CHINNIAH Vimala Chandra
January 14, 1941 - December 11, 2019

Chandra was born on January 14, 1941. Singapore was his home but in reality, the world was his home. He envisioned a world without borders. He was a global citizen who travelled the world and embraced where he was: its language, culture, customs and especially its people; learning from everyone around him from every age and walk of life. Although Chandra loved his life in Singapore as the middle of 11 siblings, as an athlete and as assistant Superintendent of Police he longed to explore all the world had to offer and set out in 1974 on that adventure. That same year he met his wife, Sheila Gearin from Renews, Newfoundland, a place he treasured and found friends, especially with his mother-in-law, Mollie. He settled and thrived in Newfoundland culture and found in its people the sincerity and honesty he valued. Education was a value instilled in Chandra and all his siblings by their parents, K. & R. Chinniah. Chandra enlisted in the M.Sc program at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His area of study in Parasitology opened up contacts with every level of the Newfoundland Fishery; meeting people who became his friends for life. Music was a big part of Chandra's life. His real delight was dancing, especially with his partner in the company of others. Be it a slow lulling waltz, tango or Spanish melody, a lively jig, jive or his favorite, the twist. Chandra was always the first to his feet. His many hours of listening to classical music led to a discussion about nature and his concern for the environment. Chandra was very close to his family. He and Sheila travelled extensively but always considered Singapore a treasure of support through family and friends. His father's death in a traffic accident in 1987 was a big loss to Chandra. In 2017 he and Sheila travelled to Singapore for his mother's funeral. She died at the age of 103 but grieving doesn't stop at any age when the loss is your mother. Chandra is also predeceased by his sisters: Padma (1988) and Puspa (2013); his brother Shanmuganathan (2010); his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Leo Gearin (1977) and Mollie Gearin (2010). He leaves to mourn his wife, Sheila (Gearin) Chandra; his sisters Devi and Rathi in Singapore; his brothers: Gopal and Manohara in Singapore; Rasu and Ragu in Australia; Ganeish in the Philippines along with their families and the nephews of his deceased siblings; members of the Gearin family; special sister-in-law Kathleen (Gearin) Pike (Doug) and their children and grandchildren; and many cousins and friends worldwide. Mourning with us are his dear friends, Rasul Khan and Ken Mercer who shared a constant and cherished bond with Chandra. He treasured their friendship so much. Chandra spent the last 18 months at Pleasantview Towers. The nursing staff and the support staff on 4NW were his angels. The neurology staff at the Health Science Centre and the Movement Disorder Clinic were there for Chandra every step of the way allowing him to make the best of each day. Although his Parkinson's Disease was progressing, there were no indicators that the end was near. He slipped away quietly in the late afternoon of December 11, 2019.
