Of Carbonear, Nfld.. Passed away peacefully at the Carbonear General Hospital, Carbonear, on April 10th, 2000. Mrs. Abbott was 70 years old. She leaves to mourn her loving husband Michael and family; daughter Linda (Roy Drover), Marystown, Nfld.; sons; Keith (Cecilia) Abbott, Carbonear, Nfld., Wade (Elsie) Abbott, Carbonear, Nfld.; Steve (Linda) Abbott, Clarke's Beach, Nfld.; grandchildren; Keith, Kerri, Stephanie, Michael and Mark Abbott, Adam, Heather and Rebecca Drover; sister; Emily (Jack) Squires, St. Phillip's, Nfld.; a large circle of relatives and friends. Predeceased by parents Albert and Florence Squires. Visitation hours at Slade's Funeral Home, Carbonear, Nfld are from 10 am - 12 noon, 2-5 pm and 7-9:30 pm., daily. The Funeral Mass is being held 10:30 am, April 12th, 2000 from St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Carbonear, followed by the interment at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Carbonear. Alexander, Ralph Joseph
Passed away at this home in Manuels on April 28th, 2000, at age 77 years. Leaving to mourn his children Raymond and his wife, Linda Alexander in Manuels; Rita Lanoie and her husband Allen of Cambridge, Ontario, Theresa Hall and her husband James of Guelph, Ontario, Dorothy Alexander from Kingston, Ontario, Albert Alexander of Bonavista Bay, Chris Drake of Alberta and Deion Burke of St. John's; 16 grandchildren; Stephen, Lisa Stephanie, Renee, RJ, Timothy, Lesley, Darrel, Corey, Cherie, Crystal, Amanda, Justin, Travis, Triston, Natasha; great-grandchildren Brittany, Shavon, Alexandra, Hayden, Ciera. Allen, Hazel H.
Passed peacefully away on Saturday, April 29th, 2000 at her residence. Aged 90 years. Predeceased by her husband Andrew. Leaving to mourn, several nieces and nephews as well as several friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2000 at 11 am from St. Thomas' Anglican Church. Inurnment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery on Forest Road. No flowers by request. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Barrett's Funeral Home.

Arnott, Melvin Lloyd
(Retired Federal Firefighter, WW11 Veteran)

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on April 19th, 2000, Melvin Lloyd Arnott, aged 80 years. Predeceased by wife Mildred in 1998, son-in-law Ken Abbott in 1994. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, son Ed (Judy) and daughter Lois Abbott; grandchildren; Sarah, Kristen, Katie, Justin Arnott; brother Ray, Alberta; sisters; Joyce Schriock, Saskatchewan, Muriel Becker (Woodrow), Alberta, Lois Tarbet (Jim), British Columbia, Vera Wright, California; and a large circle of other relatives and friends, especially his friends at Bishop Meadon Manor. Special thanks to the doctors and staff of 5 North B, Health Sciences Centre. At Melvin's request, cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday from 12 noon- 2 pm., with a Memorial Service to follow at 2 pm.. Aylward, Gordon Patrick
Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, on Wednesday, April 5th, 2000, Gordon Patrick Aylward, in his 88th year. Predeceased by brothers Gerard and Fabian and sister, St. Mary Madeline, R.S.M.. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Maude (nee Pike); seven daughters; Pat Kieley, Barbara Aylward and Gwen Maguire, St. John's, Joan Upshall (Willis), Whitbourne, Madelyn Kelly (Bill) and Peg Healey (Steven), Goose Bay, Judy Gorich (John), North Carolina; three sons; Brian (Gail), Gordon (Sonny) Jr., (Joan Marie), Ronald (Dorothy), Marystown; brother Fintan (Ann); sisters; Margaret Aylward and Madeline Cotter; sister-in-law Frances Aylward; 26 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; also a large circle of family and friends and special friend and caregiver, Dalton. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Thursday 7-10 pm and Friday 10 am - 10 pm.. Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 8th , 2000 at 11:30 am from St. Pius X Church. Barnes, Frances Julia
Passed peacefully away April 15th, 2000 at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center, Grand Falls-Windsor. She was 83 years of age. Predeceased by parents; sister Rose; granddaughter Sandra; foster parents Samuel and Roseanna Hender. Left to mourn are husband Malcolm, Grand Falls-Windsor; son Howard, friend Liz, also of Grand Falls-Windsor; daughters; Peggy (husband Charles Ward), Labrador City, Beverley (husband John Hodder), Clarenville; and daughter-in-law Clara, Grand Falls-Windsor. Also leaving to mourn sisters; Sarah Saunders and Grace Langdon; and brother Maxwell Granter; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Pastor Gerald Lush conducted Funeral Services at the Chapel of Central Funeral Home, Grand Falls-Windsor on April 18th, 2000. Funeral arrangements were by Central Funeral Homes. Pallbearers were grandchildren; David Ward, Stephen Barnes, Michael Ward, Andrew Barnes, Jonathan Ward, Matthew Hodder and Timothy Hodder.

