COX, Janet - It is with great sadness that the family of Janet Cox announce her passing on April 24th, 2015, at the Miller Center in St John's. Janet had bravely borne the impact of lung cancer for several months. She leaves her mother, Pat and brother, Jeff in England, and a wide circle of close friends and medical colleagues throughout Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia and along Quebec's Lower North Shore. Janet was widely loved and respected throughout the region for her tireless service to the medical needs of so many people for over forty years. She first came to work for the International Grenfell Association in St Anthony in 1970, having qualified as a registered nurse and midwife in her native England. Janet first worked as a staff nurse and midwife on the obstetrical unit at the Charles C. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St Anthony and later went on to attain diplomas in Outpost Nursing and Public Health Nursing from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. Janet spent many years providing frontline health care to a number of small, isolated coastal settlements along the Lower North Shore of Quebec, first in Harrington Harbour and then for almost twenty years in Kegaska, near Natashquan, where she became an integral part of the community. In the early 1990s, she moved to Goose Bay as assistant director of nursing for the Grenfell Regional Health Services northern nursing stations. But it was her years working closely with families in these isolated communities that Janet came to realize the impact that specific types of cancer was having on certain families. Her relationship with the families, her detective work and her careful research and documentation of their medical histories led Janet to suspect that there was a genetic cause to the high incidence and premature mortality from colon cancer - Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC). Janet moved back to St Anthony where, in consultation with Dr. William Fitzgerald, they established life-saving screening programs for those at highest risk. This resulted in the discovery and surgical removal of many cancers at an early, even pre-cancerous, stage. Janet's leadership in moving such studies from the realm of clinical research to practical clinical care has had a beneficial impact on the lives of countless patients and their families. Today, more than a thousand individuals are involved in the screening program. Janet was a modest and caring person who did not seek public recognition. So it was to the delight of so many of her friends and colleagues that in October 2012, Janet was among eight individuals awarded the highest honour that can be bestowed in the province, the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, for her outstanding services to the community. She retired from full-time work in December 2013. Janet's family and friends wish to thank Dr. Hurley, her medical colleagues and the volunteer staff in the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Center for their constant and considerate care over the past few weeks. The funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road, St John's at 11 am on Tuesday, April 28th, 2015. A Letter to our Mom:
Mom,
We want to thank you for all that you have done for us, for your relentless devotion to our well-being and for all of the lessons that you have endowed upon us throughout our lives - perhaps never more so than in the difficult struggle that you so courageously faced in the last six months of your life - to never be callous or indifferent, to be kind and earnest, to love unconditionally with all of our hearts, to never succumb to weakness and to persevere regardless of the obstacles that may be thrown in our paths, to soothe suffering with laughter, to live passionately and bravely. Despite these lessons, we ask you to please forgive us today and in the days that follow our surrender to grief and our profound sorrow that you are no longer with us but know that we will face tomorrow and each day thereafter with all of that you have so gracefully taught us, with your hands upon our shoulders and your heart in our hearts. We are so very proud to be your children and we will miss you terribly.
"Say not in grief she is no more but live in thankfulness that she was" - Hebrew Proverb

KENNEDY (nee Morgan), Mary Winnifred (Winnie) - (October 28, 1932 - April 6, 2015) Her family are so saddened to announce that a loving wife, mother, unwavering friend and fine example to follow has passed away: Winnie Kennedy. She passed peacefully on Monday April 6, 2015 at the age of 82 at the Palliative Care Unit of the Dr. L. A. Miller Centre, St. John's. She was formerly a long time resident of Long Pond, Conception Bay South as well as Bell Island, Labrador City and St. John's. Winnie fought and won two wars with cancer: the first in 1992; the second in 1996. This third time cancer struck the final blow but not without a mighty fight. Given a prognosis of just a few weeks, Winnie battled instead over the course of several months: cancer may have broken her body but never, ever tarnished her faith, spirit, nor will. In the end, satisfied that her work on this earth was finally complete, she simply closed her eyes and moved on.
Winnie was predeceased by her parents Henry and Ellen Jane Morgan (Seal Cove, CBS) as well as her brothers Chesley and Robert, infant daughter Kennedy, granddaughter Heather Marie Kennedy and daughter-in-law Debbie Kennedy. She is leaving to mourn - but also to remember and celebrate her time on this earth - her adoring husband of 58 years, Edwin C. (Ed) Kennedy, sons Donald (Elizabeth), Dave (Cynthia), Gary (Julie) and daughter Jennifer Hughes (Michael). In addition, she leaves six grandchildren: Keith, Ryan, Natasha, Samantha, Alexander and Andrew.
Winnie was a friend to everyone she met: A very short time after recovering from cancer surgery in August of 1992, she became a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society where she visited other people newly diagnosed with breast cancer - to lend an empathetic ear, a shoulder to lean on and a smile. She proudly wore her "yellow shirt" and walked many a survivors' lap at Relays for Life. She always had a nod and a wink and such a quick wit - her comic timing impeccable. She carried on, unwavered, through a second battle with a different type of cancer in 1996. She never missed a beat. She was a born helper and she did that right to her final breath. She was her family's biggest fan and strongest advocate. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to all who ever played a role in Winnie's circle of care as well as the staff of Admiral's Coast Retirement Centre in Kelligrews, where she spent the last three years beside her beloved Ed. Visitation in the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews on Tuesday from 3 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm. and Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm. Funeral service to take place on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 11 am from St. Peter's Anglican Church, Upper Gullies. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, Upper Gullies. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Winnie's memory to the Newfoundland Labrador branch of the Canadian Cancer Society or The Children Wish Foundation.
