DALE, Margaret W. - On Tuesday, December 21, 1999 in her 76th year, at Riverbend Place, Cambridge, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer`s through which she maintained her infectious laugh, the twinkle in her eye and her love of music, friends and family. Margaret Dale (nee Bill) is the beloved wife of the late Jack Dale. Margaret will be remembered by her family, friends and work colleagues for her dedication to the teaching profession and her love and care of the children she taught during her 16 years as a special education teacher at Cecil Cornwall, Manchester and Dickson Public Schools in the Waterloo Region District School Board. Margaret`s children cherish the memory of a loving mother who encouraged her children to pursue their dreams. She demonstrated that by fulfilling her own dream of a University Education. Margaret returned to school at the age of 41 and graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.A. Ed. at 45 years of age. She loved family life and devoted particular energy to ensuring wonderful family vacations. She will be fondly remembered by her daughters: Pat, husband Loyd Blenkhorn, Berwick Nova Scotia, Linda Dale, husband Brian Tomlinson, Ottawa and Nancy Dale, husband Leslie Tait, Toronto; as well as her grandchildren: Sarah, Madeleine, Angelica and Samuel. The family wish to extend a special thanks to Sherron Bradfield who has provided devotion and care to Mom`s needs for many years and also in recent years to Riverbend Place for their compassion and attention to both our Mother and her family. A memorial service will be conducted in the chapel of COUTTS & SON FUNERAL HOME, 96 ST. ANDREWS ST., CAMBRIDGE on Friday, December 24th, 1999 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Wayne Dawes of Knox`s Galt officiating. A reception will follow in Coutts Family Reception Cottage. Cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Alzheimer`s Association or Riverbend Place Residence Activity Program.

DALLEY, Ross M. - Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Center on Saturday, July 3, 1999, after a very courageous 19 month battle with Cancer, Ross Dalley, age 49 years, presently at Holyrood. He was the former Region Manager of Investors Group in St. John`s and P.E.I. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Linda (nee Cook); daughters: Lisa and Nola (Rod Noseworthy); parents: Angus and Elfreda of Twillingate; his sisters: Dianne (Everett) Morris of Portugal Cove and Cherry Dalley (John Connors) of St. John`s; his brother Barrie of Toronto, Ont. Also mourning are his father and mother-in-law: Angus and Joan Cook; sisters-in-law: Cathay (George) Wade of Calgary, Ingrid (Jim) Dodd of Claresholm, Alberta; and Debra (Pat) Wieshlow of Nepean, Ont.; brother-in-law Angus Cook Jr. (Joanne) of St. John`s. Ross will be sadly missed by his Aunts, Uncles and Cousins in Twillingate, Salmon Cove, Nova Scotia and his many friends across Canada, especially those with Investors Group. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at 2 p.m. from Church of Ascension, Mt. Pearl. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. DAVIS, Alfred (Fred) - Labrador City, NF. Passed away peacefully and quietly at the Captain William Jackman Memorial Hospital in Labrador City, Newfoundland, on Friday, February 12, 1999, Alfred (Fred) Davis at the young age of 61 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of thirty-six years, Joan (nee Hefferton) and two lovely daughters: Suzanne Small (husband George Small) of Lewisporte, Newfoundland and Marlene (Dee) Davis (spouse Shawn Delurey) of Labrador City, Newfoundland. Also left with very precious and fond memories are his two grandchildren: Christopher and Laura Small of Lewisporte, Newfoundland. He also leave to mourn his mother, Daisy Davis of Musgravetown; and two brothers: Berkley Davis (wife Stella) of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and William Davis (spouse Rita) of Musgravetown, Newfoundland; and one sister Marlene Fitzgerald (husband Jack) of Musgravetown, Newfoundland. He also left behind many family members and a very large circle of friends. Memorial service took place on Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carol United Church in Labrador City, Newfoundland, with a very large crowd in attendance. Cremation was under the supervision of Penney`s Funeral Home, Labrador City, Newfoundland.

