AKSE, Eric Keith
Published: August 14, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eric Keith Akse who died unexpectedly on August 5, 2021 following an accident. He will be dearly missed by his loving partner, Delphine, his step-children, Adrien and Emmeline; his sister Jennie Akse-Kelly, her husband Greg Kelly, and their daughters, Anika and Leah. Also grieving are his sister Leslie Akse, her partner Barry Imber and their two sons, Remi and Desi. Eric grew up in Burlington, Ontario, spending summers at the Stevenson cottage at Hurds Lake. After serving in the Canadian Army Reserves as a medic, he graduated from McMaster University and went on to a career in healthcare. For many nurses and OTs across Newfoundland, he was "Eric from Arjo". He always had an adventurous spirit and loved travel and new experiences. He lived in Vancouver and in Korea before settling in Newfoundland (Maddox Cove and latterly in Mount Pearl). He was devoted to his family and to his dog, Soju. On sunny days he could be found exploring the trails of Newfoundland on his motorbike. On rainy or snowy ones he would be improving it or tinkering with other projects in the garage. He will be remembered for his humour, spirit of generosity, and his kindness to friends and strangers alike. To contact the family with messages of condolence or pictures and memories to share, please email EricDelphineAkse@gmail.com    Visitation will be on Saturday August 14 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Barrett's Funeral Home 328 Hamilton Avenue, St John's. BAUTISTA, Dr. Juanito S. MD
Published: August 09, 2021

Passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2021, in his 92nd year, Dr. Juanito S. Bautista MD, predeceased by his wife Aida C. Bautista, his sister Crecenciana and her son Roland, mother Agatona Santa Ana and father Santiago. Left with many fond memories, son Michael (Anne Macdonald, Lesley, Jennifer, Kathryn and their cousins Alex and Claire Riggs), daughter Dorothy "Donna" (Ken Milks, Gabby, Connor and Carrie), son John (Elizabeth Bautista, Emily, Megan, and Chloe), sister Eduviges Bautista, and nephews Pascual and Edgar Tangkengco. In 1956, Juanito graduated from medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. Juanito and Aida married in 1957, and later that year, with two suitcases each and little else in hand, emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA under a foreign graduate exchange visitors' program, where he went on to a thoracic surgical residency. After much reflection, he left that area of practice, and took his family to St. John's NL in 1962, where he began his career in the treatment of tuberculosis at the St. John's Sanitorium. The Bautistas became the second Filipino family in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, joining their relatives, the Cruz family, who were the first Filipino family. From 1965 until 1968, they returned to the United States, where Juanito worked primarily in the field of tuberculosis, but returned to St. John's to resume working at the Sanitorium as its Clinical Director. The Sanitorium was the main provincial TB referral hospital where patients would reside for an average of six months for TB treatment; he treated the whole variety of TB infections - lung, kidney and bone. When TB came under control, the province decided to close all sanitoria in 1972 and Juanito moved to St. Clare's where he worked on the Chest Unit, the last vestige of the old San, until his retirement in 1992, when it closed. During those twenty years, he became involved in teaching internal medicine and anesthesia residents during their respiratory rotations; his son Michael had the pleasure of working on that unit with him and Dr. Duncan Rice. Juanito was active in the Newfoundland Thoracic Society, the Newfoundland Lung Association and the Better Breathing Club, and was granted lifetime membership in the Newfoundland Lung Association in 1993. As a physician, Juanito was known to always have a smile, and to be a very kind and caring doctor. Former patients would often stop him in the mall or supermarket to say hello and he could remember many if not most of their names. As a husband, father and grandfather, he was loving, caring, dutiful and diligent. He drove children and then grandchildren where they had to go, whether it was school, university, gymnastics or music lessons. He was active in the Newfoundland Filipino Association. In the old days the annual meeting was held at his home, with Aida's delicious cooking as a treat. He supported his family in the Philippines, to whom he was known as "Daddy." He and Aida loved to visit family throughout Canada and the US. Always a stickler for detail, and gracious in his frank, blunt comments, Juanito remained as sharp as a tack, still balancing his chequebook without a calculator; keeping up to date with current events and golf on TV; remembering every birthday and anniversary and preparing the appropriate greetings cards a week in advance; and being critically instructive about the Filipino food Michael and his daughters made for him for their regularly scheduled Saturday lunches together. He generously supported his parish St. Pius X. With failing health and in the context of the pandemic, he attended Mass daily at home. Thank you to Dr. Lynn Dwyer for years of kind personalized care, and to all the staff from the Health Sciences who were there in the emergency department on his last day. Visitation will be at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's, NL on Sunday August 8, 2021, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Church at 9:30am Monday August 9. Internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations can be made to St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's, NL.

