God knew that
she was suffering,
That the hills were
hard to climb,
So He closed her weary eyelids,
And whispered
"Peace Be Thine"
Away in the
beautiful hills of God,
By the valley of rest so fair,
Some time, some day,
we know not when,
We will meet our
love one there.

BYRNE, Cyril Joseph, C.M., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus - 66, passed away
in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, on August 16, 2006, after a 15
month struggle with cancer. He was born in Corner Brook, NL, the son of
the late George and Bridget (Cole) Byrne. He is survived by his former
wife, Leona Delvallet, Halifax, who provided valuable care in his final
year; their children: John, Joseph and Marie; by Sibylle Bechtold, Lunenburg
and their children: Padraig and Tobias. He is also survived by his sister,
Marie (Rupert) Gross, Toronto; his mother's sister, Mary, Newfoundland;
and his father's remaining siblings and in-laws: Florence O'Reilly, Wolfville,
Theresa (Walter Wall), Kevin Byrne and Jim Byrne (Marg), Ula Byrne, Sheila
Byrne, Newfoundland; and many cousins. He is remembered fondly by Laurie
Mireau, Halifax; university colleagues, former students and numerous friends.
An alumnus of St. Dunstan's University (Prince Edward Island), the National
University of Ireland (Dublin), Oxford University and the University of
Toronto, he was named Professor Emeritus last year when he retired from
the English Department at Saint Mary's University after 35 years of service.
He was instrumental in founding both the Atlantic Canada Studies program
in 1975 and the Chair of Irish Studies 10 years later. An unusually gifted
oral reader and performer of literary texts, Dr. Byrne was noted for his
radio broadcast work as well as his magnetic classroom personality. He
could animate Chaucer, Shakespeare, James Joyce, and the centuries of literature
and music in between. Decades of students remain in his debt, especially
those who took his classes in Shakespeare, Irish Literature and Newfoundland
Studies, areas where he also focused his research. He was an outstanding
scholar of Newfoundland and its connections with Ireland, and he leaves
a rich legacy in this field. Besides numerous publications, he contributed
much to the Atlantic Canada Institute and other regional organizations.
An energetic convener of conferences and a leader in national learned societies,
including the Canadian Association of Irish Studies, he also served as
regional representative on the Social Studies and Humanities Research Council.
As Coordinator of Irish Studies at Saint Mary's, he worked unstintingly
in a remarkably successful campaign to raise funds for the Chair. His achievements
in the study and maintenance of Irish traditions in Canada were honoured
in 1993 when he was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada. Cyril
had an unflagging enthusiasm and zest for life. His passion for travel
brought him abroad, often with his children; he kept his family ties with
Newfoundland and conducted lifelong field studies in his native province.
At home in Halifax, he loved being surrounded by family and friends, engaging
in small talk as well as debates on world affairs. He loved music, the
theatre, visiting the market on Saturday, and cooking for a full house.
Cyril was at ease with the prominent, but he had the gift of the common
touch. He was a generous friend, a stimulating teacher, a loyal colleague,
and a devoted and loving parent. He will be missed by all for his warmth
and his humour. We shall not see his like again. Visitation hours will
be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home,
2032 Robie St., Halifax. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Basilica on Saturday,
August 19 at 10 a.m. Reception will be held in Saint Mary's University
Theatre. Burial at a later date. Donations to the D'Arcy McGee Chair of
Irish Studies, Saint Mary's University, Halifax, NS, B3H 3C3, would honour
Cyril's memory in a way that will continue his legacy. E-mail condolences
may be sent to cruikshankhalifaxfh@alderwoods.com

