Passed peacefully away on Saturday, April 29th, 2000 at
her residence. Aged 90 years. Predeceased by her husband Andrew. Leaving
to mourn, several nieces and nephews as well as several friends. Cremation
has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd,
2000 at 11 am from St. Thomas' Anglican Church. Inurnment to

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on April
19th, 2000, Melvin Lloyd Arnott, aged 80 years. Predeceased by
wife Mildred in 1998, son-in-law Ken Abbott in 1994. Leaving to mourn
with fond and loving memories, son Ed (Judy) and daughter Lois Abbott;
grandchildren; Sarah, Kristen, Katie, Justin Arnott; brother Ray, Alberta;
sisters; Joyce Schriock, Saskatchewan, Muriel Becker (Woodrow), Alberta,
Lois Tarbet (Jim), British Columbia, Vera Wright, California; and a large
circle of other relatives and friends, especially his friends at Bishop

Barnes, Frances Julia
Passed peacefully away April 15th, 2000 at
the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center, Grand Falls-Windsor. She
was 83 years of age. Predeceased by parents; sister Rose; granddaughter
Sandra; foster parents Samuel and Roseanna Hender. Left to mourn are husband
Malcolm, Grand Falls-Windsor; son Howard, friend Liz, also of Grand Falls-Windsor;
daughters; Peggy (husband Charles Ward), Labrador City, Beverley (husband
John Hodder), Clarenville; and daughter-in-law Clara, Grand Falls-Windsor.
Also leaving to mourn sisters; Sarah Saunders and Grace Langdon; and brother
Maxwell Granter; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a large
circle of other relatives and friends. Pastor Gerald Lush conducted Funeral
Services at the Chapel of Central Funeral Home, Grand Falls-Windsor

Beekmann, Rosemary (nee Fry)
65, of 10 Great Bay Drive, died Wednesday, April 5th,
2000 at
Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Born March 4, 1934, in St.
John's,
Newfoundland, she was the daughter of Charles and Blanche (Moss) Fry.
She attended schools in St. John's. She was employed at Portsmouth
High School in the cafeteria for many years. She was a member of the
Greenland Community Congregational Church in Greenland where she enjoyed
many of the women's activities. She was the wife of Henry Beekmann
for 47 years. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son,
Michael H. Beekmann of Newmarket; two daughters; Valerie A. Hertzog
of McGuire AFB, N.J., and Joanne L. Brackett of Greenland; seven grandchildren;
Amanda Beekmann, Vanessa Rose Hertzog, Courtney Hertzog, John Brackett,
Samuel Brackett, Emily Brackett and Daniel Brackett; two brothers;
Maxwell Fry and William Fry, both of Newfoundland; two sisters; Pearl
Martin and Olive Smith, both of Newfoundland; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Amelia Rose Brackett and three
brothers; James, Fry, Charles Fry and Harvey Fry.

his passing, following a courageous battle with cancer, at the Health

at the age of 57 years. Richard Patrick Burke, retired from St. John's
City council in December 1999, following 29 years of service. Richard

Jim left work on disability in 1993 and was eligible to retire after
thirty years as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Memorial
University, where he touched the lives of and was well liked and respected
by numerous young people as they prepared to start their careers in the
world of computer science. Jim was, at different periods of his life,
an active member of the Lions Clubs of Mount Pearl, Pouch Cove (thanks
to Clayton and Evelyn King for helping made us welcome, when we lived
in Pouch Cove), and Conception Bay South. He was also a member of several
professional opportunity organizations, including DPMA and DECUS, and
was always ready and anxious to join in and take the lead whenever the

Hall, Thomas
(65 Years). Passed peacefully away on April 6th, 2000,
at the Placentia Health Center, in the presence of his loving family
and friends after a long courageous battle with lung disease, Mr.
Thomas D. Hall, formerly of North River, Conception Bay. Tom
leaves behind his devoted wife Leona "old woman" (nee
Collins); his daughter Jeannette and husband Rob; his son Earle and wife
Stephanie and Bear; as well as two wonderful grandchildren; Bradley and
Charles Edward. Tom also leaves behind three brothers; Mike, John and
Ned; as well as five sisters; Bridget (Bas), Mae, Marguerite, Anne and
Patsy; as well as a number of nieces and nephews who are too numerous
to mention, but they were all dearly loved by Tom. Tom will always be
remembered for his kind gestures and love for his family. Known as a
hard working man who spoke little, his motto was "actions speak
louder than words".
On behalf of Tom, the family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Keegan
and the dedicated staff of the Placentia Health Center who accompanied
him through his battle with such professionalism, compassion and understanding.
Tom is resting at Maher's Funeral Home in Placentia and the Funeral
will take place on Monday, April 10st, 2000 at the Sacred
Heart Parish in Placentia. Tom's final resting place will be the Father Dermot
McGettigan Memorial Cemetery in South East, next to his old buddy Peter.