CORNISH, Cynthia Marie (nee Burton)
Published: August 28, 2021

In Loving Memory of Cynthia Marie Cornish (nee Burton). In her 74th year she was taken way too soon from us and leaves us heartbroken. Predeceased by her parents Vince and Margaret (nee Melvin) and three siblings, survived by 11 other siblings and being the eldest of all the girls, she was a strong and determined woman. Leaving home and heading out into the world she would bear 3 sons, Brian Michael (Angela), Harry Joshua Junior (Erin) and William Charles (Terri) and was so proud of them all. Brian and Junior provided her with the daughters she never had in granddaughters Emma, Madison, Sophie and Megan who she cherished and loved so much.
The summers the girls spent with their Nanny will always be remembered and especially the summer when we all visited Lamanche together. She will be missed by her numerous cousins from far and wide and the many lifelong friends that she had. Anyone that knew "Cynt" could attest to her straightforward ways, her laughter and huge heart. Bringing up 3 boys on her own was her biggest accomplishment and the three of us thank her for all her sacrifices throughout the years, so that we could become the strong, caring men we are today. She lived her final years where her heart was, back in Lamanche, just up the trail from where she would visit her grandmother when she was a child. Special thanks to those who were around to watch over her as she completed this part of her journey. You are forever in our hearts.

The family is so grateful to the medical staff on unit 4A South of the Health Sciences Centre who showed great kindness and compassion to Ernie during his final days and to the care staff at Chancellor Park for helping Ernie live with comfort and dignity during his final years. As was his wish, Ernie was cremated and a Private Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate his life was held at Holy Cross Church in Holyrood on Thursday, August 26th, 2021 at 10:30 am with interment to follow in the Crawley family plot at Holy Cross Cemetery, Holyrood. DALTON, Madonna
Published: August 10, 2021

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madonna Dalton, aged 77 years. Surrounded and supported by her daughters in her final days, Madonna passed peacefully away on Sunday, August 8, 2021 following a long journey through Alzheimer's disease. Madonna was predeceased by her loving husband, Mick; parents George and Mary Croft; brother George; sister Jean; and infant siblings Marion and Francis. Left with countless wonderful memories are her daughters whom she affectionately called her "girls" and their husbands: Hannah & Paul Dowden, Hedy & Wayne Kenny, Jean Anne & Barry Kavanagh, Maureen & Robert Nimz, and Mary & Sandy Oates; Grandchildren: Matthew (Alexa), Michael (Catherine), Sarah (Izzy), Noelle (Tommy), Kyle (Katherine), Nathan (Hannah), Mikayla, Ben, Aaron and Andrew; Great-grandchildren: Patrick, Lennon, Grace, William, Novalea, Ella, James and Aiden; Sisters: Eleanor (Sandy Powell) and Esther (Richard Barrett); Brother-in-law Edward Dalton and Sisters-in-law: Gert Dalton, Eileen Dalton, Ella Erwin and Marg Croft; as well as many treasured nieces, nephews, and friends including caregivers Barb, Gloria, Phyllis, Stella and staff at St. Luke's Home who showed such warmth and compassion during her last days. Madonna was born on November 28, 1943 in Aquaforte, NL to George and Mary Croft. She graduated from the General Hospital nursing program as a Nursing Assistant in February, 1963 and then worked at the General Hospital and The Children's Home. On September 21st she married Mick Dalton. Together they built a home and raised their five girls in Cape Broyle. Caring for others came easily to Madonna whose quiet and loving demeanor made those around her feel comfortable and loved. She returned to nursing later in life and worked at Hoyles Home long-term care facility. She enjoyed gardening and walking, and made the most delicious bread. In retirement, Madonna and Mick traveled Newfoundland with friends by boat and car, exploring and enjoying the island's beauty at every mile. They were happily married 44 years at the time of Mick's passing in 2008. Madonna was humble and modest, graceful and elegant. Her kindness, generosity and graciousness were immeasurable. She was a truly remarkable mother who taught her girls what it is to love and be loved. It's a love that she nurtured and strengthened throughout their lives. Indeed, it's a love she