Beekmann, Rosemary (nee Fry)
65, of 10 Great Bay Drive, died Wednesday, April 5th, 2000 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Born March 4, 1934, in St. John's, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of Charles and Blanche (Moss) Fry. She attended schools in St. John's. She was employed at Portsmouth High School in the cafeteria for many years. She was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church in Greenland where she enjoyed many of the women's activities. She was the wife of Henry Beekmann for 47 years. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Michael H. Beekmann of Newmarket; two daughters; Valerie A. Hertzog of McGuire AFB, N.J., and Joanne L. Brackett of Greenland; seven grandchildren; Amanda Beekmann, Vanessa Rose Hertzog, Courtney Hertzog, John Brackett, Samuel Brackett, Emily Brackett and Daniel Brackett; two brothers; Maxwell Fry and William Fry, both of Newfoundland; two sisters; Pearl Martin and Olive Smith, both of Newfoundland; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Amelia Rose Brackett and three brothers; James, Fry, Charles Fry and Harvey Fry.

Bennett, Phyllis Marie
Succumbed to her injuries on April 1st, 2000 at the Health Sciences Centre, due to a tragic accident, Phyllis Marie Bennett, aged 60 years. Predeceased by the father of her children, Richard Murphy; brothers; Patrick, Gerald and Thomas Bennett; sister; Margaret Bennett and grandchild; Susan Hannah King. Leaving to mourn with cherished memories, a very special friend; Fred Whitten; daughters; Dena (Jim) Stone, Jeanie (Jamie) Haynes and Sherry-Lyn; sons; Mike (Jackie), Riche (Brenda) and Johnny (Jackie); sister Theresa Maher; brothers; Mike (Betty), Halifax, NS; Johnny (Jean); also leaving to mourn 12 grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. Benson, Catherine Carmel
Passed peacefully away, after a lengthy illness, in the presence of her family, at the Health Sciences Center, on Monday, April 24th, 2000, Catherine Carmel Benson, age 75 years. Predeceased by her husband Samuel and son Samuel Jr.. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving (cherished) memories, daughter Sandra and two sons; Gary (Mary) and Wayne (Vernice); grandchildren; Ian, Gary, Diana and Bruce; brother Cecil (Joan); special nephew Tommy and family; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Center, after a lengthy illness, on Wednesday, April 12th, 2000, Len Bundon in his 47th year. Predeceased by his father Leonard (Len). Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, April 4th, 2000 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in the presence of his family, William Donald Boyd at the age of 80. Burke, Richard Patrick
It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Patrick Burke announce his passing, following a courageous battle with cancer, at the Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, April 27th, 2000, at the age of 57 years. Richard Patrick Burke, retired from St. John's City council in December 1999, following 29 years of service. Richard will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Rosemary (nee Layden); his three children; Richard (Rhonda), John (Lori) and Tammy (Damian). Campbell, J. Gregory
Age 53 years. Passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 8th, 2000, surrounded by his close friends on a ski-dooing expedition. Son of the late James and Marjorie Campbell. Predeceased by his sister Lynn. Passed away in his 54th year at the Leonard A. Miller Centre in St. John's on April 6th, 2000, after a long and courageous battle with the devastation of Type 1 Diabetes, Jim (Ralph James) Dawe. Predeceased by his father, Maxwell Dawe, and baby son, Jason. He will be sadly missed as a gentle, loving and considerate husband, by his wife, Doris Collins-Dawe; as a loving father and grandfather by his daughters, Gillian Dawe and granddaughter Sarah, and Andrea Janes (Chris) and granddaughter Hilary; by Doris' two daughters, Yvette Moore and Wendy Moore, whom he helped raise and treated as his own; by his mother Minnie Dawe (Eddie); his sisters Grace Crosbie (Bill), Linda Murphy (Mike), and Marcella Paynter (John) and their families; by special cousins Lorraine Morgan (Dave), Seal Cove and Mary McKinley (Phil), New Hampshire and their families, by brother-in-law Thomas Collins (Theresa), Placentia; and sister-in-law Mary Walsh (Fred), Torbay, and their families; and by friends and relatives in Canada the U.S.. Special mention to Lorne and Gert King for their continued friendship and support. Jim left work on disability in 1993 and was eligible to retire after thirty years as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Memorial University, where he touched the lives of and was well liked and respected by numerous young people as they prepared to start their careers in the world of computer science. Jim was, at different periods of his life, an active member of the Lions Clubs of Mount Pearl, Pouch Cove (thanks to Clayton and Evelyn King for helping made us welcome, when we lived in Pouch Cove), and Conception Bay South. He was also a member of several professional opportunity organizations, including DPMA and DECUS, and was always ready and anxious to join in and take the lead whenever the opportunity presented itself. Hall, Thomas
