Passed away peacefully at the John M. Gray Centre in St. Anthony on the 24th day of January 2015, Mr. James (Jimmy) Henry Acreman of St. Anthony in his 89th year. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memoires his brother John (Dorothy) Acreman of St. John's; sister-in-law Dorothy Acreman of Gander; niece Margie Acreman; nephews Ralph, Dennis, and Robert; his friend Kevin Simms as well as his neighbours, staff and friends at Shirley's Haven. He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Harriet Acreman of St. Anthony, brother Benjamin in Gander. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony followed by the funeral service which took place at the United Church in St. Anthony at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26 with Rev. Dinesh Gomes officiating. Interment followed at Fishing Point United Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. ANDERSON, Gower
Passed on: January 16th, 2015

Passed away peacefully at Shirley's Haven Personal Care Home in St. Anthony on the 16th of January, 2015, Mr. Gower Anderson of L'Anse aux Meadows in his 85th year. Left with fond and loving memories are his wife Dorothy (Nee Decker) of 58 years; his daughters Bernice (George), and Bonnie of St. Anthony, and Colleen (Eric) of Corner Brook; sons Gerald, Kevin (Donna), and Kirby (Lisa), all of St. John's; grandchildren Kristopher (Amanda) of St. John's, Tara-Lynn of Englee, Kathryn (Eric), Elizabeth, Kyle and Meghan, all of St. John's; brothers Alfred (Pearl) of St. Anthony, Maxwell (Gladys) of L'Anse aux Meadows, and Dorman (Rose) of St. John's; sister-in-law Helen Anderson of Savage Cove; brother-in-law Douglas (Frances) of Ontario; sisters-in-law Deborah, Ivy, and Juanita Decker, all of Cook's Harbour, Bessie Campbell (Seymour) of Cook's Harbour and Myrtle Elliott of Clarenville. Gower was predeceased by his parents Charles and Delena Anderson, brother Job, parents-in-law Garland and Dorcas Decker, brothers-in-law Reginald, Maxwell, Harold Decker and Ross Elliott. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony, after which the funeral service took place at the St. Mary's Anglican Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19 with Fr. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial followed at L'Anse aux Meadows Community Cemetery, In lieu of flowers, donations were accepted to the L'Anse aux Meadows Cemetery Fund (contact the funeral home for details). APPLIN, Rosanna

Passed peacefully away at Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders on the 23rd of January, 2015, Mrs. Rosanna Applin of Shoal Cove West in her 97th year. She leaves to mourn with a lifetime of loving memories her daughters Susan Baines, Dora Sinnicks, and Bessie McLean (Cliff); sons Eric Applin (Prescilla) and Garland Applin (Marina); grandchildren Vira Way (Glenn), Cavelle Gordon (Neil), Amanda McLean, Henry Plowman (Sarah), Jason Plowman (Shelby), Priscilla Genge (Roy), Craig Sinnicks (Penny), Jasmine Applin (Brian), and Corwin Applin (Nicole); great-grandchildren Hailey, Breana, Hannah, Kayla, Jaxson, Natasha, Brian, Kolton, Jasper, Angelica, Candice, Hayden, Kolby, Carter, and Ethan, as well as a large circle of other family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Eric, daughter Sarah, sons Stan, Ben, Jasper, Ivan, and Tom, granddaughter Darlene, grandsons Ramsey, Dale, Brian, and her parents Harry and Jane Coates. Visitation was held at St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Reef's Harbour from where the funeral service took place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27 with Rev. Harold Harvey and lay reader Bernice Baines officiating. Interment followed in the Anglican Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. BIGGIN, Aurelia Primose

