PENNEY, Herbert
The Evening Telegram     March 25, 1925 (Wednesday)
Herbert Penney
, North Arm, Holyrood. The hearts of the people of North Arm were saddened to hear of the early death of young Herbert Penney, and a big wave of sympathy was felt for the broken hearted parents. Herbert was in his 16th year, and the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Penney. A bright pupil of the North Arm School, much liked by his teachers (Miss Flynn, firstly, and Miss Moore recently), he was fond of school and books, and had little difficulty in passing the Preliminary Exam, C. H. E., 1923. Young Herbert was not in regular attendance at school the past year, for his father was one of the architects engaged at the Quebec big bridge construction work, and the boy was kept at home to help fill his place. Sometime after Christmas he had an attack of Scarlet Fever from which he rallied, but later on he was attacked by a strange and insidious disease. Father Finn was called to the sick boy to administer to him the rites of Holy Church, and was constant in attention to comfort him in his sufferings. Dr. Giovanetti was called, but the disease had made such ravages on the boy's system unable to respond to the treatment he was pronounced incurable.
He died on March 10th, and the news of his untimely death came as a shock to his brother members of the Star of the Sea Association, who at the annual meeting less than two months ago had elected him a member of the Amusement Committee. At 8 o'clock in the morning of March 12th, the members of the Association were convened at his home preparatory to attending his funeral in processional order, and to pay the last tribute of respect to his remains. Undertaker Dunphy had charge of the funeral arrangements. The funeral cortege, an unusually large one, proceeded from the boy's home, North Arm, to the church where Requiem Mass and the funeral service was chanted by Rev. Fr. Finn, P. P., and a large congregation assisted at the ceremonies. Those being ended the procession continued its way to the Central Cemetery, where the remains were interred in the first and only grave in the family plot.
Last St. Patrick's Day, Herbert enrolled himself as a junior member of the Star of the Sea Association; but alas, the Association this St. Patrick's Day, performed the sad duty of passing a vote of sympathy to the bereaved parents and voted his Death Benefit of $40.00. He will be missed from the Association, as a young and active member of the Amusement Committee. But how much more will he be missed from the home circle, where his loving parents were so often gladdened by his gleeful presence. We can well estimate their feelings on the loss of their cherished one, but they have the consoling thought though he fought bravely to push death aside, his death was holy and edifying. To his sorrowing parents we offer our sympathy. R. I. P.

PENNEY, Philip
The Evening Telegram    August 17, 1928 (Friday)

In Memoriam. There passed away on Friday, August 3rd, at the early age of 48 years, Philip Penney, Holyrood, beloved husband of Margaret Penney, and son of William and Mary Penney. Our deceased friend was born in St. John's; but his early life and manhood years were lived at North Arm, Holyrood, where he worked with his father who was a planter and commanded a schooner at the Shore and Labrador fisheries. Being of a mechanical turn of mind he emigrated to Duluth, U.S.A. where he found a field for his genius and worked on large construction works as mechanical engineer. Later we find him at Quebec engaged in the construction work of big modern bridges. While employed here his health failed and the doctor in charge diagnosed his case, and ordered him to quit work and go home to rest. He returned home in March, and some time after consulted Dr. O'Kelly, Avondale and Dr. N.S. Fraser, St. John's. Both found his case hopeless as Bright's Disease had developed to such an extent that it was impossible to arrest its progress. He was visited by his beloved friend and pastor, Fr. Finn, who administered to him the last sacraments.
The funeral was held on Sunday evening, August 5th, from the family residence to the Church of Holy Cross, where Rev. W.P. Finn, the pastor, officiated at the funeral ceremony, and proceeded to the Central Cemetery where the remains were tenderly and reverently laid in the family plot by Undertaker Dunphy who had charge of the funeral arrangements. The funeral cortege was exceptionally large; the people from the nearby settlements turning out in large numbers to show their respect for the deceased and sympathy for the relatives of a fine handsome and stately man whose life and career death had closed so prematurely. He leaves to mourn his loss, his sorrowing wife, two sons, William and Michael; and five daughters, Bertha, Kathleen, Ellen, Madeline, and Angela, and his aged mother and father to all of whom widespread sympathy goes forth. God rest his soul. - Amen.

In Memoriam.

Thomas Penny, an old and respected inhabitant of North Arm, Holyrood died there last week. Deceased was in his seventy-sixth year, was stricken down with sickness all the winter, and was well fortified with the rites of Holy Church when he received the death summons on Thursday last. In his Younger days, Mr. Penny was a successful planter at the Labrador fishery and for many years operated a room at Brig Harbour. He had a skilled knowledge of the coast and was sometimes employed as a pilot there. Since 1898 he filled the position of ferryman on North Arm, satisfactorily, always ready and willing to serve a passenger. He was one of the oldest members of the Star of the Sea Association, which repaired to the home of their deceased Brother member and took part in processional order at his funeral obsequies. His funeral took place on Saturday morning from his late home to the Church Of the Holy Cross where High Mass of Requiem was sung by Rev. W.P. Finn, P.P. for the eternal repose of his soul, thence to the Central Cemetery where His remains were placed beside those of his good wife who predeceased him but a year. The funeral was a large one and was in charge of Undertaker Dunphy and Marshal Penny. To the sorrowing sons and daughters we tender our deepest sympathy. Requiscat in pace. - Com.
