REID, Wallace Arthur Sr.- Born April 25, 1927, Wallace
Arthur Reid Sr. loved the outdoors. He was raised in Fairhaven,
Newfoundland, without electricity, but with tremendous amounts of love
from his father and mother. Even into his late seventies Wallace described
this period as a wonderful, idyllic existence.
Wallace moved to Bell Island, Newfoundland during the "dirty thirties" where
he worked in a small general store, trading his labor for room and board. Because
of this arrangement Wallace couldn't attend school, and he yearned for something
different. He broke the bonds of British citizenship in 1944 by joining his older
sister in New Canaan, CT (Newfoundland was British until 1949). Wallace worked
hard as a farm hand in New Canaan and did well.
In 1945, at the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served four
years in Germany, attaining the rank of Sergeant in the military police. Wallace
guarded German prisoners of war and he dated a Jewish girl who had been protected
by a Christian family during the war. Her family from Nuremburg had all been
murdered in the concentration camps. These first-hand experiences caused Wallace
to develop an affinity and sense of compassion for the Jewish people, which he
communicated years later to his own children.
Wallace was troubled by the segregation of black people in the United States,
but he remained a patriot to the very end of his life despite such imperfections,
and he regularly marched in the Veterans' Day parade in New Canaan. He built
a life out of nothing.
He learned carpentry under the GI Bill, married Millicent Farrell from Bell Island,
and raised two children in an idyllic family environment in New Canaan.
Wallace was a beloved local figure, with many friends, loving neighbors and business
associates, and he sponsored many Canadian family members into the United States
to start a new life. Divorced in the early 1970's, Wallace returned to Newfoundland
as a naturalized U.S. citizen. There he married Beatrice May, and for the next
thirty-one years Wallace and Beatrice enjoyed a peaceful and loving marriage;
they lived in Newfoundland, Edmonton, and Chase B.C. during these years. Wallace
used his carpentry skills to build a comfortable life.
Despite all the setbacks and life's trials, Wallace always persevered and became
a role model for those around him. Wallace and Beatrice moved to Mercer Island,
WA in February 2005 to be with Wallace's son and daughter, Wallace Reid Jr. (Wally)
of Mercer Island and Donna Watson of Seattle. Donna and Wally enjoyed two joyous
and peaceful years with Wallace and Beatrice, together reuniting and sharing
their lives in a way they had not experienced for some time.
Wallace's heart stopped after a surgery on February 20, 2007,
a surgery to deal with severe arterial sclerosis. Wallace had smoked for fifty-three
years. He had quit cold-turkey some fifteen years earlier for the express purpose
of living long enough to see his children and grandchildren grow up. Wallace
had the strength of character to make such radical changes in his life. In this
way he challenged those around him to constantly improve their own lives.
Wallace will be missed by many people throughout the United States and Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Reid of Mercer Island, his son Wally Reid
of Mercer Island, his daughter Donna Watson of Seattle, his sister Winnie Morden
of Guelph, Ontario, and by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Wallace
was a beloved figure in both his immediate and extended families, and while his
physical presence will be missed, his spirit will live on for many years in those
he loved and touched.
