Murphy, Michael - It is with great sadness the family of the late Michael Murphy, age 83, from Open Hall, announce his peaceful passing at the Bonavista Hospital on January 27, 2005. Leaving to mourn with many loving memories are his wife Betty; daughters; Cathy (Earl Hobbs), Shirley (Elias Keough), Brenda (Jerry Dooley), Christina, Linda (Len Oldford); sons Jerry (Julia), Danny (Juanita), Michael (Joyce), Jason (Gloria); 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nephews and five nieces and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Rested at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Open Hall, from where the funeral service, officiated by Father Hearn, took place on Tuesday, February 2, 2005 with interment following. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Vardy’s Funeral Home, Random Island.

Martin, Evelyn M. - Passed away suddenly at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on Sunday, January 30, 2005, Evelyn M. Martin of Clarenville, formerly of Grand Falls-Windsor, aged 81 years. Predeceased by her parents Harry and Ida Day. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband Lloyd of 60 years; sisters Gladys Knight at Indianapolis, Indiana, Delilah Hiscock (Roy) at Grand Falls-Windsor and Marie Brant at Deseronto, Ontario; brother Gordon Day at Ottawa, Ontario, and Gerald Day at Grand Falls-Windsor; and a number of nieces and nephews along with a circle of relatives and friends. Rested at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral service held on Tuesday 1, 2005, from Memorial United Church, Clarenville, with interment at Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery. In his memory a Memorial Fund to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic, St. John’s. Evelyn was active in the Royal Canadian Legion, Clarenville Branch 27 and the Ladies Auxiliary.

King: Passed peacefully away at the Golden Heights Manor on February 2, 2005, Marjorie Flora King (nee Critch), age 88, from Hickman’s Harbour. Leaving to mourn with many loving memories her only daughter, Inez Marsh; grandchildren, Darrin (Sylvia), James (Joanne), Tony (Tammy), Richard (Melanie), Susan (David) and Todd (Audrey); nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Janet and Una Critch; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Rested at the United Church, Hickman’s Harbour, from where the funeral service, officiated by Mrs. Elsie Squires, took place on Sunday, February 6. Marjorie was laid to rest at the United Church Cemetery, Hickman’s Harbour. Funeral arrangements intrusted to Vardy’s Funeral Home, Random Island.

Baker: It is with great sadness the family of the late Alexander Baker, age 90, from Hillview, announce his peaceful passing at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on February 6, 2005. Predeceased by wife, Annie; daughter, Cheryl and Merdick. Leaving to mourn are his children, Tom (Cecilia), Angela (Os), Wavey (Gilles), Carol Ann (Carter), Maurice (Violet), Doral (Ken), Bernette (Bruno), Faith (Marcel) and Merlin (Kim); brothers, Allan and Simeon Baker; and a large number of other relatives and friends. Rested at the Grace United Church, Hillview, from where the funeral service, officiated by Rev. G. Jarvis, took place on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, with interment following. Chaulk, William L. - Passed peacefully away at Lakeside Homes, Gander, on February 7, 2005, William L. Chaulk of Charlottetown, aged 94 years. Predeceased by wife, Hazel, son, Douglas and brothers, Leslie, Dwight, Mack, Ernest and Roy. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his daughters, Sue (Ches Ash) at Gander, Blanche (Al Lafayette) at Florida, Phyllis (Dave Crocker) at Charlottetown, Edna (Cal Murphy) at Charlottetown and Judy (Ray Collins) at Kilbride; sons, Les (Mamie) at Charlottetown, Melvin (Ina) at Newmarket, Ontario, Jack (Linda) at Cornwell, Ontario, Glen (Enid) at Triton, Dennis (Jenny) at Charlottetown and Boyce (Doreen) at Toronto; sister, Nellie Brown at Trinity; brother, Ralph Chaulk at Bunyan’s Cove; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a large circle of relatives and friends. Rested at United Church, Charlottetown. Funeral service held on Thursday, February 10, 2005, from United Church, Charlottetown, with interment at United Cemetery, Charlottetown. In his memory, a donation may be made to a local community charity of one’s choice or Lakeside Homes, Gander.

 

Pelley: Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Complex on February 2, 2005, after a long battle with cancer, Edmund Frederick Pelley, age 69, formerly from Brittania. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Doreen; children, Tom (Kathleen) Ivany, Nancy (Jamie) Antle and Peter (Krista) Pelley; sisters, Lillian Pelley and Ena Flyte; grandchildren, Kimberley, Dallas and Matthew; and many other relatives and friends. Rested at Vardy’s Funeral Home. The funeral service, officiated by Mrs. Elsie Squires, took place on Saturday, February 5, 2005, from the United Church in Britannia with interment following.

Strong, Marguerita Christina - Passed away at the Golden Heights Manor, Bonavista, on Monday, February 7, 2005, Rita Strong of Clarenville, aged 89 years. Predeceased by her husband, Sam; daughters, Phyllis and Marina; and parents, William and Mae Long. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her son, Jim (Enid) at Clarenville; grandsons, Glen and David (Kelly); granddaughters, Heather (Ivan) and Margaret Anne; great-granddaughter, Kellie; son-in-law, William Rose at Harcourt; sisters, Mary Laite at St. John’s, Myrtle Reid at New Brunswick and Lill Leblanc at Florida; brothers, Bill Long (Dulcie) and Jim Long (Edna); dear friends, Mac and Barbara Russell at Bay Roberts and Velma Goodyear; also other relatives and friends. White, Arthur Watts - It is with great sadness the family of the late Arthur Watts White, age 75, from Trinity, announce his peaceful passing in the presence of his loving family at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on February 11, 2005. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 53 years, Florence; sons Wayne (Carol), Keith (Della), Derek (Colette); daughters Pauline (Cyril) Bartlett, Joan (Wade) Ivany, Betty (Ron) Johnson; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Margaret Spurrell (Tom deceased); brother Gerald (Grace deceased); and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Rested at the Mortuary Chapel, Trinity. Funeral service, officiated by Rev. Robert C. Oldford, took place from St. Paul’s Church on Monday, Februry 14, 2005. Arthur was laid to eternal rest at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Trinity. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Vardy’s Funeral Home, Random Island.

