Antle, Emma Doris (nee Carter) Passed away December 8, 1999, at the age of 74, wife of Edgar Antle.  Left to mourn are three sisters; Mrs. Grace Growbridge, Mount Pearl; Sophie Carter and Effie Malfred Carter, Mount Pearl, two brothers: Hector and wife Jean, Wabush, Labrador and Eric and wife Mildred, St. John's.  The Funeral will take place in Kitchener, Ontario. **

Balsom, Marguerite (nee Avery) Passed peacefully away at the Dr. G.B. Barron, John Patrick Passed peacefully away on Monday, December 6, 1999 at the Grace Hospital, St. John's.  John Barron Sr., of Whitbourne, aged 86 years.  Predeceased by his wife Rose.  Survived by eight sons; John Jr.,; William (Sarah); Cyril; Gerald (Cindy); Kevin; Ben (Jean); Darry; Greg (Wanda); six daughters; Doreen, Aggie (John); Marion (Joe); Theresa; Debbie; Ernestine (Bill);  31 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; one brother Peter; three sisters; Maude; Margaret; and Rhonda.  Resting at Holloway's Funeral Home, Cabot Ave., Whitbourne.  Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund.  Date and time to to be announced.** 

Benson, Terrence Passed away suddenly as the result of the tragic helicopter accident, on December 3, 1999, Terry Benson, aged 43 years.  Leaving to mourn are his loving parents Ernest and Verna Benson; brothers; Ern (Nancy Squires); sister Judy (Wallace Lockyer); nieces:Jody Benson and Amanda Lockyer; nephews Adam Benson and Robert Lockyer; grandfather Newman Benson; special friends; Brian and Beverly Merrill and  Iwon Kozka  of Vancouver, Mark and Marilyn Hennebury of Ottawa, Gary and Georgina Udle, Pat and Cynthia Barren, and families, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.  Visitation at Barrett's Funeral Home, 1081 Topsail Rd, on Tuesday, December 14, 1999, pending arrival from Calgary.  Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Terry's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Bishop, E. John (Jack) A member of Masonic Lodge, Heart's Content # 1275. Passed away suddenly at the Carbonear General Hospital on Tuesday, December 28, 1999, Jack Bishop of Cavendish, in his 88th year.  Left to mourn his loving wife Elizabeth (Lizzie George) of 57 years; one son; Max (Patsy); daughter Judy Smith (Howard): five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;  three brothers;  two sisters; and a large circle of other relatives and many friends.  Resting at the Church of the Good Sheppard, Cavendish from were the Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 31, 1999 at 2 p.m.  Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Cavendish.  No flowers by request.  As expressions of sympathy donations in his memory gratefully accepted at the Church of the Good Sheppard, Cavendish.  Funeral arrangements entrusted to  Warren's Funeral Home, Dildo.**

Brady, Evelyn Louise Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on Wednesday, December 15, 1999, Evelyn Brady, aged 96 years.  Leaving to mourn with many fond and loving memories, her brother Willis Brady of Halifax; nieces; Janet Flemming (Robert), St. John's and Heather Zitner (David), Halifax; a special great-niece Heather Griffin (Jay) and special great- nephew Brian Flemming (Darlene), and their families; other relatives and friends.  Funeral Service to take place on Thursday, December 16, 1999, 9:30 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow in the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road.  Donations in her memory may be made to St. Patrick's Mercy Home. **

