Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there- I did not die.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awake in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there- I did not die.

NICHOLSON, Kenneth Earl - 62, Halifax, NS. “The
way seemed long, but the sky was bright & somehow he felt he
was headed in the right direction.” It is with deep
sadness that we announce the passing of Ken after a brief but courageous
battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home in Halifax surrounded
by his family on
December 14, 2006. Ken was born in Glace Bay to
James and Anna Nicholson on January 11, 1944 and was raised in the
nearby community of Reserve Mines. In 1965 Ken joined the RCMP and
was stationed in Ottawa and Newfoundland where he met his wife Verna
of 35 years. While in Newfoundland he left the RCMP to pursue a career
in Industrial Safety - a career that led him from Saudi Arabia to
the Beaufort Sea. Ken’s great
personality and love of people reaped a wide circle of friends and
he cherished, respected and maintained these friendships down through
the years. Ken is survived by his wife Verna (Vardy); son Jamie;
daughter-in-law Trina and his precious grandchildren Katelyn and
Joshua, Middle Sackville, NS; mother-in-law Belle Vardy, Clarenville,
NL.; brother-in-law Douglas Vardy, Dartmouth, NS; brothers: Eric
(Nina) Glace Bay, Timmie (Reserve Mines), Ronald (Connecticut, USA),
Donald (Cindy) Abbotsford, BC, Butch (Reserve Mines); sisters: Lynn
(Albert) Strang, Lower Sackville, Marjorie (Marshall) Conrod, Dartmouth
and Georgina (Harold) Young, New Minas; as well as a large circle
of nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his mother Anna; father
James and brother Joseph. A former Newfoundland hockey coach described
him as a very competitive sports person, no matter if it was a practice
or a championship game Ken gave his best. He was not only competitive
but was a great team player and when there was a need to protect
his teammates, he was there. Yet there was a softer, gentler side
to Ken and this received the greatest exposure when he was with his
family, talking to Verna, Jamie and Trina or playing with Katelyn
and Josh. Ken will be remembered for many reasons but mostly for
his warm, friendly smile, his deep sense of faith and his tremendous
sense of family. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of
his acquaintance. At Ken’s request there will be no visitation.
Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated December
18th, 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with
Father Gerald Campbell officiating. Reception to follow in the Church
Hall. Internment will take place in the Parish Cemetery. Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral
Homes, Glace Bay, NS. A very special thank-you to Dr. Karen Clarke
and the VON/Palliative care team for their exceptional care and kindness
shown throughout this difficult time. Donations may be made to the
Hemochromatosis Society #272 - 7000 Minoru Blvd., Richmond, BC V6Y

and surrounded by loved ones who have gone before her. Cancer may
have been strong enough to take her body, but no cancer could ever
be strong enough to take her beautiful spirit. She will remain in
our hearts forever.