managed to show right to the end of her very long goodbye. Alzheimer's changed so much about how she was but it never changed who she was at her core. She was and will be ever remembered as a strong yet gentle, beautiful, and loving woman. It is very difficult to talk about her in the past because she remains so present in our lives. Resting at Fahey's Funeral home in Fermeuse on Tuesday, August 10 from 2:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral service from Church of the Immaculate Conception, Cape Broyle on Wednesday, August 11 at 11:00 am. Due to Covid restrictions the family would like those who wish to attend to contact by phone or text Maureen at 613-222-5529. Flowers gratefully accepted or memorial donations made to the Cape Broyle Cemetery Committee or the Alzheimer Society of NL.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barry on August 3, 2021 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Barry was predeceased by his father, David Gilbert. Left to mourn are his mother, Ethel Hodder, his sister Lynn Fisher (Bruce), his brothers Scott Gilbert (Dale) and Craig Gilbert (Stella). He will be very much missed by his nieces and nephews and many family and friends in Ontario and Newfoundland. Barry grew up in Newfoundland and lived there until he moved to Ontario to pursue his education at Georgian College. After graduating from the Automotive Business Program, Barry fulfilled his passion for cars by spending his working life in the automotive industry. Barry also loved dogs. He never met a dog that he did not like. And dogs felt the same way about Barry. It was not unusual to find Barry in a dog park surrounded by not only Dee, his beloved Labrador, but many other dogs as well. A private celebration of Barry's life will be held in Newfoundland at later date. As we cannot gather due to distance and COVID restrictions, the family would appreciate hearing any remembrances you have of Barry at https://www.arbormemorial.ca/en/kelly-carling/obituaries/barry-stephen-gilbert/69616   Please consider a donation to the SPCA or the Humane Society in memory of Barry.

Passed away peacefully after a long life filled with devotion to family, friends, Church and community Catherine Duggan Gregory born in 1924 in St. Joseph's, St Mary's Bay to William and Ellen (Daley) Duggan. Predeceased by her husband Peter, son Albert, all her siblings Peter, Phonse, Tony, and Jack (Laura) Duggan, Maud (Ed) Greening and Nancy (Mike) Dunn and other in-laws of the Gregory family. Leaving to mourn with loving memories are her immediate family: Wallace, Randy (Donna), Elizabeth, Tim (Tracey), Janet (David), Mary, and Conrad (Kimberley); grandchildren and great-grandchildren Adam and Denise Templeton (Isaac and Arthur), Paul Templeton and Heidi Williams (Isabelle), Colin Dick and Patrick, Charles, Josh and Liam Gregory (his mother Ruth Mandeville); sisters-in-law Nora Duggan, Eileen Gregory and Muriel Gregory; a large circle of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; as well as many long-time friends from her community and Church. The door was always open in our home on Empire Avenue in St John's where Mom welcomed many visitors for an after-school (or university) snack, quick supper or cup of tea with home-baked bread and treats. Catherine attended both St Brides College Littledale and Memorial College to become a teacher, following which she taught school in her home community for many years and then in Deer Lake. She traveled to the United States to visit relatives in Boston and Atlantic City, where she worked briefly, and in the early 1950s worked at the American Air Force Base in Goose Bay, Labrador. Catherine married in 1955 and raised her eight children for the next decades, and as a former school teacher, insisted on education as a priority. She also instilled a deep sense of generosity and family connection through many visits with our relatives throughout Newfoundland and beyond, as host or traveller -- everyone was welcome and meals and beds were shared as needed. Mom was a volunteer throughout that period and active in schools and at the Basilica which became a focus in her later years, after Dad's passing. She volunteered with many groups including the Monitor, Catholic Women's League, Baptism Preparation, and as a Eucharistic Minister. In the last 30 years Mom never missed an opportunity to take a walk, play a game of cards, join a trip to Toronto, Ireland, PEI, Ottawa for Canada Day, or drive across the country to Vancouver - she was game for it all. She truly enjoyed gatherings with family and friends and especially cherished spending time with her grandchildren. Sincere thanks to the staff of Tiffany Village, especially the 4th Floor Staff, for their kindness and caring of Mom over the past four years. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Good Shepherd Parish, St. Joseph's, P. O. Box 30, St Mary's Bay A0B 3AO (or online at GSparish.ca) or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Barret's Funeral Home, Hamilton Avenue and details will be provided on the Barrett's website.

