Born in the remote Newfoundland out port of Badger's Quay, Herb left at the age of 16 to pursue higher education in St. John's and later Halifax and Ottawa. He was intelligent, energetic, curious, and very down to earth, which lead him to a distinguished career in early computing and telecommunications in government and business. In his later years, Herb devoted himself to the community of Change Islands, its future, its people, and the preservation of their culture, back in his home province of Newfoundland, where his heart always lay. He continued to positively affect those around him with his warm presence, exuberant personality, great sense of humour and love of music after moving to Canmore, AB to live at Morningstar House in Origin at Spring Creek. His love of fun and all things silly endeared him to the staff. Herb's family would like to extend our most heartfelt and sincere thanks to the wonderful, loving, kind, and dedicated health care team at Morningstar House who made Herb's final years of life as meaningful, fun and love-filled as possible, despite his advancing Alzheimer's disease. GAUDET, Paul Edward
Passed on: February 9th, 2019

It is with great sadness and heart-breaking sorrow that the family of Paul Edward Gaudet announce his passing on February 9th, 2019 in the warmth of his home "Dunbrody" and loving arms of his family.
Paul was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, the second eldest and oldest boy to Gerry and Imelda into what grew into a beautiful and caring family of eight children. Both his parents were incredibly loving, devoted and proud of all their children. His Mom, a registered nurse, provided the nurturing, love, "gentle" guidance and discipline needed to raise such a large family. As an engineer and architect, his Dad was his hero and mentor.
Education was paramount in the Gaudet household and at the age of 14, Paul left Moncton and attended high school in Rigaud, Québec and Cégep at Petit Séminaire in Québec City. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from University of New Brunswick followed by a MBA from the Université de Moncton. Paul started his career with Moneco Engineering as a site engineer on the construction of Norsk Hydro's Magnesium Plant in Becancour, Quebec. That was where he crossed paths with Moya and his fate was set. Paul married Moya in 1990 and lured by the opportunities of Newfoundland's burgeoning oil and gas sector, moved to St. John's. There Paul worked with BFL on the construction of the Hibernia Platform in Bull Arm and went on to support subsequent offshore projects through Magna Services. In 2005, after a short (and cold) stint in Labrador, Moya convinced Paul to join forces with her and nurture the seeds that she had planted with Pan Maritime Energy Services in the LNG sector in Doha, Qatar. Paul did more than simply nurture, what was only intended to be six-month stint became 12-years providing many an adventure for the whole family. Qatar became the family's second home, where Paul befriended many expats and Qataris alike. He had a dedicated and loyal staff in Doha and the folks that joined his team became a part of his family. Paul was dedicated and committed, and his judgement was guided by his strong morals of fairness, honesty and respect. He had a circle of close mates from the Doha Golf club and connected with other very special folks from his many miles of cycling. He felt particularly honored with the brotherly bond he shared with his Qatar friends, in particular Sheikh Abdulla and Bader. They enjoyed many a cigar and soufflé under the beautiful skies of a Doha evening.
Home was and will always be where Paul's heart lies. He had an incredible group of friends with whom he shared his passion for cooking, cycling, skiing, golfing and most importantly, the fine wines from his cellar. In particular his "beau-frère" Pierre Gauvreau with whom he shared an occasional fondness for a wee dram of single malt scotch, family friend Mike Madden, a cherished addition in all adventures and celebration and his childhood friend, Dr. Rod Martin who was by his side supporting him throughout his illness with his love, hugs and guidance.
Paul was never far from his best friend and dear wife Moya with whom he shared many passions especially a shared love of adventures on the family boat the "Moya C", skiing Marble Mountain and cycling hills from Cape Spear to the Prophet Job's tomb in Salalah, Oman. His daughters Marah and Mia, who along with Moya were his everything. Like his Dad, he was a devoted and loving father wanting nothing more for his daughters than to find meaning and happiness in life. He cared deeply for his Mom and Dad and was a big brother and friend to all his brothers and sisters.
Paul leaves treasured memories to his wife Moya Cahill, his precious daughters Marah and Mia, his mother Imelda of Moncton, siblings Clare (Mitchell) of Toronto, Marcia (Patrice) of Kingston, Jamaica, Charles (Debbie) of Moncton, Maura (Gerard) of Moncton, Anne (Darren) of Saint John, Marc (Jamie) of Halifax, Julien (Jill) of Moncton, his brother-in-law Fred (Doreen) of St. John's, sister-in-law Nora (Pierre) and many nieces, nephews and friends whom he cared for deeply.
Paul is predeceased by his dear father Gerald J. Gaudet, and parents-in-law Nora and Gerard Cahill of whom he loved deeply.
Many thanks to the dedicated and compassionate staff of 4NorthA, Doctors Engelbrecht, Holmes, Armstrong, McIsaac, Greenland, Downton, Parsons, Rorke, Fardy, Dalton, the staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, family doctor Dan Malone, and the team from Community Heath. As well we commend Dr. Jacques and his team at the Clinique Neuro-Outaouais in Gatineau for their ongoing work in immunotherapy for GBMs and thank them for the opportunity to be a part of the research. Heartfelt thanks to Anne and Bob of Caregivers for providing such incredible nursing support over Paul's last few weeks. Connie, Lisa, Trevor and Debbie enabled us to provide the comfort and care for Paul to remain in the comfort of his home embraced by the love of his family.
A Celebration of Paul's life will be held at Carnell's Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road at 3 pm on Thursday, February 14, 2019. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 12th from 7-9 pm, Wednesday, February 13th, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. HOLMES, Derek
Derek Holmes
lived and played hard, right up to the buzzer late Sunday night. He was 59. Born in Brighton, UK but raised in St. John's, Derek was a family man, a husband, a father of 4, a son, a brother, an uncle, a muralist, a creator, a leader in the arts and film community, a hard-working provider, an athlete, a dedicated coach and mentor, a hardcore Leafs fan, a loyal and intuitive friend, a fun-loving party animal and grown up punk who defied definition. Derek's roles in film and television were not always out front, but those with whom he worked will tell you he was a star. A true team player. In the wider St. John's arts community, his colourful murals connected people with the past through a larger than life sense of presence. Beyond his artistic genius, Derek was an exceptional and natural athlete. A savage hockey and softball player. Tall, slim and competitive. The silent Captain on every team. He took great pride in coaching and mentoring and his passion for sport was infectious. The best coaches are those who teach without the student even realizing. That was Derek. He saw hockey as a metaphor for life. In his final competition against the big C, Derek played like it was 1-1, right down to the end of the third period. How you accept victory and loss was extremely important to Derek. He lived true to his favourite piece of life and game advice - 'humble in victory, gracious in defeat'. He will be forever loved and adored by his family: his wife Fionnuala, his 4 children, Krissy, Tracy, Ciaran and Orla, his siblings Brian, Michelle, Ted, and his father Michael. He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth (d. 2017). He will be greatly missed by his wider complicated and beautiful family. His amazing cast of friends. Da hockey b'ys. The sports community. His co-workers. Visitation is open to the public Thursday, Feb. 7th from 12-9 pm at Caul's Funeral Home on LeMarchant Road. All are also welcome to join and share in a Celebration of Life for Derek on Friday night at The Wonderbolt Space, 72 Harbour Drive, Eastern Edge Gallery entrance, after 7pm. His love for family was #1. Those wishing to, can help provide for Derek's junior team, Ciaran and Orla.

