ALCOCK, Jean B. - Passed peacefully away at Glenbrook Lodge on Saturday, April 11, 2009 surrounded by those she loved, Jean B. Alcock (nee Lindsay) in her 96th year. Predeceased by her husband Arthur (Hap) in 1998. Jean felt great pride in her family, and loved them unselfishly, as mother to David (Gwen) and Bill (Marliese); grandmother (Nana) to Bruce (Tina), Vancouver, Lindsay Glynn (Bob), Erin and Philip (Courtenay), Topsail; great-grandmother (Nana Jean) to Alex and Nathan (Topsail), Olivia and Otto (Vancouver); sister to Bill Lindsay, Paradise and Elizabeth Palmer, P.E.I.; aunt to Bill and Heather Lindsay, Bob, Terry, Andy Palmer and Kim Nickerson. Sharing their loss are relatives in Canada and the UK, as well as a large circle of cherished friends. The family acknowledge with gratitude the gentle care given to Jean by the staff of Glenbrook Lodge. Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving visitors at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 13, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14. A service of thanksgiving will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in Corner Brook at a later date. ALEXANDER, John Reader - Passed peacefully away at Golden Heights Manor on April 28, 2009, John Reader Alexander age 87 years. Predeceased by parents, Julia and John Alexander, wife Joyce, sisters Grace (Moores), Christina May, Edith (Fowler), and Clarice (Tedesco); and brothers Douglas (Ena), and Albert (Joan). Leaving to mourn sister Margaret (Warren); brothers: Kenneth (Margaret) and Lloyd (Bessie), sons: Charles (Matilda), Paul (Karen), and Gordon (Shirley); six grandchildren: Alison and Lynn, Stefan and Meghan, Michelle and Susan; six great-grandchildren: Danette and Shawna, Zachary and Isaac, and Jaxon and Jayden and a large circle of relatives and friends. ANSTEY, Charles Wesley - Passed peacefully away at the L.A. Miller Centre on Monday, April 27, 2009, Charles Anstey, aged 83 years. Predeceased by parents Charles and Jemima; sister Lillian; brothers: Ralph, Bromwell and Winston; great-grandsons: Darryl and Michael James. ANTHONY, Gordon Maxwell - Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Complex on Tuesday, April 28th, 2009, in the presence of his loving spouse, Ruby, Gordon Maxwell Anthony of Blaketown in his 73rd year. Predeceased by his parents; George and Frances Anthony, son Greg Anthony, brother, George and sisters Elizabeth, Bertha and Sheila. He leaves to mourn, with precious memories, his loving spouse of 31 years, Ruby and his three sons: Paul (Caroline) Anthony, Gordie (Tina) Anthony, Dean (Elaine) Anthony, as well as six grandchildren; Jennifer, Melissa, Lindsay, Lorelle, Lauren and Joshua; two great grandchildren; Nathan and Emma; six stepchildren; Denise (Kurt) Pike, Karen (Ward) George, Larry (Krista) Philpott, Nancy Reid, Todd (Dana) Philpott, Michael (Missoon) Philpott; 13 grandchildren; Mark, Melissa, Sarah, Julieanne, Liam, Ryan, Eric, Chelsea, William, Emily, Benjamin, Mirandah and Anna. ANTLE, Nina Elizabeth, Carbonear Born in 06/03/1930 Passed away suddenly at the Carbonear General Hospital on Thursday, April 9, 2009, Nina Elizabeth Antle of Hopeall, aged 79 years. Predeceased by loving husband, Ivor (2002), parents; Mariah and George Mayne and sister, Sarah Jane March. She leaves to mourn with treasured memories, her son, David (Carrie) and daughters, Valera (Wade), Holly and Jocelyn (Keith); five cherished grandchildren: Brian (Jennifer), Robert (Natasha), Jennifer (Jamie), Matthew and Adam; and a precious great grand-daughter, Sierra. She will be lovingly remembered by her sisters: Elsie Fost and Elma (Charles) Reid; brother, Elwood Mayne (Jean); sisters-in-law: Doris Griffin, Julie Vokey, Valera Heath and Evelyn Bastow. RNA at Sick Kids Hospital for 17 years and at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, ON for 9 years before her retirement to Newfoundland. Predeceased by husband: Daniel. BENNETT, Brian Francis - Passed away peacefully on April 2nd, 2009 at the Health Sciences Centre with his loving family by his side, Brian Bennett, age 61 years. Predeceased by his father and mother, Charles and Jessie Bennett, brother Bernie. BOLAND, John - Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre after a courageous battle with cancer on April 21, 2009, John Boland, age 61 years of Cape Broyle. Predeceased by his loving wife Nora (2006), parents Michael (1994) and Marie (1977), brother Pete Boland (2008). Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his children: Clayton (Lisa), Tammy (Erwin) O'Brien, Billy (Gail), and Clyde (Amanda); grandchildren: Melanie and James O'Brien, Joey, Michael and Noah Boland. HARRIS, Leslie - Passed away suddenly on April 14th, 2009, Leslie Harris, age 95. Leaving to mourn Millicent, his wife of 64 years; daughters: Elayne, Sandra (Colin), Eleanor (Bob); grandchildren: Nola (Brian), Tisha, Nicholas and Josh. Also remembered by his sister-in-law Marie Harris, his nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. He was born at Ragged Head, grew up and was educated in Glovertown. He attended Memorial University College, then taught in many Newfoundland outport schools. He was the first principal of the new Integrated High School in Glovertown, and was pleased to welcome students of all faiths. He particularly enjoyed his time teaching at Buchans High School. After retiring, he was active in the Retired Teachers Association and was instrumental in establishing the central division. He was proud of his role in founding the Children's Charities