Strong, Angela - Passed peacefully away at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on February 10, 2005, age 79 years. Predeceased by husband Charles; brothers Alex and James Ayles; half brothers Harold Strickland, Jack Strickland and Israel Ayles; half sister Bertha Ayles; parents James and Ellen Ayles. She leaves to mourn brother Nathaniel (Mary) Ayles; brother-in-law James (Jessie) and Donald (Nita); sister-in-law Jean, Rona, Beulah and Marjorie; sons Charles (Monica) and Dean; daughters Donna (Barry), Marguerite (Arthur) and Patricia (Douglas); grandchildren Scott, Nancy (Todd), Jason (Tara Lynn), Dana (Steve), Steven, Kristopher, Jennifer, Jessica and Samantha; many other relatives and friends. Rested at Strathie’s Funeral Home, Bonavista. The funeral service was held on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Memorial United Church, Bonavista, by Reverend Tony Cole, with interment at United Church Cemetery. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Annie Bertha of 64 years; daughters Alice (Clarence Peddle) at Clarenville, Dinah (Melvin Avery) at Long Beach and Doris (Max Smith) at Hodge’s Cove; sons Ken (Gina) at Burin, Eric (Barbara) at Ontario and Howard at Clarenville; sisters Evelyn Dwyer at Grand Falls, Dinah Ballinger at Carolina, USA, and Florence Peddle at Hodge’s Cove; brother Otto Martin (Nellie) at Little Hearts Ease; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral service held on Friday, February 18, 2005, from Bethel United Church, Little Hearts Ease, with interment at United Cemetery, Little Hearts Ease. Simmons: It is with great sadness the family of the late Hayward Ralph Simmons, age 81, from Hickman’s Harbour, announce his passing at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on February 21, 2005. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Clemy (nee Green); 12 children; Cyril, Clyde (Cynthia), Albert, Edgar (Mottie), Gary (Bernice), Terry (Sherry), Violet (Ford Avery), Joyce (Clifford Avery), Joan (Bill Zarras), Lily (Stewart Marsh), Diane, Rhonda (Randy Verge); 30 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; brothers: Reginald, Harold (Edna), Wilfred (Wanda); sisters: Lilah, Florrie (friend Doug), Bertha (Kevin), Jean (Cecil), Elsie (Will); and many other relatives and friends. Hoskins, Lillian M. - Passed away at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, Lillian Mae Hoskins (Clouter) of Port Blandford in her 85th year. Predeceased by her husband Lester (1995), daughters Bernice Keats (1973) and Ina Harris (1991) and sister Emeline Oldford (1999). Remembered by son Leo (Judy) at Princeton; son-in-law Beaton Harris (Annie) at Port Blandford; brothers Max (Nellie) at Port Blandford, Ern (Joyce) at Port Blandford and Gerald (Marg) at Gander; sisters Veneta Anstey (Oswald) at Gander and Edith Matthews (Sidney) at Port Blandford; sister-in-law Daphne Snow at South River; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren ; two great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; Rested at Alton United Church, Port Blandford. Furlong, Garry - On Sunday, February 20, 2005, Garry Furlong of Whitecourt, AB, formerly of Kings Cove, Newfoundland, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at the age of 48 years. Garry will always be loved and never forgotten by Lorraine, his wife of 25 years; children, April (Bern), Curtis (Tina) and Garrett; his brothers and sisters, Don, Joan (Toby) Greening, Bill (Patricia), Ann (Adrian) Hollaran, Joe, Pierce (Leona), Gertie Galiant, Bonnie (Austin) Hollaran, Fred (Shirley) and Jackie (Larry) Prince; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by his parents, Blanche and Tom. Garry was a native Newfoundlander, having come to Alberta just four years ago. He worked hard in the oil patch. Garry had a love of helping others, children, his neighbours, or strangers. He believed in a down to earth, sensible lifestyle and like the coffee he enjoyed, “He was good to the last drop.” Garry will be dearly missed. Private family time remembering Garry is taking place at this time. An inurnment will be held at a later date in St. James, Kings Cove, Newfoundland. Miller, Dorothy Jessie - It is with great sadness the family of the late Dorothy Jessie Miller announce her passing on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook at the age of 89 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her sons Walter (Lucy) at Old Bonaventure and Edward (Betty) at Schooner Cove; daughters Annie (Stanley Kane) at Pasadena and Emma (Wilfred Chaulk) at Corner Brook; special grandson Gordon Miller (Joselyn) at Old Bonaventure; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; brother Whitfield McGrath (Nina) at New Bonaventure; sister Alfreda Webster at Clarenville; special nephew Roy McGrath (Susie) at Shoal Harbour; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Hubert, daughter Barbara, sister Martha Whitty-Stone and brother James McGrath. Visitation was held at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue, Corner Brook, on Wednesday, February 23. Visitation continued at Anglican Church, New Bonaventure, on Thursday, February 24, 2005. The funeral service was held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, New Bonaventure, on Saturday, February 26, 2005, with Rev Oldford officiating . Interment followed at the Anglican Cemetery, Old Bonaventure. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville.