MCKEE, G. Ross Jr. - Ross McKee, educator, columnist, philanthropist,
died on Saturday, August 19, 2006, at his beloved Avondale Newfoundland
summer home. He was 93 years of age.
Born on August 10, 1913, in New York City, Ross moved to Key West in 1974
and became an active member of the community. He was a founder and life
member of the Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust, whose environmental objects
include preserving the salt ponds and the hardwood hammocks of the Keys.
He served on the board of the Key West Art and Historical Society as public
relations chair. He established the Christine McKee - Margo Golan Park
behind the East Martello Museum. In 2001, Ross was the recipient of the
Florence Recher Award for community service.
Writing under the pen name of D.J. Swift, Ross wrote a national affairs
column in the Key West Citizen for thirteen years beginning in 1980. He
was also a contributing columnist to Solares Hill and the Island News.
Ross's keen intellectual interests were reflected in a formidable knowledge
of science, business, sports, politics - in short - virtually everything.
His witty and informative columns enlightened and entertained his readers.
Ross's pride in being a Democrat was in keeping with his genuinely democratic
heart and pursuit of social justice.
Ross attended Collegiate and Lawrenceville Schools and graduated from Princeton
University in 1935. He was a devout attendee of Princeton reunions into
his nineties. He was honored to attend his 71st reunion in 2006 as the
President of the Class of '35. Ross maintained a life-long commitment to
education. He taught economics in high school in New Canaan, CT for ten
years. Ross was a popular volunteer teacher at the Key West High School
teaching classes in poetry, history, and international relations, to name
a few. After funding many prior scholarships, in 2000, Ross created an
annual scholarship in his name for Key West High School students entering
university.
Ross started working as a copy boy at the New York Daily News and concluded
his business career as public affairs director of the Columbia Gas System.
In World War II, he served in Burma with the Second Air Commando Group
and subsequently with the Air Intelligence Reserve, attaining the rank
of Lt. Colonel. He served on the staff of the Military Order of the World
Wars and on its National Education Committee.
Ross enjoyed his memberships in the Overseas Press Club, the Retired Officers
Association, the Old Island Restoration Foundation, the TWFAC Founders
Society, and the American Museum of Natural History. He had a special fondness
for his membership in the Arcturus Club of Key West.
Only in later years did Ross permit his name to be associated with the
many associations whom he had supported "anonymously." He contributed
to many organizations, including Princeton University, the Collegiate and
Lawrenceville Schools, the Florida Keys Community Foundation, the Red Barn
Theatre, the Waterfront Playhouse, and in particular, the Florida Keys
Land and Sea Trust. Ross's philanthropy traveled with him. In Newfoundland,
Ross's financial assistance, given in his mother's name, enabled Planned
Parenthood to obtain independent premises. He was a contributor to the
Roncalli High School in Avondale.
Despite his slight frame, Ross was proud to be a member of the Princeton
Wrestling Team. He was a respectable tennis player and an accomplished
fisherman. He rooted for the Key West baseball and basketball teams. Ross
and his "lovely wife" of thirty years, Anne, shared a life of
travel, attended theatre and music productions, and thoroughly enjoyed
Key West life. If it was happening in Key West, Ross and Anne were there.
Ross gave to his country, to his community, and to his family and friends.
We will cherish his unassuming nature and unfailing good humor. We will
miss his stories and always be inspired by his largesse.
Ross McKee is survived by his wife, Anne (nee Hennessey of Avondale); daughters,
Joan McKee Hill and Barbara McKee-Phoutz; sons Drew and Hayward; stepdaughter,
The Hon. Marie Corbett; stepsons, John Corbett and Brian Corbett; nine
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Ross's family appreciate the attentive and responsive health care given
to Ross by Drs. Eli Gerth and Gil Shapiro in Key West and by Drs. H. Russell
Lake and Paul Walsh in Avondale. Many good friends provided gentle and
loving home care and assistance in Avondale. We give special thanks to
Lorraine McDonald, Beth Dalton, and Annette Butland.
Memorial services in Key West at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and in Avondale
will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
that donations be made to the Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust. Please visit
www.dunphysfuneralhome.com to sign the memorial guest book or to send a

THOMAS, Thora Patricia - T. Patricia Thomas, formerly
of Mabou, NS and St. Anthony NL. passed away in Halifax Thursday
morning, August 31, 2006. Born March 17, 1920 in Montreal, PQ,
daughter of Lawrence and Hazel Lister, she was educated at Mount Royal
High School in Montreal and Sir George Williams College, where she received
an Associate Degree in Commerce. As a young adult, she was an avid sportswoman,
excelling in tennis and horse riding. She was active in InterVarsity
Christian Fellowship and volunteered as a camp counselor for underprivileged
children. In May 1944, she was married to Gordon W Thomas MD. In August
1946, they went to St. Anthony, Newfoundland to join the International
Grenfell Association. There, she quickly became involved in community
work and was the consummate hostess, welcoming visitors, staff, volunteers
and dignitaries alike to her home. She contributed significantly to the
running of the Charles Curtis Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop and the Grenfell
Mission clothing store. She helped create the Grenfell Historical Society
and was instrumental in establishing Grenfell House as a museum. Her
desire to contribute to the work of the Grenfell Mission and her flair
for interior decorating (including a diploma from the Chicago School
of Interior Decoration) were evident in her many years as a volunteer,
furnishing staff quarters for the Grenfell Mission houses and apartments
in St Anthony. She was a devoted mother and supporter of youth. She organized
a pre-school for her own children and residents of the Children's Home
in St. Anthony and taught Sunday school for many years. She was active
in the CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training) and was instrumental in starting
Girl Guides and Brownies for whom she became District Commissioner of
St. Anthony District in 1958. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas moved to Mabou, Cape
Breton in 1976 where they began second careers in community and medical
service. Mrs. Thomas helped her husband write the memoirs of their adventures
with the Grenfell Mission (published as "From Sled to Satellite")
and assisted in running a medical office from their home. She devoted
her summers to family and grandchildren. She was an active supporter
of community life in Mabou, as a member of the Hillsborough UC Ladies
Aid Society, the Inverness Hospital Auxiliary and the local figure skating
club. She was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1977 and was a member
of the Vanier Family Institute. Following the death of her husband in
1996, their family home and property in Mabou were donated to L'Arche
Cape Breton. The house is used as a residence for adults with developmental
disabilities and was recently renamed "Thomas House" in memory
of the many years of dedicated service that Dr. and Mrs. Thomas provided
to those in need. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years. She
is survived by sister Ruth Denton of Costa Rico and children Patricia
(David) Simpson of Potomac, MD; Leonard (Margaret) Thomas of Corner Brook
