Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on April 23, 2004, Spank Armstrong, aged 73 years. Predeceased by his sister Mary Darcy. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Shirley (nee Thomson); son Tom (Paula), St. John's; daughters: Heather Elliott (David), St. John's and Kathy Armstrong, Vancouver, BC; beloved grandchildren: Ryan, Alyssa, Beth, Laura, Kimberley and Kyle. Also lovingly remembered by sisters: Margaret Kearney, Betty Dunphy (Joe), Barbara Crosbie (Roger); brother Tom Armstrong (Marie); sisters-in-law: Bette Summers (Peter) and Jeanne Parsons; brother-in-law Dr. Jim Darcy; nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends, especially life-long friend Tom Doyle. Passed suddenly away on April 30th, 2004, Derek Douglas Barnes, aged 38 years, formerly of Harbour Mill. Went to be with his Lord and Saviour on April 4, 2004, Cyril Claud Burry of Medicine Hat, Alberta, (formerly of St. John's, NL), age 75. Left to cherish his loving memory, his wife Effie (nee Stokes) of 47 years; four sons: David (Kim), Goulds, NL, Gary, Rick (Marnie), Medicine Hat, and Bob (Tina), Kingston, ON. He also leaves four grandchildren: Daniel, Mark, Emily and Samuel; his sister, May Fifield and a wide circle of family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew his gentle spirit. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. John's, NL. Donations to the Alzheimer Society in his name would be greatly appreciated by his family. His kind and gentle spirit continues to live on in our memories.

Predeceased by her husbands Albert Marsh (1980) and Lionel Butt (1993). Leaving to mourn daughter Eileen Martin (Wilfred); son Eric Marsh (Gladys); grandchildren Christina Hynes (Kevin) and Rodney Marsh (Bonnie); great-grandchildren Erica Hynes and Andrew Hynes; a circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Carey, Jessie B. (nee Hart)
The death of Jessie Barbara Carey, of 34 Demonts Avenue, St. Andrews, NB, wife of David Carey, occurred on Sunday, April 25, 2004 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Bonavista, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of Marion (Abbott) Hart of St. John's, NL and the late Herbert Hart. Jessie was a dedicated and proud Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer, beginning her career, in Holyrood, NL., Bay Roberts, NL., Placentia, NL., St. John's, NL., and presently in St. Andrews, NB. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by two daughters, Danielle Carey (Daniel Brown) of Saint John and Lynn Carey-Hartwell (Dean) of Waverley, NS; three brothers, Lloyd Hart of Dartmouth, NS, George Hart of Grand Falls, NL, and Terry Hart of St. John's, NL; one sister, Grace O'Reilly of Gander, NL; two grandchilren Zoe and Finn Hartwell, several cousin, nieces and nephews. By request, there will be no visiting at the Funeral Home. Following cremation a Memorial Service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, St. Andrews, NB, on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at 11 am. CARROLL, Barbara Ann Francis (Squires) -
63, of Duluth, Minnesota, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 27, 2004. Barbara was born September 16, 1940, in St. John's, NL, Canada, the daughter of Richard and Mary Squires. She married William J. Carroll of Cornell, Wisconsin, on December 2, 1961, in St. John's, NL. As a career Navy family, their travels took them to Rhode Island, Virginia, New Jersey, Illinois, Spain, and two assignments in Florida and Iceland. The family moved to Salem, Illinois, in 1986 after military retirement as her husband worked for a contract weather station. Subsequently, her husband was hired by the National Weather Service. They remained in the upper Midwest and lived near Neenah, Wisconsin; International Falls, Minnesota; the Twin Cities; and Duluth, Minnesota, since August 1995. Barbara was a homemaker and a child care provider. She was the night and weekend supervisor of the NATO Base Child Care Center in Keflavik, Iceland, and a teacher at Mary's Little Lambs Day Care Center in Rantoul, Illinois. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Jim and Richie Squires of St. John's. Surviving are her husband, daughters Denise (Chuck) Carroll, granddaughters Morgan, Veronica, and Natalie of Stephens City, VA; Dawn (Price) Stanford, grandchildren Ashlee and Ryan of Lexington, KY; Darlene (Chris) Francis, grandchildren Christina and Conner of Fountain, CO; and sons Duane (Connie) Carroll of Winchester, VA; and Derek (fiance ReiAhna Moss) Carroll of Duluth, MN. One sister Sheila (Doug) Heath of St. John's, NL, and nieces and nephews of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia. She is also survived by many friends and relatives, including especially dear friends Mary and Joe Brito of Rantoul, IL, and Pearl Holcombe of Chesapeake, VA. Visitation 11 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Daugherty Funeral Home, 600 East 2nd Street, Duluth, MN. Funeral service at 12 noon in the funeral home chapel. Father Dale Nall will officiate.

