FRASER, Ellen Mary - It is with much sadness that we tell you of our mother Ellen's peaceful passing on December 31st, 2016, at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, in St. John's, NL. She had a stroke before Christmas while visiting her good friend Bett. All of her children quickly returned to St. John's and were able to be with her during her remaining days. She was aware we were all there and she was very comfortable and peaceful. We had a "Kitchen Party" in her hospital room, and shared laughter and fond family memories. Our father, Harvey, died in 1995 and Mom lived her years after his death, vibrantly and with many friends. Her sister, Audrey Dancey, passed nearly a decade earlier and her brother, Tom Efford, just a month ago. Mom is remembered by her children, Joel and his wife Kathy, of St. John's and their children, Chris and Katie; Helena in Dartmouth and her children, Andrea and Melanie; Victor and his wife Elaine, in Oshawa; Louis and his wife Jane, in Calgary and their children, Will, Ian, Carolyn and Sarah; and her youngest daughter, Ruth, in Bedford. Also mourning her passing is her dear niece Allison Dancey. Mom leaves her many friends at Maplewood Manor, where she will be fondly missed. Mom's optimistic spirit and her love of laughter; her contentment with life and her small daily acts of kindness will forever be remembered. Mom and Dad's 'Joie de vivre" extends to us all. We will have a small family gathering in the summer and will warmly reflect on memories of the wonderful and loving lives of our parents. Donations may be given to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind at this time of our mothers passing.

HOWCROFT, Graham - (November 14, 1944 - December 10, 2016)- Graham passed away peacefully in St. John's, Newfoundland, in the presence of his very dear friend and companion Susan Cummings. Graham Howcroft was born in the seaside town of Blackpool, Lancashire, England, in 1944 -- what the residents there would call a 'sand-grown-un'. The son of Lettie (nee Hewitson) and Horace Howcroft, he is survived by his elder brother, Stuart Howcroft, who lives in Blackpool, and his older sister, Barbara Senior, who lives in Milton Keynes, England. In 1960, at 16 years of age, Graham left school to work in the science laboratory of a grammar school, learning to be a glassblower. During this time, he studied architectural drawing and design at the Blackpool College of Art and glassblowing at the Harris College of Art and Technology in Lancashire, England. In 1966, he moved to work for the University of Lancaster, making various pieces of scientific glassware for research projects. It was here that he started using glass as a medium for art. In 1968, the British Society of Glassblowers gave him the A.D. Wood Award for outstanding craftsmanship. In 1969, Graham moved to St. John's, Newfoundland, where for the next 5 years he worked as a glassblower at Memorial University. In 1974, after spending a year studying the history and techniques of stained glass and mosaic in Canada and the United States, he returned to England and worked as a glassblower at Manchester University. Returning to Newfoundland in 1977, Graham's imagination and talent became evident as he began making stained-glass windows for churches, private residences, and public buildings. He opened a glass studio in St. John's in 1979, where for the remainder of his life he produced a large body of impressive and varied work. An early example was a series of 13 stained-glass windows for St Peter's Anglican Church in Conception Bay, one of his largest commissions. His 500- square- foot piece, Journey (2002), is there to be seen by all who pass through St. John's International Airport. A comment he made in 1987 neatly sums up his description of himself: 'I am a graphic designer rather than a painter. I like things to have a good, hard, clearly defined edge to them -- to be stark -- and have a black- and- white, unambiguous character.' (From Graham Howcroft: Stained Glass Designer, The Newfoundland Herald, April 14, 1987, p.26). A more extensive account of Graham's work can be found at the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Website http://www.heritage.nf.ca/index.php Family and friends would like to express sincere thanks to Dr. Maurice Udechukwu, nurses and staff of St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for their care during Graham's hospitalization. A service of remembrance will be held at St. Thomas' Church, St. John's, Wednesday, January 4th, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. A special thanks to Reverend John Paul Westin, who will conduct the service. Reverend Greg Mercer has kindly agreed to a reception after the service in the church hall.

RENDELL, Leslie James - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie James Rendell on December 28, 2016 in his 90th year. Leslie, fondly remembered as Poppy, leaves to mourn his wife Julia (Cashin), son Jim (Jill), daughter Susan (Bob), and grandchildren Sara (Jeff) and Philip, and Leslie's sister Lorraine. Leslie is predeceased by son Blair and brother Gordon.  Born in Heart's Content in 1926, Leslie's life spanned an incredible era of technological change which really shaped his life's path. A story he often told was of travelling in the back of an open truck for hours over bumpy gravel roads from Heart's Content to St. John's in 1939 to see the King and Queen of England. The wildest of Leslie's boyhood dreams could never have envisioned himself almost 40 years later travelling across the Atlantic Ocean at supersonic speed aboard the British Airways Concorde. His aviation career really started at the age of 16 following his blacksmith father to Gander to work building the air base. Soon local workers were offered the opportunity to train as aircraft technicians and he was quick to sign on. It was the very beginning of international air passenger travel and the jet age soon followed. In 1963 his career took him from Gander to Goose Bay, a posting that all the family thoroughly enjoyed. Both Jim and Blair followed in Leslie's footsteps and chose careers in aviation. Daughter Susan followed his other passion, sports and recreation. Leslie retired from Allied Aviation in 1982 and he and Julia enjoyed their retirement years in Pasadena and St. John's.  Leslie lived a long, healthy and very fulfilling life for which we are very thankful. We are also very thankful for the exceptional care Leslie received from staff at St. Patrick's Mercy Home. A visitation is planned for Friday, December 30th, 2016 at Barrett's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road from 2pm - 4pm and 7pm - 9pm. A memorial service and internment will take place in Heart's Content on a warm summer's day! Time and date to be confirmed. Gone From My Sight by Henry Van Dyke
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and startsfor the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speckof white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."Gone where?Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast, hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her. And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voicesready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"And that is dying...
