January 7, 2002

PHILPOTT, Frank
Passed away suddenly at his home in Plate Cove West on Tuesday, December 4, 2001, Frank Philpott in his 71st year. Predeceased by his son Frank Jr., three infant sons and his parents Thomas and Ellen. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Rose; daughters Meriam (Paul) and Agnes (Edmund) both of Plate Cove West; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two sisters Josephine (William) of Plate Cove West and Bridget of Duntara; and a large circle of relatives and friends. Rested at St. Patrick's Church, Plate Cove. Funeral service was held Friday, December 7, 2001 from St. Patrick's Church with interment at the Roman Catholic cemetery, Plate Cove East.

PICKERSGILL, JANE, M.D.
Following a brief illness in Johannesburg, South Africa on Dec. 24, 2001. Beloved wife and dear friend of William Baird; proud and loving mother of Tom and Alan Baird; much loved eldest child of Margaret Pickersgill and the late J.W Pickersgill; loving daughter-in-law of Edgar Baird and the late Mary Baird; loving big sister of Peter (Lisa Rae), Alan (Susan Carter) and Ruth (Garth McKane); indulgent aunt of Michael and Madeleine McKane; sister-in-law of Jane Baird Longpre, Jack Baird and Mickey Baird. A service of remembrance took place in Ottawa Jan. 4 and another in Gander Mon., Jan. 7. Jane will be sadly missed by her family, her many friends and colleagues. In lieu of flowers donations to the Arthritis Society, 685 Water Street, St. John's, NF, AlE 1B5 would be appreciated.

SHORT, Frederick
Passed peacefully away at the G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville on January 1, 2002, Frederick Short of Deep Bight, aged 86 years. Predeceased by his sister Myrtle (1996). Left with fond and loving memories his daughters Kate of Deep Bight and Lynette (Jason) Balsom of Deep Bight; sons Louis and Eugene both of Deep Bight; brother Albert (Marguerite) of Deep Bight; sister-in-law Viola of Deep Bight; brother-in-law Frank Adey of Deep Bight; two grandsons Zachary and Noah; and a large number of relatives and friends. Rested at the Trinity United Church in Deep Bight. The funeral was held on Friday, January 2,2002 at the Trinity United Church with interment at the United Church Cemetery, Deep Bight.

EASTMAN, Annie
(Middle Arm)

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Annie Eastman, age 81, announce her passing at the BVPHC, Baie Verte on Friday, December 28, 2001. Predeceased by her husband James, parents Ernest and Sarah Reid, sisters Hazel Reid, Blanche Strowbridge, Syliva Reid, Hazel Reid and brother Harold Reid. Left with fond and loving memories are son Harold (Joyce), New Brunswick; daughter Bertha Mitchell (Raymond), Middle Arm; sisters Ruth Best, Sadie Hollett, Elsie Best, Jean Penney (John), Irene Howell (John), Meta Beazley; and brothers Ernest Reid (Annie) and Gordon Reid (Ethel). Also leaving to mourn six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Pastor Leighton Foster conducted the funeral service at Bayview Pentecostal Church and Cemetery, Middle Arm on Monday, December 31, 2001. Pallbearers were Jimmy Eastman, John Rideout, Arthur Mitchell, Bond Mitchell, Herbert Janes, Raymond Noseworthy and honorary pallbearer was Adam Rideout. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Eddie Wimbleton and Roy Wimbleton, Baie Verte Peninsula Funeral Home.

WHALEN, Harold T.
Gently eased from this life, surrounded by his loving family whom he dearly loved, Harold Thomas Whalen, aged 71. Leaving with a lifetime of cherished, wonderful memories are his wife of 48 years Rosetta (May), sons Harold Jr. (Gertie), Tom (Cathy) and Dennis (Laura); daughter Daphne (Greg Blake); and grandchildren, who gave him such joy, Debbie, Deana, Daniel, Cody, Cassidy, Spencer, Casey, Lenore and Emma Rae. Also leaving to mourn brothers Albert (Kathleen) and Fred (Alma); sisters Alice Wade, Beatrice (Otto King) and Gertie (Edgar Smith); brothers-in-law John May (Sylvia) and Philip May (Maxine); sisters-in-law Ellen Snook (Leonard), Lillian Snook (Randell), Linda Marshall, Sophia Spurrell (Lloyd) and Marie Snook (Basil). He will also he missed by many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and camping buddies. Rested at Wesley United Church, Caplin Cove. Funeral held Thursday, January 10, 2002. Donations in his memory may be made to the Wesley United Church Memorial Fund, c/o Box 13 Site 4 RRI, Caplin Cove, Trinity Bay, NF, AOE 2A0. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Fewer's Funeral Home, Clarenville.