DAVIS, Rev. Reuben M. - Passed peacefully away at Yarmouth, NS on Thursday, October 21, 1999, Rev. Reuben M. Davis, formerly of Freshwater, Carbonear in his 81st year. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Elizabeth Davis, stepmother Leah (Lilly) Davis and brother Ben. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Alice; three sons: John, Rev. Kenneth and Stephen; one daughter Karen and sister Melvina Moores, Carbonear; nine grandchildren; also, a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services took place from Temple United Baptist Church, Yarmouth, NS on Sunday, October 24, 1999. Interment was in Yarmouth, NS.

DAWE, Marjorie Frances (nee Pretty) - Passed peacefully away after a short illness on Thursday, January 7, 1999, at the Health Sciences Complex, Marjorie Dawe of Dildo, aged 80 years. Predeceased by husband L. Clarence Dawe, December 13, 1998. Leaving to mourn three brothers: Colin Pretty, Dildo, Boyd Pretty (Viola), Dildo, James Pretty, Guelph, Ontario; also lovingly remembered by a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Resting at Warren`s Funeral Home, Dildo. The funeral service will be held from All Saints Anglican Church, Dildo on Saturday, January 9 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Coley`s Point, Bay Roberts. DAY, Edward L. - Suddenly, at Toronto, on January 3, 1999, Edward Lawrence Day in his 52nd year, following a brief illness. Survived by his loving wife Linda, son Scott, and daughter-in-law Chrissy. Dearly loved and sadly missed by his mother Chorine of St. John`s and brothers David of St. John`s, Fraser (and wife Nicole) of Montreal, John of St. John`s and Gary of Toronto. Lovingly remembered by his parents-in-law Chester and Magretta Powers of St. John`s; sisters-in-law: Maxine (and husband Harold Stanley) of Grand Falls, Judy (and husband Lloyd Melendy) of St. John`s, and Diane (and husband Frank Manstan) of Labrador City; and numerous other family relatives. DAY, Richard Edward - Peacefully at Simcoe Manor, Beeton, Ontario on Saturday, August 28th, 1999, in his 82nd year. Loving husband of Edith (Hallett); Loved and respected father and father-in-law of Delores and Jim, Tom and Joan, Edward and Sharron, Ellen and Stewart, Madge and Albert (deceased), as well as Bruce (deceased) and Roberta of St. John`s, Newfoundland. Cherished grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren in Newfoundland, Ontario and B.C. Dear brother of Donald, Daniel, Joyce, Muriel, John and the late Geraldine and Mildred. Dick will be remembered by his family and friends as a well read, intelligent, hard working, kind and gentle man with a twinkle in his eye, who enjoyed music and family gatherings. DeGRUCHY, Philip George - Passed away, after a short illness, at the Grace Hospital, March 29th, 1999, Mr. Philip George DeGruchy (RCN, WWII). Born in Rencontre West November 27th, 1917. Predeceased by parents Ruben DeGruchy and Edith Stone and sister Sylvia Peters (Victor). DeLONG, John Gilmore (Gil) - RCAF Captain (Retired), passed away in his sleep on September 5, 1999, aged 74 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Daisy; their four sons: Campbell (Irene), David (Rhonda), Ian (Patty) and Scott (Kim); sister Muriel and brother Maurice. Gil and Daisy were the grandparents of eight: Andrea, Christine, Paige, Allison, Anthony, Kiley, Michael and Michaela. Gil proudly served his country in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1945 to 1971. He was especially proud of his contributions to the Search and Rescue wing of the Armed Forces. Gil will be missed. He made an impression on us all. A Service of Remembrance was held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 187 Trunk Road, Duncan, B.C. on Thursday, September 9, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend Kerry McIntrye officiating. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories, sisters Anne Roche (Halifax, N.S.); Eileen Cooke (St. John`s); Loretta Armstrong (Bob) (Levack, Ont.); thirty-eight nieces and nephews, and many cousins and other special relatives and friends in LaScie, Gander, St. John`s and Toronto. DUGGAN, Margaret Ellen - Passed peacefully away at the Palliative Care Unit, Breyére Hospital, Ottawa, on Sunday, August 29, 1999, after a short, but courageous battle with cancer, Margaret Ellen Duggan, age 85 years. Predeceased by her sisters: Hannah Mary (Nance), Irene Olson and Rita Ditullio. Leaving to mourn sisters: Mary McCormick, Gertrude Renouf and Dorothy Sheppard; a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. At Margaret`s request, she will be cremated and returned to Newfoundland for burial. The interment will take place at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Grand Falls-Windsor, Nfld. on Wednesday, September 8, 1999 following a Memorial Mass (11:00 a.m.) at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. A special Mass will be held at St. Theresa`s Church, Ottawa at a later date.