It is with profound sadness we announce the death of Stanley Frank Melloy, the afternoon of February 7th, peacefully at home with family by his side. Stan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose family were his pride and joy. He was dearly loved and admired by his children, David (Brenda Smith), Joanne (Ralph Webster), five grandchildren, Kelly (JP Berger), Will Melloy, Scott, Marc and Kate Webster and three great granddaughters. Stan was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ellen, in September 2014. The youngest boy of ten children, Stan was born in Grand John, Newfoundland, and moved with his family to Grand Bank, at the age of eight. Grand Bank provided the first opportunity to attend school and he graduated six years later. Stan knew early on that the life of a fisherman was not his goal and he joined the Royal Air Force in 1940 serving as a Navigator in Mosquito aircraft. Stan was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valour and courage while flying in active duty against the enemy. When he returned to Grand Bank in 1945 on leave, he met the love of his life, the lady who would become his future wife, and subsequently retired from active duty with the RAF, to follow his heart. Fulfilling his dream of pursing an education, Stan moved to Toronto, with Ellen close behind and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1948. He joined IAC (Industrial Acceptance Corporation) in 1949 where he had a dynamic and successful career. He raised his family in the Town of Mount Royal, until he relocated IAC to Toronto in 1972, a city he loved. Stan became President in 1976 and was instrumental in instigating significant changes to the Canadian Bank Act leading to the conversion of IAC to the Continental Bank of Canada in 1976 when he was appointed CEO and Chairman. Stan was a member of the Business Council on National Issues and served as Chairman of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce from 1984-1986. An astute businessman, natural leader and keen strategist, Stan was also an accomplished bridge player and avid golfer, playing at Royal Montreal, Lambton Golf and Country Club, Toronto Golf Club and Shaughnessy Golf Club in Vancouver, as well as TPC Prestancia in Sarasota and Desert Island Golf Club in Rancho Mirage. An ardent competitor Stan was known to sink many match winning putts and brilliantly shot his age at 75! He was a voracious reader and possessed a strong set of values. Stan was intelligent, sincere, loyal, funny, wise and always savoured a good political or social debate and a martini with a twist of orange. He cherished his family and friends and was blessed with a wonderful life built on a foundation of love, respect, honesty, kindness, responsibility and hard work. Always a gentleman, charming and gallant, Stan will be missed deeply by his family and all those whose lives he touched. A special thanks to Ana Alayan, our angel, wonderful soul and companion for her caring, loving and compassionate ways. A celebration of life will be held at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, Saturday May 25th 3:30 -5:30pm.

