COATES, Thomas
Born: June 25th, 1931
Passed on: August 10th, 2014
Thomas Coates
was born in Eddies Cove East on June 25, 1931. He moved to L'Anse au Clair and there is where he married his wife Agnes. Thomas Coates passed away on Aug. 10, 2014. He leaves to mourn a large circle of nieces, nephews, and other family as well as a large circle of friends. He was predeceased by his wife Agnes, his parents Philip and Susanna, sisters Amy, Rita, Bessie, and Alice, brothers William, John, Edgar, Philip, Richard, and Reginald. Visitation was held at the St. Andrew's Anglican Church in L'Anse au Clair from where the funeral service took place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug.13, 2014 with Rev. Norman Cutler officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

CULL, Greta Olive
Passed on: August 28th, 2014

Passed away into peace at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on Aug. 28, 2014, Mrs. Greta Olive Cull of St. Anthony in her 66th year. Left behind to mourn her passing are her loving husband of 39 years Ernest; her daughter Kristin (Richard), and her grandson Ethan. She is also survived by her siblings Chester (Elsie), Marjorie (Eric), Keith (Joan), and Christina (Ian); her brothers-in-law Albert (Jo), Gus (Cora), Gary (Irene), Benson (Daphne), and Roy (Joyce); sister-in-law Dorothy (Dennis), as well as many more relatives and friends. Visitation took place at Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony, after which the funeral service was held at United Church in St. Anthony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31 with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. Burial followed the service at the Fishing Point United Cemetery in St. Anthony. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

DREDGE, Mary Grace
Passed on: August 3rd, 2014

It is with heavy hearts the family of the late Mrs. Grace Mary Dredge of Black Duck Cove announces her passing at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on Aug. 3, 2014, Mrs. Grace Dredge in her 51st year. She will always be remembered and loved by her beloved husband Clifford Sr.; son Clifford Jr. (Amanda); daughter Laura (Chuck); granddaughters Shelby, Halle, and Bella; grandsons Cody, and C.J; brother Kenneth (Daphne); sisters Laura (Don), Dawn (Sammie), Michelle and Ivy (Dave); sisters- in-law Mona (Gerald), and Marjorie (William); brother-in-law Stephen as well as a large circle of other family and friends. She was predeceased by her father Donald, mother Debbie, mother-in-law Rachel, father-in-law Absalom Sr., brothers George, and Albert, nephew Kenneth Spence Jr., and niece Shara Lynn Spence. Visitation took place at the St. Mary's Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove from where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7 with Rev. Harold Harvey officiating. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.

FARWELL, Theodore Charles
Born: October 7th, 1930
Passed on: August 17th, 2014

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Theodore Charles Farwell of Port au Choix (Oct. 7, 1930 - Aug. 17, 2014), announces his passing at the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014 at the age of 83 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his sister Millicent Billard, Port au Choix; brother Roland (Nina), Corner Brook; sisters-in-law Rita Farwell, Port au Choix, Sadie Farwell, Norris Point and Ivy Farwell, Gander; nieces and nephews Bonnie (Gary) Hayward, St. John's, Percy (Andrea) Farwell, Gander, Sharon (Rick) Pennell, Stephenville, Brian (Julie) Farwell, Fort St. John, British Columbia, Delisa Farwell (Paul), Portugal Cove, Darren (Pauline) Farwell, Napean, Ontario, Rhoda Butt, Corner Brook and Gloria (Calvin) Perry, Hawkes Bay; long time employee and special friend Cynthia Eastman, Port au Choix. He was predeceased by his parents Wilbert and Matilda, brothers Gordon, Percy, Maxwell, Jack, Melvin and Clayton, brother-in-law Romeo Billard and sister-in-law Catherine Farwell. Visitation took place at Fillatre's Funeral Home, Port au Choix on Monday and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the Roman Catholic Church in Port au Choix with Bishop Leonard Whitten and Rev. Paulette Bugden officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Thomas Beckett Anglican Church Memorial Fund in Port au Choix or to a charity of one's Choice. GARDINER, Patrick Joseph
Born: November 4th, 1919
Passed on: August 9th, 2014