COOPER, Ella
Passed peacefully away at her residence in Gander on January 5, 2002, Mrs. Ella Cooper in her 85th year. Mrs. Cooper is predeceased by her parents, two brothers and four sisters. Left with fond and loving memories is husband Royal in Gander sons Glen and wife Sadie of St. John's; brother Boyd Adams and wife Nelda of Milton; sister Evelyn and husband Lewis Pelley of Milton; grandchildren Jodi of Gander; Michelle of Ottawa; as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. Rested at Stacey's Funeral Home in Gander. Funeral service took place from Fraser Road United Church in Gander on Wednesday, January 9, 2002. Cremation to follow and interment at All Saints United Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation

HISCOCK, Mary Elizabeth
Passed away on New Year's Eve 2001, Mary Elizabeth Hiscock (nee Day) of Lady Cove, Random Island, aged 99 years and 8 months. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Maud Reid (Ernest), Laura Rideout, both of Lady Cove and son Raymond (Jackie) of Clarenville. Also left with fond memories are 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, seven nieces and four nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held on Friday, January 4, 2002 at Random Island Citadel With interment at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Hickman's Harbour.

EASTON, Lorenzo Job
Passed peacefully away, Jan. 5, 2002, at Soldier's Memorial Hospital, Orillia, Ont., after suffering a stroke, Job Easton, formerly from Newfoundland, in his 85th year. Job was predeceased by parents, Edward and Rebecca; brother, William; sisters, Annie Lou and Rita; wife, Evelyn (1970) and wife, Sadie (2000). He is survived by son Robert (Naomi), Sexsmith, Alta.; daughters, Rita Stuckless (Rex) of Brazil; Glenda Hunter (Fred), Grand Falls-Windsor, and Ruth McNeilly (Wayne), Brarnpton, Ont.; stepsons, Ford Rowsell (Ann), Orillia, Ont; Lewis Rowsell (Christina), Kincarden, Ont.; Alvin Rowsell (Lenora), Nipigon, Ont., and stepdaughter, Cavell Rowsell of Thailand; brothers, Charles (Alvina), Clarenville, and Edward (Joyce), Nova Scotia; sisters, Martha Baggs (William), Grand Falls-Windsor, and Barbara Rideout (Austin), Conception Bay South. From both families, Job leaves 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A  memorial service will be held in Ontario, Thursday, Jan.10, with interment later in Orillia.

OLDFORD, James Wilbert
Passed suddenly away on Christmas Eve at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, James Wilbert Oldford, age 74. Predeceased by his loving wife Emaline; parents Albert and Carrie Oldford; brother Clyde and sister Mildred. Leaving to mourn two sons Lawrence (Bertha) and Wally (Linda); grandchildren Jamie, Cindy, Nadine, Boyd, Paul and Tracey; great-grandchildren Megan, Patrick, Christopher, Courtney, Morgan, Sarah and Emma; brother Freeman; sister Rose; and a large circle of brothers and sisters-in-law and other relatives and friends. Rested at the Alton United Church, Port Blandford from where the funeral took place on December 26, 2001. Interment followed. at the United Church Cemetery, Port Blandford. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Vardy's Funeral Home, Random Island.

HARTY, Austin
On December 2, 2001, Austin Harty, age 79, passed peacefully away after a lengthy illness at St. Clares Hospital, St. John's. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Susan, four sons, seven daughters, one sister, fifteen grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. Rested at the Duntara Community Hall, Duntara. Funeral service took place at the Roman Catholic Church in King's Cove on December 5, 2001. Interment followed at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in King's Cove. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Vardy's Funeral Home, Random Island.