His vision of making the world a better place will be celebrated at a future date when his family and friends will remember together a life well lived, a generosity that knew no limits, a value for fun, laughter and honesty in life and the humility to learn something from everyone he met. "…and when you get the choice to sit it out or dance…. I hope you dance…. I hope you dance" (I Hope You Dance - LeeAnn Womack)

Ken was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and a passionate teacher and mentor who inspired and touched the lives of thousands during his 30-year career at Gonzaga High School. Following his retirement in 2005, Ken furthered his career in science education as the Executive Director of the Newfoundland Science Centre and as the Director of Biotechnology for Sanofi-Aventis at Memorial University's GENESIS Group. Ken remained humble throughout his life, always assisting others without expectation of recognition or gratitude. He was kind to the betrodden, generous to the less fortunate, a loyal friend to all animals, and spent his life trying to better the lives of others. Ken lived by the motto - "A man for others" - a philosophy instilled in him through his immersion in the Jesuit culture at Gonzaga High School. In accordance with Ken's character, the family requests that flowers and other items be withheld, and instead donations be made to The Gathering Place, or simply to pay it forward to an individual in need. Special thank you to the staff at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their care and compassion towards Ken and family in his final days, and to the many physicians, nurses, and specialists in Eastern Health who have attended to him over the years. She had three brothers, Austin, Gerald and Michael and seven sisters Lillian, her twin Sheila, Marcella, Ursula, Stella, Bernice and Helen. Gerald, Lillian, Stella, Bernice and Helen survive her. Leona met Michael Daley, the love of her life, in Goose Bay, Labrador where they married on September 8, 1959. They had three children, Brian (Kathleen Roger), Annette (Glen Abbott) and Carolyn (Mike Summers) all born in Goose Bay who went on to have careers in law, public service and health care. Mike and Leona lived in St. John's, Grand Falls, Corner Brook, Halifax, St. John, NB and Ottawa, where Mike retired from a career with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1993. They returned to St. John's in 2017 where they lived together in Tiffany Village until Mike's death on June 19, 2018. Leona was devoted to her family and adored her grandchildren, Julia, Catriona and Lauren. These encounters went well despite the low esteem in which she held most politicians. Mike and Leona also met the Queen during the royal visit to Newfoundland in 1978. Leona's tenacity was admired by family and friends alike. She never backed down when she felt she was in the right; a lesson learned by many. The same tenacity was evident in her final days. FARRELL James J.
September 28, 1933 - December 30, 2019

The Farrell and extended families announce with sadness the passing of James J. Farrell, after a recent fall which had followed a period of medical illness. However, it is with great pride that we reflect upon a full life lived. Predeceased by his parents Matthew and Catherine Farrell; sisters Marie (Farrell) Lavers and Noreen (Farrell) Jackman and brother-in-law Hank Light. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 32 years Rose (Melvin) Farrell, his sister Loretta, brothers-in-law Jack Lavers (Jane Pardy) and Donald Jackman, and a large circle of nephews and nieces and extended family and friends. Thanks are expressed to Dr. Rod McCarthy for years of attentive medical care and to Dr. Kevin Melvin and Dr. Paul Jackman and other dedicated medical consultants. Jim lived a full and fascinating life documenting much of it in a daily journal. His formative years on Bell Island were followed by graduating from St Bon's High School in St John's as part of a group of iconic alumni from that venerable school. In the 1950's Jim started his business career and maintained from then to the current day with Rose a successful operation in property ownership and rental known as Farrell Enterprises. As a man of science, Jim was called to pursue advanced training in Fire Investigation. He completed a specialized course at the respected Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois and was one of the earliest fully certified Fire Investigators in NL. He enjoyed a long and fruitful professional career as a consultant to the Provincial Fire Service and the RCMP and RNC as well as the Insurance industry. His expertise was sought on many complex cases including the Bell Island Energy Phenomenon - the "Boom", April 1978 - as was documented on The History Channel with Jim as Consultant Guest. In middle years Jim was blessed to have his heart stolen by Rose Melvin and they wed on December 29, 1987. Rose was his dedicated partner until his last breath. They enjoyed many gatherings with family and friends over the years and the company of their beloved pets (dog "JJ") and (cat "Tiger"). Jim and Rose worked tirelessly over the years together on their successful business operations. Visits to Lance Cove, Bell Island or their cabin/cottage in Middle Gull Pond were fond highlights as well as the