14 January 1863

On Wednesday night last a soldier of the R. Canadian Rifles, named John Houlahan, shot himself through the head with his rifle whilst on sentry. He was not dead early yesterday afternoon, but was lingering in great agony.

 

Died. At his residence, St. George's House, Figueira, Portugal, on the 10th November last, in the fifty-first year of his age, John Richard Maguire Cooke, Esq., formerly of St. John's, Newfoundland, son of the late Capt. Robert Cooke, 28th Regiment.

 

Died. At St. John's on the morning of Wednesday, the 7th current, after a protracted illness, Jane Frances, the beloved daughter of the Hon. Patrick Kough.

  All persons having claims against the Estate of the late Patrick Foristall, planter, of Bareneed, deceased, are requested to present the same duly attested to G. W.R. Hierlihy, Esq., Notary Public, Bay Roberts, for settlement, Who is authorised to receive and give receipts for all debts due to said Estate.

21 January 1863 Died. On Thursday last, at Caplin Cove, after a lingering illness, aged 81 years, Mr. Jonathan Webber, an old and respected inhabitant.
  Died. At Scilly Cove, on the 24th Nov., of Diphtheria, after a severe illness, borne with Christian fortitude and resignation to the Divine will, Lucretia, second daughter of the late Mr. John Walker, schoolmaster, aged 14 years.
  Died. At the same place, on the 12th Dec., of the same disease, after a lingering illness, borne with Christian fortitude and resignation to the Divine will, Harriet, second daughter of Mr. James Kolland, aged 18 years.
28 January 1863

In the Police Court, yesterday, William Reed, Robert Green, and John Green, were brought on warrant before Joseph Peters, and L. W. Emerson, Esqrs., Justices of the Peace, and fined Five Pounds or six weeks imprisonment each, for malicious injury lately done by them to the house and property of Samuel Champion, of Scilly Cove, Trinity Bay.

  Married. At St. John's, on Tuesday the 20th day of January, at the Congregational Church, by the Rev. Charles Pedley, Thomas Raffles Job, Esq., only son of Thomas Job, Esq., of Liverpool, to Agnes Beater Brown, daughter of Robert Brown, Esq., Manager of the Commercial Bank of St. John's, Newfoundland.
  Married. At Harbour Buffett Placentia Bay, Jan. 20th, by the Rev. John Kingswell, Mr. Charles D. Chambers, merchant, late of Halifax, N.S., to Ann eldest daughter of Mr. Nelson Bailey, of Oderin.
 

Died. On Monday morning, the infant daughter of the Rev. Mr. Moss.

  Died. On Wednesday night last, at Spaniard's Bay, after a short illness, in the 83rd year of his age, Mr. Richard Gosse.
  Died. At St. John's on Monday morning, Sarah, aged 26 years, third daughter of Mr. M. M. Thorne, late of Harbour Grace, and beloved wife of Mr. Frederick Hass of this town.
  Died. At Dunse, Scotland, on the 22nd ult., in the 33rd year of his age, James Noble Neilson, master at St. Andrew's School, St. John's, Newfoundland.
  Died. At Liverpool, on the 19th Dec. inst, Rufus, Infant son of Mr. Robert Trapnell, late of this town.
  Died. At Great Placentia on the 7th instant, after a short illness, in the 83rd year of his age John Rielly a native of that place. Deceased was universally respected and will long be remembered in Placentia, where he leaves a numerous circle of relations and friends to mourn a tender father and a respected neighbor.
  Died. On Friday the 2nd instant, at Mosquito, St. Mary's Bay, after a lingering illness, John Doodle, aged 40 years. He was well respected by all who knew him, and leaves a widow with a large family to mourn their irreparable loss.
  Died. On Thursday evening last, after a lingering illness, Patrick Cane, a native of Kilmathomas, County Waterford.
11 February 1863

Married. At Guelph, Jan. 1st by the Rev. James Brock, Richard C. Newman, Esq., Chemist, to Emily, daughter of the late Alfred Mayne, Esq., Barrister-at-Law, &c., Harbor Grace, Newfoundland.