MURTHY, Narasimha T.N. (Tom)
Published: February 23, 2019
Born: May 08, 1940
Passed: February 15, 2019
Taverekere Nagappa Narasimha (Tom) Murthy
began his cosmic journey on Feb 15th, 2019 in his 78th year. He passed peacefully away at his home in St. John's surrounded by family and friends. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Nagappa and Jayama, his sister Yamuna, and his brother Krishna Swamy. He is survived by his eldest sister, Jaysheela. From Tumkur, by way of Demark, to his destination, Newfoundland, Tom created beautiful friendships all along his path. He embraced the Newfoundland culture when he arrived in 1968 and as always, added his own special flavor. While working in Springdale, he met his first wife, Helen Colbourne. Together they had two daughters, Bharathi Natasha and Deva Sara. In 1980 he returned to India and married his life partner, Prema, also a native of Karnataka. In their 39 years together they had one son, Bhasker Chandra, and raised all three children as one family. Tom's professional life was truly shaped by the land and the sea. Originally prospecting in the wilds of Labrador he explored many careers from door to door sales to property management. He then found himself tossing around on foreign trawlers on the good ole Grand Banks as a fisheries observer. Forced to retire early due to an injury, Tom spent the last segment of his life reflecting, exploring and sharing his spirituality. Although we will all miss his smile, laugh, courage and vigor for life, we take comfort in knowing of the countless souls he has touched. Tom was an amazing man and gave us all a higher ideal to aspire to. A memorial was held to celebrate his life at Caul's Funeral Home on Feb 17th, 2019. Donations can be made in his memory to the Manjari Sankurathri Memorial Foundation (MSMF) at www.msmf.ca. Our family would like to thank all those who have reached out to us during this time. Our heartfelt thanks also go out to Tom's health care team who provided him such great care.

Published: February 23, 2019
Passed: February 19, 2019

Passed peacefully away at the Palliative Care Unit of the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, NS, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, Anthony Geoffrey Tooton (Geoff), aged 67, of St. John's, Newfoundland. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories the love of his life, wife of 44 years Jo-Anne (McGrath); his parents, Raymond and Catherine (Wyatt); son Anthony; daughter Allison Himmelman and son-in-law Stephen, granddaughters Clare and Leah, and grandson Nate; brother Frank (Carol); sisters Judith Tooton Pratt (the late Robert Pratt), Margot Bourne (John); brothers-in-law John McGrath (Eleanor), Jerome McGrath (Debbie); and sisters-in-law Patricia Kelly (Noel), Alice Donovan (Mike) and Diane McGrath (the late Joseph McGrath); as well as a wide circle of other relatives and friends especially dear friend Sharon Grant. Geoff immersed himself in life and actively participated in a wide variety of educational, commercial and community activities. He was educated at Bishop Feild College, Ridley College, Queen's University and, in later years earned his MBA from Athabasca University. After entering the family photo business, Tooton's Limited, Geoff settled on a career in business. He oversaw the growth of Tooton's throughout Newfoundland and Labrador as well as in Nova Scotia. Upon the demise of the traditional photo industry, Geoff held a number of public and private sector positions with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Irving Oil Limited, Convergys CMG Canada Limited Partnership and the Business Development Bank of Canada. During that time, he rose to simultaneously serve as President of both the St. John's Board of Trade and the Rotary Club of St. John's. He also served as the Canadian National Chair and International Trustee of Photo Marketing Association International and sat on the Board of Governors of Ridley College, St. Catharines, Ontario. He was also involved in several other organizations, including the Canadian Cancer Society and was a co-op education advisor to the Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Education. Geoff had a lifelong love of music and piano. He was a member of the St. John's Athletics Association and ran several marathons. He was continuously in awe of Newfoundland and Labrador's striking scenery, especially when hiking the East Coast Trail. In 2016 Geoff and Jo-Anne relocated to Halifax to start a new phase of their lives including being closer to their growing family. There is something magical in being part of one's next generation of birth and development, which they did not want to miss, and the love and bond that developed between Geoff and his three grandchildren was certainly a special one.