HEALEY, Loretta
Published: August 14, 2021

"She is no longer here... and the night wrapped it's arms around us and all the white stars turned bitter with grief" It is with that very grief and great sadness that we announce that our dear mother, Loretta, who was the centre of our lives, passed away on August 5, 2021 after a century of life well lived and loved. She is predeceased by her husband Alexander (Sandy) Healey who passed away in 1979, her parents Nora and Peter Mullins, her sister Maude Butler and brother-in-law Cyril Butler of Marystown, and son-in-law Charlie Richardson. Leaving behind a large family that she adored; her daughters Phyllis Marie (Martha), Patricia, Alexandra, Mary Cook (Doug), Anne Richardson (late Charlie Richardson) and her sons Gerald (Karen) of Ontario, Fred, Eric (Diane) Ottawa, and Peter (lizzie) of Toronto; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. Loretta celebrated the amazing milestone of her 100th birthday on July 11, 2021 surrounded by her loving family... she was in her element. Born in Marystown, July 11, 1921, she and her sister Maud grew up in an idyllic environment, a life that was simple, full of love, fun and community. She bravely ventured out for work as a young woman, first moving to Sydney N.S. to work and then to Argentia, again for work, where she then met the love of her life, our dad, Sandy (Alexander) Healey. They married in 1944 and moved to St. John's where Sandy worked at the CNR, while mom focused on raising their family of 9 children. Her Catholic faith sustained her through the many challenges and changes she experienced throughout her lifetime. Her devotion to her faith as a parishioner of St. Teresa's Church on Mundy Pond for 77 years is inspiring - having spent 25 of those years volunteering for the altar guild. Many of the altar cloths seen in the church today were made by her own loving hands. She loved to sing and was a member of the Silver Chords choir who performed in churches and Christmas concerts at various locations. Of course, Mom's proudest achievement is that of a devoted wife to Sandy, and a loving mother to her 9 children, all of whom are alive, well and prospering. She was the axis, the hub around which her children orbited up to her final days. She attributed her long life to good living, a healthy lifestyle, hard work and daily prayer. We witnessed with awe, her incredible resilience, fierce determination and independence, especially over the past 18 months of health challenges. She simply would not give up. There are so many to thank for the love and care of our mom over the years - especially - Dr. Mabel Greene as her family doctor for many years, Dr. Kravitz for her loving attention, and Maico Hearing for their years of dedicated service to Mom. Thank you also to Dr. Au and Dr. Brad King. The staff at The Residence at Littledale where Mom resided in her final year went beyond providing outstanding care of our mother, to that of genuinely cherishing her, anointing her as the "Queen of Littledale". She loved the daily visits and banter with staff, and felt so loved. For that we are deeply grateful. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home on Hamilton Avenue on Monday, August 16th from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Funeral to take place at St Theresa's Parish on Tuesday, August 17th at 11am. Due to limited capacity, the funeral service will be by invitation only. The funeral service will be lived streamed for those wishing to attend virtually at https://tom0349.wixsite.com/streamingservices/barretts    Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In memory of Mom and Dad the family will have a bench installed at Mundy Pond Trail so please visit and sit quietly to reflect on the love of these amazing parents. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory to be made to The Gathering Place. To view online guestbook or leave a message of condolence, please visit www.barretts.ca