times and travels in their RV with friends from that motoring community. Jim was raised in a tradition of Christian Faith guided by his parents and subsequently inspired by Rose's spiritual dedication. He loved a story and told many - almost all of them true. If you visited him, you might receive a recounting of one of the tales and a reference from his extensive journal. He grieved the losses of his parents and sisters and other family and friends and spoke fondly of them until his final day; he truly appreciated the rich human circle in his life with his loving wife as his constant love. Visitation will be held from Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, January 6 and Tuesday, January 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held from St. Pius X Parish, 16 Smithville Crescent, on Wednesday, January 8 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a reception at St. Pius X Parish Hall. Interment of cremated remains at Bell Island Cemetery to occur at a date to be confirmed but expected Summer 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's memory to SPCA or Shriner's Hospitals. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

She attended Mercy Convent School and in 1944 she joined the Royal Canadian Navy, travelling to Cornwallis and Ottawa. Upon her return to Newfoundland in 1948 she married Gerry Kearney. She often regaled her family with stories of her work as a singer for the troops and as a stenographer. In the late 1960s, she seized an opportunity to do a radio commentary for the CBC, this eventually led Margaret to develop an extensive and diverse career as a journalist and broadcaster. As a freelance writer Margaret regularly contributed articles to The Daily News, the Evening Telegram and Decks Awash. As a freelance journalist she was a regular contributor to Peter Gzowski's CBC "Morningside" show. In the early 1970s, while working with the province's Department of Consumer Affairs, she initiated Box 999, a consumer advocacy column. Margaret is also remembered for developing the VOCM children's program "Nan-Nan Mags" and a four-part series titled Radio 65, which broadcast live on-air on CBC in the 1980s. As an octogenarian, Margaret appeared as a local commentator for CBC Here and Now, in "Marg's Corner." There she would talk about important issues facing her fellow senior citizens. Margaret's natural ability to connect with people and radio experience led her to work for the provincial Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation between 1978 and 1992. Margaret became "the voice of our province in international media," working tirelessly to influence travel writers and broadcasters to showcase Newfoundland and Labrador as one of the most breathtaking places to visit. During this time, she was also instrumental in setting up standards for the province's Bed and Breakfast industry. Margaret was honoured by the province for her accomplishments, receiving the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2014. KELLAND Richard Philip
Passed away suddenly on December 6th at age 79 of Mount Carmel. Richard (Dick) - retired Chief Warden of Her Majesty's Penitentiary and a Commissioned Officer - was born in Bay Robert's, resided most of his adult life in St. John's and after retirement lived in Mount Carmel with his wife of 58 years Kathleen (Kitty). Kitty and Dick loved trouting and spent many days at the side of a gully or pond where he tried - tirelessly but unsuccessfully - to teach her how to hook the fish. They enjoyed traveling to all parts of the Province on a quest for the "big" one and a few "alleged" 2 pounders were caught - on the Pinware. Like his father Otto, he loved the ocean and both built boats. Otto built model boats and schooners and Richard built a cabin cruiser and trap skiff. They enjoyed teasing each other by saying "no skill" - if one or the other complained about difficulties in accomplishing a task or a project. He was a talented painter and loved a vociferous debate - particularly on matters of politics - he considered himself a Newfoundlander attached to the ocean, independence, and spirit of her people. As a lover of science - many days were spent considering theories - particularly of Einstein and space-time continuum, and later the works of Stephen Hawking. His last written note was E = mc2 and as was his personal belief - his energy remains, however now presents in a different form. The night before he passed he played his final match of Jeopardy and did get the Final Jeopardy correct. Richard was predeceased by his mother and father Otto and Hilda Kelland, brother Bill and sister in law Fran, sisters; Joan and brother in law Frank Beck, Rosalind White, mother and father in law Kathleen and Eric Fowler, in laws; Leo Evans and Gordon Pope Leaving to celebrate his life - devoted and loving wife - Kitty, daughter Suzanne (Sue) Kelland-Dyer (Paul), son Rick (Shirley-Ann Wheadon), grandchildren; Paul Dyer (Megan), Kailah Dyer (Justin Whalen) Andrew Kelland (Sam), Devin Kelland (Dusty), and Philip Kelland (Jazz), and his pride and joy - great- grandchildren Zaccor and Isaac Dyer, brothers; Bob (Margie), John, Jerry, and sisters; Betty Fallon(John) and Jocelyn Kelland, brothers in law; Weston (Kim) and David White, sisters in law; Maxine Evans, Hazel Summers, Ruth Tummonds (Joe), Geraldine Barnes(Ed), Ruby and many special nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Gibbon's ambulance service and staff, Dr. Percy Crocker, Dr. Jamie Farrell, and pharmacist Derek Long for their professional care of Richard during his illness. The family also thanks Mike and Dot Ezekiel (long-time friends and neighbours) for their help whenever needed. