Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, December 22nd, 2000, Jacob Abbott, aged 72 years, retired CN Marine Atlantic employee of 43 years. Leaving to mourn; his wife Violet; daughters; Cheryl, Roxanne Pitcher (Greg); son Harry (Brenda), granddaughter Kelli; grandson Jacob; sisters; Florence, Beatrice Waterman (Stan), Yvonne Locke (George); stepmother Mary Abbott; sister-in-law Jean (the late Roland Abbott); as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home from 2-5 and 7-10 P.M. on Sunday and from 7-10 P.M. on Monday. Funeral Service 11 A.M. on Tuesday, December 26th, 2000 from Barrett's Chapel. Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mery Home on December 31, 2000. Born January 23, 1921, Rupert was a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and the Northwest Territories. Leaving to mourn with loving memories, his devoted wife Marion; son Robert, Prince Rupert, B.C.; daugher Janet (Paul Baccardax), Oakville, ON; granddaughter Ardath Bartlett, Toronto, step-daughter Tamara Hutchings, Halifax; sisters; Mary Strang, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Shirley Mattheis, Ottawa. Predeceased by sisters; Florence Guy and Cynthia Hunt. Also leaving to mourn loving nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. At Rupert's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.. Born in Witless Bay, Newfoundland, Canada on July 31st, 1915. Mrs. Davis was the daughter of the late Patrick J. Lundrigan and the late Mary Lundrigan Aylward. She was retired from the New York City Board of Education and a life- long member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anderson, SC.. She is survived by one son; John J. Davis of Anderson and two grandchildren; Amy Davis and Ashley Davis of the home. She was preceded in death by seven brothers; William, Jerome, Joseph, Cyril, David, Charles and Alphonse Lundrigan and two sisters; Mary Gibbons and Ester Lundrigan. Services will be held on Wednesday, December 20th, 2000 at 11 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father James Dubrouillet officiating. Interment will follow in Long Island National Cemetery, Long Island, NY. Passed peacefully away at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on Wednesday, December 13th, 2000, Andrew Hatfield, aged 25 years, after a courageous 22 months awaiting a heart transplant. Andrew was surrounded, as always, by his loving family, parents Larry and Peggy (Martin), and older and adored brother Lawrence (Shari) and cousin Janet (Collins). A graduate of the former Gonzaga Jesuit High School. Andrew was predeceased by his grandparents; William (Druggist) and Jean (Crawford) Martin, and Lawrence and Alice (Power) Hatfield. Passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre, in her 72nd year, on Friday, December 29, 2000, following a brief and sudden illness taken while visiting family and friends in Newfoundland for the holidays. Our beloved Patricia leaves behind her husband Frederick of Crewe, England; her son Andrew and his wife Vi (Andrews) of St. John's; her son Simon of Yeovil, England and her cherished grandchildren; David and Katherine of St. John's. Her passing is mourned also by her brothers-in-law; Wilf, Tom and Ron together with their families and by a wide circle of relatives and friends in England, Newfoundland and around the world. Patricia befriended and touched all who met her in life, and her passing will leave an empty space in many lives. May she now sleep in peace, which she so richly deserves, and also rest warm and secure in our memories and in our hearts. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Charles Joseph McCarthy announce his passing on Sunday, December 10th, 2000 at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, in St. John's, in his 73rd year. He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife Onie (nee McKay); two daughters; Donna (Mrs. Alex McInnis) of St. John's and Angela of Deer Lake; one son Danny and wife Theresa of Sydney, Nova Scotia; three grandchildren; Katie-Ann of Scotland; Krista and Fraser of St. John's; one sister Kay Fitzgerald; two brothers; George and wife Kit; and Kevin and wife Eva all of Corner Brook. Also, a large circle of relatives and friends. Charlie was predeceased by his two brothers; Gerald and Jerry. Charlie was born in Crocker's Cove, Carbonear in October 1927. He moved to Corner Brook in 1938 and began work with the Newfoundland Railway in 1942. He moved to Deer Lake in 1969 and made it his home. After retiring in 1985, Charlie was very active in the community, involved in N.A.H.A., Royal Canadian Legion, Town Council, Knights of Columbus, Airport Board, Town Health Board and so much more, including politics. Charlie will be deeply missed by us all. Visitation will take place today, Tuesday at 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. from Parson's Funeral Home, 63 Northmain Street, Deer Lake. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday at 2 P.M. with Father John Collins officiating. Interment to follow at the family plot on Wights Road. Raffensperger, Mary Ellen (Born Nell Byrne)
November 2nd, 1906 - December 7th, 2000
Passed away at her home in Sun City, Arizona. She had been active to the last day of her life, and death came quickly. She is survived by her only son, Garrett and his wife, Joanne, and many relatives in Newfoundland. Nell was born in St. John's and spent many of her early and happiest years at school in Brigus. After marriage to Fred Byrne she moved ito New York, NY for many years, and returned to Newfoundland before the outbreak of World War 11. During the war Nell was employed as a cypherette at Fort William, working with the radio codes used by the Canadian Navy and convoys that assembled near St. John's. During the latter part of the 1940's Nell was a Director of social programs and events at Fort Pepperell and remembered fondly for many years by the U.S. soldiers away from home and by the young ladies who assisted in social events. She moved to Arizona in the early 1950's and resided at her home in Sun City until an assisted living facility was necessary in recent years. She had always been active in church activities and gave support to St. Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army and various food banks.