COOMBS, Harold E. -
With deep sadness the family of Harold E. Coombs announce his passing at the D.V.A. Veteran's Pavillion in St. John's on April 22, 2004 at the age of 82 years. Harold served in the Royal Navy during WWII from 1939-45. He was a member of the first town council of Upper Island Cove and a chartered member of the Volunteer Fire Dept. He also held many positions in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22. Harold was preceded by wife Phoebe and infant daughter Mary; parents John and Mary Alice; brothers: Tom, Linus and George; one sister, Madeline Dobbin and son-in-law Lloyd Neil. Leaving to mourn his death with many loving memories are four sons: Evelon, Patrick (Diane), Johnny (Margaret), Paul (Cynthia); three daughters: Brenda (Leo) from Labrador City, Nellie (Harold Mercer), Pamela (Paul Crane); 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Father Aylward to conduct the Funeral Mass at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2004 in Spaniard's Bay, NL. COSTELLO, Benedict -
Passed peacefully away at the Palliative Care Unit of the Leonard A. Miller Centre on April 1, 2004, in the presence of his loving family, Benedict Leslie Costello of Holyrood (formerly of King's Cove, Bonavista Bay), aged 81. Left with loving memories are his beloved wife and best friend Bride (Kieley); his daughters: Geralyn (Mount Pearl), Judy (Toronto); his son James (Jim) and his wife Janet Flynn (St. John's); as well as his treasured grandchildren: Christie and Jeremy Costello, who were the lights of "Poppy's" life. He also leaves his brother, Ignatius (Nish) Costello and his wife Iris (St. John's); and his sister-in-law, Alice Costello (Stephenville); a large circle of devoted nieces and nephews from the Costello and Kieley families as well as numerous long-time friends who completed his "family." Many felt the joy of his loving heart, devoted friendship and tremendous humour. Special thanks for their comfort and care to Laurie Ann O'Brien, Dr. Bill Eaton, Dr. D. McLean and all the nursing, support staffs and volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit as well as the staff of 4 South A at the Health Sciences Centre. Also thanks to Fr. Tony Hageman, Fr. F. The family would like to thank the staff of 2 South - Evergreen House for their love and compassion graciously given to Joan over the years. A private family celebration will be held. 43, Windsor, NS, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, after a valiant battle against cancer. Born and raised in Dunville, Newfoundland, John was the eldest son of Theresa (Hunt), and the late Clement Kelly. John joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 19 and served as a firefighter for 23 years. John was proud of his military career and had attained the rank of Sgt. He was presently serving as the Chief Fire Inspector at 12 Wing Shearwater. Married in 1986 to Cindra, John enjoyed his family life and was extremely proud of his two children, Luca-Jean and Daniel. John will be remembered by his family, friends, and extended military family, for his honesty, devotion, caring personality and most notably his winning smile and spirit. We are all a little richer for having been so fortunate as to know John. John is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Cindy (nee Bellingham), his daughter Luca-Jean and son Daniel; mother, Theresa; sisters: Susan, Thelma, Sandra, Florence; brothers: Wayne and Clem; nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his father, Clement. As he requested, John's body will be cremated and buried in Freshwater, Newfoundland. Margaret was one of nine children born to Stephen and Gertrude March, Green's Harbour, Trinity Bay. She was predeceased by her parents and other family members as follows: husband Alfred, October 13, 1992; son Dennis, age four months, November 1960; sisters, Lillian Wheeler, Mildred Cranford, Elsie Holloway, Jane Cooper, brothers, Harold and Kenneth. She is survived by sisters Muriel Reid (Dildo) and Audrey Holloway (Port Blandford). On May 16, 1940 Margaret married Alfred Rowe of Chance Cove, whose parents she had worked for as a "servant girl." They became the proud parents of 15 children, nine sons and six daughters. Over the years, the family expanded to include six sons-in-law and eight daughters-in-law, 34 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. WATTS, Beatrice Tabea (Ford) -