Bragg, Arthur Died Tuesday, December 14, 1999, Arthur Francis Bragg, age 51.  Left with precious memories are his wife Donna; daughter, Dana  and son-in-law Tom Rogers; son Stephen and wife Laura (Glover); also precious grandchildren: Emily, Anne and Daniel.  Leaving to mourn in Newfoundland, his brothers; Steven (Brenda), Danny (Dot), and Charlie; sisters: Kathleen (Mike Murphy), Rose, Margaret, Lucy and Wilhemena.  Also in Newfoundland remembering him with a smile is Donna's family, who embraced him as their own. A very special sister-in-law Lona, who helped take care of him to the end.  Lona's husband and Art's good buddy Gord Badcock; brothers in-law; Cyril(Betty), Jim (Siobhan) and Jim's children's mother, Lil; his personnel comic, Don (Hilda); sisters-in-law; Toni Hibbs, Juanita Holwell (Bill), Tracey Hibbs and Lynn Cooper (John); a large number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  Art will also be missed by many friends in Vancouver where he, Donna and their children, lived for 15 years.  Remembering him as well are Michael and Kathryn who made him an honorary uncle; many friends in Alberta, his great workmates and most considerate employer George Esterer and family.  Art's courage and humor will never be forgotten.  As per Art's wishes, cremation has already taken place.  A Memorial Service  celebrating his life will be held at The St. Albert Funeral Home (9 Muir Drive), Connelly-McKinley Ltd., 11 a.m. Friday, December 17, 1999.  At a later date, Art's ashes will be returned to Newfoundland.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity dear to Art's heart, The Spina Bifida Clinic at Glenrose Hospital, EDM. **  

Bragg, Melvin L. Corner Brook, Newfoundland.  It is with sadness that the family of the late Mr. Melvin Bragg, announce his passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, on Saturday,  December  11th, 1999 at the age of 79 years.  He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Blanche (nee Avery); his sisters: Vivian Bragg, Corner Brook and nephew Roy and niece Judy; Susan Williams, Florida, and nephews, Danny, Dale, nieces, Ann and Karen; Mildred Kinsman, St. John's and niece Colleen and nephew Gordon; sisters -in-law: Gwen Lambert (Robert), Southport; Minnie Marche(Eric), Shoal Harbour;  brothers-in-law:  Cecil Avery (Phyllis), Southport; Arthur (Una) Avery; Silas (Minnie); Leslie (Daphne) and Clifford (Joyce) Avery, all residing at Weybridge, Random Island.  He will also be missed by his special niece Bernie Primmer, Mount Pearl and a large number of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  He is predeceased by his parents, Howard and Mary Bragg.  The Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness on Premier Drive, Corner Brook with interment at the Kingdom Hall Cemetery in Pasadena.  Visitation will take place at Wellington Funeral Home, 31 Wellington St, Corner Brook, phone 634-9800, Monday during the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 and Tuesday from 10-12 noon.  Tributes may be made by making donations to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Corner Brook.**

Bridger, Wilbert (Bert) Kitchener
Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles-Escasoni on December 31, 1999, Wilbert Kitchener Bridger, age 83 years. Born January 20, 1916 in Brighton, Newfoundland. Predeceased by parents George and Priscilla, brothers Pearce and Dexter, sisters Fanny and Lily. Leaving to mourn with cherished memories, his loving wife Meta (nee Greenham); daughters: Loretta Roper (Edgar), Kay Whitten (Stephen); sons: George (Stacey), Oslo (Tana) and Clyde; grandchildren; Mark, Susan, and Phillip Whitten, Nicole Roper, and Rhonda Bridger (USA); brothers in law: Wilbur, Otto (Nellie), Fred (Evelyn), Harold (May) and Frank (Verbena); sisters in law: Ruby Greenham, Sadie Stockley (Roy) and Florence Greenham; many nephews, nieces and a large circle of relatives and friends. Brown, Eva M. (nee Hollett)
Aged 87, beloved wife of the late Earl C. Brown passed peacefully away at St. Luke's Home, St. John's on December 25th, 1999 after succumbing to Alzheimer's disease. Left to mourn her are her loving daughters and their spouses; Linda and David Kilcup, Audrey and Leslie Pike, Daphne and Raymond LeGrow and Edith and Warwick Meadus; as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd, St. John's, December 28 from 7-9 P.M.. The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., December 29th, 1999 at Carnell's Chapel with interment following at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. She will be sorely missed. 