  Died. At Carbonear on the 5th inst., John S. Oshanesy, M.D., a native of Limerick, Ireland, aged 72 years, Graduate of Hartford College, Boston, also 3 years in the Dispensary at Halifax, N.S. His funeral took place on Sunday the 8th inst., and was attended by a very large number of persons from all denominations.
  Died. At St. John's, on Thursday, the 5th inst., Jessie Eliza, eldest daughter of Mr. E. Barnes, aged nine years and eight months.
18 February 1863

Died. At St. John's, on Tuesday night, the 10 inst., in her 80th year, Ann, relict of the late Mr. Thomas Duder.

  Died. At same place, on Sunday the 8th inst., after a lingering illness, borne with christian resignation to the Divine will, Mrs. Elizabeth Madden, widow of the late Mr. John Madden of Caplin Bay, in the 82nd year of her age.
25 February 1863

Died. On Thursday the 19th inst., after a short illness, in the 78th year of his age, Mr. Thomas Woolfrey, and old and respectable resident of this town.

  Died. On Tuesday, the 17th inst., Mr. James Giavein, an old and respectable inhabitant of this town. Aged 81 years.
18 March 1863

Died. On Sunday last after a lingering illness, Elizabeth, relict of the late Mr. Thomas Woolfrey aged 72 years. Her funeral will take place this afternoon, when the friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend.

  Died. At Spaniard's Bay, on Saturday last, of consumption, Julia Alma Jane, second daughter of Mr. Moses Gosse, in the 31st year of her age. And on Sunday last, of disease of the heart, Harriet Sophia, fourth daughter of Mr. Moses Gosse, in the 2(?)th year of her age. Their funerals will take place from the residence of their father this day (Wednesday.)
  Died. At St. John's on the 26th February last, sincerely regretted by a large number of acquaintances and friends, in the 80th year of her age, Annie, relict of the late Mr. John Radford.
25 March 1863

Married. On the 18th of December last, at St. Giles, Reading, by the Rev. J. Vesey Hamilton, father of the bridegroom, assisted by the Rev. T. V. Fosbery, vicar of the parish, Captain R. Vesey Hamilton, R. N., to Julia, second daughter of Vice-Admiral James Arthur Murray, and grand daughter of the late Lord William Murray.

Birth. On Wednesday morning last, Mrs. Robert Munn, of a son.

08 April 1863

Birth. On Wednesday morning, the wife of Mr. G. Makinson of a daughter.

  Died. At Black Head, on the first instant, after a severe illness, borne with Christian resignation, John Curtis, Esq., Coroner, &c., aged 69 years. Mr. C. had been for fifty years a faithful and zealous Local Preacher among the Wesleyan congregation, 22 of which has been in Black Head circuit. His loss is deeply regretted by his sorrowful family, and will be deeply felt by all who knew him more especially by the Churches where he labored.
  Died. At Bay Roberts, the infant child of Mr. Moors.
  Died. At St. John's, on the 27th ult, Eliza, the beloved wife of R. Howley, Esq., aged 56 years.
  Died. At same place, on 36th (sic) ult., Eliza, youngest daughter of Mr. R. Matthew, aged 8 years.
  Died. At same place on the 2nd inst., William Archibald, only son of Mr. W. Warren, aged 15 years.
  Died. At Hall's Bay, of brain fever, on the 24th February, W. R. Perchard, son of the late R. Perchard, Esq., aged 25 years.
29 April 1863

Died. At Toronto, on the 7th April, Nr. (sic) William Loveys, late of St. John's, age 85 years.

17 June 1863

Died. At St. John's, on the 9th inst., of Consumption, in the 14th year of her age, Mary, second daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Parker.

  Died. At the same place, on the 10th inst., after protracted illness, which she bore with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Capt. William Cole, aged 60 years.
24 June 1863

Married. On Monday evening last by the Rev. Mr. Brettle, Capt. James Brown, to Lavinia Parsons, of Bear's Cove.