Passed peacefully away at her home in Northwest River, Labrador on Monday, April 26, 2004 at the age of 72. Born in Nain, Labrador on April 1, 1932 she was the daughter of the late Julius (Joe) and Rosina (Pamak) Ford of Black Island, Labrador. Throughout her life, Beatrice received recognition and awards for her dedication as Educator, Advocate and Volunteer. She was on many Boards and Committees locally, provincially and nationally working on women's issues, preserving Labrador heritage and promoting human rights in general. Beatrice was a passionate force with regards to the Labrador Inuit, their culture and language. Beatrice will most be remembered for her roles as sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt and as friend and mentor to so many. Her kind, giving spirit will be missed. Beatrice is survived by husband: Ronald and children: Gwendolyn (Kay), Dartmouth, N.S., Keith (Sandra), Northwest River, Jill (Ninian), Miramichi, N.B., Thomas, Goose Bay, Ian (Renee), Goose Bay; grandchildren: Amy, Rebecca, Kate, Rachel, Alex, Liam Cameron and Liam Ronald; sisters: Sophie, Christine, Dora, Judy and Ellen; sister-in-law: Jessie. Predeceased by parents and by brothers: Wilfred, John and Donald. At Beatrice's request, cremation has taken place with ashes laid to rest in Northwest River following a Memorial Service on Thursday, April 29, 2004.

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Health Sciences Centre, aged 58 years, originally from O'Regan's, Codroy Valley, NL. Predeceased by his father William. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 34 years and best friend Marilyn (nee Fagan); his daughter: Heidi (John Wade), Lloydminster, Alberta; his son: Wayne, Halifax, NS; his mother: Rita Penney (Lion's Manor, Placentia); his brother: Brian (Pearl), St. Anthony; his sister: Madonna (John Collins), Placentia; his sister-in-law: Gerry Ryan (John), St. John's and other family and friends. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Tuesday from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Funeral Mass on Thursday, April 8, 2004, at 9:30 a.m. from Mary Queen of Peace Church. Passed peacefully away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, April 4, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Eric W. Williams, age 72 years. Well-known farmer of the Goulds. Predeceased by parents: Ernest and Rita, daughter: Scharmaine, brothers: Harry and Warrick; sisters-in-law: Mary and Rose. Leaving to mourn loving wife of 45 years, Madonna (nee Oliver); two sons Warrick and Christopher (Dwana); two daughters: Audrey O'Brien (Jimmy) and Lisa Jane Woodfine (Tony), Smithers BC. Five grandchildren: Michael and Erica O'Brien, Mackenzie and Emily Woodfine, Sherri-Lynn Bussey; two brothers: Owen Williams (Becky), S.C. and Hector Williams (Elaine); three sisters: Audrey Williams, Lorna Auld, S.C. and Clarice Williams; five sisters-in-law: Bernadine, Maureen, Genevieve, Pauline and Georgina; also a large number of other relatives and friends, especially his friend Weldon. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m.- 12 noon Wednesday. Funeral service on Wednesday April 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. from St. Paul's Anglican Church, Goulds. Interment to follow in Presentation Cemetery, Goulds. Passed away suddenly at his residence on Sunday, April 18, 2004. Edward T. Yetman of Shea Heights, aged 65 years. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Blanche Yetman; sister Nell and brother Joe. Leaving to mourn his partner, Margie; one daughter Connie (Randy); one granddaughter Becky (Hubert); poppy's little great-grandson Joshua; two brothers: Andrew (Mary) and Harry (Mary); four sisters: Mary, Shirl (Fred) Tulk, Bernice (Jack) Brown, Joan (Bill) Clarke; one sister-in-law, Joan Kerwin; a large number of nieces and nephews; his friends of Golden Vista Manor; special friends John and Bill Westcott; also many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Special thank you to Msgr. Doody, Father Brown and Dr. Boodansingh. Funeral Mass on Tuesday, April 27th, 2004 at 4 p.m. from St. John Bosco Church. Interment to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Edward T. Yetman Memorial Fund, CIBC Bank, Hamlyn Road Branch.