(65 Years). Passed peacefully away on April 6th, 2000, at the Placentia Health Center, in the presence of his loving family and friends after a long courageous battle with lung disease, Mr. Thomas D. Hall, formerly of North River, Conception Bay. Tom leaves behind his devoted wife Leona "old woman" (nee Collins); his daughter Jeannette and husband Rob; his son Earle and wife Stephanie and Bear; as well as two wonderful grandchildren; Bradley and Charles Edward. Tom also leaves behind three brothers; Mike, John and Ned; as well as five sisters; Bridget (Bas), Mae, Marguerite, Anne and Patsy; as well as a number of nieces and nephews who are too numerous to mention, but they were all dearly loved by Tom. Tom will always be remembered for his kind gestures and love for his family. Known as a hard working man who spoke little, his motto was "actions speak louder than words". On behalf of Tom, the family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Keegan and the dedicated staff of the Placentia Health Center who accompanied him through his battle with such professionalism, compassion and understanding. Tom is resting at Maher's Funeral Home in Placentia and the Funeral will take place on Monday, April 10st, 2000 at the Sacred Heart Parish in Placentia. Hiscock, Vernon Wycliffe
Vernon Hiscock
, formerly of Sherwood Drive, Wolfville, passed peacefully away at the Wolfville Nursing Home on April 21, 2000, after a lengthy illness. Born at Grand Falls, Newfoundland on July 29th, 1922, her was the eldest son of the late Heber and Beatrice (Knight) Hiscock. Vernon was a dedicated educator and began his teaching career in 1940 with the Salvation Army Academic College. Later, after teaching in a number of Newfoundland communities, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University in 1947. He went back to the classroom to teach again and in 1956, after 2 years of study, earned the first Masters of Science Degree (in Chemistry) from Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland. Subsequently, her was offered a fellowship to the Imperial College in London, England to pursue a PhD. But returned home to teach instead, at his beloved Grand Falls Academy, where he taught Chemistry and French. He became supervising principal in 1961, a position her held until 1970. In 1970 he joined the faculty of Acadia University in the School of Education where he taught for 19 years, retiring in 1989. One of Vernon's greatest passions was music and he was an accomplished trumpet player, choral director, and pianist. He played in a number of Salvation Army Bands in Newfoundland and was the Bandmaster of "B" Company Royal Newfoundland Regiment Garrison Band for many years, a band of which her was very proud. Later he played with the Acadian University Symphonette and Medieval Ensemble. His talent as a choir director was used directing many Grand Falls Academy Choirs, Salvation Army Songsters, Riverdale Chorale, and the Memorial United Church Choir. For a number of years he was a member of the St. Andrew's United Church choir in Wolfville. As well as having a great appreciation for music, he was an avid gardener, a very talented photographer and painter, donating some of his works to charity auctions. He served his communities as the Chairman of the Central Newfoundland Hospital Board for many years, Vice President of the Newfoundland Teachers' Association, and as an elder of St. Andrews United Church. Most importantly, Vernon was a devoted husband, caring father and grandfather, and a fun-loving, faithful friend who will be sadly missed, he will be lovingly remembered by his daughters; Lynne (Leo Sears). Age 85, passed away April 14, 2000, at Huntington Memorial Hospital, She was born November 29th, 1914 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Her parents Walter and Priscilla Lilley and her brother, Harry Lilley preceded her in death. She grew up in Inglewood, California and moved in 1951 to her home of 49 years in Pasadena. Prior to her membership in the Washington Square Neighborhood Association, she assisted in the research and organization of the adjacent Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association's first historical book. She will be remembered with love by her many friends and neighbours whose lives she touched so deeply. A Memorial Service was held in Pasadena, California on April 20th, 2000.

