13 January 1864 Married. At Carbonear on Wednesday evening last, the 6th instant, by the Rev. John O'Connor, at the residence of the mother of the bride, Mr. Michael Ryan, to Mary, youngest daughter of the late William Hanrahan, Esq., M.D.
  Married. In Brooklyn, New York, Dec. 31, by the Rev. Mr. Remington, at the residence of Mr. Jon. R. Lilly, the bride's uncle, Mr. Thomas Dean to Miss Sarah C. Lilly, late of St. John's, Newfoundland.
  Died. At Carbonear, on Wednesday, the 30th ultimo., William W. Bemister, Esq., a native of Corfe Mullen, Dorsetshire, England, aged 74 years, over 60 of which were spent in this Island, principally in Carbonear. Mr. Bemister was for more than forty years engaged in mercantile business, and always regarded as a man of honor and integrity, of unassuming manners, sincere friendship, and no man's enemy.
27 January 1864 Died. On Monday evening 18th inst., after a protracted illness, borne with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Bridget, the beloved wife of Mr. Maurice Doyle, a native of Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland, aged 63 years.
  Died. At St. John's, on Wednesday evening last Mr. Nicholals (sic) Gill Harris, aged 64 years.
10 February 1864

Married. On the 2nd inst., by the Rev. B. Jones, Mr. Robert Ash, to Mrs. E. Titford.

17 February 1864

Birth. On Monday evening, the 16th inst., the wife of Lewis W. Emerson, Esq. of a daughter.

  Married. On Thursday, the 4th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Dove, Mr. Wm. Parsons, to Triphenia, daughter of Mr. Edmund Whiteway.
24 February 1864

Birth. On Monday last, the wife of Capt. D. Green, of a daughter.

  Married. At Boston, on the 11th January, at St. Stephen's Church, by the Rev. E. M. P. Wells, Mr. Phillip T. Knight, Printer, to Miss Mary Ann Reardon, both of St. John's.
  Died. At Island Cove, on Monday last, after a lingering illness, Mr. James Crane, son of Mr. John Crane, aged 23 years.
  Died. At Spaniard's Bay, on Sunday night last, Mr. Richard Callahan, aged 75 years, an old and respected inhabitant of that place.
  Died. At Bonavista, on the 21st January last, of Diphtheria, much and deservedly regretted by a large circle of relatives and friends, Charlotte and on the 23rd, Agnes, the beloved daughters of Mr. Joseph Shears.
02 March 1864

With regret we announce the death, at Bermuda, of Commander Lewis Maurice Croke, of H.M.S. "Vesuvius." The deceased was First Lieutenant of the above named vessel, and was known and highly respected by a large number of persons in this town.

09 March 1864

Died. At Bonavista, about the last of February, of Diptheria (sic), Elizabeth, the beloved daughter of Mr. Joseph Shears, aged 23 years. The deceased was the third daughter off within the month. We deeply sympathize with the sorrowing parents.

  Died. At the same place of appoplexy (sic), on the 21st ult., W. Sweetland, Esq., Stipendiary Magistrate.
30 March 1864

Died. On Sunday morning last, after a very short illness, WILLIAM DONNELLY, Esq., merchant, of this place, aged 64 years. Mr. DONNELLY was a native of this country, where he resided throughout, first doing business in Spaniard's Bay, and subsequently for the past fifteen years in this town. His career was one of strict integrity, and he leaves a handsome fortune the result of a life of steady toil and frugality. His loss will be widely known who were the objects of his unostentatious and extensive charities amongst the poor of this vicinity, while all classes feel that the death of this worthy man leaves a marked gap in society that cannot be filled at least in the days of his contemporaries. His funeral will take place to-day, about one o'clock from the Catholic Cathedral.

Notice is hereby given that the Trade of the late WILLIAM DONNELLY, of Harbour Grace, Merchant, will be conducted there by his son, Mr. WILLIAM J. S. DONNELLY, to whom all debts due the Estate are to be paid, and by whom will be adjusted Demands on the Estate.

Died. At St. John's on Tuesday last, after a lingering illness, James G, second son of Mr. Robert Matthew, aged 23 years.