1960 - 2021

On Friday, August 20th, John Joseph Houlihan of St. Albert, Alberta left this earth at the age of 61 years. To those of us who knew, befriended or loved him, he was Jack. Jack cherished his family. Carrying on his memory are his wife of 37 years and soulmate, Carol; children: Andrea (Bennett), Leanne (James), James (Lauren), and the sparkle to his day, grandson, Blake. Jack joins his parents, Brendan and Neitha; in-law's, Hugh and Norma; brothers, Adrian, Brendan Jr. and Jerome in Heaven. He'll be deeply missed by his remaining brothers; Edward (Kathy), Adrian, Jim (Paula), Mike, and Brian (Shawn); sisters, Andrea (Mike), Elaine (Steve), Sharon (Lambert), Yvonne (Marcel), Karen (Les), Debbie (John), and Renee (Troy); sister-in-law, Patti (Paul); brother's-in-law, Bob, David, Dale (Connie) Darcy (Martine), Darren (Connie), and father-in-law, Don (Burnette), as well as countless nieces and nephews. Throughout his life, Jack bonded with folks with the same ease at which he excelled at sports. Whether it was during his successful career rising through the ranks in the confectionary wholesale industry, or whipping the ball around the softball diamond, Jack's charm and good humour won him the friendship and admiration of many. Jack spent many years living in Western Canada, but his Newfoundland roots were strong. One could swear he only had to close his eyes to smell the salt air or hear waves hitting shore. When he headed West, he took with him a delightful knack for story and joke telling. Thankfully, he continued to share those stories and jokes with his buddies back on the Rock. He never forgot home. He never forgot his buddies, East or West. Jack's decline was swift following diagnosis of liver cancer. Not long after a magnificent day of story and song, surrounded at home by family and friends (his live wake as requested), Jack's fate was soon in the hands of the devoted staffs at Sturgeon General Hospital and Foyer Lacombe Hospice. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to them all, for their care and compassion. Jack chose to be cremated. His ashes will be taken to Newfoundland at a later date where he will be laid to rest. Details of a Celebration of Life in St. Albert will be shared soon. Memorial donations may be made in Jack's memory to assist his family through a GoFundMe account established at https://gofund.me/f2580b8f   To quote, the lyrics of Richard Hartley, a songwriter with whom Jack grew up with in the Placentia area, "Now and again, when I'm feeling lonely, I'll think of you and I'll smile." Jack lived his life with a smile. It's only fitting to remember him with one. To send condolences, please visit www.fostermcgarvey.com Foster & McGarvey Funeral Home St. Albert (780) 419-6666

INKPEN, Corinne Joyce
Published: August 28, 2021
(June 20, 1927 - Aug 20, 2021)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Corinne Joyce Inkpen (nee Angel) on August 20, 2021. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 62 years, Stan Inkpen, her parents, Heber and Joyce (Dunfield) Angel, her sister, Louise Eaton & brother-in-law, Marsh Bursey. Leaving to mourn are her sister, Suzanne Bursey and brother-in-law, Alistair Eaton. Mom will be forever missed by her children, Susan (Colin) Simms, Steve (Kathy) Inkpen and Janine Inkpen, as well as by her nine grandchildren, Stephanie Dearing, Daniel and Jesse Simms, Andrew, Lane and Hayley Inkpen, Chelsea Eason, Brittany Rowsell and Alannah Green and her five great-grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. Mom was born in 1927, the second of 3 girls. She was greatly influenced by both her parents, her father being an avid sportsman and outdoor enthusiast and her mother, a student of classical music and the piano. We all enjoyed the stories of her childhood, as it was one filled with a rich history and many funny anecdotes. And she told them so well! As a teenager, Mom travelled across the Atlantic to stay a year with her aunt at her flat in London. Skiing the Alps, dining with the Archbishop of York and being approached for a screen test for a movie were some of the experiences we loved to hear about. When back in St John's, Mom "caught" Dad on a blind date fishing trip which led to a long and happy marriage, with many more ups than downs. They bought land at Nine Island Pond which they cleared themselves to build the country place, where us children and the grandchildren formed long lasting connections that