Butt, Arthur Wilson Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Palliative Care Unit, after a courageous battle with cancer, on December 12, 1999, Arthur Wilson Butt, age 78 years.  Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his loving wife of 46 years, Ethel (nee Brien); one son Roger (Patricia); one daughter Cindy McNeil; four grandchildren, Melissa and Katelyn Butt, Shawn McNeil of Edmonton; one sister Jean Pardy, St. John's; and as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.  Mr. Butt was a loyal long time member of Wesley United Church Choir.  Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd.  Visiting hours daily from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.  Funeral service 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 1999 from Wesley United Church, Patrick Street, with interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Lung Association of Newfoundland and Labrador or The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. **

Clarke, Amelia Called home to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 12, 1999.  Born in Liberia in 1948, Amelia was forced from her homeland by civil war in 1989.  She spent eight years in a refugee camp in Cote d'Ivoire before coming to Canada in February 1997.  Amelia was a "mother" to anyone in need of assistance.  She is survived by 11 children and five great-grandchildren.  Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral 2 p.m. on Thursday from West End Baptist Church with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West End Baptist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of one's choice.**

Coady, Frederick Joseph (Freddy)
Passed away suddenly at his home in St. John's, Monday, December 13, 1999, formerly of Bay Bulls, in his 69th year. Predeceased by sisters: Marcella Walsh, Rita Bishop, Theresa Carter and brother Wilfred Coady. Leaving to mourn with loving memories, nieces and nephews from the Walsh, Carter, Bishop and Coady families, as well as brother-in-law Patrick Carter and many other relatives and friends. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Funeral Mass on Wednesday, December 15, 1999 at 11 A.M. from Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Bay Bulls. Interment at Our Lady of Mount Loretta Cemetery, Bay Bulls.**

COLE, Leonard - Passed away at Toronto on December 24, 1999, age 72 years, formerly of Bell Island. Leaving to mourn 5 sisters: Bride Noftall (Roy), Kingston, Ont., Marjorie O'Mara (Frank), Huntsville, Ont., Shirley Seaward, B.C., Dorothy, Mount Pearl, Cecilia, Mount Pearl; 2 brothers: Fred and Samuel, both of Mount Pearl. Cremation took place at Toronto. A Memorial Service with interment will take place at Bell Island at a later date.

Collins, Joseph
Passed peacefully away on December 25, 1999 at Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Oakville, Ontario. Joseph (Joe) Collins, in his 59th year after a courageous battle with cancer. Formerly of Freshwater, Placentia Bay. Predeceased by his parents John (1994) and Mary (1998). Leaving to mourn his devoted wife and best friend Beth, and his two loving daughters Sarah and Laura. Also, his brother John (Jennie) Follett, at Placentia, his sisters Marg (Richard) Power at North Harbour, Marie at Scarborough, and Josephine (Sebastian) Walsh at North Harbour. His mother in law Frankie Higginson and the members of her family. Funeral Services were held at St. Michael's Church, Oakville, on December 30, 1999. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.**

Condon, Kevin F. Conway, Sister Mary Placide, RSM Entered into eternal life from McAuley Convent, St. John's, Newfoundland on Tuesday, December 28, 1999, Sister Mary Placide Conway, RSM, aged 90 years.  Predeceased by her brother Bill: and her sisters Dolores and Kathleen; and sister-in-law Florrie.  Leaving to mourn, besides the Sisters of Mercy, her brothers: Gerald (Sadie), St. John's; Tom, LaChine, Quebec;  sister, Betty Norris (Abe), Cambridge, Ontario; sister-in-law Kay Conway, Cambridge, Ontario; one brother-in-law Richard King, Hamilton, Ontario; several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, plus many friends.  Waking at McAuley Convent, 250 Waterford Bridge Road, St. John's, on Wednesday December 29, 1999, 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, December 30 until 9 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial from Corpus Christi Parish Church, Waterford Bridge Road on Friday, December 31, 1999 at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Belvedere Cemetery.