  Died. At Spaniards Bay on Sunday last, in the 81st year of her age, Mary, relict of the late John Hutchings.
01 July 1863

Died. At Carbonear, on Sunday, the 28th inst., John Thompson, Esq., surgeon, in the 57th year of his age, deeply regretted by his bereaved family and a large circle of relations and friends, whose loss, both in public and private, will be long felt and deplored. The deceased has been a resident in Carbonear for 16 years, and he bore his long, painful illness, with christian resignation. His funeral will take place from his late residence, at 3 o'clock, this day, p.m., when his relatives and friends are invited to attend.

08 July 1863

Died. At Liverpool, England, on the 10th June last, aged 33 years, much and deservedly regretted, Mr. Edward V. Peters, son of Mr. Edward Peters, of this town.

15 July 1863

Died. At Carbonear, on the 6th inst., after a long illness, Mr. George Jones, an old and respected inhabitant, in the 81st year of his age.

22 July 1863

An Inquest was held by J. Peters, Esq., Coroner, on Monday, the 20th inst., in Upper Island Cove, at the house of Mr. James Drover, on view of the body of John Adams of that place, planter.
It appeared that the deceased had recently been the subject of violet pain in the head and spasms, and that during the paroxosms (sic) he was bereft of reason, and that on Saturday morning last, about 8 o'clock, during one of those attacks he strangled himself by fastening one end of a short piece of fishing-line to the bedpost and the other around his neck.
Verdict, suicide, during a temporary fit of insanity.

Died. Suddenly, on Sunday evening last, Mary, daughter of Mr. E. Whiteway, aged 23 years.

19 August 1863

Died. At Carbonear, on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 1 o'clock, A.M., Mr. Charles Penny, aged 68 years, an old and respectable inhabitant of that place.

  Died. At Boston, on Sunday morning, Aug. 2nd., George, son of John Rorke, Esq., Merchant, Carbonear, aged 25 years.
26 August 1863

Died. On Sunday evening last, after a lingering illness, Mr. Thomas White, aged 70 years. Deceased was a resident of Carbonear for a number of years.

  Died. On Saturday last, Elizabeth Jane, infant daughter of Mr. Frederick Heath, of this town.
09 September 1863

Died. On Sunday last, the 6th inst., Elizabeth Norman, the beloved infant daughter of Mr. George Makenson, aged 5 months.

  Died. At Brigus, on Wednesday morning, the 26th ult., Charles Cozens, Esq., Stipendiary Magistrate of that place, aged 79 years. The deceased was a native of Blanford, Dorset; and had resided in Brigus for over 61 years, where he long carried on an extensive business, and was distinguished for the energy of his character, his benevolence and hospitality.
  Birth. On the 19th ult., the wife of J. Hayward, Esq., H.M.S.G., of a daughter.
23 September 1863

Birth. On the 4th inst.,. the wife of G. C. Gaden, Esq., Sheriff, N.D., of a daughter.

  Marriage. On Tuesday, may 26, at the Wesleyan Church, Yamastreet, Geelong, by the Rev. W. L. Binks, Mr. George Pople, Farmer, of Connemara, to Frederica Furneaux Davis, only daughter of Capt. G. G. Davis, of Geelong.
30 September 1863

Died. On Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, much and dreadfully regretted by all who knew him, John, only and much beloved son of Mr. William Burke. Aged 23 years.

  Died. At Bay Roberts, on the 19th inst., aged two years, John McDonald, son of Mr. Joseph McDonald and grandson of Mr. John McDonald, North Grant, Antigonish, N.S.
07 October 1863

Birth. At Invercargill, New Zealand, on the 29th ult., the wife of Mr. William Taft, late of this town, of a son.

21 October 1863

The celebrated Dennis Ryan, of Red Island notoriety, and some others were arrested and conveyed to St. John's in H.M.S. 'Vesuvius.'

  Died. At Bristol, on the 29th September, deeply regretted by a large circle of friends, William, son of Mr. John Trapnell, of this place. Aged 39 years.
28 October 1863

An Inquest was held on the 20th instant, before J. Peters, Esq., Coroner, and a Jury, on view of the body of Mark Emberly, mate of the brig 'Dolphin,' lying at the wharf of Messrs. Punton & Munn. It appeared that the deceased was last seen on the deck of the brig 'Dolphin,' about 11 o'clock on the night of Friday, the 16th instant, leaning against a plank that was placed across the vessel's deck and resting on the rail, but not reaching to the wharf; and that the deceased unfortunately mistook the plank for the skids which was very near, and walked overboard between the vessel and the wharf. Verdict - found drowned.