It is with heavy hearts the family of the late Patrick Joseph Gardiner (Paddy) of Conche, Nov. 4, 1919 - Aug. 9, 2014, announce his peaceful passing on the 9th day of August at the St. Luke's Nursing Home in St. John's. Mr. Patrick Gardiner was in his 94th year. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his sons Martin (Patsy), Bernie (Paula), and Pat (Paula); daughters Madeline, Eileen (Troy), and Maureen (Gale); grandchildren Robert, Stephen, Sheldon, Darren, Dwayne, Jenny, Jacinta, Bernard, Brady, Alexis, Andre, Michael, Cody, Megan, Candace, and Matthew; great-grandchildren Brandon, Alex, Carter and Theo; brother Ronald (Lucy); sisters Susie (Pad), Agatha, and Sister Zita; special friends Gertie Carroll, Lucy Gardiner, Nell Byrne, and Marie Byrne, as well as a large circle of other family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Tobin), his father Bernard, mother Mariah, brothers Jack, Frank, Gerald, Cecil and sister Bridget. Visitation was held at the Scared Heart Parish in Conche from where the funeral mass was held a t 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12 with Fr. Vitus Echedo officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

HANOCK, DJ Dean Maxwell Jr.

"DJ" Dean Maxwell Jr. Hancock
received his wings to play with heaven's angels early Friday morning, Aug. 22, 2014. Beloved son of Kim (McInnes) and Dean Hancock; much loved brother of Jaymie-Lyne Hancock; precious grandson to Jackie Lagace (Potvin/McInnes) and Ron Deslauriers, and Shirley (Randall) and Guy Hancock, and predeceased by James (Jim) McInnes and Stanley (Sonny) Lagace. Special nephew to Lyne (McInnes) and Dan Ryskie, Barry (Laurie) Hancock, Diane Hancock, Junior and Carol (Randall) Hancock, Ervin (Linda) Hancock, Percy (Joanne) Hancock; special cousin to Justin Prevost (Cheryl Beaudry) and their son Regan Prevost, Crystal (Justin) Stewart and their children Liam and Kayleigh, Natalie (Adam) Gleba, Joshua Hancock, and Deanna Hancock, and special friend to Gillian Townend of Sudbury. DJ was a wonderful person who had many varied interests including snowmobiling, seadooing, playing hockey, being with the boys, going to the gym, spending time with his girlfriend, and most of all, lighting up the lives of his family. He will forever be missed and always be loved. Funeral visitation was held at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch St., Sudbury. The funeral service took place at Glad Tidings Church, 1101 Regent St. Sudbury on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. Cremation with interment in the family plot at the Civic Memorial Cemetery. MacARTHUR, Desmond
Born: September 16th, 1949
Passed on: August 14th, 2014

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Desmond MacArthur (Sept.16, 1949 - Aug. 14, 2014), of Port au Choix on Thursday, Aug.14 at the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders. Desmond was born in the Codroy Valley, the son of Margaret and Frank MacArthur. He will be lovingly remembered and never forgotten by wife Sybil; children Desmond (Kim), Jason (Leann), Janet (Dennis) Pittman, David (Donna), and Dinah (William); 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; mother-in-law Aurelia McLean; sisters Helena (Greg) O'Quinn, Lydwine, and Carina (Dan) Hynes; brothers Brendan (Lydwena), Allan (Joan), and Blaine as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who all loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Quentin, father-in-law Raymond MacLean, sisters-in-law-Augustine Macey and Sarah Gibbons. Funeral services were held at Holy Family Parish on Monday, Aug. 18 with interment at Sandy Cove Interfaith Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home.

McCARTHY, Joan Mary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Joan Mary McCarthy (nee Beaudion) of Reef's Harbour, announces her sudden passing at home on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 at the age of 56 years. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband Andre and her two precious daughters Sarah (Cyril), St. John's and Andrea, Reef's Harbour; her mother Agnes Beaudion, Reef's Harbour; her brothers Jerome (Krista), St. John's, Paul (Frances), Prince Edward Island, Frances (Sharon), St. John's and Perry (Bernice), Grand Prairie, Alberta; mother-in-law Una (Ed); brothers-in-law Brian (Vivian), Corner Brook and Rick (Tara), Deer Lake; sisters-in-law Faustina (Keith) Easton, Corner Brook, Alta (Ron) Waldorf, Lloydminster, Alberta and Carol (Brian) Parsons, Corner Brook; many nieces, nephews and great-nephew who she loved and adored each and every one of them; as well as many aunts, uncles, other family and friends; her former students and fellow workers at the Viking Trail Academy where she worked as a teacher devoting her precious time for a number of years. She was predeceased by her father Jerome (1996) and father-in-law Ralph (1995). Family and friends visited St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Reef's Harbour starting Saturday 7:00 p.m. from where the funeral service was held on Monday, Aug. 18 at 3:00 p.m. with interment at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, flowers were graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Daffodil Place. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home, Port au Choix. PAYNE, Russo Christopher
Born: November 8th, 1944
Passed on: August 4th, 2014