13 April 1864

Died. At Bay Roberts, on Sunday the 10th inst., aft a lingering illness, Frederick Carter, son of Stephen Olive Pack, Esq., aged 11 years.

20 April 1864

Died. On Friday last, after a lingering illness, Margaret, the beloved wife of Mr. William Wilson, and eldest daughter of Mr. Philip Walsh, aged 33 years.

  Died. On Saturday last, after a short illness, Mary Joseph, only daughter of the late Mr. Edward Glavine, aged 3 years.
27 April 1864

Died. On Friday evening last, after a lingering illness, which he bore with truly Christian resignation to the Divine Will, Mr. Thomas G. Green, aged 22 years. His funeral took place yesterday from the residence of his grandmother, and was numerously and most respectfully attended.

11 May 1864

Married. At Bears Cove, on the 6th ult., by the Rev. Alexander Rose, Mr. Thomas Henderson, late of Dumfries, Scotland, to Ann Eliza, youngest daughter of the late Mr. William Gordon of this place.

  Died. On the 5th inst., after a short illness, Julia, the beloved wife of Mr. Martin Kelly, aged 65 years.
  Died. At Carbonear, on the 5th inst., deeply regretted by all who knew her, Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Mr. Pierce Phelan, aged 86 years.
  Died. At St. John's, on Monday morning, May 2, after a short and painful illness, Mr. Richard Cook, aged 44 years.
18 May 1864

Birth. At Harbor Grace on 17th inst., Mrs. Robert S. Munn of a son.

  Died. On Saturday evening, the 7th inst., at the Wesleyan Parsonage, Brigus, Sarah, the beloved wife of the Rev. Thomas Harris, aged 35.
  Died. At St. John's, on Saturday morning after a long and painful illness, in the 63rd year of his age, Mr. Peter Aspwell, a native of the county Wexford, Ireland.
25 May 1864

Died. At St. John's, on Sunday morning, at half-past 3 o'clock, Alice Dalton, relict of the late John Elson, Esq., Merchant, of Carbonear, aged 72 years.

08 June 1864

Died. At St. John's, on Thursday the 2nd inst., after a protractive illness which she bore with Christian fortitude and resignation to the Divine Will, Catherine, the beloved wife of Dr. J. J. Dearin and sister of John Fennell, Esq., Clerk of Peace of this place, aged 44 years.

22 June 1864

Died. On Tuesday the 14th inst., after a long illness, Mr. William Howlett, a native of County Wexford, Ireland, and for many years a respected inhabitant of this place, aged 52 years.

  Died. On Wednesday, the 15th inst., Susana, relict of the late Mr. Jacob Moore, aged 77 years.
  Died. At Rattery, Devon, May 16, aged 65 years, after a long and painful illness, Jane, the beloved wife of Mr. John Maddock, of Rattery, and the affectionate mother of J. & R. Maddock of Carbonear.
29 June 2021

Died. On Wednesday, the 22nd inst., at Boulardrie, Cape Breton, after a long and painful illness, which he bore with patient resignation to the Divine Will, Philip McRae, aged 27 years. The deceased was for many years book keeper with Messrs. Rutherford, Brothers, here, and was highly esteemed by them, as well as by all who knew him.

06 July 1864

Died. At Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on the 1st July, while on a visit to her relatives, Hannah Margaret, the beloved wife of the Rev. J. Winterbotham, Wesleyan Minister of Carbonear.

07 September 1864

Died. On Sunday evening last after a long illness, Susan, the beloved wife of Mr. Stephen Peters of this town, aged 35 years. Her funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock when the friends of the family are respectfully requested to attend.

  Died. Also the same night, Mary Ann, infant daughter of the above named.
  Died. At St. John's, on Wednesday, 31st August, Mr. James Murray, a native of Perth , Scotland, aged 55 years.
21 September 1864

Married. At the Priory Church, Great Malvern, on the 1st inst., by the Rev. Geo Fisk, Vicar, Graham Kinloch, Esq., eldest son of the late Graham Kinloch, Esq., Alexandria, Dumbartonshire, to Isabella Fisher, eldest daughter of the Hon. John Munn, Newfoundland. - Glasgow Daily Herald, Sept. 3.