Project. He was also active in the community, and was the first Town Clerk of Glovetown and later involved with the planning of the first library and the medical clinic. He enjoyed traveling and visiting the nooks and crannies of Newfoundland, as well as visiting his daughters across Canada. He was an avid reader, but also spent many pleasurable hours doing crossword puzzles, trouting, berry picking and setting rabbit slips. Visitation with the family will be at Oram's Funeral Home, Glovertown on Saturday, April 18th from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Faith United Church, Glovertown on Sunday, April 19th at 2 p.m. Interment of his ashes will follow immediately after the service. LEACH, Fr. George P., S.J. - Suddenly on Easter morning April 12, 2009, at the age of 71, Fr. George Leach died at home in the Regis College Jesuit Community house on Huron Street in Toronto. He was in his 51st year as a Jesuit and 40th year as a priest. Since January 1, 2009 he was the newly appointed Rector and Superior of the Jesuits at Regis College. Prior to this he was the Superior of the Jesuit Community in Halifax and Director of the Halifax Jesuit Centre of Spirituality. In his ministry as a Jesuit priest, he also served the Church as Director of the Lay Formation Program in the Archdiocese of Halifax, as Director of the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre in Espanola, Ont., as the Director of the Northern Ontario Jesuit Missions, as the Pastor of St. Andrew's Parish in Thunder Bay and as Director of the Canadian Jesuit Mission Office, now known as Canadian Jesuits International. On two separate occasions he served in the formation of young Jesuits as Master of Novices in Guelph, Ontario.
Having been raised and educated in the Halifax area George was well known throughout the Maritimes for his pastoral ministry, for preaching parish missions, for spiritual direction, and for directing and promoting the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. He earned a Doctorate in Ministry from Regis College in Toronto for his work on the Spiritual Exercises and Native Spirituality. In 2006 he was inducted into the St. Mary's University Athletic Hall of Fame for his athletic prowess during his student days. He was deeply committed to Jesuit Community Life and to the vision and mission of the Society of Jesus. LUNDRIGAN, Walter John - Wally has shipped out. After ten years ashore he got the call on Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 while in the Palliative Care Unit at the Leonard A. Miller Centre. Wally was 65 years old but it was the mileage and not the years that got him in the end. He was met onboard by his parents Woodley and Bride and his siblings Joe, Vince, James, Paddy and Kathleen. He leaves on land his wife Anita (Druken) of 40 years, his sons Rodney and Wayne and their wives Nora (Daly) and Sherri (Driscoll), his daughter Sharon and her husband Dennis (Benson), and his two cherished deckhands, granddaughters Abby and Becky. Also left ashore are his brothers: Morgan (Jeanette), Larry (Janet), Michael, and sisters: Margie (Alec), Annie (Michael) and Beatrice (Bob), as well as a flotilla of nieces and nephews. He will also be sorely missed by his favorite sisters-in-law: Regina, AnneMarie, Margie and Alice, as well as his best mate Paddy and his feline friends Cozy and Phanty. There will be a gathering at Caul's Funeral Home on Sunday, April 26th from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Caul's Chapel on Monday, April 27th at a time to be announced. PROUDFOOT, Kenneth George - Passed away after a short battle with cancer at the Health Sciences Centre on April 3, 2009 at the age of 78, predeceased by his wife Helene in May 2008. Kenneth was an internationally recognized research scientist, a potato breeder and was a member and provided leadership on many provincial, national and international committees. His devotion to and enthusiasm for his work has earned him the respect of friends and colleagues the world over. RALPH, Judith O'Shields - Died April 29, 2009 in Union, SC. Mrs. Ralph was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. She taught high school biology in Rossville, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. She taught at Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School in St. John's for 29 years. She retired from Holy Heart in 1998 and moved back to her hometown of Union in the year 2000. She had many friends and former students in Newfoundland and they held a special place in her heart. Mrs. Ralph was the wife of Dr. Earle K. Ralph for 48 years. Survivors also include a son, Dr. Scott K. Ralph and wife Valerie in Oakville, Ontario, Canada; one precious granddaughter Victoria Alexandra, whom she loved dearly; one sister Doris Hodge and husband Charles; one brother Buck O'Shields and wife Doris. RICH, Len - 1938-2009. We regret to announce the death of Leonard Frank (Len) Rich on April 13, 2009, in North Bay, Ontario following a brief courageous battle with cancer. He was 71. Len was born and raised in the small Upstate New York town of Whitehall. After eight years of US military service he settled in Newfoundland in 1966. His careers spanned more than four decades, from sales rep and sales manager to automotive dealer and entrepreneur in the field of tourism. His greatest passions were fly fishing and writing and as a columnist, author and advocate for responsible stewardship he left a profound legacy, touching the lives of many throughout the writing and fly fishing worlds.