REID, Edna Lillia - 94, of Wolfville, NS, formerly of Newfoundland, passed away peacefully December 12, 2000 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Upper Gullies, Newfoundland, she was a daughter of the late William and Patience (Morgan) Harvey. She was a graduate of St. John's General Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in St. John's, Newfoundland until her retirement in 1979. She later moved to Wolfville where she resided until her death. She was an active member of the IODE for many years. She was a member of the St. John's Anglican Church, Wolfville. Surviving is a sister, Effie D. Oake (Chesley), Vero Beach, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Cyril W. Reid; brothers: Albert, Stanley, John and Chesley; sisters: Jemima and Emma. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Passed away peacefully at St. Clare's Hospital, Palliative Care, after a short illness, on Monday, December 11th, 2000, age 79 years. Predeceased by his wife Alice (nee Dillon), March 7th, 1987. Leaving to mourn sons; Robert Jr. (Laura) and John; daughters; Joan and Elaine, Mary (Stuart Rose), Scarborough, ON, Thomasine (Raymond Rose), St. Catherine's , ON, Sharon (David Brennan), Elizabeth (Samuel Gosse); twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; special sister-in-law; Mary Roy; a large circle of relatives and friends. Special thanks to Mr. Tom Forsey who was kind and very caring to our father in the past 8 years. Thank you to Palliative Care, nurses and staff at St. Clare's Hospital who were wonderful in supporting our father and our family. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, Monday 7-10 P.M. and Tuesday 10 A.M. - 10 P.M.. Funeral on Wednesday, December 13th, 2000 to St. Patrick's Church for Mass at 9:30 A.M.. Interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit St. Clare's Hospital.

Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on Thursday, December 28, 2000, Valda Williams (nee Learning), aged 77 years. Predeceased by her husband Arthur; her parents Ronald and Annie Maude Learning; brothers Don and Doug Learning. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, sons; Ron (June), Goulds and David (Donna), Cambridge, ON; daughter Heather Snow (Peter), St. John's; beloved grandchildren; Tracy, Doug and Keri Williams, Stephen Williams, Michael and Karen Snow. Also leaving to mourn brother William Learning (Phyllis) and Walter Learning (Marjorie); sisters-in-lawl; Pearl Learning, Martha Harding, Harriett Lambert, Olive Strugnell and Marina Janes; brother-in-law Gordon Williams (Rachel); nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Friday from 10 am - 12 noon, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.. Funeral Service to take place on Saturday, December 30, 2000 at 11 am from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Dear father of Marianne Hamilton and her husband Donald and Jim and his wife Elsie (nee Norris) of St. John's, Newfoundland. Loving grandpa of Stephen and Liz, Arthur and Pamela, and Patricia Hamilton and Wilfred and his fiancée Amy Jacobs, Richard and Matthew Wright. Dear great-grandpa of Kayla and Erik Hamilton. Dear brother of Grace, Bert and Myrtle Wright, Gertrude Hemphill, Jean Edwards and the late Lorne, Maurice and Dorothy Wright, and Bernice Taylor. Resting at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Avenue E., (east of Kennedy Road), Agincourt on Thursday 7-9 P.M. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 P.M.. For Funeral Service on Saturday at 11 A.M. at Wesley Chapel, Free Methodist Church, 2385 Warden Avenue (at Huntingwood Dr.), Scarborough. Interment Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
