Anyone who knew Gerry couldn't help but admire his love of music, hunting and fishing. As an avid hockey player, he was very proud of his career playing with the Corner Brook Royals in the 50's and 60's where he earned the nickname "The Rocket" due to a similar playing style as NHL great Maurice Richard and scoring a goal against another NHL great Terry Sawchuk. After retiring from All-Nfld. hockey he led numerous Lewisporte senior hockey teams as a player/coach to numerous great seasons. He capped his hockey career being able to play on the same team as his son, Jerry. One of his most memorable highlights in later years and during the onset of his battle with Alzheimer's was when he was able to coach young players in the local minor hockey association in Lewisporte.
Gerry was employed with CN Railway as a station agent at Notre Dame Junction until his retirement in March of 1984, with 35 years of service and later as a guard with the RCMP. He will be deeply missed by his family, and friends who lovingly called him, Pop Dwyer.