they will carry forever in their hearts. Using her great eye for detail and her artistic skills, she painted many beautiful scenic pictures of Newfoundland, as she was nothing if not a proud Newfoundlander. Believe it or not, you could never convince Mom the weather was better somewhere else! In her latter years after Stan's passing, she spent hours connecting with her grandchildren by texting on her iPhone, as mom was always willing to try to adopt new ways of doing things. She loved talking to them about their lives and future plans. Mom always said she learned more from her children than they did from her. We know this is not entirely true, drawing from mom's strength and influence every day. She loved her family with a fierce passion that was an example to us all. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family gathering at a later date. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com
Mom is finally more than 'a pinch better'. Rest in peace dear Mom

.
With the same quiet strength and grace she lived her life, Elizabeth Louise Pike passed peacefully away at home surrounded by her family and their love on August 12, 2021. Mom was born 90 years ago to John and Elizabeth Jamieson in St. John's. In 1960, Mom married the love of her life, Richard Pike with whom she celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past October. Together they created a loving home for their two children, Kathy and Ken. Mom was so much to so many but she was most devoted to being an incredibly supportive wife; a loving and gentle mother who was always available to us; an adoring and indulgent Nana to her beloved Scott and Christopher Henderson; and a proud Great Nana to her darling great-granddaughter, Stella Betty, her namesake whom she absolutely cherished. For Mom, family was her world and her every decision and loving gesture revolved around our happiness. She was also a caring and loyal friend to her "Juniper Lake crowd" and her lifelong friends who were so special to her. Mom's devotion to her mother, siblings, and her pride in her numerous nieces and nephews was outstanding. Mom's legacy is the kind, fierce yet gentle love she bestowed on all who were blessed enough to know her. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Richard, daughter Kathy (Lorne Henderson), son Kenneth, grandsons Scott (Natelle Murphy) and Chris Henderson (Monika Palinkas) and great-granddaughter Stella Betty. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Robert Pike (Olivia) and sister-in-law, Lorna (Clouter), nieces and nephews she thought of as her own. Her remarkable and loving caregivers, Mary Bradley and Yodit Tsagai will always be part of our family. Our gratitude for their amazing care and love for Mom is heartfelt and eternal. You, together with her cherished friend and hairdresser, Linda Ryan, were her angels here on earth. Mom is predeceased by her parents, brothers Ed (Joan), Alex (Mary), John (Marg), Walt (Phyllis), Andrew (Doris) and sister, Sister Elizabeth Jamieson as well as her Pike brothers and sisters in law. Arrangements are under the care of Carnell's Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Monday, August 16 from 2-4 and 7-9. The Memorial Service will be held at 11 am at Carnell's Chapel on Tuesday, August 17 followed by internment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Our gratitude is also extended to those who assisted Mom during her final days and hours: Suzanne Condon, nurse practitioner; Father David Louch, and from the End of Life Support Team. In the presence and loving support of his family, John Philip Powell died peacefully at the Health Science Centre on Sunday August 29th, 2021 at the age of 58. He was predeceased by his mother Audrey (Abbott) Powell in 1994 and his step-mother Bertha (Pike) Powell in 2015. John is survived by his father George H Powell, daughter Maria Powell, her husband Matt Eagles and granddaughter Anne-Marie (5 months) in Calgary, son Joshua and wife Jay Powell in Yellowknife, daughter Allison and their mother Anna McCarthy Powell in St. John's, and brother Rev. The family moved back to St. John's in 1977, where John was welcomed on moving day by a neighbour John Bonnell, who soon became a lifelong friend. John's family had a love of music and a strong commitment to helping others. His passion for music led him to attend MUN Music School where he developed many lifelong and meaningful friendships. John taught music in the NL school system for 20 years, where he passed