  Died. At St. John's, on Sunday 23rd inst., after a long and painful illness, Ann, daughter of the late Mr. Richard Collins.

Died. On Friday, the 6th Inst., Patrick, Eldest son of Edward Fitzgerald, aged 31 years.

  Died. On Monday morning last, Michael Robert, infant son of Capt H. Thomey, aged 4 months.
18 November 1863

Birth. On the 13th inst., the wife of W. H. Ridley, Esq., of a daughter.

  Birth. At St. John's on Saturday, 8th inst., the wife of Robert Grieve, Esq., of a daughter.
  Died. On the 6th October, At Hackensack, New Jersey, after a brief, but severe illness, Sarah, the beloved wife of Mr. E. Winton, aged 37 years.
  Died. At Buffalo, on the 7th October, at the residence of her brother, Mr. Samuel Parsons, Sarah Picakvant, daughter of the late Mr. Jonathan Parsons of this town.
  Died. At St. John's, on Monday, 9th November, the Hon. Patrick Kough, aged 77 years.
  Died. At the same place on the 6th inst., after a painful illness, Mr. Thomas S. Westcott, a native of Teignmouth, England, aged 69 years.
25 November 1863

Married. At Brigus, on Wednesday 18th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Harris. Mr. John Murphy, of Sydney, C.B. (Capt. Of the Associated Press Yacht, Cape Race) to Miss Susan Wills of St. John's.

  Married. At the Wesleyan Parsonage, No. 8, Gottingen-street, Halifax, N.S., by the Rev. J. S. Addy, W. E. Douse, Esq., of Charlotte-town, P.E.I., to Caroline, youngest daughter of the late Mr. P. Macpherson, of Port-de-Grave, Newfoundland.
  Died. On Friday morning last, (suddenly,) Mrs. Dickinson, aged 66 years.
  Died. At St. John's, on Monday the 16th inst., Flora Shannon, relict of the late James Clift, Esq., aged 70 years.
02 December 1863

Married. At Montreal, on the 22nd October last, at St. Luke's Church, by the Rev. Mr. Bond, assisted by the Rev. John Godden, the Rev. Thomas Godden, B.A., son of Mr. Thomas Godden of this town, to Margaret, daughter of A. R. Blackwood, Esq., of the former place.

  Married. At Boulardrie, Cape Breton, N.S., on the 19th November, by the Rev. I. Fraser, Mr. Kenneth W. McKenzie, late of Harbor Grace, to Miss Hughina Ross, youngest sister of W. Ross, Esq., M.P.P. for County Victoria, C.B., also to Roderick Ross, Esq., M.P.P. for Wapuc, New Zealand.
09 December 1863

Married. On the 2nd inst., at St. Paul's Church, by the Rev. Bertram Jones, Josiah, son of Mr. Israel Gosse, Bishop's Cove, to Jane, eldest daughter of Captain Mark Alcock of this place.

  Died. Suddenly, on the 25th ult., of apoplexy, in the 60th year of his age, Mr. Arnold Webber.
  Died. At Bay Roberts, on the 23rd ult., Maria Jemima, youngest daughter of Mr. Elijah Mercer, aged 20 years.
16 December 1863

Married. On Thursday last, at St. Paul's Church, by the Rev. Bertram Jones, Dr. William Fraser, of Bay Roberts, to Theresa, daughter of Captain Samuel Gordon of this place.

23 December 1863

Died. On the 19th November last, at Camdentown, London, Anne Stothart, wife of James Laidlaw Cross, Esq., formerly of St. John's, Newfoundland.

30 December 1863

Married. At New Harbor, Trinity Bay, on Thursday last, by the Rev. W. Dobie, Mr. William Stevenson, son of Captain John Stevenson, to Sarah, daughter of C. Newhook, Esq., J.P., of the above place.

  Died. Yesterday, Joseph Ryan, Esq.
  Died. At Montreal, on the 5th inst., Jomra Breen, wife of M. Ryan, Esq., Advocate, aged 48 years.