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Saturday, December 14th from 1pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. A private scattering of his ashes in the "snug green cove" will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Fluvarium would be greatly appreciated as Richard was very supportive of Science Programs for children. Her brothers and sisters; Alice Blundon (Edgar), Betty Hearn, Mary Holloway, Clare Sikorsky (Mike) Cathy Parsons (Dick), Brenda Humby (Derrick), Jim Hamlyn (Dallis) and Max Hamlyn (Ken), sisters-in-law Geraldine Hamlyn and Georgina Martin. A true force of nature, Anna was a devoted sister, mother and wife. She was devoted to her younger brothers and sisters, who were like her first children. Her devotion to her own children was unsurpassed. To her daughter Karen, for whom she was both the greatest mother and advocate one could ask for. To her son Michael, she was always both a great source of support and encouragement, traits she also continued with Louise and then as "Nanna" for Megan. Her love of children lead her to a career as a teacher where her devotion to her students was outstanding. All those who knew her would recognize "the look." She faced her illness as she faced life, with profound strength and courage, but she never let it define her. He started Display Arts of Toronto which grew to be a very successful Toronto based business with showrooms in New York City; he was well known in the arts community for his passion and support for writers, visual artists and musicians such as Figgy Duff, WGB and Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers who he brought to perform at the Caravan in Toronto. Bob taught himself to play the recorder, accordion and bodhran. He wrote meaningful poems. He had a black belt in karate. He loved gardening and renovating heritage houses. He loved sailing and one of his proudest accomplishments was bringing the Newfoundland Flotilla of 100 boats from Toronto to Bonavista to meet the Matthew in 1997 and further creating a lasting scholarship for students at the Marine Institute. Bob started OceanNet, a non profit group to clean beaches and ghost nets and for 11 years worked tirelessly as a volunteer. He started the Doryhouse Gift Shop in St. John's and became a regular sight on Water Street where everyone loved Bob. Bob was most content in his adopted home of Cupids. Most importantly, Bob was kind, generous and compassionate and saw the good in everyone. At his request Bob was cremated. PARSONS Robert "Bob" Joseph
It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Parsons, a proud native of Flatrock, announces his passing after a brief illness, on December 19th 2019, at the age of 64 years. Robert will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend Catherine (Kay) and his children, Joanne (Kenny), Jim, Jennifer and his loving grandchildren, Hannah, Jaxon and Nate. Robert will be fondly remembered by his sister Kathleen and his brothers Carl (Donna), Chris (Kathleen) and Kevin (Denise) and his many nieces and nephews from the Parsons and Houlihan family. Robert was predeceased by his parents Mabel and Kevin and his mother in-law Margaret Houlihan. Roberts was a true dog lover and he leaves behind his golden retrievers Marley and Oscar. His beloved dogs joined him in his passion for antique cars and where seen many a day in the front seat of his 64 Chev driving out Torbay road. Robert was destined to be a fisherman the day he first listened to his grandfather's stories. As a young man he fished with his father Kevin and eventually had his own crew and became a very successful inshore fisherman. With the cod moratorium, Robert turned his attention to the offshore and became a very accomplished crab fisherman carrying on the Parsons fishing tradition. Robert was proud to be the Chairman of the Flatrock Harbor Authority and was instrumental in getting the facilities in place at the Flatrock breakwater. Robert was a well-respected "legendary" member of the St John's fire dept and retired as a captain after 32 years in 2008. The fire department was family to Robert. He followed in his father's footsteps and the Parsons legacy continues with David his nephew who joined the FD in 2013. Robert was the "Chief Organizer" for the annual moose hunting trip to Millertown with his friends for 42 years. Everyone knew who the boss was and, like everything else, they respected him for it. We would like to thank all of those who helped Robert over the past several months including his cousin Dr. Elizabeth Maher and our community nurse Paulette Doyle. Visitation to take place from Caul's Funeral Home, Torbay, on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass to take place from St. Michael's Church, Flatrock on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 10 a.m. with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Robert's memory to the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Flatrock.

