BYRNE, James Anthony - "A great man died today," our father would say when someone important died. Well, a great man died on Saturday, December 5, 2015, when James Anthony Byrne was carried to heaven, lovingly surrounded by his family, in his 91st year. As was his wish, he has been reunited with his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret Irene, who went before him on August 2, 2015. Forever grateful for the tremendous blessing of having him in our lives, and heartbroken from his loss are his cherished children, James Bruce (AlyceLyne), Bob (Madonna) and Lisa (Derek Dunphy). Left with wonderful memories of an entertaining and loving Poppy, ("Skipper"), are his nine grandchildren, each of whom he truly adored, Ryan Clarke (Tiffiney), Laurissa Clarke (Jon), Erica Clarke Whalen (Wes), Robyn, Kayla (Mike), Meagan, Janessa, James, and Robert Byrne. Also leaving to mourn, his only surviving sibling, Theresa Wall, and special nephew Tom O'Reilly (Joan), together with a very large circle of family and friends. Jim was born in Curling NL, to Bernard Joseph "Big Joe?" Byrne and Louise (nee Buckle). One of the youngest of 16 children, he developed an engaging personality at a very young age. He was truly interested in his family and friends and remembered their accomplishments and experiences with incredible detail. While a great listener, he couldn't resist the temptation to tell about the accomplishments of his children or grandchildren, if the opportunity arose. Dad spent his working life at Canadian National Railway, beginning as a steam locomotive mechanic, working his way up through the ranks to Superintendent of Freight Services. With his own hands, he built the family home at 24 Albany Street, where he raised his children with love and fatherly affection. He was never too busy to listen, lend a hand, or give a ride, often on the bedtime bus (where he would crawl around the living room, loading a child on his back from each end of the sofa and the chair and deposit them to the appropriate bed). He was far more generous to others than he ever was to himself. An exceptional husband, father, grandfather and friend, his humility, kindred spirit and humour will be cherished in our hearts forever. Special thanks to his caregivers on 3 East, Chancellor Park, and at Tiffany Village who were so good to him over the last one and one-half years. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road.Visitation on Thursday, December 17, from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, December 18, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., Friday December 18, the Rosary will be said by the Knights of Columbus Terra Nova Council, of which Dad was a lifetime member. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Teresa's Church on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at 9:30 a.m., following which, he will be laid to rest alongside his life mate at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Teresa's.
May God hold both he and Mom in the palm of His hand until we meet again.

GILLINGHAM, Harold John (Jack) - (July 17th, 1920- December 30th, 2015) - On December 30, 2015 Harold John (Jack) Gillingham reached the end of his life journey. He died, surrounded by love, two days after being hospitalized during a Christmas visit with family in Alberta. Jack was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, on July 17, 1920, the first of Ken and Minnie (Thorne) Gillingham's six children. He grew up on Golf Avenue where he was first named Jack by a neighbour for whom he ran errands. In September 1939, like his father before, Jack answered his country's call to arms and volunteered for service in the Royal Air Force where he served as a wireless operator with 149 Squadron. On the night of March 1 / 2, 1943, on a raid against Berlin, his bomber was attacked by a night fighter and, as it headed home, the "Skipper" decided that fuel was too low and gave the order to bail out over Gueutteville near Dieppe, France. Jack became a Prisoner of War and was sent to Stalag VIIIB (Lamsdorf) in Poland. He survived the infamous "Long March" which started in January 1945 and was a POW until liberation on Good Friday, March 30th. His desire to return to his beloved Newfoundland was what sustained him. On his return to England Jack was reunited with Adela Harrison. They were married in Rotherham in September 1945 and arrived together in Corner Brook in January 1946. On his return to St. John's, Jack trained as an electrician. After working for City Electrical Company Limited, where he was a shop steward with the IBEW, he went into business with his father as an electrical contractor. In 1965 Jack became an Electrical Inspector with the Newfoundland Power Commission. Over the next ten years he travelled throughout Newfoundland and Labrador where his inspections were concerned with the rural electrification program and development of the provincial power grid. Wherever he went, Jack's approach to work won the respect of all he came in contact with.
Jack's wife Adela succumbed to cancer in December 1968. However, in March 1971 he married Florence Wilson (nee Tilley) and a new amazing family was born. In 1985 Jack retired, and ten years later, after fifty years on Bennett Avenue in St. John's, he moved to Kelligrews which was his much-loved home until his passing.
Over the years Jack was active with the Royal Canadian Legion, Wesley United Church and the Air Force Association of Canada. He was a modest man who learned by hard experience to value life's simple pleasures. Jack was also a man of many practical skills and any project he turned his hand to was done in a first class manner. He was a much loved hero to his family and all who knew him.