Len discovered and later developed a fly-in sportfishing lodge in Labrador he named Awesome Lake Lodge. He operated that business for 10 years before semi-retirement. He authored several books, including Newfoundland Salmon Flies and how to tie them, Best of In The Woods, Fly Fishing Tips and Tactics, Rivers and Woods, So you want to be an outfitter, Memoirs of a fly fisher, Tales of Christmas (Editor), and his latest Bill Bennett: Pioneer Bush Pilot and Outfitter. He also wrote hundreds of magazine articles for various National and International publications.
During his careers he was employed by the Newfoundland Government as Hunting & Fishing Development Officer and by the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) as Manager of Special Events. Len was also employed by Corona College in Grand Falls-Windsor as Director of Communications and Tourism Training. He and his late wife Ruby developed and operated businesses in Clarenville, NL, known as Whitehall Country Inn and The Grapevine. He was predeceased by Ruby in 2004. He served three terms as President of the Labrador Outfitters Association and three terms as Eastern Director of the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC). An award winning writer, he was recognized by the New England Outdoor Writers Association and the Outdoor Writers of Canada for his books and articles and in 1991 received the coveted Canada Recreational Fisheries Award for writing that influenced a generation of recreational fishers. In 2007 he was selected to receive the OWC's Jack Davis Mentorship Award for his work with up and coming writers. He led the OWC Mentorship Program and for a decade he hosted the Creative Writing forum on the Sympatico Internet site.
Throughout his adult life he made Newfoundland his home, but recently lived in Orangeville and North Bay, ON sharing his life and love with his partner Susan Buckle. He is survived by brothers Wayne, Shrewsbury, Vermont; Keith, Hoosick, NY; sister Dawn in Massachusetts; Susan and her children Cameron and Lianne Honeyborne; sons Len Jr. (Chantal) of Lewisporte, NL and Ken of Summerside, NL; daughters Lori (Tony) of Fort Nelson, BC, and Tammy of Summerside, NL; stepson Tony Blackmore and stepdaughter Roxane Bailey (Chris) of St. John's, NL; and grandchildren Cassidy, Alicia, Evan, Tyson, Tyler, Mallory, Morgan, Rebecca, Daniel, Kennedy, and Andrew. WATTS, Francis (Frank) Walter - Walter Watts passed away peacefully on April 23rd, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose, Alberta. Frank was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on March 29, 1938 to Francis and Edna (Burton) Watts. Frank married the love of his life, Elaine Percy on April 6, 1963. Together they raised one son, Rodney (Brenda) and four daughters, Wanda, Della (Kirby), Rosalin (Dwayne) and Amy (Rob). Frank is predeceased by his mother Edna, father Francis, sister Nina, and grand-daughter Patricia. He leaves his memory to be cherished by his wife, five children, eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren plus two upcoming, his sister Linda, and brother Robert. Frank worked 34 years for numerous cab companies in Newfoundland. He was locally known as Sammy Davis Jr. by his Fares. He was a kind and understanding man and touched everyone who encountered him. Frank lived in Newfoundland for 66 years before spending the remaining of his days here in Camrose. Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from First Baptist Church in Camrose, Alberta with Pastor Bob Burke officiating. Cremation followed. WILSON, Douglas Patrick (Rick) - December 17, 1949 - April 21, 2009. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rick Wilson, surrounded peacefully by his family on Tuesday April 21, 2009 after a hard fought battle with a rare blood disorder.