STOCKLEY Roy Edward
It is with great sadness we tell the world that Roy Edward Stockley left us on December 6, 2019. Born in 1937, Roy was raised in Notre Dame Bay; where he found a passion for education. He journeyed from student to teacher in the same one-room school. In university and then again at teachers' residence in Gander, he heard heels clicking outside the classroom and looked outside to meet the love of his life, Evelyn. Their enduring marriage started in 1964. A short while later arrived their eldest son Rod, with whom he shared a love of good company, good food, good drink, and good times. Rod Married Colleen Lewis and they brought grandchildren to Roy's life, in their three daughters, Jennifer her fiancé Tiffany Leonard (aka Stephanie), Amanda, and Nicole. Nicole married Shannon Sullivan, and together they promoted Roy to a Great Grandfather, when their daughter Aurora was born. Pamela the next child, and frequent crib partner, introduced him to travel, rollerblading, B&B tree-hugging, and other shenanigans. Her husband Clint Harwood and Roy would plot long Sunday dinners with too many potatoes any time they were together. Roy and Les (next son and only compliant berry picker) grew many things in the garden and despite a lot of time spent fishing, didn't catch many fish. The time was always more important than the fish. Heather the youngest joined the music in a household that had 3 organs and 2 pianos. She and her husband Paul Biggin also brought Roy grandchildren in hockey stars Emily and Kai. Roy had many passions. Roy's wine was legendary, and despite a spectacular quantity produced, to our knowledge never included a single grape. He loved cards: bridge and crib being his primary vices. You always had to watch carefully when he added one for the Jack. He took the family on long road trips, finding sunflowers, and taking amazing pictures of the family on the glaciers. With love we send Roy on his last trip and celebrate our memories of him. Roy was predeceased by his sister Marg, brother Pleamon, mother Gertrude, and sister Teresa. Left to mourn are his sisters Joan and Marina. A warm thank you to Dr Grenning, Randy, Donna and Sandra. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John's on Monday and Tuesday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service to be held from Barrett's Chapel on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 2:00pm. Reception to follow at Barrett's Reception Centre. Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.

YOUNG Walter Woodrow
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Woodrow Young, 86 of Morley's Siding. He completed the last mile of his life's journey on December 20, 2019 at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville. Born November 1, 1933 in Musgravetown, he is predeceased by his parents Walter and Bessie (Vincent), sister Maxine Schamper (Robert), brother John Young (Vera) and brother-in-law Eric Tremblett. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at a young age and seen the world before moving to Morley's Siding and starting his lifelong career as a farmer. A short time later he married Kay Diamond and brought her to Morley's Siding where they started their lives together. He loved his career as a farmer and did not mind hard work. He was at his happiest when spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and nephews and nieces. Anyone who knew him well knew him as a legendary prankster. There is nothing he wouldn't do for a bit of fun. As a young boy he would sneak onto his father's schooner and head to St. John's, especially if one of his pranks got him in trouble. His love of life and pranks made him a favourite among his children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and their friends. Left with wonderful, loving memories are his wife Kay (Diamond), son Verdon Greening (Glenda), daughters Suzette Strong (Will) and Margo Young, and his precious and much loved grandchildren Kaitlin, Lucas (Danielle), Liam, Saydee and Sophie, brother Hubert Young, sister-in-law Patsy Tremblett, many nephews, nieces, cousins and a large circle of family and friends.