WOOLRIDGE, Gilbert

In the presence of his loving wife and in his own residence, Gilbert Woolridge passed suddenly away in his 76th year. Leaving with lengthy cherished, wonderful memories are his wife Reubina, sister Bertha, son Keith (Princeline), granddaughter Tanya and a number of relatives and friends. Predeceased by one son Colin. Rested at The Church of the Good Sheppard, Dunfield, Trinity Bay from where tbe funeral took place on Saturday, January 12, 2002. Mr. Woolridge was laid to rest at the Anglican Cemetery in Trinity. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Vardy's Funeral Home, Random Island.

Passed peacefully away at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Monday, January 14, 2002, Frank Best of Arnold's Cove, aged 83 years. Predeceased by three sisters. Left with fond and loving memories his wife Lily of 15 years; stepdaughters Rowena (Roy Wareham), Arnold's Cove, Muriel (Baxter Wareham), Arnold's Cove, Sheila Boutcher (Hiram Boland), Gander and Iris (Jim Stanich), Alberta; sisters Mildred Lockyer, Maud (Gill Rowe), Jessie Humber all of Corner Brook; brother Clev, Corner Brook; six step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and a large number of relatives and friends. Rested at Fewer's Funeral Home, Arnold's Cove. Funeral took place Thursday, January 17, 2002 at the St. Michael's Anglican Church. Interment at the Interfaith Cemetery, Arnold's Cove. In his memory a Memorial Fund to the St. Michael's Anglican Church, Arnold's Cove has been established.

PELLEY, Edith
(February 5, 1903 - January 6, 2002)
formerly of Clarenville, NF.

Passed away peacefully at Grande Prairie, Alberta. Sadly missed by daughter Joan (Horton) Carrick of Rome, N. Y. and son Edwin (Midred) Pelley of Edmonton, Alberta, eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband Norman in 1978. Cremation. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

TOBIN, Brenda
Passed suddenly away at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville on December 2, 2001, Brenda Tobin, 32 years of age, Leaving to mourn husband Wally; daughters Jody and Haley; mother Georgina Howse; brothers Junior and Rodney; grandmother Edna Howse; aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews; and a large number of relatives and friends. Passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 09, 2002 at the BHCC, Ethel Wiseman age 77 years. Left to mourn are her husband, John at Golden Height's Manor, Bonavista; one son, Bennett and wife, Shirley at Grand Bank; two daughters, Bernice and husband, Glen Romaine and Blanche and husband, Hayward Keats, both of Newman's Cove; Gregory (Carrie), Michael (Jackie) at Calgary, Jason (Patrica), St. John's, Steven (Shari), Alison (Paddy) in Ontario, Tina (Brian), and two very special great-grandchildren, Brittany and Brady at Newman's Cove; two brothers, Howard (Mary) Cole at Amherst Cove, Leslie (Rita) Cole at Grand Falls-Wiridsor; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Pearl Ford at Bonavista, Mae (Kris) Hollederson Vancouver, B.C. Also many nieces and nephews, and a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Newman's Cove, January 12. Monetary donations are being made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

B.Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Monday, January 21, 2002, Ralph Balsom of Clarenville, aged 77 years.Predeceased by his sons Gerry and Monty, and sister Florence. Left with fond and loving memories his wife Jean of 57 years; daughter Linda Pelley (Gary), Alberta; son David (Irene), Alberta; sisters Particia Ellis, Bishop's Falls, Carolyn (Lester Petten), St. John's, Doll (Melvin Rideout), Foxtrap and Ann (Clayton Sheppard), Clarenville; brothers Fred (Eva), Grand Falls, Dave (Shirley), Deep Bight and Lin (Elise), British Columbia; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a large circle of relatives and friends. Rested at Fewer's Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral service held on Thursday, January 24, 2002 from Memorial United Church, Clarenville with interment at United Church Cemetery, Clarenville. of Bonavista, NF, passed peacefully away on Saturday, January 19, 2002 at the Health Science Complex, St. John's, NF. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Belle, eight children and their spouses, seventeen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral service from the Salvation Army Citadel, Bonavista, NF, on Wednesday, January 23, 2002. Interment at Salvation Army Cemetery, Bonavista. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sick Children's Fund, Bonavista Lions Club or Salvation Arrny, Bonavista Corps.
