On the morning of Oct. 20 [this date looks strange for the date of the newspaper - I (Tom Hynes) may have made a transcription error here], a wedding was celebrated at Corpus Christi Church, Kilbride, when Jean and Thomas Rogers were united in holy matrimony. Between the marriage and nuptial mass which followed, Rev. Father P. E. Miller, O. M. T., uncle of the bride read the Papal Blessing which had arrived a few days before from Rome. Mrs. Rogers is the former Jean Kelly, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Kelly, Topsail Road. Mr. Rogers is the son of Mary Ellen and the late James Rogers, Southside Road. This was Canon William Lockyer, the Anglican clergyman in Trinity, who wrote a number of historical and current pieces for the newspaper of the day. Upon reference to the old Marriage Register, however, I find that between the years 1769 and 1803 the majority of the men then married were from Somersetshire, as follows: -

Mr. and Mrs. James Bryant Ryan following their wedding June 5 at St. Patrick's Church. The Reverend Father K. Angel officiated. The bride is the former Rosemary Brennan, daughter of Mrs. G. K. Healey and the late William P. Brennan. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan, Corner Brook. Given in marriage by her brother James, the bride was attended by Joan Brennan and Eleanor McNamara. William Madore was best man, assisted by ushers Patrick Hurley and Joseph Buckingham. The reception was held at Bidgood's. The couple are now living in Corner Brook.