Sturge, Rev. Edwin Clifton
Passed away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, after a short illness, Rev. Edwin Clifton Sturge, in his 81st year, son of the late John and Amy Sturge of Glovertown. Leaving to mourn with cherished memories, his loving wife of over 50 years, Marie ( Pike); daughters Carolyn and Catheryn Nelson (Norman); and granddaughters Jessica and Cara Nelson; several cousins and a large circle of friends. Clifton served as a minister of the United Church of Canada for over 50 years. He graduated from Memorial College, Dalhousie University and Pine Hill Divinity College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He served in several charges in Newfoundland including Buchans, Gander, Botwood, St. James and Wesley in St. John's; also in the Annapolis Valley and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since retiring in 1985, he also served as interim minister at St. Andrew's Church in Saint John, New Brunswick and Northlea United Church in Laval, Quebec. He was past president of the Newfoundland Conference and served on various committees in the Presbytery, Conference and General Council throughout the years. Tobin, Captain Michael A.
90, of 80 Archibald Avenue, North Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away at 6:14 am on Saturday morning, April 1st, 2000 at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Born in Dunville, Newfoundland on October 26, 1909, Captain Tobin was the eldest of ten children. He was the son of the late John Tobin and Julia (nee Glynn) Tobin. He was predeceased by his first wife Kathleen (Grant), his brother John (Jack) and his sisters Theresa (Reddigan), Carmel (O'Reilly), Mary (Mealey) and Louise (Kaufman). He is survived by his wife Nora (nee Ryan); three sons; Michael (Elaine), Terry and David (North Sydney); two brothers; James (Dunville, Newfoundland) and Anthony (Hamilton, Ontario); and two sisters; Rita Rosskoph (Florida) and Maude Masurack (California). Captain Tobin was a Master Mariner and had a distinguished career of over 50 years at sea. He first went to sea aboard a Norwegian whaler in 1927 under Captain Borgen. He then served aboard the Argyle, the Clyde and the Home (of the Reid Newfoundland Company) from 1928 to 1934. He sailed aboard the Glencoe from 1934 to 1940, earning his First Mate's ticket in 1939. As a Member of the Merchant Marine, he served in perilous conditions throughout the entire duration of the Second World War. He sailed on the Burgeo from 1940 to 1955, initially as First Mate under Captain Gullage from 1940 to 1946 and then as Master from 1946 to 1955. Captain Tobin brought the William Carson, the first car ferry, to the Gulf and sailed her from 1955 to 1966. He then served as Captain of the Leif Eriksson from 1966 to 1968 and finally as Master of the Ambrose Shea from 1968 to 1974. He remained active after his retirement in 1975. He served as a navigator on the St. Lawrence River, piloting ships to Montreal. He sailed for six decades without an accident, including four decades as Master. In recognition of his distinguished marine career, her received an honorary diploma from the Canadian Coast Guard College in 1983. Captain Tobin's career was profiled in Harry Bruce's Lifeline (1977) and in Rannie Gillis "This is Not the Mainland" (1999). His life story was also the subject of a feature article in the recent issue of "Cape Breton's Magazine". In his retirement, Captain Tobin took up gardening with a passion and played golf until the age of 85. He was also an avid walker and reader. He had a lifelong interest in the history, language and culture of Newfoundland and this was reflected in the composition of his library. Known for his kindly demeanor and gentle smile, her will be sorely missed, fondly remembered and eternally loved by his family and friends. Resting at W.J. Predeceased by her husband Michael Patrick. Peacefully at Lakeridge Health, Oshawa, on Friday, April 21st. 2000 Alma (Bussey) Warford, in her 77th year. Dear mother of Ina, husband William Norman, Oshawa, Warren Bussey, wife Jackie, Ajax; Herman Bussey, wife June, Ajax and Rex Bussey, wife Madonna, Whitby. Fondly remembered by her step-sons and daughters; Freeman, Leonard, Max, Edwin, Elsie, Beulah and their families. Dear sister of Greta Payne, Edith Mugford (Albert), Clara Snow, Clifton Anthony (Ethel) and George Anthony (Rita), all on Newfoundland. Lovingly remembered by her 11 grandchildren; Corrine, Linda, Wade, Jeff, Lori, Denise, Christopher, Mark, John, Paul and James. Dearest great-grandmother of Hailey, Joshua and Riley. It is with great sadness that the family of Florence Elizabeth (Betty) Warr, announce her sudden passing on April 3rd, 2000, at Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Leaving to mourn husband Bertram; children; Bert Jr. (wife Cindy), Janet, Donna (Mick); seven