It is with great sadness that the families of Aurelia Primrose Biggin (Nee House) of Daniel's Harbour (June 29, 1933 - January 22, 2015) announce her passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at the age of 81 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband Robert Primrose; children Lloyd Biggin, Eugene (Brenda) Biggin, Jeffrey (Merina) Biggin, Craig (Muriel) Biggin, Walter (Venice) Biggin, Elizabeth (Shane) Brown, Susan (Dexter) Payne, Joanne (Dallas) Biggin, and Penny Lee (Eric Gendran) Biggin; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; her siblings Sharon Gould, Lenora Biggin, Helen (Howard) Wells, Faye Rose, Eliza (Leo) Hynes, and Milton House; step-sister Lillian Noseworthy; and uncle Eric (Alma) House. Mother was predeceased by her husband, Eli Biggin, daughter Ruby Biggin, grandsons Drew Biggin and Mark Biggin, her mother Clara House Stevens, Carl House, the father of Penny lee Grendran, her sisters, Jane Allan, Rose House, Charlie Stevens, Julia Payne, Jane Hiscock, Nellie Hoskins, and Sarah House, Naamon House, Leslie House, George House, Tom House, and Walter House. Also leaving to mourn a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, family and friends. Passed peacefully away at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook on Jan. 24, 2015, Mr. Harold Bromley of Fishot Island in his 74th year. Leaving to mourn one son Darrin (Debbie); three grandchildren, Corey, Travis, and Kindra; three nieces and one nephew Loretta Casey (Steve,) Mary McCarthy, Jacinta (Lawrence) Gerard (Juanita) Clarence Mason, as well as a large number of grand and great-grand nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mom and dad, Rose and Arthur Bromley, sister Mary and brother-in-law Herbert and niece Rose. Visitation was held at the St. Edwards Church, Grandois, from where the funeral mass was held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Jan. 29 with Fr. Vitus officiating. BURDEN, Evelyn Dorothy
Passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2015 at Springdale Country Manor, Peterborough, Ontario in her 91st year, Evelyn Dorothy Burden (nee Elliott). Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Ernest. She is survived by her sons Elliott (Donna) and Lorne (Suzanne); grandchildren Donald, Michael, Jake and Aaron. She was the dear sister of Stan, Frank and Faye. Though Dorothy was born in New York City, she spent the greater part of her early life in Cook's Harbour, Newfoundland. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 at 2 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to service from 1- 2 p.m. at the Comstock Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, Ontario, 705 745-4683. Later this summer she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved Ernest amidst the partridgeberries and bakeapples. Passed away peacefully at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 30th of January 2015, Mrs. Blanche Effie Burt of St. Anthony in her 93rd year. Blanche leaves to mourn her loss, her daughter Marilyn; grandchildren Christopher and Heidi; special nephew/niece Roland and Effie; special niece/ husband Gloria and Doug; special nephew/ wife Vince and Jessie; brother-in-law Cecil Burt; special friends Evelyn Walker and Vera Colbourne. CANNING, Irene Druscilla

Passed away peacefully at the John M. Gray Centre in St. Anthony on the 26th of January 2015 in her 95th year, Mrs. Irene Druscilla (Reid) Canning of Roddickton. Irene is survived by her children George (Millicent), Stafford (Madelyn), Peggy (Guy), and Gary (Karen), and stepson Ches Gill (Juila). She also leaves to mourn 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and her sister Annie. Irene was predeceased by her husband Ambrose, parents William and Caroline, brother Bart, sister Rosie and granddaughter Sherry Lynn Canning. "She is not Forgotten, Simply gone with her Lord; where there is no pain, it's always morning and the roses never fade". Visitation took place at the funeral home in Roddickton, after which the funeral service held at the United Church in Roddickton at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31 with Rev. CHAMBERS, Leslie

Passed away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 17th day of January, 2015, Mr. Leslie Chambers of Bear Cove, in his 85th year. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 55 years Hilda Chambers; two sons and four daughters, Terrence (Lucy), Regina (Larry), Jane (Louis), Trudy (Lynden), Anne (Garfield), and Troy (Trudy); grandchildren Neil, Jody, Mark, Chad, Ryan, Jilda (Abbie), Gina (Jeremy), Zane, Hope, Daniel and Tristan; great-grandchildren Mila, Logan, Georgia and Joelle; brother Henry (Barbara); sisters Jessie, Mary Ann and Christina. He was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Jane Chambers. Visitation was held at the Anglican Church in Bear Cove from where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19 with Rev. FOWLER, William David
Born: March 17th, 1920
Passed on: January 18th, 2015

Passed peacefully away on Jan. 18, 2015, William David Fowler (March 17, 1920 - Jan. 18, 2015) of Capstan Island at the age of 94 years, 10 months. Heaven has gained another angel today. He was predeceased by his wife Stella, son Thomas, daughter Elsie, grandson Dean and brothers Joseph, Robert and sister Annie. Leaving with fond and beautiful memories daughter-in-law Bella; sons Joseph (Myra), George (Stella), Walter (Alice) and daughters Sophia (Kevin), Elizabeth (David), Bertha (George), and Janet (Bruce); son-in-law Obediah; sister Bertha; sister-in-law Beulah; 34 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and a large circle of nephews, nieces and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Labrador Straits Long Term Care Facility for their care and kindness over the past five years and to the 2nd floor nursing staff of Curtis Memorial Hospital for their special treatment during his short stay. The way he lived his life is what we and others aspire to: genuine, kind and humble. He lived with a strong sense of purpose and strength of conviction. His engaging personality touched the lives of everyone he met. The love he had for his family impacted the lives of his children from the oldest to the youngest great-grandchild. He started fishing at a very young age and grew up when times were very hard. But he provided very well for his family. Throughout his live he worked hard and enjoyed a good game of cards/dice with equal enthusiasm. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a charity of one's choice.