on his passion for music to his students. Over the years he played in numerous bands including rock and jazz bands, church music groups, and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band. John became the Director of Music for the Regiment and attained rank of Captain. He led the Band on a number of pilgrimages to the Battlefields of Europe, including Beaumont Hamel, Ypres and Vimy. He also directed the Canadian Forces Atlantic Area Band and the Field Artillery Band in New Brunswick. It was not uncommon for him to provide meals, goods and services to those in need and to help them feel they were heard and supported. He always had and anecdote, photo or happy memory to share with neighbours and friends. He was also very proud of his family, especially his three children. Passed peacefully away on Friday, August 27, 2021 at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls, NL, George Rex Primmer, 87. Leaving with fond and cherished memories are his beloved wife Betty (nee Mullins), proud children Brenda, Bev (Doug McKee), Karl (Mary) and Steve, much loved grandchildren Ryan McKee, Dan and Sam Primmer, sisters Molly Leonchuk and Olwen, sisters-in-law Daphne Blackwood, Marg Simms (Dave) and brothers-in-law Jack Mullins (Helen), Gerry Mullins (Sadie) and Steve Mullins as well as many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents George and Louise, brother Keith, son David, sister-in-law Jean Mullins and brothers-in-law Mac Blackwood and Bill Leonchuck. Rex was born in Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island in 1934. After attending Memorial University Rex settled in Gander, NL in 1953 where he met and married Betty and started a family. He enjoyed a lengthy career with Pan American Airlines, Allied Aviation, Eastern Provincial Airways, Canadian Airlines and Air Canada. He retired from the aviation industry in 1988 only to begin a new career as a guide pursing his true passions - salmon fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Rex enjoyed fishing on the Gander River and in Labrador, fly tying, rod building, hunting in Kaegudeck and snowmobiling all the corners of the island and was fortunate enough to continue doing what he loved every day of his life. While he spent considerable time in the pursuit of salmon, Rex spent as much time instructing others on the finer points of fly fishing, making fishing rods for friends or tying thousands of salmon flies that he regularly delivered to the lucky each year. A conversation with Rex rarely did not involve, at some point, discussing some aspect of fishing or the outdoors. While Rex was an accomplished outdoors man he was also an outgoing man who had many friends that he and Betty regularly gathered and travelled with. Trips to other parts of the island, other provinces and the United States were a regular occurrence. Special thanks are extended to the nurses of Unit 2A and the ICU of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre and to Drs. Kamel, Price and House for their exceptional care and support. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held Tuesday August 31st 11- 6. There will be a private family gathering at a later date. SHORT, Robin
Published: September 01, 2021
January 12, 1965 - August 29, 2021

Baseball Great Ted Williams said, "You have to hit the fastball to play in the big leagues." Robin John Short did just that. Award-winning Sports Editor of The Telegram for 36 years, he was a consummate journalist and respected writer within sports communities at the provincial, national, and international levels. Professionally, Robin did play in the big leagues, attending and covering NHL Drafts, NHL Winter Classics, Olympic Games, and other historical moments in sport. Robin witnessed Team Gushue's Gold Medal win in 2006, Danny Cleary's Stanley Cup Victory in 2008, and Sidney Crosby's Golden Goal in 2010, to name a few. He was a published author, wrote for major sporting websites and publications, was a radio correspondent for TSN and a colour commentator for Rogers Television and VOCM for the St. John's IceCaps and Growlers. The sports world has lost a prolific journalist but the deeper loss is for his loving family and friends. His greatest title was "Dad" to his son Cameron. He was the best husband to Kim - together they called themselves 'the Three Musketeers'. He was a loving son to Mary. Their hearts are shattered but they are comforted by their beautiful life together and the overwhelming outpouring of tributes and