grandchildren; Kayla, Nicholas, Katherine, Heather, Jillian, Kayla and Brent; two brothers; Jim Janes (Patsey), St. John's, Douglas Janes (Joanne), St. John's; sister Patsey (Dave Pollock), Goose Bay; also a large circle of family and friends. Predeceased by brother Ian (Feb. 1984); mother Pauline (May 1984); father Cecil (June 1987). Main, Dorothy (William) Wade, Scarborough, Ontario, Mercedes (Don) Phelps, Idaho, USA., Patricia (Boyd) Wheeler, St. John's, Joan (William) Murphy, Avondale, Rosemarie and Linda Kennedy, both of Montreal, Quebec and Maureen (Fraser) Hiscock, Gander; her loving grand-niece Phyllis Woodford, Hr. Main and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; her devoted caregivers; Carol, Linda, Beverly, Ollie and Mary; also a circle of other relatives and friends. Passed away on Tuesday, April 4th, 2000 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook, Munroe White, formerly of New Perlican. Age 79 years. He will be sadly missed by his children; Joseph (Barbara), Sharon, Ontario, Dolores Boersma (David), Trenton, Ontario, Joan Banks (William), Val Caron, Ontario, Gerald (Patricia), Pasadena, Randy (Margaret), Corner Brook, Dianne Drover (Wayne), Pasadena; 9 grandchildren; Kim, Greg, Tammy, Jamie, Mark, Christopher, Julianne, Michelle and David; 10 great-grandchildren; Timothy, Adam, Katie, Rachel, Ryan, Alexander, Melissa, Julia, Madison and Alysha; sisters; Lorna Warren, Deer Lake, Mary Ann Penney, Corner Brook; also a large number of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie in 1996; brother Merill in 1963 and his parents, Josiah and Plina. Passed peacefully away on Thursday, April 13th, 2000, Mildred May Willar (nee Noel) at the Carmelite House for Senior Citizens, Grand Falls-Windsor. She was in her 94th year. Mrs. Willar was a member of numerous church and community organizations. Predeceased by husband Max Willar; sisters; Dorothy and Winnifred; and brother Malcolm. Left to mourn son Angus (wife Eileen), Kingston, ON; daughters; Ruth (husband Reginald Elford), Grand Falls-Windsor, NL; Barbara (husband Robert Parsons), Toronto, ON.. Also leaving to mourn sisters; Muriel Smith, St. John's, NL and Mary Hobbs, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL; brother Reginald Noel, Mount Pearl, NL; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Rev. William Rice and Rev. David Russell will conduct Funeral Services at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on Saturday, April 15th, 2000 at 2 pm.. Williams, Elizabeth (Aunt Beth) (nee Hearn)
Passed peacefully away in Goulds on April 10th, 2000 in the presence of her loving family, Beth Williams, in her 94th year. Predeceased by her husband Peter in 1964; her son Gus and grandson Darryl in 1967; and grandson Gus in 1983. Left with precious memories are her three sons; Ambrose (Mary), Andy (Joan) and Aiden (Madeline); six daughters; Winnie (Bill) St. Croix, with whom she resided, Marg (Bob) Godden, Betty (Joe) Frampton, Kathleen (Kay) Williams, all at Goulds, Doris (Bernie)Scannell of Holyrood and Paula (Ed) Kelly of Labrador City. Nanny will be missed by her 40 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren; as well as a special "adopted" daughter Eileen Healey, and a large number of relatives and friends. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Funeral on Thursday at St. Kevin's Church, Goulds, 11 am.. Interment at St. Kevin's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers (because of the Lenten Season), donations may be made in her memory to the St. Kevin's Family Aid Fund.

Passed peacefully away at the Pentecostal Senior Citizen's Home, Clarke's Beach on Friday, April 21st. 2000, Rosalie A. Worthman of Carbonear, age 78 years. Predeceased by sisters; Doris Garland and Evelyn Penney; nephew Albert Garland. Leaving to mourn, sister Dora (Ben) Fost, St. John's; brother-in-law; Hubert Penney, Carbonear; nieces, Joyce (Ken) LeBreton and Dianee (Bill) Boyd, both of St. John's; special niece, Lorna Garland, Carbonear; nephews, Ross (Vera) Penney, Placentia, Calvin (Judy) Penney, Carbonear, David (Janet) Fost, Keswick, ON.; Wayne (Wanda) Fost, St. John's; also a large number of other relatives and friends, including the staff of the Pentecostal Senior Citizen's Home, whom she dearly loved and who treated her with such loving care and respect. Resting at Noel's Funeral Home, Water Street, Carbonear until 12 noon Monday, April 24th, 2000. Funeral to follow at 2 pm from Calvary Pentecostal Church and Cemetery, Carbonear. Passed peacefully away at Dr. Walter Templeman Hospital, Bell Island, on April 8th, 2000. Age 93 years. Leaving to mourn one son Edward and daughter-in-law Louise; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Resting at Pendergast's Funeral Home. Funeral Services on Wednesday, April 12th, 2000 at 2 pm in St. Cyprians Church. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, Bell Island.
