Isabelle Vardy
Passed on: August 5th, 2013

On August 5, 2013 Belle passed away, age 87 years. She spent the last few months in a nursing home, blinded by macular degeneration and battling the demons of dementia. She was widely known for her simple acts of kindness, along with a deeply rooted sense of family. She was born and raised in Burgoyne's Cove, proud of her humble roots, leaving at the age of 16 for work in Clarenville. A loving mother of Verna and Doug; cherished grandmother, Nan, of Jamie, Robin and Beth - always encouraging them and celebrating all of their milestones, while praying they would be safe; loving great grandmother of seven delightful faces - Katelyn, Joshua, Megan, Alix, Grace and Jace; loving sister to Vinie Stanley and Rowena Humphries and devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband, Alex, son-in-law, Ken Nicholson, brothers, Wandsworth, Willis and Earl Penney and sister, Elizabeth Pritchett. Isabelle "Belle" - volunteer with many community based organizations; hotel proprietor; boarding house keeper to teachers and RCMP, serving up home cooked meals daily and never forgetting to starch their shirt collars; darner of wool socks. She had deep faith in God and supported her church and its organizations. At Christmastime there would be plastic bags left dangling from doorknobs containing raisin bread, chocolates for the bank girls, and so it went. Like Dorothea in George Eliot's "Middlemarch", her full nature spent itself in deeds which left no great name on the earth, but the effect of her being on those around her was incalculable. I hope God is in the Heavens and opens the door for Mom with a pot of tea ready. Tremendous thanks to Placentia Health Care Centre and Cozy Quarters staffs for their compassionate care. Burial service was held August 9, 2013 with interment at the Clarenville United Church Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the United Church Cemetery Fund.