support. Robin Short was a good man. He had razor sharp wit and a quick sense of humour. He loved his family fiercely and was a loyal, devoted friend. His home was his haven where he enjoyed an open fire, 80's music, family game nights, and a good glass of wine. His man cave was his domain and his collection of sports memorabilia was the envy of many. He loved hosting shed nights with his friends and colleagues. Robin was very well-read, well-travelled, and drove all over North America (often without a map). Robin was an athlete who enjoyed a game of baseball, softball, squash, golf, and weekly hockey nights with long time buddies. Robin was a coach and mentor to youth in baseball, basketball, and hockey. He believed in children having an opportunity to play sports, and collaborated with corporate and sport organizations to start A-C level teams, tournaments, and leagues for love of a game. Robin passed away on Sunday morning, August 29, 2021 surrounded by the loves of his life - his wife Kim, his son Cameron and his mother Mary. He was 56 years old. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with visitation on Tuesday, August 31 and Wednesday, September 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Corpus Christi Church, Waterford Bridge Road at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 2 followed by inurnment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In saying that we are setting up speakers outside so those who can't join us inside will still be able to listen to the service. We are limiting inside the Church to immediate family, Aunts and uncles with their spouses, first cousins (no spouses). If there is any additional space inside the church we will be able to invite others inside to join. We really want to thank everyone for the support during this very difficult time. The Stamp Family

STIRLING, Jean Carter
Published: August 28, 2021
Jean Carter Stirling
passed peacefully August 19, 2021 with her children at her side, just days after her 98th Birthday. Born August 15, 1923 in St. John's, Jean stayed lifelong friends with classmates from the Rockford school, Bishop Spencer College, and Havergal College (Toronto). Yearbooks show Jean as Games Captain, writer, puzzle solver, well loved classmate, known for her jokes and laughter. That theme continued throughout her life. Upon returning from Toronto in 1942, she worked with the Royal Navy as a secret code and cypher clerk, never able to divulge what she learned. After the war, Jean used her writing, editing, and organizational skills working in Montreal and St. John's, including at the Evening Telegram and The Sunday Herald. She married in 1947, had two children, Scott and Anne. Following her divorce Jean moved her family to the southern United States, returning to Canada in 1961. As a single parent, Jean settled in Halifax, and worked in media and production, including as a script assistant at CBC, hosting lively parties for her colleagues. Jean's household often comprised a series of billeted local and international students and travelers, providing diversity and interest. In her 40s, Jean went back to school and got her BA from Dalhousie in 1970, graduating the same summer she had heart surgery. Jean and her daughter drove to Toronto where she completed her M. Ed in Counseling from the University of Toronto, 1973. Returning to Halifax, Jean worked at Mount St. Vincent as a counsellor and continued in that field till her move to Toronto in the early 1980s. Being socially responsible, Jean got active in recycling, eco-friendly endeavors and volunteering at the Food Bank, continuing this advocacy throughout her life. She returned to St. John's in 1990 always feeling Newfoundland was home. Her family, genealogy research, dart playing, and square dancing were some of her great passions. An avid reader, researcher, bridge player, advocate and curious soul, Jean never stopped being open to meeting new people, learning, and making a contribution. She has left to mourn countless friends and family…children Anne, Scott (Judy) and grandchildren Jesse (Amanda and great granddaughter Olivia), Geoffrey, Lydia McLaughlin (Doug and great grandchildren Stirling, Maverick, Roman). Cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at The Carnell Memorial Chapel on September 9 at 2 pm and will be livestreamed. Please visit www.carnells.com for the link, and to sign the memorial guestbook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Food Sharing Association (cfsa.nf.net)