Desbarats, George Henri
Passed peacefully away at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavillion on Monday, December 13, 1999 George Henri Desbarats. Aged 99 years. George H. Desbarats graduated from the Royal Naval College of Canada in 1918. He continued his studies at McGill University, where he received, an honors degree in Electrical Engineering in 1922. He is a charter member of The Association of Professional Engineers of Newfoundland. He is a retired Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, a Veteran of World War I and World War II, and a past president of Mount Pearl Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was the first chairman of the Newfoundland Power Commission, which is now Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Along with other societies and organizations, he is a fellow of the American Geographic Society, and a member of the society of American Military Engineers. He is predeceased by Gladys Whitten, 1989. He leaves to mourn with loving memories his three daughters: Carmen Desbarats, Ottawa; Denise Desbarats (Paul Pierson), Golden, Colorado; and Andree Desbarats (Dr. Henry Becker), Kingston; one son, Georges Allain Desbarats, Ottawa; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and also a number of nieces, nephews in Ontario and other relatives and friends. Dunphy, Patrick William Of Dartmouth, died December 8, 1999, in his 76th year, at the Q. E. Health Sciences (Victoria General Site) in Halifax. Born in Curling, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary (Rockett) Dunphy.  He received his high school education at the Sacred Heart School in Curling.  He went to work at Furlong Brothers Herring Plant and Coombs Department Store just before joining the firm of Humber Motors Ltd. in 1954.  In 1964 he purchased the automobile dealership from the estate of his father-in-law, and continued to operate the same until 1978 when he sold the company to Derek  Young C.A.  He was a member of the Archbishop Howley Council of the Knights of Columbus for many years and was an Honorary Life Member.  He was also an Honorary Member of Rotary International.  During his years in the automobile business, he served a term as president of the Newfoundland Auto Dealers Association and was a director of the Canadian Auto Dealers Association; he also served as a director of the Ford Dealer Advisory Council.  During his business career we also served a year as president of the Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce and a Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.  Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Wiseman; one daughter, Barbara MacEwen  (John) and their children, Patrick and Lori-Beth, all of Dartmouth.  Also surviving are his sisters: Gertrude MacLennan (John), Joan O'Driscoll (Francis); and brothers: Gerald (Grace); William (Irene); Kenneth (Renata);and a large circle of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a sister Rita Milani and brothers Francis and Harold.  Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9  (Thursday) today in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church (Maple Street, Dartmouth).  Cremation to follow with burial at a later date in Oakridge Cemetery.  Family flowers only, by request.  In lieu, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.**

Passed away in peace Thursday, December 9, 1999 at the Pioneer Care Center of Kitchener.  She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her sons; Ellsworth LeDrew and his wife Karen and Stephen LeDrew.  She was predeceased by her husband Reverend Ralph Glendon LeDrew of Rhodes Avenue United Church in Toronto (originally of Cupid's, Newfoundland).  She was a loving mother of a closely-knit family of eight ladies from Random Island in Newfoundland and will be dearly missed by sisters Donne Roberts, Bina Butler and her husband Bob, and Dulcie Joycey and her husband Gordon.  Sisters Hazel Brown, Fran Sawlor, Vera Gillingham and Mabel Young,  predeceased Millie.  She is fondly remembered by her sister-in-law; Annie LeDrew, her grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.  She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by Parry.  The special care and warm attention by the staff at Pioneer Care Center, Winston Park and Ina Grafton Gage Home are greatly appreciated. The service will be held in the Chapel at the Pine Hills Cemetery Chapel and Reception Center, 625 Birchmount Road(Birchmount and St. Clare Avenue, East),  416- 267-8229, on Tuesday, December 14, 1999 at 11 AM for family and close friends.  Interment Pine Hills Cemetery. **
