's, finishing as a Master Mariner in his mid 20's, while supporting his young family and serving with the CCG's Atlantic fleet. Allan served in all Bridge Officer positions up to and including Captain. He enjoyed his time spent in the Arctic on the Franklin, and, when he eventually moved from his duties as Captain to land-based duties, at Iqaluit in Ice Operations Support. In St. John's he continued his CCG career in a number of roles including Director of Ice Operations and an Area Director with Fisheries and Oceans. Not one to emphasize titles, his focus was always simple - get the job done. Retiring in 2011, Allan contributed to his community as a Red Cross volunteer and was a long time member of the YMCA. He enjoyed fitness and friendship through recreational ice hockey, and sessions playing guitar and mandolin. Allan could also be found taking his morning "coffee runs" driving to Middle Cove to observe the sea. Needless to say, Allan enjoyed the ride. Held tight in our hearts, never to be forgotten, by a wide circle of family and friends who respected his accomplishments, benefitted from his wisdom and laughed often at the tales he would tell. Words cannot do justice to the impact of his presence and the glow of his legacy. We love him, always. A celebration of a life well lived will be held when times permit. Donations can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation as a gift in memory of Allan F. Rowsell.

RYALL Marie With broken hearts we announce the unexpected death of Marie Ryall, age 82, who passed away in St. Clare's Hospital on February 14, 2021. Mom was a light in many lives, but she shone the brightest in the company of her family. She has left to grieve her only child Rhonda Layman (Keith) Lower Sackville NS. Also in mourning are her cherished grandchildren, Adam Layman, Brampton Ont, Mark Layman (Justine Halliday) Lower Sackville, NS and Julia Shrubb (James) in Petawawa Ont. She was a proud and happy Great Gram to her precious little ones Sam, Peter, Jack, Aggie, and Theo. Marie was a tireless and dedicated volunteer, giving her abundant time and energy to many organizations which included Agnes Pratt Nursing Home, Veterans Pavilion, Pastoral Care at St. Clare's, various seniors programs and more through the decades. She enjoyed the social interactions and the large group of friends that grew around her. Marie had a unique way of making everyone she met feel special. In addition to her family, of whom she was very proud, Marie's countless daily acts of kindness to all she touched will be her legacy. Living and loving life to the fullest, she found joy in simple pleasures. Music and dancing were favourite activities as well as walking and bowling. She loved line dancing, all the more because it embarrassed her son-in-law. She delighted in a good game of cards or rummoli, as evidenced by the tubs of nickels that we just finished putting into 95 rolls. Nature called out to her, strolling a sunny path, listening to birds and babbling brooks. She always looked forward to a picnic or weekend in the country. She was a great listener and a loyal confidant. Marie will be missed by many good friends, but none more so than her Golden Girls, Barbara, Lorraine, Barbara, and especially Joyce Penney. Their loving friendship was a pillar in her life. The secrets of their many slumber parties will forever remain hidden in the bottom a wine bottle, never to be uncorked. Mom was predeceased by her fiercely devoted mother Mildred Westcott, who raised mom as a single parent long before that term was even coined. Very special thanks to Dr. Farrell and Nurse Sarah at St. Clare's, whose compassion will never be forgotten. The wretched pandemic has made it impossible to fulfil Marie's plan for her own Celebration at present, but hopefully it will occur later in the year. Arrangements through Caul's Funeral Home, where online condolences can be shared, or send email to marieryall@hotmail.com   Donations in Marie's memory are welcome at a charity of your choice. But truly, her wish would be for your kindness in the world. "If there ever comes a day when we cannot be together, keep me in your heart. I'll stay there forever." From Winnie the Pooh

He will also be missed by his stepdaughter, Sarah Nugent (Tyler) and granddaughters Sydney and Shelby, as well as sisters-in-law Loretta Forsyth, Joan Bursey, and Eleanor Bennett. Born in Moreton's Harbour, Notre Dame Bay, the home of his ancestors for two centuries, to Lloyd Small and Dorothy (Boyd), Larry killed his first and only seal at the age of fifteen: the gaff was a dogwood selected from the woods by his father and the hook crafted by the community blacksmith. Larry trained as a teacher eventually going on to complete a PhD in Newfoundland folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. All of his field research was conducted in Newfoundland outport communities where he did extensive work on various aspects of Newfoundland culture. Larry made many friendships during his years teaching folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland, colleagues and students alike, and he spent many a happy afternoon in the Breezeway bar. He loved nothing more than spending time sharing stories and music with his cherished friends, new and old. Two of his best-loved publications were the sealing anthology Haulin' Rope & Gaff and his collection of poems Around the Red Land. An excellent cook, he was a lover of long reflective walks in the woods, art, and music. Larry was a truly trusting and devoted friend to many. He was always willing to sit at the table and listen to anyone who needed comfort, and many will miss that experience. A special thanks to the staff at the Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion long-term care home in Carbonear who took such good care of Larry during the last year and a half of his life. Due to ongoing Covid concerns, a celebration of Larry's life will take place at a later date when travel restrictions are lifted. WIGHT Lilian Meta (Eason) Feb. 24,1924 - Feb. 24, 2021 Lily passed peacefully away on her 97th birthday after a full life filled with love, grace, travel and family. She was predeceased by her husband, friend and confidant of 52 years, N. Ray Wight. Mom was a young teacher when she met our Dad then a school vice-principal. They loved to travel, spend weekends in their trailer, garden, berry pick and attend concerts at the Arts and Cultural Center. Mom was an accomplished pianist having learned to play at an early age from her mother and instilled a love of music in each of us. Mom had a deep abiding and quiet faith in God and prayed daily for her family. Her love, energy and concern will be missed by her children; Marilyn Andrews (Lewis), Keith (Joan), Lorne (Elaine) and Gerry (Ai Lien). Mom and Dad were happiest spending time with family and loved the noise and activity of their grand-children. Grandma's 10 grandchildren will miss visits and encouraging chats with her; Brad (Nicholle), Mark, Todd (Crystal), Kathryn (John), Julia, Melissa (Matt), Jennifer (Kyle), Ryan (Remi), Natalie and Christine. Her 13 great-grand children were cherished by Lily and she lovingly wrote cards and knit Christmas gifts for each of them: Maren, Teagan, Ethan, Lily, Kate, Luke, James, Lydia, Maeve, Noah, Kody, Alexa and Shay. As a child of Salvation Army Officers she lived in 13 different communities in Newfoundland growing up. Moving so much meant her best friends were her siblings and as each one passed away, part of Mom diminished as well. She was predeceased by her brothers Granville and Ernie and by her sisters Vida Cummings, Faye Hiscock and Evelyn Pritchett. She is survived by her brother Major Lloyd Eason (Ruth). For the past 20 years Mom spent considerable time with her daughter, and best friend Marilyn, at church events, twacking, knitting and chatting. Mom loved life and being active, her life was full and ended surrounded with love and no regrets. The family is very appreciative of the tremendous care and compassion shown our mother during her years at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers a donation in the name of her grandson Mark Andrews, can be made to L'Arche Avalon.
