APPLIN, Priscilla
Born: April 13th, 1963
Passed on: July 1st, 2016

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Priscilla Applin. She passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 1, 2016 at the age of 53, surrounded by family. Priscilla will be lovingly remembered by Eric Applin (husband); Corwin Applin (Nicole White), Jasmine Applin (Bryan Haine); her grandsons Carter and Jaxson; her many sisters and brothers, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. BLAKE, Mabel
Passed on: July 8th, 2016
Mabel Blake (nee Hedderson)
passed away on July 8, 2016 at the age of 79 years. Along with her twin sister Millie, Mabel was born, the last of ten children, to Sarah (Patey) and George Hedderson of Straitsview. On January 24, 1956 she married Carson Blake of Straitsview and together they raised four children and were blessed with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She leaves to mourn her sons Cyril (Barbara), and George (Sandra); daughters Christine (Wilfred), and Norma (Dallas); sister Millie; sisters-in-law Mae and Nellie Hedderson; grandchildren Jennifer (Neil), Dustin (Charlene), Mitch (Angel), Christopher, Cameron, and Maria; great-grandchildren Keira, Eric, Frederick, Shelby, and Kenzie; special friend Francis Blake as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Mabel was predeceased by her husband Carson in 1996, and by her brothers Augustus, Willis, Gordon, Ed, Sisters Eliza, Irene, Vida, and Florie. Visitation was held at Central United Church on Quirpon branch from where the funeral was held on Monday, July 11 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. Interment followed in the Quirpon Community Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

CAINES, Harriet
Born: December 11th, 1943
Passed on: July 10th, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Harriet Caines (nee Wentzell) announces her sudden passing on Sunday, July 10, 2016 in her 73rd year at the Bonne Bay Health Centre in Norris Point. Harriet will be greatly missed by her husband Asaph Caines of 52 years; her children Faron (Donna Gibbons) and Michelle (Jeff) Caines; her grandchildren Jeremy, Janeeca, and Jessica Hynes, and her great grandchildren Megan Cochrane and Bree Greenham. She also leaves to mourn her brother Clyde (Sylvia) Wentzell and her sisters Claudia Kennedy, and Geraldine (Sandy) House. Harriet also leaves to mourn a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, extended family and friends. Harriet was predeceased by her parents Cornelious and Mary Jane Wentzell. She was also predeceased by her brother Rendell Wentzell and her sister Bertha Knott. Visitation took place at St. Joseph's Anglican Church in Portland Creek on Tuesday and Wednesday. The funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 with Reverend Canon Terry Rose officiating with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery in Portland Creek. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Parsons Funeral Home in Deer Lake.

DENNEY, Cordellia V
Born: July 8th, 1936

Cordellia Denney
passed away on July 2, 2016 at the age of 79 years. Cordellia was born July 8, 1936 to Andrew and Emma (Amy) Canning of Roddickton. She married Fred Denney of Englee and raised their only son Everett. Cordellia was a very special soul with a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and have fun. She loved her family dearly; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to her. She leaves to mourn her son Everett (Tina); grandchildren Christa, Megan and Nathan; great-grandchildren Noah and Hunter; brother Simon Canning (Clara); sisters Dorcas Cassell (Hubert) and Dora Eddison (Fred) along with a large circle of friends and relatives. She was Predeceased by her husband Fred Denney, parents Andrew and Emma (Amy) Canning, brothers Donald, Arthur and Walter Canning and sister Ruby Canning Pollard. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 5 at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Pentecostal Church in Roddickton with Pastor Ben Brown officiating. Interment followed in the Roddickton Pentecostal Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

McCARTHY, Mary Josephine
Passed on: July 5th, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary McCarthy announces her sudden passing on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook at the age of 73 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her sons Vincent (Sue), and Dwaine (Roxette); daughter Roxane (Jerry) Welsh; grandchildren Brittany (Dwane), Brent, Callie, Nikita, Haylie, Bryce, Fraeyja, Tyler (Sharon), and Taylor; great-grandchildren Claire, Ben, and Kaya; brothers John (Eliza), and Ben (Audrey); sisters Veronica, and Gertie (Melvin); her special friend Elaine Offrey, and a large circle of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her spouse George Applin, parents Isadore and Mary Lavers, brothers Arthur and Henry, sisters Maud, Amy, Rose, Irene, Angela, and Theresa, a very special aunt Dorabelle Pilgrim, and a very special friend George Plowman, brothers-in-law Bruce Lockemer, and Vandor Caines. The family would like to thank the nurses at Western Memorial Regional Hospital for their compassionate care of Mom during her short stay there, and to Dr. Mohammed for her compassionate care. The family received friends at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Port Saunders on Thursday, from where funeral service was held on Friday, July 8 at 2 p.m. with Father Raj officiating. O'KEEFE, June
Born: June 15th, 1932
Passed on: July 30th, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family of June O'Keefe announces her passing on July 30th, 2016 in Campbell River, B.C. June was born in Carmyllie, Scotland to Gertrude and David Gibb. She took her nurses training in Arbroath, Scotland followed by midwifery training in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and then her District Nursing training in Glasgow, Scotland. June worked as a District Nurse in Glasgow for one year before moving to Canada in 1957, planning to stay for only a few years. She worked in Port Saunders, NL, at the time a remote outport village. She was in sole charge of nursing care for thirteen settlements, including the Forestry Camp, providing everything from dental care to midwife skills. She met her husband Bob in Port Saunders and they were married in 1958. They had five children before he passed away in 1963. Over the years June raised her children and worked in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland before moving to Saskatoon in 1979 to continue her career with Corrections Canada at the Regional Psychiatric Center. In 1983 June completed the Canadian Nursing Unit Administration Program. June retired at age 62 and moved to Vancouver Island as the weather and the ocean reminded her of Scotland. June is predeceased by her husband, Robert Ronald O'Keefe (1963) and her sister Marjorie Reid of Scotland. June is survived by her loving children; Anne (Ron) Blanchard, Tyrone O'Keefe, Perry (Rene) O'Keefe, Fern (Paul) Giesbrecht, Karen O'Keefe; her grandchildren Bob Blanchard, Dustin (Rebecca) Giesbrecht, Tonya O'Keefe, Bryan O'Keefe, Daniel (JoseƩ) Blanchard, Shannon (Cliff) Hyrcha, Julian Blanchard, Larissa McAuley, Kyrstyn McAuley-O'Keefe, Genevieve (Kevin) Gallagher, Amanda Armstrong, Nicole Armstrong; great-grandchildren Gabriel, Camden, Jasper, Ava, Samantha, and newly born Hendrix, and her nephews David and William Reid and their families in Scotland. June was known for her kind and loving nature. She loved gardening and took great pride in her houseplants and flower beds. She loved bagpipes, bonfires on the beach, bird watching, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. June loved animals and would take in any stray (animal or human) in need of help. June was devoted to her family and has been a huge influence in her grandchildren's lives. The family would like to thank Dr. Proctor and the North team of Home Support and Nursing for the excellent care they provided. At June's request there will be no service. She will be cremated with her ashes to be scattered at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Island Funeral Services/Elk Falls Crematorium, Campbell River, B.C., 250-287-3366.