DUNBAR, Isobel Moira, OC, FRSC - Passed away peacefully at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital on November 22, 1999, aged 81 years. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, she came to Canada in 1947 with a geography degree from Oxford, after seven years on the professional stage in England. In Ottawa she worked for the Defence Research Board surveying sea ice from aircraft and icebreakers. One of the first women to fly over the North Pole, she became an expert on sea ice, co-authored ŒArctic Canada from the Air`, and published many scientific papers from 1952 to 1978. Retired in 1978, she began her third incarnation` as a hobby farmer` in Dunrobin and an active volunteer for the March Historical Society at the Pinhey`s Point Foundation. Predeceased by her brother Maxwell John Dunbar, OC, FRSC. Leaving to mourn her passing are her sister Elizabeth Jenkins and eight nieces and nephews: Anne Rowley, Peter Jenkins, Dougal, William, Elizabeth, Andrew, Christine and Robyn Dunbar, and a large circle of friends. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary`s Church, Dunrobin, Saturday, December 4th at 11:00 a.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in her name may be made to Oxfam Canada or Amnesty International.

Susanna, daughter of the late Andrew and Winnifred Squires of St. Philips. Predeceased by her husband Ralph Sr. in 1985; son-in-law Les Sparkes, 1998; her brothers: Gerald, Jack; and sister Ellen. Leaving to mourn three loving children; son Ralph Jr. (Dorothy), Mt. Pearl; daughters: Frances Sparkes, Kelligrews and Terry Richardson (Bill), Paradise; eight loving grandchildren and two special great-granddaughters; brother David Squires (Kathleen), Connecticut, USA; sister Frances Longobucco, Oklahoma, USA; sisters-in-law: Rhoda Squires and family, Rita Smith (Gordon) and family; special sister-in-law and friend Mary Dunne and family; brother-in-law Harry Dunne, Cormack; other relatives and friends. DUNPHY, Sister Mary Camillus, RSM - Passed peacefully away at McAuley Convent on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, Sister Mary Camillus Dunphy, formerly of Red Island, Placentia Bay, aged 100 years. Leaving to mourn her community, the Sisters of Mercy and many nieces and nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews of the extended Dunphy, McCarthy and Ryan families. Waking at McAuley Convent, Waterford Bridge Road on Wednesday, March 17th, 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 18th until 9:00 p.m. Eucharistic Liturgy of Christian Burial Friday, March 19, 1999 at 11:00 a.m., Corpus Christi Church, Waterford Bridge Road with interment to follow at Belvedere Cemetery. DUNPHY, Patrick William - Of Dartmouth died December 8, 1999, in his 76th year, at the Q.E. II Health Sciences (Victoria General Site) in Halifax. Born in Curling, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary (Rockett) Dunphy. He received his high school education at the Sacred Heart School in Curling. He went to work at Furlong Bros. Herring Plant and Coombs Department Store before joining the firm Humber Motors Ltd. in 1954. In 1964 he purchased the automobile dealership from the estate of his father-in-law, and continued to operate the same until 1978 when he sold the company to Derek Young C.A. He was a member of the Archbishop Howley Council of the Knights of Columbus for many years and was an Honorary Life Member. He was also an Honorary Member of Rotary International. During his years in the automobile business he served a term as president of the Newfoundland Auto Dealers Association and was a director of the Canadian Auto Dealers Association; he also served as a director of the Ford Dealer Advisory Council. During his business career he also served a year as president of the Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce and a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Wiseman; one daughter Barbara MacEwen (John) and their children, Patrick and Lori-Beth, all of Dartmouth. Also surviving are his sisters: Gertrude McLennan (John), Joan O`Driscoll (Francis); and brothers: Gerald (Grace), William (Irene), Kenneth (Renata); and a large circle of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Rita Milani and brothers Francis and Harold. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 (Thursday) today in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. Peters Roman Catholic Church (Maple St., Dartmouth). Cremation will follow with burial at a later date in Oakridge Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. In lieu, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