  Died. At Carbonear, the 16th inst., Alexander O'Donovan, Esq., aged 51 years, a native of the county Cork, Ireland, for the last 21 years principal of the Grammar School of Carbonear, and formerly Professor of Mathematics at Carlow College, leaving six orphan children to deplore his loss.
  Died. At Mosquito, on Friday last, after a short illness, Mr. Philip Meaney, aged 75 years, an old and respected inhabitant of that place for a number of years.
05 October 1864

Died. At Port-de-Grave, on the 19th ultimo, after a short illness, much and deservedly regretted, Mr. Henry Dawe, Sen., aged 63 years.

12 October 1864

Died. At Demerara of yellow fever, on the 26th August, Captain Robert Welsh, of St. John's, Nfld., in the 34 year of his age; also, on the 1st Sept., his brother, William Welsh, mate, aged 22 years, leaving a father and four sisters to mourn the loss of kind sons and affectionate brothers, and much regretted by a large circle of friends.

  Died. At Leithenhall, Wamphrey, Dumfriessire (sic), on the 19th August, Samuel Rogerson, Esq., aged 65 years.
  Died. At his residence, Burin, on the 1st inst., William Hooper, Esq., J.P., in the 77th year of his age. Deceased held the office of Stipendiary Magistrate at the above place for many years, which position he filled with credit to himself, and general satisfaction to all with whom he had to deal. His memory will long be cherished by those with whom he had social intercourse, and the poor will have just cause to mourn the loss of a sincere and charitable friend. We sincerely sympathise with his bereaved family and friends.
  Died. At Havana, of yellow fever, on the 7th September, Richard Cole Lay, a native to Teignmouth, Devon, aged 54 years and 4 mouths.

Married. On Thursday evening last, at the residence of the brides' (sic), by the Rev. John Walsh, Mr. Patrick Walsh, to Jane, only daughter of Mr. W. Burke, all of this town.

  Married. At Tilton Harbor, on the 15th ult., by the Rev. P. Ward, P.P., Mr. James B. Drysdale, of this place to Kate, youngest daughter of the late P. Mullowney of St. John's.
  Married. At the Cathedral Church, St. John's, on Wednesday last, by the Right Rev. Lord Bishop of Newfoundland, assisted by the Rev. Thomas M. Wood, Garrison Chaplain, Duncan Norton Taylor, Esq., R.A... son of Captain Taylor, R.N., of Maida Hill, London, to Harriet Liddell, only daughter of the Hon. Hugh W. Hoyles, Attorney General of Newfoundland.
  Married. At St. John's, on Wednesday last, at St. Mary's Church, South-side, by the Rev. Mr. Medley, A.W. Harvey, Esq., to Miss Elizabeth Walker.
  Died. At 30, Kirkgate, Leith, on the 24th of September Mr. George Wilson, late of H.M. Customs, and last surviving son of the late Henry Wilson, Esq., of Clough, Lanarkshire.
  Died. At Aquaforte, on Tuesday, 11th inst., Peter Winsor, Esq., Stipendiary Magistrate of the Ferryland District, and for many years previously its Representative in the Assembly, aged 83 years.
  Died. At Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on the 26th June last, Charles Nuttall Thorn, Esq., merchant, aged 49 years (formerly of Harbor Grace,) leaving a wife and ten children to mourn his irreparable loss.
02 November 1864

Died. At Bay Roberts, on Monday morning last, after a short illness, in the 38th year of his age, leaving a widow and six children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and parent, Captain William Bartlett.
The deceased was widely known and generally respected by a large number of persons for his hospitality and kindness, and will be mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends, and the poor will miss a friend who was at all times ready to relieve their distress. His funeral will take place to-morrow Thursday at 11 o'clock when the friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend.