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Russo Christopher Payne (Nov. 8, 1944 - Aug. 4, 2014) of Rocky Harbour, announce his sudden passing on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at the age of 69 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Marie, nee Nicolle; his three sons Christopher (Theresa Hanton), Shawn (Sherry) and Kerry (Regina); his grandchildren Carla, Tara, Russo, Adam, Scott, Sara, and Ethan; his brothers Mike (Brenda), Joe (Marion), Elia, Walter (Joanne), Dwight, Elwood (Pam), and Howard (Karen). Also leaving to mourn a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, family and friends. Russo was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Annie Payne, and his brother Gary Payne, and his sister-in-law Jean. Russo was the owner of Harbour Seafood in Rocky Harbour, which he has operated for more than 30 years. Supporting the community giving to various organizations, he was known locally and internationally as a kind and generous, giving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was known for his strong bold personality, kind and soft heart, a pillar of the community and will be missed by his loving family and a multitude of friends. The family received family and friends at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Rocky Harbour on Wednesday and Thursday, from where also the funeral service was held on Friday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Canon Louise Richards officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery in Rocky Harbour. Passed away into peace, surrounded by his four children at the Health Sciences Centre on Aug. 27, 2014, Mr. Roland Peyton of St. Lunaire-Griquet in his 82nd year. Roland leaves to mourn his common-law wife Rowena Dredge; his children Darren (April Ward), Deann (Jeff Wyatt), Denise (Andy Labelle), and Dwayne (Tara Peyton); his grandchildren Hailee, Brady, Luke, and Taylor; great-grandchild Bentley and step-grandchildren Scott, Chelsey and Randy. In his time Roland lived to see the passing of his wife Mae, his parents William and Liza, sisters Ethel, Victoria, Jessie, Hazel, Marie and Netta and his brother John. Visitation took place at the Pentecostal Church in St. Lunaire-Griquet, from where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014 with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Burial followed the service in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.

ROBERTS, Vina
Passed on: August 15th, 2014

Passed away peacefully in her home at Ship Cove on the Aug. 15, 2014, Mrs. Vina Bessey Roberts of Ship Cove in her 74th year. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her sons Terry (Dorcas), Barry (Merle), and Wade (Angela); daughters Bernette (Cyril), Marion (Gary), Lisa and Diane; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; brothers Garfield (Lilly), Melvin (Dorothy), and Hounsell (Gertie); sisters Violet (Roy), Martha, Jessie (Everett), Effie, Rebecca, Lavinia (Al), and Verne (Jacque), along with a large circle of other family and friends. Vina was predeceased by her husband Bernard, her daughters Beverly and Phoebie and her parents James and Phoebie Bessey. Visitation took place on Wednesday at the United Church in Ship Cove from where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21 with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

SIMMS, Robert (Bob) A.
Passed on: August 31st, 2014

Passed away the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's on Aug. 31, 2014, Mr. Robert (Bob) A. Simms of St. Anthony in his 68th year. Bob leaves behind with hearts full of loving memories his wife of 46 years, Carol; his daughters Deanna (Jim), and Gena; grandchildren Aymon and Devon; brothers Eric (Doris) and Roger (Nina); nephews Dwayne (Nadine), Darrell, and Sean (Brianna); niece Beverly (Matthew), and special aunt Joan. Bob lived to see the passing of his parents Marjorie and George, his very special uncle Reg and his in-laws Cecil and Annie. Visitation took place at Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony, after which the funeral service was held at St. Mary's Anglican Church in St. Anthony at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 with Rev. Fr. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.