In addition to his parents and Adela, Jack was predeceased by his sister Margaret Woolridge, his brothers Gerald, Fred and wife Anne, Roy and wife Mildred, sister-in-law Joan and her husband Hal LeClair, brother-in-law David Tilley, and brother-in-law Ted Barnes. Jack is survived by his loving wife Florence; children David Wilson (Dot), Marilyn Tucker (Richard), Elaine Legge (Albert), Wenda Crummell (Bruce), John (Linda), Karen Miller (George) and Rae-Anne Ornella (Robert); grandchildren Cherie, Greg, Adele, Michelle, Denise, Rick, Andrea, Carolyn, Kelly, Leyna, Angela, Jessica and Marcus; great-grandchildren Ryan, Jayne, Daniel, Meagan, Jayme, Jordan, and baby Jack. He is also survived by his sister Joan Simmonds (Doug), brother-in-law Bruce Tilley (Liz), and sister-in-law Daphne Barnes. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many close friends, especially Scott and Cathy Oliver and family, plus the fabulous ladies (you know who you are!) of the Sunday card club. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of the Red Deer Regional Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Jack. Visitation in the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews, on Saturday, January 9th, 1-9 p.m.; Sunday, January 10th, noon-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Monday, January 11th, 2016 at 2 pm from the James J. Hickey Memorial Chapel, Kelligrews. Interment in the Field of Honour at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. GREEN, Roger Clifton - (December 10, 1945 - August 9, 2015) -
Roger Clifton Green
was born December 10, 1945 in Langley, Worcestershire, England, the second son to Alfred "Erb" and Louie "Lou" (nee Davis) Green.
Growing up in England, a young Roger especially enjoyed time spent with his big brother fixing cars, fishing, and building short wave radios. An athletic and sometimes mischievous lad, he worked part-time at his Uncle Harry's gas station during his high school years when not playing guitar with school friends.
With an inquisitive and gifted mind, Roger entered the undergraduate Medical Biochemistry Program at the University of Birmingham in 1963. Upon earning an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in 1966, he was accepted directly into the Doctoral Program in Biochemistry under the supervision of Dr. Peter O'Brien.
When Dr. O'Brien accepted a position at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), Roger sought permission to continue his doctoral studies oversees in Canada under his direction, and made the move to St. John's, Newfoundland in 1968.
Roger earned his PhD in 1970 from the University of Birmingham and commenced a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 1971 at the newly created medical school at MUN, joining the Faculty of Medicine full-time in 1972. He served with the Faculty teaching and researching for 42 years, with the distinction of having taught every doctor that graduated from MUN's medical school. After retiring in September 2014, he held the position of Honorary Research Professor, Discipline of Medical Genetics, continuing to apply his considerable knowledge and experience to ongoing research, a mentor to graduate students as well.
Roger pursued an active life with many diverse interests. Early enjoyment playing football (soccer) followed him to St. John's where he played with the Fieldians. The Canadian wilderness quickly became one of his passions. He enjoyed many camping and canoeing trips across Newfoundland, canvas knapsack always in tow and stocked with the essentials: Swiss Army knife, bread and cheese, compass and map. And often a piece of rope, handy for practicing knots, securing the canoe, or leashing the dog.
Intrigued at understanding how things worked - ranging from testing the claims of waterproof watches to experimenting with shutter speed as a young, avid photographer to computer programming a provincial-scale database to support medical research - he was keen to use the latest technology, including GPS. He set up the first geocache in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001.
He most enjoyed simple moments of solitude, especially out on the barrens with his trusted four-legged companion or hunting partner. Sometimes his escape was watching for whales from eastern points, or just reading or tinkering while enjoying a good cup of tea.
Few knew that he used to build wooden furniture as a hobby. Some knew that he used duct tape to hem his pants. Many knew him for his sense of humour and wit. He should also be remembered for the loyal and generous man he was.
Roger is survived by many who miss him deeply. His qualities and interests will continue on in his three children: eldest son Jason (Jennifer) Green, Mississauga, ON, and daughter Zoë (Kevin Hofer) Green, Dundas, ON, born in the early 1970s to then wife Stella; and Zachary Giovannini-Green of Logy Bay, NL, born in the late 1980s to partner Gemma Giovannini. He is missed terribly by all.
Grandad's playful ways and infinite curiosity will especially be missed by Jason's boys Nathan and Callum, and Zoë's sons Targän and Quillan.
Leaving to mourn in the United Kingdom, beloved brother Brian (Pat) Green of Bourneheath, Worcestershire, England; nieces Julie (Paul) and Karen (Mark); great nieces and nephews Adrian, Michelle, Lorna, and Joseph; and great-great niece Jessica.
Roger was a special part of the extended Giovannini family, the Poynter and McNicholas families, and admired by Gus and Kay Etchegary and family. He is survived by Gemma's brother Albert Giovannini, Burlington, ON, and children Gregory, Gina, and Dylan; and predeceased by Gemma's sister Creusa (Ian) Hendry, Montreal, QC, and their daughters Cynthia (Joseph) Williams, Calgary, AB, and Stephanie (Thomas) Poynter, Boston, MA, and their families.
Roger leaves behind a group of dear friends and exceptional colleagues each with their own very special memories of him. Know that he appreciated your friendship and the times you shared together.
December 10th would have been Roger's 70th birthday. We all raised a glass to him.