Hiscock, Vernon Wycliffe
Vernon Hiscock, formerly of Sherwood Drive, Wolfville, passed
peacefully away at the Wolfville Nursing Home on April 21, 2000,
after a lengthy illness. Born at Grand Falls, Newfoundland on July 29th,
1922, her was the eldest son of the late Heber and Beatrice (Knight)
Hiscock. Vernon was a dedicated educator and began his teaching career
in 1940 with the Salvation Army Academic College. Later, after teaching
in a number of Newfoundland communities, he received a Bachelor of Arts
from Acadia University in 1947. He went back to the classroom to teach
again and in 1956, after 2 years of study, earned the first Masters
of Science Degree (in Chemistry) from Memorial University, St. John's,
Newfoundland. Subsequently, her was offered a fellowship to the Imperial
College in London, England to pursue a PhD. But returned home to teach
instead, at his beloved Grand Falls Academy, where he taught Chemistry
and French. He became supervising principal in 1961, a position her
held until 1970. In 1970 he joined the faculty of Acadia University
in the School of Education where he taught for 19 years, retiring in
1989. One of Vernon's greatest passions was music and he was
an accomplished trumpet player, choral director, and pianist. He played
in a number of Salvation Army Bands in Newfoundland and was the Bandmaster
of "B" Company Royal Newfoundland Regiment Garrison
Band for many years, a band of which her was very proud. Later he played
with the Acadian University Symphonette and Medieval Ensemble. His
talent as a choir director was used directing many Grand Falls Academy
Choirs, Salvation Army Songsters, Riverdale Chorale, and the Memorial
United Church Choir. For a number of years he was a member of the St.
Andrew's United Church choir in Wolfville. As well as having
a great appreciation for music, he was an avid gardener, a very talented
photographer and painter, donating some of his works to charity auctions.
He served his communities as the Chairman of the Central Newfoundland
Hospital Board for many years, Vice President of the Newfoundland Teachers' Association,
and as an elder of St. Andrews United Church. Most importantly, Vernon
was a devoted husband, caring father and grandfather, and a fun-loving,
faithful friend who will be sadly missed, he will be lovingly remembered
by his daughters; Lynne (Leo Sears). Lower Sackville, Carol (Brad White),
Wolfville, Jill (Joe Crawford), Wolfville, son Franklyn (Fredi), Halifax;
sisters; Jean Robbins, Florida, Joy Walsh, St. John's, Anne (Fred)

Lilley, Iris E.
Age 85, passed away April 14, 2000, at Huntington Memorial
Hospital, She was born November 29th, 1914 in St. John's,
Newfoundland. Her parents Walter and Priscilla Lilley and her brother,
Harry Lilley preceded her in death. She grew up in Inglewood, California
and moved in 1951 to her home of 49 years in Pasadena. Prior to her membership
in the Washington Square Neighborhood Association, she assisted in
the research and organization of the adjacent Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood
Association's first historical book. She will be remembered with
love by her many friends and neighbours whose lives she touched so
deeply. A Memorial Service was held in Pasadena, California on April
20th, 2000.

Sturge, Rev. Edwin Clifton
Passed away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, after a short illness,
Rev. Edwin Clifton Sturge, in his 81st year,
son of the late John and Amy Sturge of Glovertown. Leaving to mourn with
cherished memories, his loving wife of over 50 years, Marie ( Pike);
daughters Carolyn and Catheryn Nelson (Norman); and granddaughters Jessica
and Cara Nelson; several cousins and a large circle of friends. Clifton
served as a minister of the United Church of Canada for over 50 years.
He graduated from Memorial College, Dalhousie University and Pine Hill
Divinity College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He served in several charges
in Newfoundland including Buchans, Gander, Botwood, St. James and Wesley
in St. John's;
also in the Annapolis Valley and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since retiring
in 1985, he also served as interim minister at St. Andrew's Church
in Saint John, New Brunswick and Northlea United Church in Laval, Quebec.
He was past president of the Newfoundland Conference and served on various
committees in the Presbytery, Conference and General Council throughout
the years. He will be greatly missed by his many friends all across Canada.

Tobin, Captain Michael A.
90, of 80 Archibald Avenue, North Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away at
6:14 am on Saturday morning, April 1st, 2000 at
the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Born in
Dunville, Newfoundland on October 26, 1909, Captain Tobin was the eldest
of ten children. He was the son of the late John Tobin and Julia (nee
Glynn) Tobin. He was predeceased by his first wife Kathleen (Grant),
his brother John (Jack) and his sisters Theresa (Reddigan), Carmel
(O'Reilly),
Mary (Mealey) and Louise (Kaufman). He is survived by his wife Nora
(nee Ryan); three sons; Michael (Elaine), Terry and David (North Sydney);
two brothers; James (Dunville, Newfoundland) and Anthony (Hamilton,
Ontario); and two sisters; Rita Rosskoph (Florida) and Maude Masurack
(California). Captain Tobin was a Master Mariner and had a distinguished
career of over 50 years at sea. He first went to sea aboard a Norwegian
whaler in 1927 under Captain Borgen. He then served aboard the
Argyle, the Clyde and the Home (of the Reid Newfoundland
Company) from 1928 to 1934. He sailed aboard the Glencoe from
1934 to 1940, earning his First Mate's ticket in 1939. As a Member
of the Merchant Marine, he served in perilous conditions throughout
the entire duration of the Second World War. He sailed on the Burgeo from
1940 to 1955, initially as First Mate under Captain Gullage from 1940
to 1946 and then as Master from 1946 to 1955. Captain Tobin brought
the William Carson, the first
car ferry, to the Gulf and sailed her from 1955 to 1966. He then served
as Captain of the Leif Eriksson from 1966 to 1968 and finally as Master
of the Ambrose Shea from 1968 to 1974. He remained active after his
retirement in 1975. He served as a navigator on the St. Lawrence River,
piloting ships to Montreal. He sailed for six decades without an accident,
including four decades as Master. In recognition of his distinguished
marine career, her received an honorary diploma from the Canadian Coast
Guard College in 1983. Captain Tobin's career was profiled in
Harry Bruce's Lifeline (1977) and in Rannie Gillis "This
is Not the Mainland" (1999). His life story was also the
subject of a feature article in the recent issue of "Cape
Breton's
Magazine". In his retirement, Captain Tobin took up gardening
with a passion and played golf until the age of 85. He was also an
avid walker and reader. He had a lifelong interest in the history,
language and culture of Newfoundland and this was reflected in the
composition of his library. Known for his kindly demeanor and gentle
smile, her will be sorely missed, fondly remembered and eternally loved
