DECKER, Calvin
A Celebration of Life for Calvin Decker
Calvin Decker
, age 50, passed away at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, on June 25, 2008. Calvin is survived by his loving wife Rhonda. He was the loving father of Merika (Reg); grandchildren Shellden, RJ, Richard and Alissa of Parsons Pond, Bobbi-Jean (Clancy) and grandson Shaye Calvin of Brampton, Ontario; daughter Kaila (Benje) of Parsons Pond. He was the son of Mae and Aubrey Decker of Parsons Pond, grandson of 95-year-old Mabel and the late Thomas Decker of Parsons Pond. He was predeceased by Martha and Archibald Brown. He was the brother of Maude (Gord) of North York, Ontario, Blanche (Monte), Rodney (Jamie Lynn) and Leon, all of Parsons Pond. He will be missed by Miranda (Corey), Terri-Lynn, Emma and nephew Eric, as well as many relatives and friends. Calvin was an avid outdoorsman and left school at the age of 14 years to become a commercial fisherman and fished until Wednesday, June 18, 2008. Eighteen years ago Calvin was diagnosed with a rare disease now known as Fabry Disease and 15 years ago received the ‘Gift of Life’ via kidney transplant. Calvin lived life to the fullest. He felt that one should never sit around and take life for granted and so he spent every minute in the outdoors believing that “anything that could be done in the morning should not be left for the evening.” Unable to do anything about the disease that was taking control of his body he kept control of his life by keeping a massive vegetable garden, berry picking, cutting his firewood, and hunting when his fishing season was done. In the fall of 2000 Calvin participated during the filming of an outdoor video with C. Michael Cooley and Lee Lieburn, from the Sportsman Channel, who filmed the annual migration of the Woodland Caribou on the Flat Hills near Parsons Pond, as well as a local moose hunt. This film aired on TV in all fifty states! He was an employee of Kruger, as a wood cutter for many years. Calvin enriched the lives of many who knew him through his knowledge gained by his personal experiences.
“A True Story of a Real Man”
Who in the end held his family together
As only a real man can, My husband, a man with poise
You were a father, grandfather, son, grandson, uncle, cousin and friend
The Epitome of a real man
.
You will be forever with us as you continue the next cycle of your life! A celebration of Calvin’s life was held at his home in Parsons Pond with a private service by his family. Interment followed at the Gospel Hall Cemetery in Daniel’s Harbour on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 4 p.m. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parsons Funeral Home in Deer Lake.
When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself
Art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted
Wealth becomes useless, and reason is powerless.
