From the land of the fish, the fog and the snow,
Young men left to fight war a long time ago.

"First of July Memorial Day"
To the Men of The 1st Newfoundland Regiment, at the start of the First World
War, 1914-1918, earning the prefix "Royal", The Royal Newfoundland Regiment,
especially "E" Company, may their souls rest in eternal peace!
To the majority of the men of 'The Regiment' returning to fight yet another
battle, this time to find employment, to maintain and start new families, to
get their "blood money", to relive the horrors of that conflict in their minds
time after time after time which must have had a profound effect on them and
their families, to find relief, some relief with the use of alcohol and then
the ultimate insult… losing "The Regiments Day", their "Day", the first of
July Memorial Day to a "fun" day, when that "fun" day easily could have been
planned for the first Monday in August, the federal holiday known as the Civic
Holiday. May their souls rest in eternal peace and if by chance there is still
a member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment still with us, stand tall, if not
in body, if not in mind, then maybe someone will for them!
Let me quote the second and fourth stanzas of a five stanza poem (1922) attributed
to Colin Campbell McKay, 1876 – 1939, a War Veteran, a seafarer, a labour activist,
a poet, a short story writer, a socialist, a political economist, a journalist
and a native of Shelburne, Nova Scotia which reads
Heroes they were short days agone,
Marching through hell in the thundering dawn,
Smashing the power of a haughty foe,
Saving the world for a shilling or so,
In Flanders Mud."
And
"Their country does not need them now,
To the gods of gold there masters bow,
An cynically smile at the tommyrot
They bravely talked when the terror stalked
Thro' Flanders fields…"