PATEY, Jacob
Born: April 26th, 1919

Jacob Patey
passed away on July 9, 2016 at the age of 97 years. Jacob was born in Quirpon on April 26, 1919 to Moses and Clara Patey. It was there he met Beatrice Roberts and was married in 1944. Together they had 11 children. He leaves to mourn his sons Donald (Grace), and Enos (Karen); daughters Stella (Ralph), Elsie (Carl), Gladys (Truman), Nina (Gerald), Millie (Whyman), Pansy (Ross), and Triffie (Harrison); daughter-in-law Karen Patey; sister Blanche Strickland; brother Arch Patey; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Beatrice, sons Clayton and Baxter, sisters Louise and Una, brothers Gideon, Clarence and Lloyd, and son-in-law Ernest Patey. Visitation began at Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home and then moved to Central United Church on Quirpon branch from where the funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 12 at 2 p.m. with Major Bungay officiating. Interment followed in the Quirpon Community Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.

PILGRIM, Beatrice Violet

Beatrice Violet Pilgrim
passed away at the White Bay Central Health Centre in Roddickton on July 25, 2016 at the age of 73 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband Earl Pilgrim; sons Caesar (Barbara) Pilgrim, Baine (Nancy) Pilgrim, and Norman (Marsha) Pilgrim; daughter Nadine (Ian) Ellsworth; brothers Allan (Olive) Compton, Joe (Christine) Compton, and Ross (Carrie) Compton; sisters Louise Simms, Daisy (Ross) Decker, and Anne (Grand) Hancock, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of many other relatives and friends. Visitation was held at the Apostolic Faith Church in Roddickton from where the funeral service took place on Thursday, July 28 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Christopher Hewlett officiating. Interment followed in the New Apostolic Faith Cemetery in Roddickton. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.

RANDELL, Norman
Born: October 7th, 1932
Passed on: July 14th, 2016
Norman Randell
passed away on July 14, 2016 at the John M Gray Centre in St. Anthony at the age of 83 years. Norman was born on October 7, 1932 to the late Matthew and Bertha Randell of Whooping Harbour. He married the love of his life, Matilda Compton of Englee on November 15, 1955. Together they raised seven children, Wanda, Gideon (Judy), Ambrose, Vay (Christine), David (Sharon), Nelson (Deceased) and Osborne (Roxanne). Norman began his working career as a fisherman. He did this for many years and during the winter months he was employed by Bowaters and other companies as a cook. He spent several years cooking on the coastal boats and the whaling plant in Williamsport. Norman leaves to mourn six children; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one half-sister Edith Newman (Wilfred); one son-in-law Kevin and daughter-in-law Gloria and a large number of close family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife, his son, his parents, two brothers and two half-brothers. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee from where the funeral service was held on Monday, July 18 with Majors Ross and Brenda Bungay officiating. Interment followed in the Old Salvation Army Cemetery in Englee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for distribution among local youth groups. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.

TROY, Vincent Leo
Born: March 4th, 1939
Passed on: July 23rd, 2016
Vincent Leo Troy
passed away on July 23, 2016 at the age of 77 years. Vincent was born in Goose Cove on March 4, 1939 to Rita and Peter Troy. He was a very quiet man that was dearly loved by family and friends. Some of his favourite things were playing cards and playing bingo with his friends at the complex, and going for car rides. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his daughters Diane and Carol (Paul); brothers Mike, Felix (Edna), and Garry (Flo); brother-in-law Will Cull; sisters Minnie, and Gertie (Bax); sister-in-law Leone; grandchildren Jason, Kirby, Tyler, and Cooper as well as a large circle of other family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Rita and Peter Troy, sister Ann Cull, brother Dennis Troy, and brother-in-law Pat Walsh. Visitation took place at Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes in St Anthony beginning Sunday, July 24 and continuing on Monday, July 25. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 at the Roman Catholic Church in Goose Cove with Fr. Vitus Echedo officiating with interment following. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.
