Boyd Abbott
Passed on: July 23rd, 2016

It is with such great sadness that the family of Boyd Abbott of Bonavista announce his passing at the age of 71. Boyd was predeceased by his parents, Jose and Dot Abbott and his parents in law, Charlie and Mary Tizzard of St. John's. He is so very lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 47 years, Libby and his children, Michael (Angie), Michelle Groves (Brian), Melanie Russell (Dave) and Melissa Noseworthy (Richard). He also leaves with fond memories, his beloved grandchildren, Griffin Abbott, Maria and Isaac Groves and Charlie and Jillian Russell. Also left to mourn with many wonderful memories are his large extended family of Tizzard in-laws and his ever loyal friend, Doug. Boyd was employed by the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation from the time a store opened in Bonavista until his retirement in 1997. His career was varied prior to that including teaching, administrative assistant and stadium manager. Boyd was also a lifelong member of the Lion's Club and relished his role as such. He was also a volunteer on many boards and groups over the years including the Matthew Legacy and the Bonavista Recreation Committee, among others. Boyd also served as a coach for the Cabots hockey team for a number of years. Additionally, because he loved his hometown immeasurably and was always ready to serve, he became deputy mayor from 1989-1992 and served as mayor from 1992-1994. In his younger years Boyd was also an avid and talented hockey player who was often described to his family as being one of the best to ever come out of Bonavista. When he hung his skates up in the summer months, his sport of choice was softball. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Strathie's Funeral Home in Bonavista. Cremation followed his funeral service which was held on July 26 at the Memorial United Church. Donations in his memory may be made to either the Arthritis Society or Alzheimer's Society.
We are now unsure how to go on without your quiet, gentle guidance and wisdom, but we are certain you will lead us with love in your own way.