GIBBONS, Caroline

Passed away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 10th of January, 2015 Mrs. Caroline Gibbons Sr. of Pond Cove in her 90th year. Caroline was born in Pond Cove on Nov. 14, 1924 to Walter and Amelia Coombs of Current Island, NL. She married Guy Gibbons on May 15th of 1946. Together they had four children. Caroline was a loving, caring and kind-hearted woman who loved her family dearly. She loved to knit, cook and feed everyone who visited her home. Always room for more in her home, she loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all her heart and treated them like gold. Left to mourn are her sons Walter (Caroline), and John (Nancy Ann); daughter Ruby Sr. (Philemon); grandchildren Amelia (Scott), Virginia (Paul), Ruby (Darrol), and Guy (Kylie); great-grandchildren Hope, Belle, Jacey as well as a large circle of other family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Guy, daughter Virginia, great-grandson PG, mother Amelia, and father Walter. Visitation was held at St. Mary's Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove from where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14 January with Rev. Marlene Harvey officiating. HILLIER, Zilda Ihola

Passed away unexpectedly at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's on Jan. 21, 2015, Mrs. Zilda Hillier of St. Anthony in her 82nd year. Leaving to mourn son Rene (Doreen); daughter Lee; grandchildren Kyrie and Sean; sisters Eva Lawrence and Gloria Marshall (Rick Adams); sisters-in-law Emily Sulley and Blanche Coates; many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by husband Herbert, parents Gertrude and Ambrose Sulley, and brothers Robert and Russell Sulley. Her zest for life and her kindness will be remembered. LARKIN, Ulet

Passed away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 10th day of January, 2015, Mr. Ulet Larkin of Cook's Harbour in his 81st year. Left to mourn with lots of wonderful, fun filled memories are his one sister, Christena (Melvin) Decker; three brothers Alf (Maude), Tom (Myrtle) and Fred, plus a large circle of nephews, nieces and friends. Ulet was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Jenetta Larkin, brothers Erastus, Archibald, Alex and Angus, sisters Lillian, Jane and Emily. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony, after which the funeral service was held at St. Mary's Anglican Church in St. Anthony at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13 followed by burial in the Cook's Harbour Anglican Cemetery. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children Violet (Garry), Walter (Linda), and Gorden; grandchildren Vanessa, Jonathon, Jordan (Jessica), Sheila, and Wilson; great-grandchildren Gabriel and Jada; sister Rosie; brother Elam (Margarite); brother-in-law Warrick; special friends Gerald Elliott, Wayne Pittman, and Alex Smith as well as a large circle of other family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Susie, sister Hazel, brother-in-law John, parents Albert Edward Penney and Elizabeth Stevens. Visitation was held at St. Matthews Anglican Church in Cook's Harbour from where the funeral service took place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 with Rev. Fr. Paul Findlay officiating. PILGRIM, Chesley Clifford
Born: December 12th, 1957
Passed on: January 5th, 2015

Passed peacefully away surrounded by his loving family at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital, St. Anthony on the 5th day of January 2015, Mr. Chesley Clifford Pilgrim of St. Anthony (Dec. 12, 1957 - Jan. 5, 2015) in his 82nd year. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife of 57 years, Vera; his four children Mona (Bill), Linda (Scott), Nelson (Brenda), and Cheryl (Wayne); nine grandchildren Shelly, Victoria, Kerry, Brandon, Nikiata, Mark, Lori, Steven, and Mackenzie; nine great-grandchildren; sister Mae (Ed); sisters-in-law Lillian, Mabel (George), and Betty (Calvin); many nieces, nephews, as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Edna and Cecil Pilgrim and his brother Douglas. Visitation was held at the funeral home followed by the funeral service which took place at 2 p.m. on Friday, the 9th day of January at the United Church in St. Anthony with Reverend Dinesh Gomes officiating. Cremation followed the service, with interment to take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. PITTMAN, Hilda Mary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Hilda Mary Pittman of Plum Point announces her sudden passing at Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on Tuesday, January 6, 2014 at the age of 70 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories five daughters Helen (Earl), Patricia (Dennis), Alice (Glen), Elaine (Sherman), and Donna (Howard); son Rock (Marie); sister Emma Hughes; brothers Edmund (Geraldine), and Adrian (Marina); grandchildren Debrah, Bobby, Jonathan, Felicia, Wendy, Kaitlyn, Gregory, Mackenzie, Robyn, Adam and Darris; great-grandchildren Isabella and Emily; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives. She will be forever missed by her special friend and sister-in-law Helena Pittman and her friend Isabella Kennedy. We express great gratitude to nurse Margie and Jackie Noseworthy in Flowers Cove and to nurses Paula, Jennifer, Kristen and Dr. Jamal of St. Anthony. The family accepted friends at our Lady of Grace Church in Bird Cove on Thursday and a family service was held on Thursday evening. The funeral service took place on Friday, January 9 at 1:00 p.m. and interment followed at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Bird Cove with Father Raj officiating. PYE, Laurence William