  Died. On Saturday, last, after a short illness, in the 60th year of her age, leaving a large family to deplore her loss, Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Mr. Patrick Butler.
  Died. On the 29th September last, at Black Tickle, Labrador, Mr. Edward Scaplen, aged 49 years, much and deservedly regretted by all his friends.
16 November 1864

Birth. At her residence, Terra Nova Cottage, Gladstone Estate, Invercargill, New Zealand, on the 29th of July, Mrs. William Tait, of a daughter.

  Died. Yesterday morning, at St. John's, in the 28th year of his age, Mr. Horatio Reed, son of T. Reed, Esq., Sub-Collector at LaPoile.
23 November 1864

Married. On Thursday the 10th inst., at the house of the bride's father, by the Rev. John Winterbotham, the Rev. John Goodison, Wesleyan Minister, Catalina, to Elizabeth Ann, daughter of John Rorke, Esq., M.H.A., Carbonear.

  Married. At St. John's, on the 12th instant, by the Right Rev. Dr. Mullock, assisted by the Rev. J. Vareker, P.P. Mr. James Healy, Chief Clerk, General Post Office, to Mary, third daughter of the late Hon. James Furlong.
  Died. On Saturday last, of consumption, aged 33 years Ellen, relict of the late Mr. William Brydle, of Carbonear.
  Died. On Saturday last, after a long and painful illness, Mr. Michael Quinn, aged 43 years.
30 November 1864

Married. At Carbonear, on the 22nd inst., at the residence of the brides (sic) father, by the Rev. J. O'Connor, assisted by the Rev. J. Cominicus, John, youngest son of Arthur Thomey, of Esq., of Mosquito, to Elizabeth, the fifth daughter of Michael Gould, Esq.

  Died. At St. John's, on Saturday, the 26th inst., Judith, wife of Capt. Henry Herder, aged 66 years.
07 December 1864

Died. On Sunday last, Mr. Henry Roche, a native of County Wexford, Ireland. His remains will be taken to St. John's this day for interment.

  Died. At St. John's, on the 28th November, Cathrine (sic), the beloved wife of Stephen March, Esq., M.H.A., aged 53 years. Mrs. March, for many years, endured great bodily affliction, with exemplary patience and resignation to the will of her Heavenly Father. She was a woman of unassuming deportment, but firm friendship and kind disposition; an affectionate wife, and a beloved mother. Her unostentatious charity will not be soon forgotten. Her house, for many years, was open for the reception of the Ministers of that Church to which she was conscientiously attached, and of which she was a consistent member; many of whom will realize in her decease the loss of a kind and sympathizing friend. She has left a bereaved husband and family, and a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn her comparatively early removed from their midst; but their loss is her eternal gain.

Married. On Saturday evening last, at St. Paul's Church, by the Rev. B. Jones, Mr. Thomas P. Brooks, of Pugwash, N.S., to Mary Ann, youngest daughter of Mr. Thomas Godden.

  Died. On the 3rd inst., after a long illness, borne with Christain (sic) resignation to the Divine will, aged 73 years, Mr. Edward Peters, a native of Devonshire, England, and a resident of this place for upwards of 50 years.
21 December 1864

Died. At the Wesleyan Parsonage, Harbour Grace, on the 18th inst., Annie Eleanor Janetta, infant daughter of the Rev. James Dove.

28 December 1864

Died. On Monday evening last, after a short illness, Mr. Thomas Jenkins, aged about 38 years. His funeral will take place to-morrow Thursday at 2 o'clock.

  Died. On Wednesday the 7th inst., after a protracted illness, Richard Anderson, Esq., a native of Cavan, Ireland, aged 80 years, 60 of which he spent in this country.
  Died. At St. John's, on Monday last, Mrs. Elizabeth Radford, wife of the late Henry Radford, aged 88 years.
  Died. At the same place, on the 21st instant at 4 o'clock, after a short illness, aged 77 years, 57 of which he spent in Newfoundland, John O'Donnell, Esq., a native of Tipperary. Deceased was engaged for many years in the trade of this country, and had earned the respect of all who knew him by his probity and uprightness of character.
  Died. On Thursday, 22nd Dec., after a protracted and painful illness, borne with meek submission to the Divine Will, Catherine A. S., eldest daughter of Peter Weston Carter, Esq., Chief Police Magistrate, St. John's.