DUTKA, Sheila M. - Passed peacefully away after a courageous battle with cancer at her residence in St. John`s, on Thursday, May 20, 1999, Sheila Dutka, aged 72 years. Predeceased by her husband Stefan. Fitzgerald, in her 85th year, of Seal Cove. Predeceased by her husband Frederick (Nov. 28, 1974) and her son, Paul (May 10, 1983). FLEMING, Gerald Francis (Gerry) - Suddenly and peacefully, early on Sunday, October 24th, 1999 at Perth, Ontario at the age of 69 years. Gerry was born October 29th, 1929 at St. John`s, Newfoundland, was a decorated Koreon/Canadian Navy Veteran (1949-1953), an Air Traffic Controller at Gander, Newfoundland (1954-1974), ARCO Canada (1974 to retirement 1985) and a member of Commissioners of Canada, Ottawa Division. He was a modest artist encompassing painting, carving, writing and sculpting. Beloved husband of Agnes (Knight) Fleming, cherished father of Chris, Nick, Paula, Noel, Fabian (Suzanne), Vaughan (Marjorie) and Mary (Pat) Delanty, he will be sadly missed by grandchildren Jeff, Barbara, John, Kayti, Ben, Jessica, Brody, Bailey, Brittany and beloved pet Tessie, pleasantly admired by neighbours, fellow artists and friends. Friends may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, Perth, Tuesday, October 26th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Johns Church, Perth, Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. immediately followed by a reception for family and friends. FOLLETT, Ralph Norman - (1908-1999). On Monday, July 12, 1999, at North York General Hospital, Toronto. son of the late John Charles and Laura Follett of Western Bay, Newfoundland. Beloved husband of the late Perle Catherine (nee Foster). Lovingly remembered by his daughters, Angela Beauchamp, Marilyn Sale, and Patricia, his son John and wife Caren, and his son Robert and wife Deborah. Grandfather of Neil, Elizabeth, Jeffrey, and Christopher. Devoted brother to the late Elvie Follett. Ralph`s 52-year career with the Bank of Nova Scotia included appointments in Kitchener, Hamilton, Cochrane, Cornwall, and Toronto. A private service was held for family members. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a reception in the Leaside Room at the Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto (1-800-616-3311), on Thursday, July 15 from 7-9 p.m.. FRENCH, Winston Oswald - On Friday, July 16, 1999, Winston Oswald French passed away peacefully in his 87th year at his residence in Ottawa. Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (Bessie), loving father of Elizabeth Millar (Rob), Cynthia Lawson (Frank), Barbara de Jong (Dick) and John (Karen), and proud grandfather of Jamie, Sarah, Laura (deceased), Meghan, Jeffrey, Rachel, Matthew and Louise. Fondly remembered by his brother Bert and sister-in-law Clare. Winston was born in The Dock, Bareneed, Newfoundland in 1912. A graduate of Dalhousie University, he joined the navy in December, 1941. During WWII he served aboard Canadian corvettes engaged in convoy escort and patrol duty in the north Atlantic. A former provincial and federal public servant, Winston worked as a Chartered Accountant with National Revenue (Customs and Excise) until his retirement in 1977. After retirement, Winse and Bessie enjoyed many summers at The Dock where he spent his youth. Respecting Winse`s wishes, the family has donated his body to science. A memorial service will be held on August 22 at Pinecrest Memorial Chapel, Ottawa. Donations in Winse`s memory to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind are gratefully acknowledged by the family. Arrangements in care of the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry.