It is with great sadness that the family of Laurence William Pye announces his sudden passing on January 5, 2015 at his home in Lodge Bay at the age of 77 years. Leaving to mourn his wife of 49 years, Meda; his daughters Andrea (Neal) and Evelyn (David); grandchildren Jordin, Donovan, Hope and Bradin; sister Flora, and a circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents William and Ina, sister Phyllis and brother Edward. Visitation took place at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Lodge Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday from where the funeral service was held on Thursday, January 8 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Norman Cutler officiating. Interment followed at the Anglican Cemetery

RUMBOLT, Alfred Joseph
Passed on: January 24th, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Alfred Joseph Rumbolt of Port au Choix (1945-2015), announces his passing on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Rufus Guinchard Health Centre, Port Saunders at the age of 69 years. He leaves to mourn his wife Paulette; daughter Julie and grandchildren Adam and Laila. Also left to mourn are six sisters and three brothers, a large extended family and a large circle of friends. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Juliette Rumbolt, three sisters and one brother. Visitation was held at Fillatre's Funeral Home, Port au Choix on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service followed on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Port au Choix. Interment followed at the Interfaith Cemetery, Sandy Cove. As expressions of sympathy, flowers were graciously accepted. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home, Port au Choix. SIMMS, Florence

Passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Centre in St. Anthony on the 28th day of December 2014. Mrs. Florence Simms of St. Anthony in her 84th year. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children Iris (Mike) Ryan, Darlene (David) Williams, Bella (Guy) Krepps, Josalyn Simms-Elliott, Leroy (Laurie) Simms, Melvin Simms, David Simms, Paul (Sherry) Simms, Paula (Rex) Simmonds, Carolann (Paul) DraJem, and Donna (Lynn) Simms St. Onge; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Stewart (Flora) Letto; sister Myrtle Jones as well as a large circle of other family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Simms, father Peter Letto, mother Martha Letto, brothers Hedley, Ellis, Manuel Letto, and sister Dorothy Letto. Visitation was held at the funeral home is St. Anthony from where the funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, the 2nd day of January 2015 with Rev. Fr. Paul Findlay officiating. Interment followed in the St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

SIMMS, Joan Bertha Caroline
Born: January 29th, 1935
Passed on: January 3rd, 2015

Joan was born in St. Anthony on Jan. 29, 1935 to Stella and Sidney Pilgrim of St. Anthony Bight. She married Reginald Simms on May 11, 1955. Together they had two sons, David and Maurice. She retired in December 1996 after working with the International Grenfell Association and Grenfell Regional Health Services for 23 years. Joan was a generous and kind-hearted woman who loved her family. She loved to knit, crochet, pick berries, bake and cook. There was always room for one more at the dinner table. Joan Bertha Caroline Simms (nee Pilgrim) of St. Anthony Bight passed away into peace on the third of January 2015. Left to mourn are sons David (Cynthia) and Maurice (Beverly); grandchildren Jason (Catherine), Heather, Shayna, Paul and Ryan; great-grandchildren Joshua, Zachary, Maxx, Charlie (Jason - Charlie's dad), Dylan, Lucas and Thomas; sisters Jean and Cavell; brother Wayne (Bernette), as well as a large circle of other family and friends. She was predeceased by her father Sidney (1988), her mother Stella (1995) and her husband of 59 years, Reg (2014). Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony, after which the funeral service was held at the St. Mary's Anglican Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Fr. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial followed the service in the St. Anthony Anglican Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard funeral director.
